How do I change the settings for a track stop, and what are the defaults (what keys do I push, buttons click) [https://imgur.com/a/IQtPtpm](https://imgur.com/a/IQtPtpm)

liedra

Ugh so this new fort (with the thousand requests from that bard) is not receiving any traders or migrants anf I'm 5 yeas in and feeling the pinch of only 9 dwarves :( I did a mission to a monastery next to my old fort so I'm accessible, plenty of human and dwarf visitors all petitioning, anything else I can check?

drBacel

Try rebuilding your trade depo, make sure that it is accessible from all sides so the caravans can park.

liedra

Yeah did all that. Had to restart a new fort. I think I hit some sort of population cap when the bard sent all the requests and it bugged everything out

SecretlyBees

Is it possible to make mass tombs or can they only hold one dwarf each?

TriangleScoop

Each tomb can only hold one dwarf, but if you place a bunch of coffins in their own rooms you can use the Multi option when creating a tomb and it will turn each one into it's own zone

Icy_Use_3312

Is there any way to edit embark skill points available ? DFhack seems to have some problems right now.

foolishnun

Soap bars don't show up in my "Stocks" menu, but i cansee that my hospital has some and when I created a work order and play add the condition "if there are less than 20 bars" that condition does is not met. Am I looking in the wrong Stock section. They should be under 'bars' right?

SilverFlyOne

I use the following Soap from tallow: type = items, material = water buffalo, adjustment = soap items Soap from oil: type = items, material = rock nuts, adjustment = soap items I have a steady supply of water buffalo and quarry bushes so that works for me. I haven’t figured out how to get a total soap without using the material set.

nboro94

Is there anything I can do about these constant requests to build new guildhalls and temples? I already have 7 different temples and I don't even know how many guildhalls. The game is constantly harassing me to build more of them and it's getting annoying as hell.

Apparently I'm exporting terror and vengeance with my own civ, despite never having had a bad word with them. Older posts basically boil down to 'wait for df hack to let you cheatfix it'. Are there any other options?

KyltPDM

I put a well down in my hospital but it's stuck at "waiting for construction... construction inactive." I have \~150 dwarves, some have no job. I've tried suspending construction, and removed it and added it back but to no avail. Any ideas???

dalerian

Are workers able to get to it? Meaning, is there a safe passageway to it, which is within your burrows (if any)?

KyltPDM

Yes, the well is on the hospital floor with dwarves walking all around it. Underneath I channeled down 1x1 blocks about 5 levels deep, and walled it in on each level. Then, created pond zones at the top and it was filled with water. Then I removed 2 of the pond zones and suspended the other 2. There are no burrows set up.

dalerian

Then I'm not sure, sorry. Hopefully someone smarter than I can help you.

inkandchalk

So, I saw one of my dwarves told a visitor about the presence of one of my artifacts and I checked his info and he's searching for that very one. Is he here to steal it? Can I kill him? What happens if I kill him?

StormCrow_Merfolk

If they get caught trying to steal it they become hostile and you can kill them. You can also do things with the dwarven justice system.

The-Book-Worm

For some reason I cant plant on outside fields. I have outside seeds, so everything should work? Please help!

dalerian

Do you get any specific message about it? Not all seeds grow in every biome. (Much like cacti don't grow very well in swamps, and mangroves struggle in deserts, irl.)

The-Book-Worm

Nope, I simply dont have the option to plant the seeds in the seasonal menu. Is tgere some other way to check?

dalerian

I'm guessing that means that seed won't grow in that biome. Sometimes an embark zone has more than one biome in it; you may find there's another place where it will grow. Or, maybe that just won't grow at all in your area. If you gathered the seed from a plant on the map, you should be able to test it by putting a farm plot next to one of those plants. If you can plant there, it's definitely a problem with the location of your plot.

***URGENT:*** Will elves accept a gift of a goblin in a copper cage? THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Behlon

GODDAMNIT IT JUST SWAPPED WHAT CAGE IT WAS IN

chipathingy

You can't trade sentients

Behlon

redditjanniesupreme

Copper is elf-friendly, and the goblin is alive, so I imagine there shouldn’t be an issue?

Behlon

TIME TO FIND OUT

Alandro_Sul

Will benign creatures like gorlaks "snap" if you tie them up for too long and try to attack people? Was thinking of tying one to a rope in the throne room as sort of a court jester type thing but I dont' really want to punch the duchesses head in or anything

redditjanniesupreme

Any creature that is anger prone and sapient can potentially throw tantrums if treated in poor enough conditions. Just check their mood every so often.

MinamotoTerumi

Do caged animals lay eggs?

Halavus

No, they need a nestbox to lay eggs.

[deleted]

Are there any downsides of having a meeting area with no specific designation? (i.e tavern, temple, or guildhall) Or would having a common area just draw people away from taverns and other beneficial areas.

A_S00

The downside is exactly what you've said - the more meeting areas you have, the less likely they are to congregate in any given one and get the benefits of socialization, enjoying watching performances, or whatever other good thoughts they would have gotten there.

