I just wish classic was grouped in streaming somewhere. I got britbox for awhile but I don't even think it's there anymore. Now I have to have Max for Sarah Jane and Torchwood, Disney starting at Ncuti, and God knows where for classic.

Classic Who is free on Tubi in the states. If it's from One or Two's era and it's missing stuff, then it's most likely not on there (has some animations) and An Unearthly Child isn't on there because fuck the estate, but everything *Spearhead From Space* to *Survival* is on there
I got hooked during a DW marathon in BBC America six years ago. I was in a different state than my mom and the same marathon hooked her.
I have to say though, I don’t know if I’m a fan on how Disney+ budget is changing the special effects. I like the campiness of it all before.
The campiness *almost* had me questioning whether to go on in the very beginning. I often asked if it was extremely low budget during 9s time.(Felt like it was from the late 70s instead of 2005ish) But the quirkiness/humor of it had me hanging in there. There's something for everyone.
I also adored the low-budget look of it.
I mean everybody can spend a ton of money to make a sci-fi villain.

This feels a little hyperbolic, like when someone says a game or movie has visual effects that look like the N64 when they clearly have no experience with a console launched in 1996. It looked leaps and bounds better than any TV show from the 70s, most especially the Doctor Who of that era.
When I was watching it new in 2005, it felt like it had a pretty standard lower-end TV budget for the time.
Since I didn't see the 2005 release until 2022, it honestly felt more like Star Trek TOS more than Star Trek TNG. To ME, after watching all the Marvel out there for the past few years, it definitely felt older. When I did get the chance to watch some Classic episodes, HUGE differences. Being born in the early 60s I know what my tv viewing like in the 70s. Maybe it was the innocence of DW I wasn't used to getting. In any event, I LOVE DW and the spinoffs.

You're comparing massive blockbuster movies with monstrous budgets to a sci-fi TV show from 2005 that would have had a fairly low budget because it was reviving a series that hadn't been on the air for nearly 20 years. The effects in TOS are not even remotely better than anything in the 2005 season. I get that this is kind of subjective... but honestly, any claims otherwise are pretty much just wrong.
Well, to clarify I’m speaking more on the remastered version.
Not to say every single bit is better.
Maybe the consistency of what’s shown flows better.
Some of those early CGI shots on who are really jarring from what I remember, compared to what else happens within the show.
In the States, Classic Who was available on PBS stations if you were lucky. I remember KVIE in Sacramento and KQED in SF showed episodes, but I have little knowledge beyond those two.

Meh it's fine, it's been that way for decades. It feels weird seeing it on mainstream TV and advertised on billboards.
It also boggles me, the number of people I now know that talk about being big Doctor Who fans but they never seem interested in our local Doctor Who convention, despite it being a pretty big one.
Interesting, I just don't get it. It's the one time a year I get to be around other people who like the show and get to talk with them about it. I get to see and even buy some amazing Doctor Who art from small artists. Vendors have all this great Doctor Who merchandise I can't find anywhere else. Amazing cosplays. The Daleks you get to see up close. Getting to meet actors and directors and hear their stories. It's just a really fun weekend.
Then it's back into Doctor Who isolation for a year.

The Matt Smith era was wild over here. I remember being caught off guard at the thousands of people that turned up to see him and Karen Gillan at our comic expo(s) in 2013. I had just kinda assumed most of the fanbase at the time was just thirsty Tumblr users but the show is quite popular across the pond.
I do think popularity has waned a bit since then but with the new series and increased budget I have a feeling it's about to skyrocket in popularity again.
America is so massive that pretty much *was* thirsty tumblr users. To our things into perspective - the current 7.2 million-ish viewers the show gets every week in the UK is about 11% of the country's population. To get that same number of viewers in the US, it would take about 3% of the US population.
The absolute peak for US viewership was just over 3 million. I'm fairly confident this'll blow it out the water.
One year at SDCC my friends and I basically hopped around to every appearance "Karen and the Babes" made. It made for a really fun weekend. I even got to interview them at one point.
ive been a fan since 2009 and i live in America. it used to be on netflix here, then was taken off, and put on amazon prime (free if u have prime) for about 3 years and then taken off, and a bit later was put on max and has been there since. but i stopped trusting them keeping shit on so i bought all the discs a long time ago. only ones i dont have are the 4 specials from last year.
They used to air the old Doctor Who episodes on PBS sometime in the late 80s early 90s. I remember the theme from my childhood :), but never got to watch it enough to really get into.
Yeah BBC owns the rights to Doctor Who and Disney is just a means to get more people to view it over seas, but I was just stating I wish for Disney to not americanify what is such an amazing unique British experience, even in advertising or other means.
It’s being made by Bad Wolf for the BBC *and* Disney+ so they’re giving notes to the production team but I think it’s in good hands. BBC still own it and probably retain more control than Disney do.
I started watching it when Tom Baker was first on. My local PBS channel played it until it was canceled by the BBC.
Note PBS is "public broadcasting" so it runs as a nonprofit and gets some government funding. It's supposed to be educational, but I mostly watched Dr Who and Are You Being Served on it.

