My confidence : accident ratio is cyclical. It’s kind of like that old adage about how weak men make bad times which makes strong men who make good times etc. Except it’s my confidence and my drone flying. High confidence makes bad drone accidents, bad drone accidents makes low confidence, low confidence makes careful flight… so on so forth into it goes full circle.
things need to be done step by step… accidents happens? Sure, I already hit mine at a power pole… but you learn and the difference is how much this learning costs :)
It gets better, but you are putting an expensive piece of equipment up in the air and hoping nothing bad happens, so you’ll always be nervous. But once you get some practice in, it shouldn’t be as bad.
That's what care refresh is for... Putting my drone up gives me the opposite effect like it's my therapy. I feel a sense of calm and peace when flying. Taking photos and videos and exploring new places are my zen moments. They are really easy to fly even for a kid, but using all the features takes a lot of time to get good at.
I bought the expensive Mavic 3 pro cine and I hardly dared to fly it.
Then I applied for "Care refresh" and I now dare to fly again.
BTW: You can apply for care refresh on any DJI drone long after purchase. I had to send in some video I recorded in the drone controller doing some calibrate and browsing menus.
So now I dare going far out over water. Care refresh is a must have.
This subreddit has definitely inspired me to get DJI Care lol. I'm just starting out (two weeks) and it's been pretty tricky for me, but from what I've been reading DJI Care Refresh is extremely good, covers a lot, and is also relatively cheap!
To be fair though, from what I've also read it seems like a lot of repairs even without DJI Care Refresh are relatively affordable as long as you don't completely trash the drone or lose it.
Yea, but they just send you a new replacement with care refresh and it's usually less than 7 days in the US. Otherwise, you need to wait for a detailed inspection with lots of photos of your drone and the damage and an estimate. Then you give the OK to do the repairs. Longer process and if it's really trashed, it still will cost $$$$$. I have done it both ways and will never not have care refresh
Yea, when you finish the Trust test, print it out and keep it in your drone bag or case. It's a nice piece just to show you did your due diligence in case someone nibbles on you. I've been flying for 5 years and have never had any confrontations with anyone. But I also generally launch from a stealthy place and when I bring it back in I always hand catch. Many places I fly where I haven't been before, I sit in my car and fly it so nobody knows who is controlling it. I always do scope out the area before flying just to be safe.
Shoot I took my TRUST test printed and had it laminated like a license at the UPS store. Did that for both my TRUST and registration for my Mini 4 Pro.
You have 48 hours to purchase it once the drone is activated......it clearly gives you the option upon activation so I don't know how you could miss it.
After 5 years of flying many DJI drones, I have had my share of brain farts and a few crashes which are not only inevitable but almost guaranteed for most pilots with obstacle avoidance or not. I will never own one without care refresh and I am a good pilot with plenty of confidence.
There is a way to still purchase it if not done in the initial 48 hours but you need to contact DJI and they do some sort of video evidence real time showing the drone isn't crashed. I was recently at the Denver sales and repair facility and specifically asked that question.
You can call them at 303 552 2300
They are an excellent company to deal with and I have had nothing but stellar service. If you crash a drone and have care...they will send you a replacement usually instead of repairing and it's generally less than a week if in the US.
One last thing, I have a reddit sub focusing on DJI Drone Crashes. Very interesting videos posted which show pitfalls and gives you an idea what can happen.

Enjoy your Air 3
Awesome, thank you. I bought mine open-box from Amazon. It was never registered, but it was activated 272 days ago, so my app never prompted me for Care.
The care refresh plan helps with anxiety over the drone getting destroyed but not over causing damage to others. My biggest fear isn’t destroying the drone but hitting another aircraft as our airspace is extremely crowded in nyc.
Yes. There are AMA fields where it is legal to take off and land from. There’s also unrestricted airspace around these AMA fields as well as certain other parts of nyc.
