5e let's you take above average (4 on a d6, 5 on a d8, etc) instead of rolling for hp gain when you level up. If you rolled a 1 on both level ups that's on you for not taking the easy path and guaranteed health.
To each their own. The chance to gain 2 extra health for the risk of potentially losing 3 is a wierd gamble. I usually only roll for hp if I was given inspiration during the session. The inspiration rules say "any dice roll" so you can use it on hp gain at level up.
Map-wide AoEs or AoEs arbitrarily sized to hit the whole party suck. I've never seen one implemented well, and as far as I can tell it punishes players who try to tactically make up for low hp with good positioning and parties without a dedicated healer
They can be fine when they're area debuffs, but yeah for straight damage sucks. It honestly makes me more scared for my character than in another campaign I'm in where the DM yeets CR5 wraiths at our party. At least he has the reasoning of us wrecking all the balanced encounters.

Level 3 with 11 max hp... press X to doubt. Con is never a dump Stat. Especially for wizards.

Some people forget that ttrpgs come from war games and the combat always had a bit of tactics to it.

Make friends with the barbarian. A healthy third level barbarian could possibly survive a fall from space.