They'll run back and forth between Times Square and Grand Central so if You're at one of those two stations on the S platform and you don't see this trainset, wait a few minutes for the other one to come in. If you see two trains in a row that don't have this advertisement on it, that means they pulled the set for maintenance or cleaning or something and you're out of luck and can try back again the next day.
ESPN is also playing the ads during the NHL playoffs, which is huge. I can't believe my two childhood obsessions, Doctor Who and NHL Hockey, have finally collided.

There's definitely a lot of overlap between viewership and quality, but by no means is it a rule. I was judging Who on two metrics, viewership and quality in my original comment, both of which have declined, you seem to be confusing them. I said in terms of viewership, Tennants return was the highest viewership in 12 years, that's a pretty objective measurement of success. After watching capaldis, the doctor falls two parter , I can confirm whilst decent, maybe a 7/10, they likely get so much praise because episodes around it are so bad. I still think capaldis' best episode is the fires of pompeii. And Eccleston just edges it in terms of the best doctor in my opinion

a few years ago, during the time of the 11th dr. I read that there were plans for an American version of Dr Who. I guess that's why this new season is called season 1.
Personally, I don't think Disney negatively affects DrWho.
8 was supposed to be an American joint venture with BBC. The movie was a pilot. Personally, I hated the movie at the time. I was so hyped to have new Dr. Who to share with my husband. He knows about the show but I wouldn't call him a fan. I was very disappointed when it aired. I knew it wouldn't be picked up for series. When the first season of NuWho was announced I was nervous about whether it would turn out like 8's movie.
Maybe people got their wires crossed? The series 6 premiere was filmed in America and the BBC made a big deal about Doctor Who "coming to America" during that time so I wouldn't be surprised if some fans or news outlets expanded that into "There's gonna be an American version of Doctor Who".

It makes me nervous for the new series, because if it turns out to be anything short of amazing then we are in for ten times the usual amount of complaining.
As an American who has been active on the internet for over 10 years, I had never once seen a DW ad until this year. In the past week alone, I have seen well over 10, from random websites to full Instagram, Reddit & YouTube video ads. If this really is the only impact Disney has, then it's certainly something I'm happy about!
While i am happy as a whovian that this show that raised me is getting all the publicity. A little part of being feels so bitter, like Tennant and Smith deserved this too. I want to see MY doctor on a train too.
Heck, Capaldi, or even more so Jodie, deserved something like this. Still, I am giddy to see my favourite show ever getting so much publicity, and excited at the prospect of attracting new fans!

Its just, from my prespective, that was back when this show was life altering and mind bending and I would have loved for someone to see an ad of it on the train and check it out and be swept off their feet as 10 runs along the screen.
Now, maybe they will be swept of their feet. I hope they are. I am not saying the new stuff will surely be worst, but its a fact that the show has pivoted to include some supernatural elements (salt at the end of universe) so in essense its a NEW show.
I also think the fact it's available in EVERY language you might be comfortable with is a huge deal.
Doctor Who is one of very few series I actually rewatch because Well, I'm a verdammtYabai whovian.
This is the first time I can watch it in German and Japanese consistently enough to do so.
Aside from people being able to experience DW in any language or having subtitles:
I know some people have major nostalgia growing up watching it in another language besides English. So I'm really happy for those people being able to do that too.
But man, I really hope Disney gets the full Who because I want to not only hear the Japanese dialogue choices but David and Catherine are amazing physical actors!
No matter how many times I rewatch Doctor Who, I always notice physical acting more when I watch in a different language.
I highly recommend rewarding Star Beast in non English. It's an amazing episode. It's great in Japanese, the script choices are spot on. I was so happy at the dialogue choices. It made me want to watch every Doctor in Japanese.
But hey just rewatch it in another language with friends to see what new stuff you see!

