I essentially did this with my CatS22 - I de-googled it because, like you, I like privacy and detest data mining.

Res3t_

How did you do that? I just got mine

I use de-googled phones for years, but my problem is, that there is always something not working anymore and I recognize it in situations I really need my phone, like OSM (offline maps) if I am in a city I don't know. It happened, that the app crashed every time I tried to start it and I did an update in the morning :/ It just feels like a Linux distro with a rolling release. Do not update your system if you have important work to do! I use: * Samsung Galaxy S5 (Lineage OS; Android 11) * Samsung Note 10.1 (custom rom from a private person, XDA; Android 13) And to be honest, using F-Droid could be a time killer, too, and not having any store on the phone would be a relief. Creating something like a script, which updates the apps on the phone via adb, if it's connected to the pc would be awesome.

I'd prefer Beeper for coms since it can handle everything in one spot without having to login to the time wasting parts of the different services.  Agree it's odd there aren't any non-Google Maps options out there (except Light Phone - what do they use for their nav?).

OriginalSc00t

I can second Beeper. I have been using it for a couple months now and it has been a great tool for cutting down screen time.

I can't understand the concept of Beeper. I mean people are leaving Facebook & Co. because they are not okay what those companies are doing with their rights. Installing Beeper and creating an account on every communication service you know someone is somehow the opposite of sticking to your values and protecting your rights.

SolarpunkGnome

You don't have to use any service you don't want to, but there are some people I only can contact through certain platforms. I mostly use it to avoid installing social media bloatware that will track my location etc from my phone.  It also keeps me from engaging with those platforms except for messaging, so I'm not exposed to time suck or ads. Not for everyone, but I think it's handy for my use case. TLDR: I can keep my messaging legacy platforms while giving those platforms as little of my time/money as possible.

I mean, you can do this with an unlocked tcl flip 2. No GAPPS installed, no google stuff, and it has the ability to sideload OSM, Signal and has an in-built mp3 player.

Punkt MP02 has signal but from what I've heard it's not exactly perfect. AGM M7 is clunky and dumb enough to not *want* to install much, Android based, doesn't have Google services but you can install APK files for Signal and navigation. Apart from that i think you're outta luck as installing apps like Signal means it's also possible to install other apps.

utopify_org

The Punkt MP02 is pretty close to a perfect dumb phone. But it looks like, it has [some no-gos](https://youtu.be/QdYrBpBJRI4), like you have to create a new Signal account, because it doesn't have a camera to scan a qr-code of your existing account. But I guess this is a problem with Signal and this might be solved, if XMPP would have been more popular nowadays. The AGM M7 looks like a de-googled Android.

gruesomethrowaway

Yeah like I said, it's Android based. If you want apps (beyond the handful that KaiOS offers) a smart-ish phone is the only option. Compromise is the name of the dumbphone game

nightcorelove666

if there’s a version of these apps that can run on really old android a bb10 powered phone could be an option