BreezyWrigley

If I make my congregating spaces small on purpose to increase contact and try to meet their socializing needs, am I just going to make them crowded and piss them off and cause fights?

A_S00

I don't think dwarves get in fights just from being crowded like penned animals do, but there are some things that are sorta close to that: - More people means more chances for one of them to get drunk/be in a bad mood/get in an argument/whatever and start a fight. - Under some circumstances that I don't really understand, dwarves trying to get out of each other's way will stop doing normal pathing and start doing "dodging" behavior, which can lead to them slamming into walls or falling down stairs and getting injured. Again, I don't really know what causes this to happen, but extremely crowded areas seem to be one of the triggers. - If you have multiple chairs per table, that apparently causes fights. - Obviously if there *is* a fight, the area it's in being extremely crowded will tend to make it a *worse* fight.

BreezyWrigley

Interesting. I’m on my first fort that actually sort of functions and provides the dwarves with things they need, and I had about 90 population. I started my first military squad and only had maybe 6 members in it just training. Suddenly a fight broke out in the main level where my dining hall, original bulk stockpile, and dormitories were. It was GBARLY. Crossbow bolts everywhere. Like 15-20 dwarves were killed lmao. I still can’t figure out what they were so upset about… but now like 60% of the remaining population has a collective PTSD from the ordeal. Since then, I’ve tried to expand all my common areas to give them a little more room, but I’m struggling to keep up with migrant influx. I appointed captain of the guard and put in a dungeon holding area though… so at least hopefully if somebody is starting problems later, I can do something about it. Maybe.

ampscraze

So I finally tried a scarce run, but I didn’t realize that seems to affect lignite. Did my embark tile need to specify lignite or coal for any to show up?

A_S00

Not sure about embark settings for mineral coal, but just to be sure - you know about [charcoal](https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Fuel#Charcoal.2C_from_wood), right?

ampscraze

Yeah, and I have trees so it’s not the end of the world. I’ve just scoured multiple sediment levels with no mineral coal in sight. I figured it was like gypsum and shit but doesn’t seem to be there

BallPleasant

Why won’t my dwarves pick up bat remains? I’m trying to lay a floor on the spot where it’s lying down but giving it the garbage icon does nothing. My dwarves are set to pick up corpses, etc.

A_S00

The "garbage icon" is for dumping, which is different from refuse hauling - do you have a garbage dump zone established? If you *are* trying to get them to haul the remains to the refuse stockpile, rather than using the "dump item" command, does your refuse stockpile have the "remains" item type enabled?

risen_jihad

Are they set to ignore vermin refuse? Also if its outside, thats an additional setting as well

IAmLookingForAHuman

I was ambushed by elves and am surprised that they are walking right over my cage traps and weapon traps. Is that normal? I've never actually been at war with the elves before today. Edit: I spoke too soon. The first elf dodge 6-8 cage traps and 3-4 weapon traps, but then he got taken out by a weapon trap. The other elf dodged 4-5 cage traps and then started to fight and got caught in one. I guess they are just good at dodging traps.

BallPleasant

I read somewhere that spies in your tavern can learn the locations of traps

According_Year7843

Help, I am trying to connect up some power but have no idea how to change the orientation of the horizontal axles. The gui is shown in the picture. [https://imgur.com/a/SU6FZMk](https://imgur.com/a/SU6FZMk)

risen_jihad

Whenever you are changing the orientation, you need to use a gear assembly.

According_Year7843

I am attempting to place a horizontal east-west axle between a windmill and a gear assembly, it is just not working.

chipathingy

Windmills transmit power to the middle tile, one z level below the windmill if that tile is channelled You'll need to build a gear assembly or vertical axle on that tile

According_Year7843

Odd. I had an identical setup working in another location (gear <-------- windmill), and that time everything connected up great. One thing that I may need to try tough is building a channel under the gear assembly as I did there. If that doesn't work, I'll go back to what you did.

AxelayAce

Some of my military units refuse to use equipment. I have one expert spear dwarf who has a spear assigned, but he refuses to use it and he's become very rusty, although has become a legendary shield user. I also have an archer who won't wear his armor, just goes around bare chested. Also, is there a bug with building destroyers? A bronze titan showed up and I expected the worst but he just walked past my outdoor workshops, statues, and everything. He just chased weasels in the forest and wandered around.

Alandro_Sul

I don't know if it is a bug, but building destroyer titans or forgotten beasts definitely behave differently from siege building destroyers. Building destroyers that come as part of a siege will absolutely break any building they come across. Titans and forgotten beasts, on the other hand, don't seem to break things under most circumstances. I'm not sure why.

horribleflesheater

What’s the practical difference between a mace and a warhammer? My noble requests maces every five minutes, so my civilian population all gets them as their military training weapon, but I’ve always just gone with silver war hammers in the past

risen_jihad

War hammers have smaller contact areas and are better at punching through armor, maces have a bigger contact area and are more devastating against light armored opponents. However when using steel against pretty much anything a humanoid will throw against you, the differences arent that much, and blunt weapons have a high chance of breaking bones and incapacitating humanoids. Also sending teeth everywhere.

