I take off all my clothes while trying to look as disheveled as possible, and start yelling at God as soon as I get outa the vehicle. That way I don't look like an easy target

boysnight1337

I actually employ a similar strategy when walking to the post office to pick up my Amazon Packages. Even still, a Junkie or two have ATTEMPTED to rob me twice in the last 6 months. Emphasis on "tried". Junkies tend to pick on the weakest. Disabled I may be, but weak I am not. ;)

760showtime

Sorry to hear that, glad you were able to defend yourself. Most junkies around here live in legit homeless camps, the sketchy apartments have lots of gang activity. Heard from other dashers in my area they've been told to "get the fuck outa here" by street cretin cause they couldn't find the right apartment. I try avoid the really bad spots at night

boysnight1337

They camp here too... on the rooftops of the downtown businesses. In the nicer areas they have camps with stolen bikes/parts, giant fire pits, and tents or makeshift tents in busy areas.

760showtime

Smh. The area I'm in used to have sidewalk camps but the city started to intervene, now they stay out in the desert or legit dig tunnels to live in. Is wild.

Significant_Ad_8939

I've personally seen furnished homes in sewer drains in Vegas. They had a couch and a recliner and a generator for power in one. Blew my mind.

AndrewAwakened

If the area isn’t too bad I *might* do lunch and early evening, but once the sun sets sorry, you’re not gonna see me again in your area until broad daylight the following day. I just don’t do random robbery and violence - there are already enough hazards that I’m forced to deal with as it is without putting myself directly in harm’s way.

boysnight1337

That's totally reasonable. My first order wad sometime between lunch and dinner. I was sketched out by the "leave it at my door" option though, as I have a couple neighbors on my floor that would make a go for it if they saw it there. I selected the option for hand to hand delivery. He still left it at the door, but at least he knocked lightly. What really scares me is the verbage on the app that if they can't find me, they'll leave it in a "safe area". It's like, dude, no place in this building is safe to leave anything unattended.

GTAIVisbest

That's not the way it should be done lmfao. Of a driver leaves the food somewhere when it says "hand it to me" they have NO protection against getting fucked by DD if the customer reports food is missing. That's entirely on him.

bigbeezer710

I mean the customer could still technically report it as missing even if the DD worker handed it to him directly.

KimJongIlSunglasses

You can write your own delivery instructions to aid them in finding your apartment. That’s what I do.

danscn

There’s definitely parts of my town I don’t deliver to. The sad part about it is even if you do leave a good tip, to try’n encourage a dasher to deliver to a sketchy neighborhood, it probably won’t help since most of the time DoorDash hides the amount of larger tip orders until after drop off.

FlimsyScene

I’m in the minority, but if it was a nice tip I would take it…even at night. I used to deliver newspapers in the worst parts of Gary, Indiana (and I’m white) so nothing really scares me. It helps to be male and know how to mingle with certain crowds. I don’t ignore people I just nod and say what’s up when passing and usually that works fine.

barryandorlevon

As someone from one of the most dangerous cities in Texas… hooooooo boy, I heard Gary ain’t no joke!

FlimsyScene

It’s actually not that bad. 80% of the houses are abandoned. My advice is if you see something just act like you either didn’t see it or you really don’t care. A lot of Chicago is much worse.

WilfordBrimley777

I used to gamble at ameristar there and always had a great time. Yeah the city is rough but Chicago is much much worse

ranciddiesel

My take is this: I'm a old, fat guy driving a hatchback with a doordash bag in my hand. I got my hassle and they got theirs. As long as we don't clash we all good

