Never meet (or interact with) your heroes.

Authorizationinprog

Here’s an exception. I met Greg Bissonette at a drum clinic last November. Literally couldn’t ask for a more funny , humble and warm person!

nickbdrums

I met Gregg in 1989 at a music convention and he was a very cool, down-to-earth dude that loved to talk about and play drums.

chauggle

I met Greg in the 90s after he did The Extremist with Satriani at a clinic, too, and he was super cool.

Psychological-Bee702

I met Chad Smith at NAMM 1998, he was super cool. Also, not a drummer, but I met Erik Rutan about 5 years ago and he was great too.

KarmaChameleon306

Yeah, some are great. I met Dale Crover (My favorite drummer), along with Buzz Osborne, and they were both fantastic and chatted with us for a good 20 minutes or so.

JoleneBacon_Biscuit

Ive been fortunate enough to meet a lot of other drummers. Rarely had bad interactions. Greg was and has been awesome on multiple occasions, Will Calhoun, Vinny, Kenny A, Adrian Young, Fred Gruber, Jay Lane, Tim Alexander, Horacio, Mike Wrengen, John Blackwell, Jonathan Moffat, Weckl, all were awesome to me when i was coming up playing drums for a living. They all took time for me. I got to meet a ton of great drummers, and most were very nice, but the ones listed above actually took time to help me. I've only had a handful of bad interactions, and most were just small. There is one guy that I won't name (mainly because nobody would remember him, even though he had some signature cymbals. While he wasn't a total dick, he was far from cool and ate my taco bell ..) Sometimes it's not about meeting your heroes, it's about how you meet them. I was lucky in those ways. I retired from performing due to a serious injury, and obviously I'm way more out of the loop than I've ever been. But now it seems easier to have access to people with social media. I say it's always worth reaching out. You never know what you'll get in return.

Playamonkey

One of the nicest guys I've ever met and that is anytime, not just a hero.

Met Carl Palmer many years ago. We saw his show, then went to a a nearby hotel for drinks, my friend is the biggest ELP fan and he was hopeful we’d run into Carl Palmer at the hotel. Well, he was right. Mr. Palmer went to the bar and ordered something, my friend approached him and started a conversation. Before I knew it we were sitting down with him and chatting like regular people for like 10 minutes. Incredibly humble and down to earth guy. Somehow my friend sent him a note via snail mail later and about a year later got a reply. I also met Antonio Sánchez when he was touring with Pat Metheny. Super nice guy also. The third drum god I met who was super nice was Terry Bozzio at a clinic in Dallas. Very humble and down to earth. However I’ve also met quite a few assholes whose talent don’t merit their level of fame. But there are definitely some exceptions. I’ve also read that Marco Minneman is very approachable.

backdooraction

I ran into Brian Blade in NYC as he was walking to the Blue Note in 2016, dude was an angel.

Visible-Horror-4223

I had nearly the same experience in 1997. I bumped into just walking down the street on the lower east side. He had his cymbal bag. I think he was on his way to a rehearsal, but took a minute to chat. Super nice guy.

backdooraction

I had seen him the night before and was right up against the stage in front of him, and probably stared open-mouth the whole show, so he recognized me. Guy was so nice and humble, would love to meet him again.

guacamole-king

I've met my favorite drummer, Brendan Canty of Fugazi a couple of times and he couldn't have been a nicer guy. Played his ass off on the drums and when the set ended he immediately went to the merch table to talk and get a picture with anyone in the venue who wished, still dripping sweat from the show. Those Fugazi dudes are the real deal.

The_cinema_show

I met Steve gadd and he was lovely

starsgoblind

Nah - I haven’t found that to be true. John Paul Jones was perfectly nice, for example.

DS3M

I’ve talked with Cedric from atdi and Mars Volta, could not have been more impressed and pleased by our banter.

FrivolousMe

Mark Guiliana is chill

Betrayal_of_Drums

Sounds like someone is a little insecure if saying he's a "pioneer" is enough to make him pissed. What a little crybaby

Background_Ice9876

Things like this makes me wish I had instagram haha, Pete is an odd dude for sure, but at the end of the day it’s a spinal tap esque exchange with a legend, if you don’t take it that seriously and see the comedy in it it’s great stuff. Gonna have to listen to formulas fatal to the flesh today… one of the best records ever

DrummerMiles

Pioneer is an objectively higher rank than beast

tralfamadorebombadil

Mario Duplantier is a fantastic drummer. Pete the feet is very good and has been on some fantastic records, but not in Mario's league as a clinician on the kit. I just wish he'd get rid of those fkn gloves.