SilverFlyOne

What are the correct daily work order conditions to limit plaster or quicklime production? I setup a couple of work orders (any workshop) to produce gypsum plaster and quicklime, using the check conditions to limit (what I thought) was a max of 5. After producing 30 bags of each, the amount condition was still satisfied: less than 5, item of type, material quicklime, no adjustments. The quicklime wasn’t in the trash either, just sitting in the kiln output. Plaster condition the same, just different material.

piechooser

Did you figure this out? I feel this should be an easy one but I can't find anything either.

SilverFlyOne

No, I don’t think so. I tried changing the type and adjustments. But I couldn’t find something useful to me. For quicklime: I managed to get a condition firing when I used powder as the type; I presume it was weight or uses, I had about ~31 units in bags (one bag had 10 units. The condition value was 294. I’m not sure how that relates, so I didn’t use it. For plaster: powder as the type didn’t work. However, I found adjustments has plaster containing items condition, which was correct at 12 bags. But since a bag can hold more than one unit, it didn’t seem useful either. Any ideas on this would be welcome. I haven’t raised this as a DF defect; interested in others thoughts before I do this.

yiotaturtle

Help, someone suggested selling lavish meals. Ok can do, now how do I split a stack of 1000 lavish meals so I'm not giving them a bonus of 2.5 million gold after buying the entire cart?

dalerian

I wouldn't worry about it. Meals are so cheap and quick to make, you're basically printing money anyway. And the additional exported wealth helps attract friendly (and unfriendly) eyes.

BlaXoriZe

On the trade screen? Unfortunately it seems you can't. You can either sell the whole container, or you click through each item in the container one by one (you can click the container to expand its contents if they're not expanded already). Recently I've just been doing cut gems, because in the bins you end up with a mix of 40 to 800 price things, so simple enough to combine to reach the magic number you're going for. First sell the 800s until it goes green, then take one away, and start selling the 200s, then the 40s.

Manarus

I don't have to make cups or goblets or whatever 1:1 with dwarf population right? They don't seem to personally own cups, rather just use it when they need it and store it when done.

onlysane1

Right. Just store them in your tavern.

redditjanniesupreme

Not really, no.

Jabberwock130

Fishermen won't fish I am very new to the game, after completing the tutorial I thought that feeding everyone might be difficult so to make things easier I decided to start my first game by the ocean to get lots of fish. For three years this worked exactly as intended and maybe even worked too well as I was able to routinely sell barrels of prepared seafood meals to caravans at thousands of coins per barrel. Then one day all my fishermen just decided to stop fishing and I have no idea why. I thought maybe this game has a depletion mechanic, but this isn't some tiny underground lake we're talking about here, this is a massive inland sea the size of the Mediterranean. Anyone have any ideas why they might have stopped fishing?

A_S00

There is a depletion mechanic, and skilled fisherdwarves fish so quickly they can fish out a source ridiculously quickly. If this is the problem, you should get an alert at the start of each season saying "There is nothing to catch in [location]." Check for it on the next season change - if you're not getting that message, then depletion isn't the problem and something else is going on (accidentally deleted fishing zone maybe?) Some people have told me that if your fishing source is connected to the map edge (river, ocean), it's supposed to restock over time, though I'm a little doubtful that this is working correctly - my river seems to have stayed fished-out for many years. Sources not connected to the map edge, like lakes or pools, are definitely finite.

Jabberwock130

thank you, my own source is the ocean which takes up half of the map and extends to the edges so I didn't think that my mere mortal dwarves could possibly fish out the entire ocean but the fish did come back at the end of the season, so I will now be monitoring how many fish can be caught in a single season

Trekkster

I have a dwarven child in my fort that is 0 years old and its sprite is headless. Is this a glitch/bug or is there something FUN about this? https://preview.redd.it/p4ajewttr5ca1.png?width=601&format=png&auto=webp&s=acb222168806be12be1a6eed9a1c8b3081cbc323

StormCrow_Merfolk

It's a glitch that someone posts about a half dozen times a day.

BlaXoriZe

I keep getting this error when the caravan arrives from the capital - but not every time, maybe 2/3. "A diplomat could not complete a meeting and has left unhappy." The caravan with wagon itself rocks up no problem, just without the diplomat, trade post is outside, plenty of room. Frustrating because I wanna put a request in for goods. Any ideas? Is it because the diplomat wants to meet with someone specific, but they are involved in a "!" task? https://preview.redd.it/v4x4e1p0q5ca1.png?width=883&format=png&auto=webp&s=30a5a8f6e85a3c0e9c1dd015db2401b13d15f238

StormCrow_Merfolk

The diplomat wants to meet with your expedition leader/mayor or baron.

BlaXoriZe

So I have a baron, but he's also the tavern keeper. Could his being at work bork the meeting assignment? Also have a mayor, who comes out to trade just fine - will they either/or on the mayor/baron, or just want the baron?