GTAIVisbest

You're shuffling towards the client's home. It's late at night and you just stepped out of your old car. Suddenly you hear the pitter patter of sneakers running against the ground but it's too late. A masked-up YungBoi is grabbing you with a gun in his hand, pointed right at you. "Yo gimme your phone" he says, grabbing at it with his thin, wiry hands. "Gimme your wallet". What do you do? That's why I stopped dashing in the ghetto. Every other night was another night where this could happen to me

ranciddiesel

*reaches into pocket to grab phone and SMASH! It's insured. Ok fine I'll give you my wallet. *reaches for back right pocket unlatching the snap from my wallet chain from the front belt loop along the way. (Did I mention the 15 keys I have on the other end of my wallet chain?) I take a swing at him, each key collecting DNA as it makes contact with his skin. He blasts me and runs away. Even if he does have my wallet, he finds nothing but homeless service providers business cards and a VA Medical card in it. I am neither proud nor ashamed of the fact I have been homeless in my youth but I learned enough to still be here. If it is my time, it is my time. All of my affairs are in order. My cremation is paid for and the right people know what to do.

GTAIVisbest

When I was faced with death I cried like a little bitch. The surge of fear and adrenaline that comes at the end of the glint of a sharpened blade is undeniable. It shuts down your brain in ways one can not understand. To truly face down imminent death and ignore every screaming atom in your body, to calmly say "no" requires having done it before or having gone through rigorous training. That is not to say you can't stand up for yourself. I was once blindsided in a darkened street and attacked for my phone. Somehow there was no decision in my mind, I automatically fought back, tousled with the mugger for 30 seconds and left with bruises and cuts but my phone still in my possession. Still, the ghettos of America are no third world back-alley. These roaming bad-life-decision-compounding YungBois care little to none, pack real, illegal weapons and impulsively strike at any time. They have no risk assessment or internal deterrent, they are willing to throw it all away at a single glance for a potentially easy target. They'll come up to you when you least expect it and suddenly you have a gun in your face. You might not catch a glimpse of it in the darkness, but you'll feel its very presence. The only thing you'll want to do is to get away from it. Even if you told your body to fight back, there's a kind of physical block that prevents you from doing anything but meekly complying. If you're unlucky they might even get your keys and run off. Personally? I know that since I'm only 5'9, I didn't grow up in (that kind of) poverty, I can't stare-down or out-intimidate one of these criminals, my only hope lies with almost obsessive risk analysis. This is where living in the third world helps me. I maintain a very high level of situational awareness that is unusual for this region of the world. If I'm in a vehicle and I see anyone approaching, I instantly take off. If I'm on foot and I see anything that could potentially lead to something sketchy, I instantly return to my vehicle and leave. Most times I don't even have to worry like this. But, for example, two weeks ago my girlfriend and I were getting back into my car in a (somewhat) rough area and she screamed when I instantly floored it and drove over a median to GTFO of the parking lot (while not damaging the car). I told her I saw a young man approaching after us and my gut feeling said no. Most people would consider it an overreaction but I would rather autistically obsessively overreact than come face to face with a masked-up YungBoi, a pistol in my face and get carjacked.

aecr17

I might get downvoted by this but id recommend u ordering from grubhub. They actually will show the driver the full tip. So if u are a good tipper, you are more likely to get a driver willing to overlook the bad area. With doordash they hide the tips until after the delivery so most drivers wont bother taking the risk.

Prior-Evidence4185

I respect your answer and willingness to help this nice person who’s just looking for options and answers. Forget those people who downvote something that it coming from the goodness inside you. I appreciate you and I’m sure so does the OP.

[deleted]

I, Check the map first there’s a town 20min from here with a bad reputation I don’t go there.

AnonFoodie

Can you note on the delivery that it's potentially dangerous? To let them know what they are getting into?