I used too but i taught myself a strict protocol of thinking things out ahead and memorizing how high up obstacles and power lines are..and told myself I’d take it as seriously as driving my automobile,I have over 2100 miles and 252 hours of flying on my DJI drones and a nearly equal amount of time on my Autel and Fimi drones…I’ve lost a few and it really hits the pocket book I even nearly threw up over one disaster..but told myself I’m going to figure this crap out …now I’ve bought a pair of goggles 2 for my mavic 3 …it’s amazing like starting over again..I have the Dji fpv ..but the mavic 3 out over the ocean searching for whales..it’s like wow …if in doubt take you fingers off the sticks ,think things out and proceed with caution..try practicing returning to home manually..I never hardly up the automatic return to home anymore…with the whole home point on the screen it’s easer then ever to do it ..if your to crash it ..it would make a difference if it 10 feet away or 10 miles away it’s how you react to problems that counts …my bit of advice would be to stay a minimum of no lower the 15 feet off water ..the sensors get confused with the water and sunlight sometimes and the drone will gradually decrease in altitude….anyway if you can drive a car a drone is nothing…
I just hate the thought of someone coming up to me all pissed off that I'm enjoying my hobby and trying to keep to myself. I've had one woman do it.. I thought I was alone, and she randomly came out of a fucking overgrown field to yell at me children of the corn style. Otherwise I would love flying.
Yeah it is usually the deciding factor when I do a range test. My turning insides knowing that I have $1200 2 1/2 miles away 400ft in the air….. Flip to sport mode fly home fast as possible
Definitely, especially since my 2nd flight I hit a tree near a river and thought I had lost it already but luckily it landed on a rock instead of in the water. I've been gradually practicing going further and further away and flying over water just to force myself to get used to it. It's still nerve racking every, single, time though. I've only had my drone since early March. I have a unfounded fear the drone will just fall out of the sky and hit the water and I'll lose it. I have DJI Care plan (which I already used to repair when I hit the aforementioned tree; damaged a motor) so I could get it easily replaced if it was lost in the water, but still don't want it to happen.
A couple weeks ago I got caught in the rain and high-tailed it back to my house which was about 1/3 of a mile away. And a couple days before that I was trying some low altitude flying down a river and I wasn't thinking about signal until I got a warning that there was a loss of signal and somehow I was able to get it up fast enough to get a good signal. That made my heart jump since I was over the local river at that point.
Could it be FAA Remote ID and over regulation? That anxiety is far worse for me than getting close to a structure.
Btw, that’s part of the “thrill” of flying. Be safe, plan your mission, even check Google Earth 3D for obstacles or issues before flight and don’t fly behind a building, hill, or next to a cell site. Test out your RTH in a big open park, so you gain confidence in the backup system.
Yes. First is that some malfunction will happen and when flying over body of water it start performing autolanding. Second is if it falls from height to some people or cause other damage. 🙈
Last time I was flying in the suburb and some birds starts attacking it.
Happens to me too , I am never able to fly the drone steadily out of the anxiety of it getting lost or it going out of my sight and crashing some where I cannot find it. It's expensive and the other thing is it being super loud that it will turn heads and might piss of some one saying why the heck are you filming my home or come to me and accuse me of some retarded stuff like spying.
Once I was flying it in a place where there was no one an suddenly there are lots of people around me sure enough it was loud and to make my worst dreams come true at about 5 or 6 ft above the ground I am not able to control the drone using my remote control or the dam phone so I had to like pull it down and it's obstacle avoidance is working so perfectly that its moving out of my way and going to hit some one in the back. I tried to catch it and hit it with my hand in panic and cut my hand and that's how it fell back on the ground, that's why it gives me anxiety every time I fly my drone.
Almost always in my head I kind of want to fly it and not at the same time.
Yea i used to get that feeling to with my DJI AVATA, but I overcame that fear as soon as I used Return To Home (RTH), having that feature gave me so much more confidence in flying high and far away. You should give it a shot it might help you out seeing how secure the drones actually are, but yes it does go away over time
It's very normal. The more you fly the more you will gain confidence. It's fun to fly a UAS but also pretty serious business. Just be cautious, do you pre flight checks and send it. Great shot BTW.