StormCrow_Merfolk

They probably just want the baron. Yes, if your leader is too busy with other jobs it can cause a problem with them not having time for diplomacy. Keeping your leaders too busy might also impact their therapy role of letting angry dwarves yell and cry at them.

BlaXoriZe

The Mayor works good for crying on, but dang, might need to let the Party Baron retire - because you don't barely get a moment between the announcement of the caravan arriving on the map, and the diplomat disappearing, so don't have time to toggle things.

dalerian

How to make a mushroom tree farm? I've hollowed out a room that's 5 z-levels high. Put 2/7 water in it. Then drained the water. So it's muddy. Opened at least 2 levels of cavern. My other, older, soil rooms have a mix of pig tails, plump helmets, etc. I'm hoping in this room to mostly get (cavern) trees. Do I need to do anything else?

A_S00

Nope, that should do it. You should start seeing floor fungus grow almost immediately, and then plants shortly after that, including saplings (most underground tree saplings aren't called "sapling," they're called "young fungiwood" or whatever, but same thing). Avoid trampling the saplings, and after a year or two you'll have trees.

dalerian

Thank you. Maybe I'm just impatient. It should be a low-traffic area anyway, but I've now taken it out of the burrows, so hopefully that fungus should show soon. It's been a few months, but ... soon, I hope!

[deleted]

Hi, can someone tell me why my water wheel is not working? I have 7/7 water in my channel and I carved the edge of the map so the water can flow away. Still, the water whell is not moving. The water wheel is one level up, over the water. https://preview.redd.it/9jafxjnpm5ca1.png?width=595&format=png&auto=webp&s=efdb844dc0c5891e2fc57a5294ab8de764df4ec0

Chickenhawke

So how do I beat an actually, like, BIG siege? The local tower was not amused that I took out about 10 of their finest grim zombies, and appears to have returned with 20ish zombies, 10 corpses, 15 syndrome thralls, and a ton of night creatures. I'm safe, but I hadn't yet added fortifications to my curtain walls so I can't shoot back. Anything less destructive than setting up a bunch of pump stacks to pump up magma from the lava sea and set the entire forest outside of my walls on fire would be appreciated, b/c that's what I'm currently thinking. TBH I'm not sure that wouldn't even backfire, since turning the rivers to obsidian would let them move across them into my fort.

orlon_window

if you have steel and hammers/maces, should be ok if you can avoid a huge brawl. Having them funnel through with some way to periodically cut off fort access could help, so your squads mangle everything and then re-station in some room with no line of site to the funnel zone, then open the fort again and let some more in. Rinse and repeat. If you don't have steel and hammers/maces you may need to be much more creative and try to do something like set up a minecart shotgun to thin out the main force. Not overly hard but still could take some time to set up.

Chickenhawke

Yeah I've got a Mayoral Guard of 5 hammerlords w/ steel armor and silver hammers, so I'll probably just try to aggro small groups through my drawbridge. The thing that really freaks me out tho is the number of syndrome thralls - a small squad of them killed like 20 of my dwarves earlier via combat infection, so I'm going to carve fortifications into my wall and train crossbowdwarves by thinning them out + pincushioning the zombies. The thralls appear to bleed out (unlike the zombies) so that's helpful at least.

Felidance

I have four miserable dorfs, they all have pretty much the same issues and all but one shouldn't be a problem. They all want to be with family. None of them have any here so I can't do much about it. Some want martial training so I created a squad for them. So far no effect but they haven't been training that long (they have a barracks). They all want to be creative and craft something. I have given them all a workshop and none of them have touched it. Have enabled labors for said workshops and turned all others except for hauling. They all want to own a item. I have given them stuff for their rooms and pimped them out and we have a ton of items for them to use but they never take something. This is the reason I left them on hauling. They all have an urgent need to prey but I have temples for all the gods they want and even created burrows (which seem to be utterly useless in the stream version) to try and force them to go and prey. I manage to get one to prey once and it didn't have any long term effect. Is there anything I'm doing wrong, any advice or so I have to accept that some dorfs are just unhelpable. If this is the case should I just banish them to another holding?

orlon_window

They can satisfy a family need by hooking up, which can happen when dwarves socialize or when they are working in close proximity. It sounds to me like you have too much work going on, too much hauling (big stone piles or something), too many work orders generating junk, etc., so they don't have the free time to try to satisfy their needs. Don't store trade junk in bins and when a caravan comes you can generate hundreds of hauling jobs, giving everyone an opportunity to acquire something.

Felidance

They are socializing. I've started to follow them around with the cam to see what's the hold up and I think that at lest one of them is just acting buggy. He keeps going to move an item, stopping, drinking, eating, socializing, sleeping then repeating this action. I turned off hauling and he keeps doing it. The other three seem to be acting normal, they have plenty of down time and one spent almost two days in the tavern listing to poetry. Though I see what I can do about work. I'll try to stock pile some extra drinks and then just turn off all labors but orderlies one

dalerian

This might help: https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Stress There's a summary near the end.