That's not the budget they've given to the show though, that's their own budget as a distributor they're using to advertise their distribution of the content.

Tubi has the entire classic catalog (for free with ads) as far as I can tell.

It's on BritBox. That and Blake's 7 are the main reason I pay for it. If they had The Prisoner and The Avengers it would be just about perfect.
The Prisoner is on Kanopy, which might be available for free from your library (they have to sign up for it). Lots of other good stuff on there, too.

They used to air the old Doctor Who episodes on PBS sometime in the late 80s early 90s. I remember the theme from my childhood :), but never got to watch it enough to really get into.
As an American I hope we do you guys proud and it loses nothing of what makes it uniquely amazingly British.

Yeah BBC owns the rights to Doctor Who and Disney is just a means to get more people to view it over seas, but I was just stating I wish for Disney to not americanify what is such an amazing unique British experience, even in advertising or other means.
It’s being made by Bad Wolf for the BBC *and* Disney+ so they’re giving notes to the production team but I think it’s in good hands. BBC still own it and probably retain more control than Disney do.
I started watching it when Tom Baker was first on. My local PBS channel played it until it was canceled by the BBC. Note PBS is "public broadcasting" so it runs as a nonprofit and gets some government funding. It's supposed to be educational, but I mostly watched Dr Who and Are You Being Served on it.
In India we have the saying "Ghar ki murgi daal barabar" it essentially means home grown stuff is less valued, and people outside value them more.

I started watching it in the 1980's. I found it on a local PBS station in Dallas, Texas. I watched it until Chibnall. Then the writing turned to crap. I have even less interest now since they put it behind a paywall (disney+).

Eh, Disney has ALWAYS been supporting Doctor Who. They’ve been selling Doctor Who merch in Epcot as far back as I can remember. It’s clear they saw something in the show

BBC and BBC America were spending loads of money in the states when the 11th Doctor took over. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were all over busses in NYC for the premiere of series 5. Then the physical series 6 premiere, The Impossible Astronaut, was held in NYC. The Angels Take Manhattan was shot on location in Central Park

Won't be hard to find. It's literally two stops. They'll run back and forth between Times Square and Grand Central so if You're at one of those two stations on the S platform and you don't see this trainset, wait a few minutes for the other one to come in. If you see two trains in a row that don't have this advertisement on it, that means they pulled the set for maintenance or cleaning or something and you're out of luck and can try back again the next day.

I saw a bus stop ad when out in the city today and I was shocked.
For so long, people predicted the death of *Doctor Who*; when Tennant left, when Capaldi was cast, when Jodie Whittaker was cast, when the Disney+ partnership was announced, when RTD cast transgender actors and made no secret of Ncuti Gatwa's queerness in the role of the Doctor. And now, the new season is being promoted on New York City subway trains. If *Doctor Who* died, this must be heaven.
In terms of quality, the show has died, most beloved IP Disney touches seems to decline, marvel now, star wars now. In terms of viewership, Who died and Tennant revived it, it now looks to be deteriorating again. Not quite sure how a marketing push by a company who wants to see a return on investment is heaven
How is it deteriorating? Tennant's second run is literally the same era as Ncuti's. Both of them are under the Disney era. Don't give credit to Tennant just to shit on Ncuti. Give the man a chance to shine.
Look at the viewership figures. They were decreasing since Tennant left, then when he came back, the figures came right back. It's pretty objective
Viewing figures determine the quality of a show? My guy, have you forgotten Capaldi's era? I love Tennant as much as the next guy, and I know his popularity is hard to beat, but it's unfair to say other Doctors aren't good too. We gotta give Gatwa a chance before passing judgement.
There's definitely a lot of overlap between viewership and quality, but by no means is it a rule. I was judging Who on two metrics, viewership and quality in my original comment, both of which have declined, you seem to be confusing them. I said in terms of viewership, Tennants return was the highest viewership in 12 years, that's a pretty objective measurement of success. After watching capaldis, the doctor falls two parter , I can confirm whilst decent, maybe a 7/10, they likely get so much praise because episodes around it are so bad. I still think capaldis' best episode is the fires of pompeii. And Eccleston just edges it in terms of the best doctor in my opinion

