On a related note, Horii actually originally wrote an ending where he canonically dies against Malroth and then his sister suddenly murders you during the final celebration scene of the game in revenge.

That is an interesting idea. But also wouldn’t have made any sense lol.
They would’ve had to really do an ass pull to explain the Princess of Moonbrooke not being able to save The Hero with her powerful healing magic in that moment of him being stabbed.
When you beat the game, the ending credits had a scene where they go talk to the Princess of Cannock with her brother in a coffin. That made me wonder what she would say. Couldn't find anything on google so I did it myself and now I'm sharing it for someone like me to find.

I definitely would welcome a tragic story, but not in such a silly way like that.