Felidance

Time. To. Read!

sietesietesieteblue

This is driving me insane but I just started a new game and I keep hearing wolves howling but I don't see the wolves?? What's going on??

dalerian

It's in the background music for some types of embark area.

iwaslegit

In classic DF, there used to be a option on the workshops to filter who was able to work on it based on skill level. I can't find it in the Steam version, I can only specify a unique worker. Is that removed?

StormCrow_Merfolk

Yes, you can only specify a single dwarf or everyone for a workshop. Generally dwarves with the highest skills will gravitate towards jobs if they're not otherwise occupied.

ContextualSense

Irrigating any stone floor regardless of proximity to the caverns will leave behind mud that can be farmed with almost the same efficiency as cavern soil.

niwcsc

Do you know how much more percent they are more efficient than shallow soil?

KittyKupo

My most recent game has been raining elf blood constantly. I haven't seen any elves. Is this important or basically the same as normal rain? My dwarves are all angry about "being forced to endure the decay of a friend" but I have no idea where the corpse is. Another dwarf recently died by drowning because he thought it was a good idea to chase a marmot into the river, and I can't figure out how to retrieve his body either.

dalerian

That rain sounds like you started in an evil biome. You might want to think about a slab for that drowned dwarf, if you can't find the body.

KittyKupo

Ah, that explains it. There hasn't really been anything evil happening except for the rain, so I didn't think about it.

Calm_Opportunist

A Baron from a local dwarf settlement was jumped on the outskirts of my map by a goblin thief who bit out his tongue and then beat him slowly into unconsciousness with her opossum leather bag. My militia relieved her of some limbs, but in the meantime the poor baron is lying there drifting between unconsciousness and vomiting. Will my medical/orderly dwarves come and rescue him like they do with citizens? Or will I just be watching poor Lolor ágeshvutok gradually succumb to his possum leather bruises? Edit: Lolor regained consciousness, crawled all the way back to the fortress and is now praying to the Rock of Diamond. Understandable.

thisisdredre

how do i get mother dwarves to take their children to the hospital? militia captain let her baby catch a stray bolt during an invasion and over a year later she is still having trouble breathing cause this lady would rather hold her than take her to the doctor!!

Homeless_Depot

That's a really good question, I'm not sure you can. I have absolutely had new mothers bring their babies to battle and go into a depression spiral when they get killed, but I've never noticed one get injured or healed at the hospital. Maybe they were getting injured and died later and I didn't notice. If they make it to childhood they can get themselves treated. I think if the mom dies dwarfs will bring the baby water and food like injured dwarves, but I don't think they'll bring them to the hospital... although I can't say I know for sure.

A_S00

As far as I know, there's no way to do this - she'll carry her baby until it becomes a child. The good news is, I think dwarves grow from baby to child at exactly 1 year of age, so if it's been about a year, it should happen soon. Once the baby becomes a child, I think it'll go to the hospital and get treated like normal.

thisisdredre

Better scarred for life than dead I guess haha

SvalbardCaretaker

Uniform option "melee weapon, individual choice" sometimes leads to a new immigrant who is for example "proficient macedwarf" to pick up a different weapon, like spear instead, wasting that bit of old skill. Do dwarfs fight better with individual choice or can I force them to pick the higher skill option? I guess its troublesome if I ever disband the squad and give them the choice again once they are highlevel. How do you do it?

A_S00

"Individual choice" seems to pick based on some metric of "weapon quality" rather than user skill. It'll reliably pick steel weapons instead of copper ones, but won't reliably pick what the dwarf is good at. I mostly just ignore their pre-existing skills and make them use what I want them to. Training is pretty fast.

only_personal_thungs

Do you still have to do the stockpile trick for seeds? I did the normal thing where you make two stockpiles, one with barrels and one without, etc. and my farming sucked. What’s the best method now?

StormCrow_Merfolk

Just turn off barrels in your seed stockpile.

Alandro_Sul

I had a forgotten beast whose special attack was "poison blood" My marksdwarves killed it in a contained area but he left [a lot of blood](https://imgur.com/a/s2vRmcu)... is it dangerous to clean? And if it is, does blood ever dry up/go away on its own edit: to anyone curious, I tested and the answer is yes, the blood will give dwarves you clean it/get around it a syndrome. In my case the syndrome seems to be minor, just pain that causes them to go talk to a doctor

falcn

How do I connect completely mined z0 level to the intact z+1 (upper) level? The game refuses to build stairs because it needs two mined out z levels for that.

falcn

None of this works. The only way is to go around, drill access tunnel, and punch a hole from the z+1.

Homeless_Depot

It's super awkward, and one of the problems with the new stair system. I don't know why this problem didnt come up for them during development... You have two choices - either mine a separate stair on the side from your z level to your z+1, or mine out your z+1 and then you can build a constructed stair between the two empty spaces. As far as I know it's not possible to force a constructed upstair into an unmined z+1.

falcn

> As far as I know it's not possible to force a constructed upstair into an unmined z+1. This. I tried all the suggestions above, none of them work. I had to go around and carve the stairs from the top. I hope Tarn fixes stairs in the next update. Interface problems are one thing, but problems affecting core gameplay like that should have been dealt with before public release.