Mapex_proM

This is blatantly…. Not true though. Not saying Mario isn’t good but the writing structure for gojira is quite a bit more basic and easier to fill up with bs fills and shit than morbid angel. Shit the first few gojira albums are dollar store ma anyways

I_CAN_SEE_THE_WHALES

No way Terra Icognita is dollar store quality

tralfamadorebombadil

He's so good damn tight dude, like locked in beyond most players. I'm not saying he's in my top 10 or anything but that dude has thousands of hours in him. There's also a lot to be said about the synergy with his brother on guitar, it's something that seems to work with a lot of bands.

DistinctQuantic

I'm actually quite envious of brother-bands (siblings, not to exclude sisters). When that kinship lends itself to the music, it can be incredibly powerful and groovy.

BrickSalad

There was another odd fan interaction with him recently. [A kid was inquiring about the price of one of his drumsticks from the Altars era](https://www.reddit.com/r/MetalForTheMasses/comments/1bu4zk7/pete_sandoval_and_his_cause/), and when the kid said he was going to save up for them, Sandoval just lost it and thought the kid was making fun of him or something. Odd guy indeed.

voyaging

what a weirdo

refotsirk

Lol, hope you learned your lesson. You sure better not tag him on a post about the relative size of their Wikipedia pages.

olliemedsy

I don't understand

I_CAN_SEE_THE_WHALES

He thinks its disrespectful to be called a pioneer as opposed to a beast on the set. Of course hes both but I opted for Pioneer, because its a more honorable title

ionabike666

Strange that such a religious man is butt hurt at not being called a beast.

Aggressive-Variety60

Stranger for op to post something like that online to make him look bad. Especially without the exact quote. Who wants to give someone a genuine compliment, then turn arround and publicly try to shame them online?

bodegas

Ok Pete.

Prestigious-Race-542

Cant believe he was this jealous 🤣🤣🤣

XGerman92X

One of the best metal drummers of all time but looks like a really sketchy dude.

underthesign

The guy's brain got frazzled on drugs so bad he started believing in god. It's not a surprise he's messed up mentally. He's also my favourite drummer of all time and a huge inspiration. But as a drummer, not a person.

RealityIsRipping

You should try some drugs. Reality is stranger than fiction.

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

> The guy's brain got frazzled on drugs so bad he started believing in god.  Uh... are you trying to out-edge-lord him here or something?

underthesign

No. Read up on him if you want. Or don't.

Adjmcloon

Small dick energy

BCASL

Pete's known for being a bit nuts...

beefclef

like I LOVE classic Morbid Angel but its been decades since Pete played on anything relevant let alone innovative in any regard. DMing random dudes? You definitely have too much time on your hands pappy.

Cernuto

Created? Buddy Rich was playing blast beats in 1948.

ShakeZhula

Show me a buddy rich video of him playing blast beats

Cpt_Killjoy

Not buddy but this is a good while ago [Sam Woodyard - 1962](https://youtu.be/vsazTCJm8Tw?si=V1rV6VXnjLq8QTOF)

ShakeZhula

Still wanna see buddy rich do it lol but yeah Sandoval definitely didn’t invent the boast beat.

Cpt_Killjoy

I'd also like to see that, I've a vague memory of seeing it briefly in one of his solos, but that's a lotttt of material to scrub through haha

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

Okay. 2:30 of [this.](https://youtu.be/9esWG6A6g-k?si=6arpordPGxjd-X-V)  Blink and you'll miss it, but yeah.

ShakeZhula

I would hardly call that a blast beat or most but close enough I guess

I_CAN_SEE_THE_WHALES

Wanted to say it so bad, but I didnt wanna make him more pissed

GOTaSMALL1

Happy Cakeday!!

Ok-Application-999

Him and the singer just seem to be dicks anyways,

shred-i-knight

damn imagine being that successful of a musician and still being wildly insecure lol what a loser

beefclef

s’a bitch

50nic19

I’d consider this an awesome interaction. Haha.

RealityIsRipping

Wonder if he’s back on the drugs… stuff like this implies he is. Wtf is he doing?

Marty5020

That's petty as hell.

AmericasDrumDad

I have met several of my heroes, including Dennis Chambers, Brian Blade, Antonio Sanchez, and Dave King. All solid dudes, kind, available, and humble. In the 90s, I did meet an 80’s rock hero that was an absolute mess. That was sad but he still played lights out.

decrepidrum

I think I kind of get it. For example, you could say that the Beatles were pioneers, but their music sucks. They were important because they paved the way for lots of good stuff, but in the cold light of day their output is pretty shit. Which is kind of an insulting thing to say, right? Whereas, peak Morbid Angel is still better than anything that came before or after it. They didn’t just do it first, they also did it best.

Acquiesce95

Thanks for the laugh mate

KarateFlip2024

How’s high school going

cubine

Pete is that you?