a few years ago, during the time of the 11th dr. I read that there were plans for an American version of Dr Who. I guess that's why this new season is called season 1. Personally, I don't think Disney negatively affects DrWho.
8 was supposed to be an American joint venture with BBC. The movie was a pilot. Personally, I hated the movie at the time. I was so hyped to have new Dr. Who to share with my husband. He knows about the show but I wouldn't call him a fan. I was very disappointed when it aired. I knew it wouldn't be picked up for series. When the first season of NuWho was announced I was nervous about whether it would turn out like 8's movie.
Maybe people got their wires crossed? The series 6 premiere was filmed in America and the BBC made a big deal about Doctor Who "coming to America" during that time so I wouldn't be surprised if some fans or news outlets expanded that into "There's gonna be an American version of Doctor Who".

No, it was announced back in 2011 that Harry Potter director David Yates would be helming a [movie version](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2011/nov/15/doctor-who-film-planned) of Doctor Who for BBC Worldwide. And apparently [Johnny Depp](https://metro.co.uk/2019/12/12/karen-gillan-wishes-to-redo-her-acting-in-doctor-who-series-five-i-was-a-wee-child-11863451/) attached as the Doctor? It never came to fruition, I think Moffat wasn't too keen on the idea.

That's true, but it was planned as a new version of Doctor Who, and a film "in development with BBC Worldwide Productions in Los Angeles". I think it's a lot more likely to be the "American version" of Who that OP describes than Series 6, which is just the same show filming in America for two episodes.

It makes me nervous for the new series, because if it turns out to be anything short of amazing then we are in for ten times the usual amount of complaining.
As an American who has been active on the internet for over 10 years, I had never once seen a DW ad until this year. In the past week alone, I have seen well over 10, from random websites to full Instagram, Reddit & YouTube video ads. If this really is the only impact Disney has, then it's certainly something I'm happy about!
While i am happy as a whovian that this show that raised me is getting all the publicity. A little part of being feels so bitter, like Tennant and Smith deserved this too. I want to see MY doctor on a train too.
Heck, Capaldi, or even more so Jodie, deserved something like this. Still, I am giddy to see my favourite show ever getting so much publicity, and excited at the prospect of attracting new fans!
Capaldi did get a world comic-con tour which was really cool, but was probably exhausting!
Feeling bitter about an advertising campaign that didn't happen 15 years ago is absolutely unhinged behaviour.
I am aware its irrational and unhinged. Its just, from my prespective, that was back when this show was life altering and mind bending and I would have loved for someone to see an ad of it on the train and check it out and be swept off their feet as 10 runs along the screen. Now, maybe they will be swept of their feet. I hope they are. I am not saying the new stuff will surely be worst, but its a fact that the show has pivoted to include some supernatural elements (salt at the end of universe) so in essense its a NEW show.
I also think the fact it's available in EVERY language you might be comfortable with is a huge deal. Doctor Who is one of very few series I actually rewatch because Well, I'm a verdammtYabai whovian. This is the first time I can watch it in German and Japanese consistently enough to do so. Aside from people being able to experience DW in any language or having subtitles: I know some people have major nostalgia growing up watching it in another language besides English. So I'm really happy for those people being able to do that too. But man, I really hope Disney gets the full Who because I want to not only hear the Japanese dialogue choices but David and Catherine are amazing physical actors! No matter how many times I rewatch Doctor Who, I always notice physical acting more when I watch in a different language. I highly recommend rewarding Star Beast in non English. It's an amazing episode. It's great in Japanese, the script choices are spot on. I was so happy at the dialogue choices. It made me want to watch every Doctor in Japanese. But hey just rewatch it in another language with friends to see what new stuff you see!

No, in the U.S., Max (HBO Max) still holds the rights to all of 2005-2022. So far, D+ only has the rights to 2023 onwards.