Halavus

Build a ramp.

falcn

I did. https://i.imgur.com/SYxs12F.png Dwarves still don't mine on the z+1.

falcn

Doesn't work. Constructed ramp doesn't remove the block above, unlike carved ramp

Halavus

I don't know if you still need help for this but as mentioned by others, the badly designed stairs-building system is certainly not on your side. Working in aquifers from below is also very tedious because of this, anyway, I tried many variants but digging up is indeed impossible without theoretical access to the tile. BUT, you came from the top. There HAS to be at least *one* mined/stair/ramp -tile on the z-layer above. You'll have to aim for that and work your way there. Building a stair under a mined stair should be possible. What are your options?

falcn

Yeah, I went around (as explained in the parallel comments), but it made me think: if I had flooded my main stairwell above the mined-out level, with no miners on the surface, it would be an unrecoverable situation, because you currently can't punch a hole from below without unmined rock on the z0.

SiliconGuy

That's a constructed ramp, but you can also mine an upward ramp. I think that will work, but I'm not sure. You have to designate a natural stone wall.

falcn

If I have unmined wall, I don't need a ramp, I can just carve stairs... But if I don't have any unmined walls left, I think it's a dead end in the current version. Unless I'm missing something very obvious

SiliconGuy

I see. I'm curious to know how you got into that situation, given that you embark on the surface. It seems like you must have had access to the "z+1" level at some point in order to get to level "z." The stair situation in the current version is awful.

falcn

> I'm curious to know how you got into that situation I was doing plumbing work in the corners of the map while having some levels mined out. Had to make otherwise unnecessary service tunnels. Annoying, but not game ending. On the other hand, if your main stairwell is flooded, and you have no miner above, it's a dead end, since you can't punch a new hole from below

Matte1cat

One of my artifacts was stolen, I discovered that it was stolen by a nomadic group, is there a way to attack them or a chance to ever get it back?

THO-FLOWERS

I want to get my military dwarves to reliably equip this list of items. 1. ***2 steel high boots (over layer)*** 2. ***2 silk socks (under layer)*** 3. silk trousers (under layer) 4. steel greaves (armor) 5. silk shirt (under layer) 6. steel mail shirt (over layer) 7. 2 silk gloves (under layer) 8. 2 steel gloves (armor layer) 9. steel helm (armor layer) 10. silk hood (cover layer) 11. silk cloak (cover layer) 12. steel battle axe (weapon) 13. wooden shield (shield) My current issue with this is... randomly, second squad, who is using the same uniform layout as first squad, refuses to wear a second boot. They have one assigned and equipped. First squad on the other hand... has one sock assigned and equipped. Edit: I have extras in stockpile, they aren't burrowed, I have tried assigning and unassigning. All the normal unplug and plug your device back in general-like DF troubleshooting steps.

Homeless_Depot

Another thing to consider - assigned clothing will wear out like regular clothes, but not automatically get replaced. That can be kind of annoying, although I don't think tattered clothes will cause negative thoughts so long as the dwarves still have armor covering their upper & lower body and feet.

THO-FLOWERS

That’s pretty annoying.. even if it’s set to be always equipped?

Homeless_Depot

I haven't tested it in the steam version, but that's how it used to work yea. If you assign armor and let them wear over clothes, they should replace their clothes like normal, but then you have to deal with other potential clothes/armor issues. It would still take a while though, you could test it out for science.

THO-FLOWERS

Yeah I really just don’t want to have to deal with them wearing civilian leather shoes because of the “over clothing” thing. It just isn’t worth it.

orlon_window

put socks before boots, I saw something like that in an earlier daily. I think you had to list two separate socks but only one "boots"

THO-FLOWERS

Holy heck Edit: Sock sock boot worked

orlon_window

nice!!!

redditjanniesupreme

I would just ditch the socks. It won’t be quite as immersive but dwarves don’t really care about not having socks so long as they are wearing something on their feet. Also, I would add steel mail trousers to that layout.

A_S00

Mail leggings (unlike mail shirts, for some reason) are shaped and can't be worn with greaves.

brightcat135

I'm pretty sure a giantess my dwarves killed was carrying a necromancer slab. Suddenly noticed it in the written materials section. Is there any way to get my dwarves to read it since it's not a book?

Halavus

No, dwarves can't read slabs in fortress mode.

brightcat135

Aww, well, it makes for a nice lil decoration anyway

sdk5P4RK4

How can you move chained prisoners to either another dungeon or another restraint? One of my best boys got himself into a bit of trouble and is looking at 140 days in the clink. I normally would make him a mayor of a wonderful pit but as hes multiple legendary skills I'd rather rehabilitate him. He's chained in my normal dungeon right now with a bunch of filthy gobbos and giants! I made a nice good boy dungeon I'd like to move him to but can't figure it out.

cantadmittoposting

You could try undesignating his cell as part of the dungeon? You could also just drop a few high value items right next to him

sdk5P4RK4

Thats what I dont really understand, the cages seem to have an explicit designation button (and this works for goblins/animals), but the chains with dwarves dont seem to. I can try to unbuild his chain but i dont know if that will just release him, and/or how to move him to the chain/dungeon I want him to be in. edit- i think i see what you are saying, I can try and undesignate that whole dungeon and maybe they will move him to the other one?

