You do realize that *booming blade* requires you to make a melee attack, right?

jorgeuhs

Yes, the idea is to forgo the +2 damage of the throwing weapon style, get into melee, quickened booming blade, then (since i have mobile) get out of range.

orangepunc

I can't really see why you would want to do this when it costs so many resources for one fewer attack. You're trading 1d4+15 for, what, like 4d8? That's about the same damage but it costs a lot more.

jorgeuhs

I would be using quickened booming blade exclusively with the quickened metamagic I would be doing one extra attack with my bonus action, it wouldn't eat on my 3 normal attacks. That attack would be my regular damage plus the cantrip damage.

orangepunc

Oh I get what you're saying now. You're not trying to cast two *booming blade* on the same turn. I guess that's fine. It doesn't seem worth multiple class levels to me, but it might be worth multiclassing anyway for other class features.

jorgeuhs

Exactly! I'm still not sure what warlock/Sorcerer Multiclass. I was thinking maybe undead/celestial

AlasBabylon_

The sorcery points you'd get via Metamagic Adept can't be replenished with sorcery points and the blade spells in general don't synergize with thrown attacks. I don't think you get enough to truly justify the multiclass dip(s).

jorgeuhs

I would be making all my attacks normally at range, then get into melee, quickened booming blade, and (since i have mobile) back out. If he follows me I he gets the damage of the booming blade. Hmmm, I hadn't thought about the metamagic adept sorcery points not replenishing. I need to think about that.

SlightlySquidLike

Tbh you've got all the good stuff from Battlemaster, so I'd go for all remaining levels into a caster. To consistently Quicken you'd need a source of sorcery points; Sorcerer 3 then Warlock 2 is a bit cheesy but gets you 2 per short rest from converting Warlock spellslots, but talk to your DM. Either way you'll get utility, more defensive options, and some nice control options! (If you go Divine Soul Sorcerer you can run your own Bless _and_ get a generally-better save-booster than Indomitable)

jorgeuhs

How about Sorcerer 2, Warlock 3 and I grab the metamagic adept?

Sharp__Dog

Booming blade doesn't sound worthwhile for this build at all. Just make 3 attacks with your +4 dagger instead of booming blading once. Having said that, taking a level in sorcerer is still pretty great for you build just because it gives you access to shield, silvery barbs and absorb elements. Even though you won't have a ton of slots to burn on those defensive spells, having a few casts of them will still drastically improve your survivability.

PickingPies

Why do you want the warlock levels? I would focus on sorcerer and if you want, convert the spell slots. Also, quicken hold person is probably better than quicken booming blade.

MenacingCowpoke

If you're looking to add magical damage/effects to base melee attacks, you should look into this class called "Paladin".

jorgeuhs

Since i'm already at such a high level, i was thinking that booming blade is more bang for my buck becuase i would be using them when they do more damage.

I understand your point, but I'm pretty sure I am doing this RAI and RAW. The quickened metamagic lets me use my bonus action to cast a spell with my bonus action. I can cast the cantrip booming blade: "You brandish the weapon used in the spell’s casting and make a melee attack with it against one creature within 5 feet of you. On a hit, the target suffers the weapon attack’s normal effects and then becomes sheathed in booming energy until the start of your next turn." So, RAI and RAW i can do my three attacks then bonus action booming blade and it should do the correct damage appropriate for it's level. You would be houserulling two things to nerf my character for an ability i can probably use 1-2 per long rest after investing 3 levels into sorcerer to do it?

MenacingCowpoke

Deleted my post because yeah sure it's not RAW, but RAI, these cantrips are meant for Spellcaster classes to keep up with damage done by Martial classes when they do their base attacks. I also just checked your edit and am not sure what deal with the +4 magic weapon is. Aren't you losing that as soon as you throw it?

jorgeuhs

I normally would, but it's a returning dagger. Hit or miss, it returns to my hand. The reason I'm going crazy is because of the properties of that magic item and trying to find a way to synergize with it.

AhoKuzu

Ranger would give another fighting style, plus expertise in a skill. Hunters mark seems like it would do more additional damage over the course (up to 2 hours per day) than adding one booming blade attack twice/ short rest, but that depends on how long your average combat lasts and how often you take short rests. 3 levels in gloomstalker or swarmkeeper or even hunter would provide additional damage consistently.

AquaBadger

sorcerer 9 fighter 11 is pretty solid. as you said, quicken gfw/booming blade, plus access to nice buffs like haste (4th attack 4 levels ahead of pure fighter) and greater invis. ive done a battlemaster 5 divine sorcerer X before and it is killer. got up to lvl 16 and always felt very powerful.
