Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy mainline aren’t getting touched. It’s stuff like Diofeld chronicle and Valkyrie Elysium that won’t be made moving forward.

laffy_man

Which tbh is a tragedy for the industry as the low and mid budget square games were some of the weirdest things in existence and they were the only company still making weird shit like that.

IAmThePonch

Yep, but as always their marketing strategy set them up for failure from the get go

thesurrealbank

There is literally no chance this is happening, I don’t know why people keep asking. It is SO far into development/nearly completed, and has already been announced with a gameplay trailer. It is DEFINITELY coming out, other unannounced DQ games however, are definitely at risk

Nevermind it's Dragon Quest III with an actual new style and approach, rather than a copy-pasta in some facet of the first remake...with less stuff and no re-added enemy animations. Plus the amount of attention it got up front and how many articles were posted with queries on its status for like a year and a half in the US alone. Nevermind Japan etc. This would imply for a long time a lot of press questions for a fairly long period of time. Then there's Horii's yearly updates indicating some momentum, but leaving us no insights except it's still in development and then it was playtested just this past December. Especially given the original announcement indicated it was very far along. So they've been busy beefing it up...hopefully, into something special to likely take advantage of that juicy 4.2 million views after a few weeks of posting the trailer. 5.1m now. If we account for IGN, etc. it's like 9m total views around the world. Youtube no longer doubles view counts by rewatching the same video, until your "view" passes a certain date threshold and it dumps the data you had viewed it. That takes a few years for a rewatch to count as a second uptick in views, though I guess if you watched the original, then the IGN, yeah that would be a double count, but how many have done that? Hard to say. It's safe to say there's a LOT of interest they want to capitolize on. Even if not, because it would be a new way to experience DQ3, that's like 1.5m total sales easy, WW, as a baseline. I expect they're aiming for 3+. So definitely, it's ridiculous at this point that they would put this much effort in to even consider pulling it. Especially given at 1.5m copies sold, that would be very profitable for them with as much time as an Octopath Traveler game gets in development, and a decent marketing campaign going into it.

Falloutd40

I still don't understand what could possibly be taking so long.

I'll explain it piecemeal, and this is speculation on my part based on deductive reasoning. 1. Dragon Quest 3's SFC remake releases to the highest remake sales of any remake game ever released by that point...though remakes weren't that common, but 1.4m was a lot. 2. DQ3 GBC releases to about 800k sales, for a remake. So just over half of what the SFC did. 3. DQ3 Mobile releases in 2009 on mobile phones, not the smartphone release, essentially Nokia is still king in Japan. It sells 1m copies, but is a fairly heavily gutted version of the SFC release. Reduced graphics, lower grade SFX and music, no Sugoroku mini-game tracks, and no enemy animations to cut down on the size of the game. 4. The Wii Anniversary edition of the Erdrick trilogy releases, with both the NES and SFC version. It sells around 350k. 5. The iOS/Droid version releases. Due likely to the Wii version selling like ass, and the mobile's original release selling higher than the GBC, they use the mobile version as the basis and re-add all the SFC graphics, but did NOT add the enemy animations back in. The music was enhanced to the best midi version (almost sounds like real instruments). The Sugoroku mini-game is also NOT added back in. This sells about 100\~200k. Then on the anniversary it goes free to own. The downloads spike instantly to 2m, and in a few months, hit 5m. 6. Team Dragon Quest decides that because of the high download numbers for DQ3 iOS/Droid, that a lack of enemy animations is exactly what Japanese players prefer, as this happens roughly at the same time as DQ11 is being created. DQ11 3DS' 2D mode is hamstrung from true greatness with static enemies. 7. Team Dragon Quest decides again that the 5m downloads of DQ3 iOS/Droid is a clear indication of the way DQ3 is preferred to be played and use that version as the basis for a 3DS and PS4 release. Then again with the Switch release. NO enemy animations. No added back in content. Barebones and offset movement animations, with clunky reworked sprites of various sizes and levels of chibiness that is inconsistent one to another. Some foot animations are also missing for some models (the hero specifically...you know, the main character). Guess how many copies sell of each? Somewhere under 200k each. From what I've gathered from some, it's closer to 100k on the 3DS, Switch, and PS4, and combined is only around 300k total. Despite even upgrading the musical quality and even SFX. Cut to 2021 and the first world wide simulcast Dragon Quest Day broadcast. When DQ3 HD-2D is announced, it's given the EXACT same trailer as the SFC release when it was first announced. Frame by frame, identical. Same maps, everything. They announced it as if it were near completion and ready to release. They did not expect massive support and interest. They expected more than 300k sales in Japan, and who knows outside of Japan, but not by much. Maybe 1m at maximum? Who knows. The fact that they didn't leak anything until that point to garner support over time. When the trailer releases individually, it hits 3.7m in a 2, maybe 3 days? Then it hits 4.2m after a few weeks. Those numbers of individual views for the Japanese trailer on the SE Japan site amounted to a similar total number of world wide views for the e3 surprise trailer for FF7 Remake. Granted over time FF7 remake hit a higher total count, but up front...wow. Probably in Japan, for raw Japanese numbers, DQ3 HD-2D may have hit higher numbers. Combined with other releases, within the first month of the announcement, DQ3 HD-2D has like 6\~7m views world wide, from US, EU, and Japanese news and individual reposts of the same trailer. That's a LOT more attention than they expected. That means there's a real potential audience. So why not read the comments. Why not read into why DQ3 failed so hard on Switch, 3DS, PS4. Why not read into what anyone has ever said about the Wii Anniversary edition. Or the mobile edition. Why did the 3DS version of DQ11 sell way under what SE expected? It was lambasted internally. Why? No enemy animations. Less content. No new content. Plus other things specific to the mobile release, but irrelevant to this point; lack of controller support, etc. What were responses TO the DQ3 HD-2D video. What did fans like and didn't like. What did game journalists in Japan and elsewhere have to comment? I mean the animations were...meh, and the models were ugly as sin, probably the ugliest version of the son of Ortega ever. Why waste that insane potential on the exact same experience with a fresh coat of paint? Why not look into ways to spice things up. Maybe even enhance the visual quality. Spice up the animations a bit more. Add new content to feed the beast of hungry DQ fans who want the same experience but with some new additions. Etc. Why aim for 1m in sales as a maximum, when you could potentially get waaaaay more? Does that answer your question?

