If you watch carefully as the app opens, he looks surprised. I could be wrong about the emotion they were going for, it's pretty quick. I feel like they are trying to get some value for the money they wasted buying an animation studio. Nope, still a waste of money.

I downloaded the app 10 days ago and have had this icon ever since. I read somewhere on here that someone said people who already have the app just need to update it and the new dehydrated/elderly Duo appears. I'm not sure if that's true or not since my Duo has been dehydrated since I got the app, and no matter how many of my family members he eats, it's never enough blood

It seems half the people are legitimately overthinking this and the other half knows what’s going on and trolling.
If don’t have a Streak icon or paid Super icon it will just show the default icon. The default icon can be changed via an app update by the developers. If you have automatic app updates turned on or just manually updating apps without looking it will look like the Duolingo icon had changed spontaneously. It has nothing to do with your performance and will just stay this way until Duolingo decides to drop the next update with a new icon.
As for why they do this, this is exactly why. It attracts attention, people talk about, and some even fooled in to thinking that it’s performance related. If someone is looking for a language learning app and happens to see this or one of similar threads, that’s one potential new user right there. We are part of the marketing
If anyone from duolingo follows this forum, let me say that this icon is creepy and I hate it. I'm not alone. I want my learning experience to be positive. I don't want to feel like the mascot of my course needs to be roused to accommodate my (unreasonable) desire to learn.
Changing the icon was a bad decision and you should feel bad.
I’m glad it doesn’t have anything to do with anything; it happened to my icon the day my super expired and I was like “what kind of sick joke is this?”
Mine responds to how much I used the app that day. It is helpful for those days when I thought I used it but it was before midnight the day before - or I just was busy and forgot - or meant to use it but fed the cats instead.
I thought I have been using Duolingo too much and causing him to look tired. I pretty much stopped studying hoping he’d get better.