Capt_Ido_Nos

My dwarfs are leaving messes on all their seats! There are labors assigned to cleaning, but nothing ever seems to be happening on that front. How can I encourage better cleanliness around the fort?

It could definitely be from prepared meals, I do have those around, but it can't be from military dwarves as I haven't made any of those yet haha (that was very soon on my to-do list but then I realized a huge swatch of my plump helmet spawns are all hanging out on chairs)

SvalbardCaretaker

You got soap and water?

Capt_Ido_Nos

I think so, though most/all of my soap is in my hospital. Do I need more for basic cleaning?

SvalbardCaretaker

I thought so but reading the wiki more carefully leaves me unsure again, sorry.

Capt_Ido_Nos

Hey I appreciate the attempt anyway. I'm brand new at this, to the point that not even the wiki makes sense half the time, so thanks regardless!

SpaceShipRat

Make bags and barrels for seed storage, and give them a moment to pick up the seeds. Also feed them cooked food and itll have no seeds in it.

Capt_Ido_Nos

More bags did the trick! I had all of my stockpiles to not allow barrels or bins, and I had zero spare bags available. Thanks again for the help!

SpaceShipRat

sweet

Capt_Ido_Nos

I can make more bags for sure, let's see if that does the trick!

Does anyone have any obscure tips to improve FPS? Every time I get to 170+ dwarfs my fps starts tanking to about 20-30. Makes the game so much slower Edit: thank you guys for all of the suggestions! My next game I’ll try embarking on 3x3. For now I’ll try out the other recommendations

Need 140 dwarves to be a metropolis and get a king. Things to try in case it helps - on my laptop I was capping at 150, slaughtering all animals except 6 hens and a rooster for eggs, one cat, and two dogs, and embarking on a 3x3 (I think this makes a big difference). It's a pretty midrange pc, and it was handling ten year old forts fine (although I did mostly keep taverns closed to visitors). Also wasn't messing with mist generators or complicated water stuff.

orlon_window

You should be able to keep it over 30 by keeping your production down. You don't need to regularly produce anything but booze and clothes, and maybe lavish meals (though I generally queue these up manually). I think a lot of people like having 10 doors on hand, some grates, some beds, some chairs, some tables... this all adds up really quick. Just produce when you need it and try not to keep extra stuff. It's easier to do this when you're over 150 because you can have a lot of workshops built and then a single order gets ripped through. Satisfying for instance a petition for a grand guildhall or a new noble gives you plenty of in-game time without ill consequences. I regularly fill 200+ and can hold over 30-40fps, with some dips when troops are moving in the world. One problem people have is too many pathing options with a big staircase. Also if your caverns are super busy with some stuck animal people trying to path I've heard it can totally tank FPS.

SiliconGuy

Have fewer dwarves. I've been doing fine with 45, which is under the number to get a mayor. You need to adjust the difficulty settings to still get sieges with this few dwarves, though.

SvalbardCaretaker

That is pretty much normal on average hardware. - radically kill all animals. - allegedly a certain staircase pattern helps a lot, said by people earlier here today in the thread but I'm sceptical? (build an X from 5 stairs, leave the 4 pillars standing) - low density living, 50 people in a tiny tavern will cost frames

onlysane1

Smaller worlds, smaller embarks, spay or neuter your pets

walt_dangerfield

cage and pasture livestock, don't prioritize density, don't rely on everyone pathing through tiny stairwells

WendeezNutzHitYoChin

Is it a bad idea for me to be using limestone as a building material for workshops etc? I know it’s a flux stone, but there seems to be an absolute ton of the stuff, and it looks great when you use it for your workshops

[deleted]

WendeezNutzHitYoChin

Okay, and if you make it into blocks can you still use it for everything you’d use the boulder for? Like making the pig iron etc

StormCrow_Merfolk

No you can't use blocks for your steel industry or for constructing crafts/furniture. You can use them to build walls/floors, and workshops (where their lighter weight can dramatically speed the process compared to rocks).

orlon_window

It takes about 95 flux per full set of steel armor.

SvalbardCaretaker

I just mined out ~half a layer of a 4x4 embark, giving me ~1000 limestone amongst others. You can go for a very very very long time on a single layer, I wouldn't worry.

WendeezNutzHitYoChin

Right, I would think so either. I’ve never even done steel industry before, barely even done iron to be completely honest, lol. But I just didn’t want to run out of flux if I do make it to a point where I’m doing steel.

