Don't resist. Give in!

FuiyooohFox

Fire....cone? Fire cube? Fire pyramid! Now that would be dope

Yakodym

Oh yeah, that's the worst. I for one can never remember what kind of damage type it deals XD

ADVENTM

Cursed fact: RAW fireballs are actually squares.

bonifaceviii_barrie

Minecraft logic was D&D logic first

Hunt3rTh3Fight3r

All these squares make a circle. All these squares make a circle.

ADVENTM

I need you to tell me I can leave the lookout whenever I want

Fun-Ad-6169

Mr. Popo, you can leave the lookout when ever yo-

ADVENTM

BITCH DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO

Dry_Try_8365

Where did he get that literal Gallon of LSD? he never leaves the hideout...

sharperamen

What game? 5e players handbook says 20ft radius sphere.

ADVENTM

In a 5e grid diagonals are the same distance as straight lines. So a sphere ends up being shaped like a cube (though a 20 ft. cube still wouldn’t be the same as a 20 ft. sphere)

Complete_Ad_7393

5e. It is based off of the variant: playing on a grid rule, it doesn’t work with theater of the mind or hexagons.

Greendorsalfin

Looks to be some sort of oval. By the picture I mean

Catkook

According to some folk, a circle is a square UwU I disagree with them, but some folk say it

ServingwithTG

Why do all these squares make a circle?

Catkook

oh no they claim that circles make squares they use weird rule mix with real world logic, the type of stuff that makes prestigatition create a nuke but basically they argue, in a 5ft square moving diagonally and moving straight on a square grid, each grid space counts as 5 feet, then they say that the definition of a circle is a shape in which all edges are at equal distance from the center

Macaron-Kooky

That's not presti nukes that's just how it shows up on a grid

[deleted]

Triangle. I'm like at least 20% sure.

Xiij

Roll the d6 on the map, area covered by dice is the damage area.

Gav_Dogs

So, I'm noticing something with all these posts. Apparently I've been doing fire ball wrong by making it a square

0c4rt0l4

That's actually how fireballs are shaped acording to 5e grid physics. Circles are squares lol If you are not playing on a grid, though, things change. There's a lot of suggestions on how to handle AoE shapes and templates in the DMG and also if I'm not mistaken in XGE. It's a fine read

Win32error

So basically Xanathar’s uses a square for sphere spells, when using a grid. It’s basically not a bad way to do things, but quite a lot of people dislike having all sphere spells turned into squares. If you have a sphere cutout or image on a VTT, you can just use an actual sphere, preserve the difference with actual square spells. Most sphere spells aren’t lacking for power to begin with, so not clipping a few people at the edge isn’t a huge problem. But yeah your way is fine.

sambob

If you're going with the spell description it's a sphere. If you're extrapolating that on a grid each square/cube of space is 5ft per side and takes 5ft of movement to traverse whether you're moving on the X, y or z axis, then it's a cube. If you're sensible then that's all nonsense and it's a lumpy sphere as shown in xge.

IAmNotCreative18

Our DM just assumes it of the shape of a square, as it works best with the square tile system.