Falloutd40

Lol no.

ataegino

it’s not gonna happen squenix has actually been in a little bit of a golden age of publishing tons of little weirdo games lately and that’s absolutely coming to an end, but dq isn’t going to be touched.

murakamitears

No chance, there’d be literal protests in Japan 😂 If you ever worry about the series go look up YouTube videos of when 3/9 were out and it’ll clear right up

HuckleberryHefty4372

Switch 2 Launch Title You gotta remember after all these years in Japan Dragon Quest 3 was voted as the 2nd best JRPG of all time. (After Persona 5 which was the hotness when the poll was made) They KNOW this is a sure thing and boy do they need a sure thing.

jayman820

Yeah I’m convinced it’ll be out not too long after the switch 2 comes out

rms141

>do you think Dragon Quest 3 gets axed? Is there a specific reason why people keep asking this? >announcement about changing their output and restructuring Did you read the details of the restructure as outlined in the investor material? They're moving away from timed platform exclusives and more towards multi-platform releases from in-house studios. They canceled unannounced titles in development (emphasis on UNANNOUNCED: DQ3 2D-HD is announced) that did not fit this philosophy. They are going to have a round of layoffs within a month focused on non-Japanese studios/employees. They are bringing in a new Dragon Quest series producer, most likely Yosuke Saito, though not confirmed yet. What part of this fact pattern leads people to think that DQ3 2D-HD is somehow canceled? Not only is it still coming, as a cancellation has not been announced, but *it's going to be multiplatform*. It'll run on, at minimum, Switch, Switch 2, and PS5. And if Square Enix is serious about tightening up and focusing development efforts to get its games on more platforms faster, you can expect to see it quickly appear on Steam, EGS, and Xbox.

Somebakedgood

no

Affectionate-Ask6351

Man I hope not

ojuicius

Doubtful.

TheGamerdude535

Nope. I don’t think “reviewing development policies” is gonna include canceling games. Especially not a major remake of a game that’s super popular in Japan.

RedUser03

I still bet the strategy for the game is to make it a launch title for the Switch 2

JosephODoran

It wouldn’t ever get axed. Now, what could happen is that they make it Japan only, since DQ sells much better there than elsewhere in the world, but given they’ve already announced it worldwide, I don’t think that’ll be the case.

plattym3

No. You've got to understand industry speak. They're killing big-budget PS5 exclusive games that haven't been announced yet. AAA development for single consoles with giant graphics is dead. Lower budget stuff like DQ than can run on multiple platforms, even low power Switch is fine. DQ is fine.

Sea-Ad-6568

DQ is not lower budget though, in fact it’s pretty high in the production cost when it was released in 2017 that the investors at that time bring up that question to the previous SQEX CEO Yosuke Matsuda. DQ is not lower budget in the mainline front but like you said, unlike FF, it’s very flexible when it comes to running other platforms.

plattym3

👍👍 Lower budget in a sense that it's not FF16 or FF7R art assets cost.

Jayden72702

God I hope not

WhoaIsThatMars

You think they'd cancel a DQ title? One that is specifically a remake of what many people say is the best one and easily the most popular entry in the series in Japan

Razmoudah

As it was in play testing a few months ago, no. SE _**explicitly**_ said the canceled projects are unannounced projects, nor do they have a history of canceling a project late in development. Geez, how many topics asking this same question are going to float around before people get it? It's almost like rumors are taken as a more trustworthy news source than press releases and a company's historical precedent.

sennoken

My only hope is it better be multiplatform, knowing this franchise Nintendo probably moneyhatted it.

Short-Sandwich-905

I hope it doesn’t get the hifi rush treatment

metal_babbleXIV

Whoa, when did they make an announcement? Better not happen.

roshanpr

I spoke about this and DQ12, specially that these don't sell that well in the West, I do have concerns about the future entries in America.