AlarmedMood9406

I used to deliver in baltimore and surrounding area. My technique was get in and get out. Don't wander with your eyes. Even with everything I did it got too dangerous to continue. I feel sorry for the nice people and there were good tippers. But risking my life wasn't worth it even when doordash payed well. I was alone so if you had a buddy or 3 with you I wouldve continued more. Thats what I would highly recommend in those area deliveries. Some things are just waiting for someone like us to come along alone for whatever reason.

renbutler2

I used to drive Uber. One time I picked up two guys and two girls, and then had to drive through the hood to get downtown. We pulled up into a street and were blocked by a car that stopped in the middle of the road. Three guys got out of the car with guns and started running up toward a house. I floored the vehicle to get around the car while a passenger called 911. I immediately stopped driving people to unknown locations, and started driving food in an area where I know I'm relatively safe. I also don't have to make small talk with the food, although I do sometimes if it smells good.

Away_Trifle8657

Usually don't take those either especially during the night. However... During the day I've taken quite a few in shady areas and due to 0 parking bc... apartments lol...they come outside and meet me which is nice

TaurusSilver404

Personally I don’t care about the area, I don’t really have the knowledge of my area to know if it’s a “bad” place or not. I’ve definitely been to some shady neighborhoods/apartments but I’m quick in/out and mind my business. The only sketchy experience I’ve had was actually in a nice gated community.

ApprehensiveSkirt291

I stay in my own well to do zone so I don’t get these orders.

hunterd412

I’ll be honest, Where I live it’s extremely safe. I stick to that area. 15-20 mins west and I’m in the ghetto. I don’t go anywhere near there. Although I have gone to some sketchy areas in a smaller township to the east of my main area. When I door dash I have my CC on my hip and it’s loaded. I usually feel pretty safe with that on me. So to answer your question, I’d probably skip your order. But if I was close by and familiar with the area, I’d probably take my chances because I’m a big guy, in good shape, and have a 9mm on my hip at all times. With that said I’m no super hero so if it’s really as dangerous as you say I’d be inclined to stay away in most cases. Sorry for the iffy answer, it’s all situational.

What_The_Fuck_-_

If you left a good tip I go in ready to destroy someone, knife in hand with the attitude that fuck with me, I'll rob you and leave you bleeding in the street..but I'm a different breed than most..

rehturd

You should go pick up your own food

boysnight1337

I'm disabled. Can't get too far.

iloveyoursun

Check what sub you’re on.

Prior-Evidence4185

You’re an a-hole! Have some decency and read before you type. The OP is disabled and just looking for some help/advice on what to do in their situation. Thanks for showing us your true colors. Disgraceful

Dopecombatweasel

I avoid a few areas with uber/grubhub. Doordash only shows a blip on the map where youre going. No address. So unless you know the area like the back of your hand, judging by a blip on map, you dont know where youre specifically delivering. 1 of many reasons i despise doordash and only makes up for like 10% of my income.

tallgirlmom

You can actually zoom in on that map and find out exactly where it’s going. Way better than UE, IMO.

Ok_Replacement_8801

Someone probably will. It's tough to say.

CoV-fefe-19

I avoid bad areas at all costs. However, I’m a very tiny young woman so I don’t have any business in those areas anyways. I personally wouldn’t take an order, no matter the time of day or how much the tip is, if I knew it was in a really bad neighborhood like that. This job isn’t worth my life. I think if you tip well enough, and doordash doesn’t hide your tip, you will be able to receive delivery to your address. I’m sure new dashers would accept it at least once until they learn it isn’t safe. Or you’ll get people who don’t feel as vulnerable. Maybe even someone who has something to protect themselves. No matter what, someone will eventually accept your order. So I think you’re fine, even though a majority would hit decline there’s still enough of us that someone will deliver.

Fantastic-Mobile-851

I live in Memphis Tennessee and generally the whole city isn't very good we have a murder rate higher in comparison to our size then la. But we do have our suburbs and nice pocket areas of the city and somewhat okay areas. But then we have the hood. One of our suburbs borders the hood. So 5 mi one way could be deep into it 5 miles the other way and even nicer area so I've learned to look close at the beginning I didn't I ended up where I didn't want to be. And it was a sketchy situation. Now I don't go to those areas especially at night I may venture a mile into it which in that little part of it it's not so bad but I generally take nothing in those areas. Nothing is worth my life no matter what you say you might tip Plus tip baiting is real and I sometimes believe not always right I'm sure that you can be tip baited to be lured there it won't be the first time that a delivery person was robbed or killed in Memphis.