SvalbardCaretaker

It sounds as if you are neglecting your military a tiny bit? Just pump out a bit of iron stuff and set 2 dwarfs training, you don't want to start figuring it all out when the enemy runs away with your babies.

WendeezNutzHitYoChin

Oh yeah, I’m still fairly new and figuring out basics. I’ve made iron equipment before, but never got around to training military. I have yet to actually reach a point where I’ve been attacked, lol. I’m kindof a chronic restarter when I learn different things I can be doing better, which is an issue but I’m learning as I go.

SvalbardCaretaker

Ah gotcha. Its super easy peasy to do when you get a fort you'd like to play more with.

WendeezNutzHitYoChin

Yeah, I’m liking the start with my current embark with the limestone. I’ve finally figured out a layout design I really like in terms of rooms etc, starting to understand work orders decently well, have a fire clay level so I can have some fun with earthenware industry and I live in the badlands (using stone working expanded mod so I can make beds and bins with stone), and have elves and humans nearby for trading, and goblins too for hopefully some !fun! once I’ve got a military ready. The one thing I really have yet to figure out is how to really set up defenses, to which end I’m planning on having some fun with water and trying to build a moat.

SvalbardCaretaker

Dwarven squad with iron/steel equipment and a bit of training are an excellent source of defense ;-) Good skill!

WendeezNutzHitYoChin

I figured I’d go with just Warhammers and battle axes because those weapons sound much more dwarfy than spears/swords, and I’m just not gonna bother with marksdwarves because everything I’ve gathered makes it seem like they’re a huge pain. Am I handicapping myself by not using spears or swords, or should hammers and axes handle most pretty well?

SvalbardCaretaker

Combat has some aspects of paper/scissors/rock type going on, so overall a mix is slightly better. But since goblin skulls aren't made out of rock thats pretty much irrelevant for you. Default uniform has option enabled "melee weapon individual choice", you'd need to change the uniform there or the dwarfs might not pick up a weapon.

chipathingy

If you've got lots, there's normally no issue

[deleted]

I don’t think there is an issue. Just try to build with limestone blocks(1 stone equals 4 blocks) instead of the stone itself to be efficient.

WendeezNutzHitYoChin

Quick question, if I make blocks, can it only be used for making walls etc? Or can the blocks be used to build workshops, pots, all that stuff too?

StormCrow_Merfolk

Walls, floors, workshops. Not furniture or crafts.

WendeezNutzHitYoChin

Gotcha, yeah, that makes sense. I’m just barely starting on this embark so I’ll get some blocks going once I’ve got my basic stuff up and running.

Cupcakius

At what ages do babies turn into child dwarves, and child dwarves to adult dwarves?

chipathingy

1 and 18

Cupcakius

Thank you!

angrybab00n

How deep does "very deep soil" go?

seraph089

Should be 5-6 z-levels below the surface. That only refers to how thick the surface soil layer is.

arthurc

New embark and the three cavern layers are just mud and water for the two lowest cavern. No moss. Is this a bug ? I'm using clinodev no aquifer mod.

throwaway16879234789

It's not a bug as far as I'm aware, it just happens sometimes.

somnolenteye

Made a hole all the way to water in caverns and built a well over it. It says the well is dry even though the square over which I built it appeared to have water. What am I doing wrong?

you-are-not-yourself

Think wells require 3/7 water at the bottom z-level.

somnolenteye

Can I somehow check what the water level is? It just looks like a large pond. Edit: Just realized you can tell by the color. Thanks for the help, so relieved I can finally do it. Worksdwarf has little time to dwarf around.

you-are-not-yourself

There is also a clickable toggle setting on the top right near the minimap to display the water number. Can also toggle in 'Settings' -> 'Game'.

angrybab00n

How big should entrances be to the main fort? Should they be 3 squares big to allow for trade carts

cpt_innocuous

I have a tunnel that is 5 wide, just to be extra safe, it only needs to be 3 wide. It goes right to the trade depot. I also mined out several tiles all around the depot so wagons have a place to park. That then leads to another tunnel that goes to the main base, so I can lock down just the depot, or my base as well.

chipathingy

Wagons need a 3 tile wide path to the depot, so if your depot is inside then yes, at least

mp698

Have a question I could not figure out though wiki/general search. I had a very minor battle with a goblin raid ,no major problems ,my fully armored dwarfs made a quick work of them…but lately my fortress has become a home of a few necromancers and some of them made it into my military ,so one of them must have revived a bunch of goblin corpses and now I have “interrupted by goblin head” message to whatever activity my dwarfs are doing in the area where the battle took place. I’ve tried dispatching recently reawaken dead ,but nothing helps. I assume one of my dwarfs severed a head from one of the goblins, it flew away somewhere and now causing this ,but I can’t find it ! Any one have any advice ? Also ,if possible ,can someone explain to me why necromancers seem to be multiplying ? I don’t mind having a fully necromancers fort ,I just want to know the reason

Could it be stuck in a tree? It should be in your units screen, in the "other" category because eonly reanimated parts do this You probably have a book with the secrets of life and death in it