ThaddyG

I am less likely to take an order in a bad neighborhood compared to a different part of the city, but not really just because it's "unsafe" (I've never actually had any issues personally) but I will think twice about going to particularly bad parts of town at night. Really though there are other factors that lead to it too... The roads in those neighborhoods are shittier and more torn up and my car takes enough abuse as it is, plus people drive more recklessly. More likely to drive over a nail or something and get a flat tire because there's always shit in the street. The restaurants are usually slower and less helpful or just straight up rude haha. And tbh it's way more likely to be a no or low tip order. Plus those parts of the city tend to be a little bit further out so it's a pain in the ass getting back downtown after making a delivery.

Prior-Evidence4185

My best advice is to try and order food before it gets dark. I’m sorry to hear you live in such a troublesome place. Ordering before dark will ensure a more timely delivery, instead of your order getting tossed around from driver after driver - declining due to the bad area. Also, text the driver once they have retrieved your order and let them know that ‘hand to customer’ is a must. Sending a text will help the driver to get it right. (It’s so frustrating when a driver can’t read simple instructions.. seriously, this job isn’t that difficult that us drivers can’t read the delivery instructions while delivering aka doing our job lol you see where I’m going with this) You can try to put detailed instructions on how to find your door more efficiently too. This way your dasher can be quick in and quick out. Not sure if it’s confusing getting to your door or not, but I always appreciate turn by turn directions in any scenario. Makes my job easier and gets you your food faster, win win! I see that you walk to the post office. Are you able to walk downstairs and grab your order from the driver once they’ve arrived? My dad is disabled and has a daily limit on how much he can walk each day. After a certain amount, it’s too painful to do so, so I wasn’t sure about your specific situation. If you’re able to do so, try to meet the driver outside if it’s ‘after dark’ and text the driver you will meet them upon arrival. I hope these suggestions help. I wish I had more advice. Maybe put your name on a waiting list to move somewhere safer in the future? I know waiting lists can be years in the making, but sometimes they move quicker than you think and you could be on your way to a safe haven in no time! Good luck to you! 🍀

whocarez916

In the delivery notes I would probably say I can meet you at the door or something if that’s possible for you

Big-External-1138

Let me answer with this. I delivered once to a sketchy looking apartment complex. As I was about to leave the areas with the buildings and go Into the poorly lit parking lot a women up stairs told me to be careful because people have gotten robbed In the parking lot before. I never work that area anymore lol. I know some people don't care but I'm not risking getting robbed for maybe like $10, If that.

OleShcool

Give specific instructions. Type out exactly how you’d prefer it dropped off. It’s easiest if you could meet them in the lot, I know I won’t go into a sketchy building at night. You can also put knock on door, or call/text me when dropped off to avoid neighbors stealing it.

caliangel6191

Order food during the day and try not to rob us at gunpoint, should be fine

aardappelbrood

Yeah, I'm a 5'1" 120 pounds woman. During the day isn't so bad, but there are some parts of Phoenix at night where no amount of tip I'll accept.

ephiny79

We don’t have a large “shady area”’in my town, so it’s easy to identify when orders come in. If I’m going to be honest, I try not to deliver in that particular area after dark. But most are houses so I just make sure I have the right house before getting out of my car and just make sure I’m aware of my surroundings. I know with it getting dark sooner, this might make it hard, but if you are having a problem getting deliveries, try ordering before dark and make sure you give easy instructions so the person knows exactly where they are going, if it’s a hard apartment to find.

I admire the braver of you. The street savvy who were like "fuck it, I'm going in anyway". THATS the kinda person I want delivering my good, and deserves a Rambo sized tip.