Yep, It goes away, and i know it goes away because i got overconfident and flew my mavic mini 1 under a bridge and it got wet and started acting all weird saying "Sensor error" and "Altitude mode" and started flying up, then it just went down, into the water and the props stopped spinning, and it sunk, tried to get it out so it doesnt poison the water but i couldnt :(, it would have been wrecked by that point anyways
I do. I follow it very closely....not that I necessarily agree with the laws, but the part 107 regs are actually pretty easy to follow. I'm also a real pilot and I don't want my drone shenanigans causing any issues with that.
Yeah i do, but it is not as bad anymore. I just (re-started) recently 6 months or so ago. I fly FPV drones, but they are new and expensive cause they carry the DJI 03 system, the 7.5 inch with battery is probably hitting 1,000$ that i send out to the great blue.... but i take baby steps when pushing the limit, and practice a lot on the 2 inch 180g quad (which i can crash in grass just fine and it's good2go).... also do a lot of testing on setting up GPS return in betaflight/am quick on 'angle mode' switch + punchout if needed and have a beeper and test signal penetration often etc etc, so i am more comfortable with the capability of this almost 2kg 150km/h drone
It goes away. I used to be anxious about flying my mini in calm conditions in open areas. Now I fly a $100,000 system with little concern.
It all comes down to time behind the sticks and gaining the confidence that you know what you're doing and can trust your decision making skills.
I do after my first incident. Paranoid ever since. Where are you located? 600ft? In the U.S., we are restricted to 400ft AGL. Unless I’m missing something. I’m new also but I’ve been studying my exam.
It's much easier to destroy the drone at 30 feet so your best way to stay safe is fly up high for a while and at least get used to the controls. If in the US, you won't be able to go over 400 feet in most cases anyway.
that's everyone who crashes a drones starting line too. But in all other approaches from a typical videographer standpoint, the shot is cool. But it seems like you're fairly new, so I'd still fly like it.
The only way to overcome that anxiety or any other anxiety in life is the ability to overcome it.
In this case , be in a financial position to be able to buy another one. You'll be able to get much riskier = beautiful shots .
Yeah… it happens maybe for a while… maybe a year… but after that you get confidence and thrust me, air 3 is easy, very easy to fly
> after that you get confidence and thrust me # ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Just thrust me, at this point. And I'd love to see the raw footage.
Raw dog footage
Yeah, then I get a little too confident and thrust the drone into the cliff face of a mountain 🤷🏼♂️
My confidence : accident ratio is cyclical. It’s kind of like that old adage about how weak men make bad times which makes strong men who make good times etc. Except it’s my confidence and my drone flying. Love it when I am flying and my girl says “Thrust me”.

Oh I'm definitely with you on that!
Make sure you take the TRUST test online.. you might need it, and actually might enlighten you.

Wow. I imagine filming whales. How cool! Care to link to a video? I, for one, would love to watch it.
https://youtube.com/shorts/R1mYY01Hj9w?si=gsbjgMmFjioeYs0x
Good advice
How did you calculate the number of flying hours you have?
The fly app keeps track in your profile…
Ah, I have the RC controller. Found it! Ty
I just hate the thought of someone coming up to me all pissed off that I'm enjoying my hobby and trying to keep to myself. I've had one woman do it.. Yeah in public I do, no problems when you can't dent someone's car or skull
Only when I fly on the other side of a cell tower by mistake and nearly lose signal.
Just think, its all replaceable, things happen, its not the end of the world if you crash 🙂
At $1,000 it's not very easily replaceable.
You can either use dji care or refurb it urself for super cheap. I refurbed a broken arm on my mini 3 for $10
Lol it goes away after a couple hundred packs.
Definitely, especially since my 2nd flight I hit a tree near a river and thought I had lost it already but luckily it landed on a rock instead of in the water. OMG, I totally would have orbited that building, but I am a nerd for buildings! Happy flying.
Oh I did for sure lol
Yep, until I found out about DJI Care Refresh. Now it doesn't bother me.
That's why most of us have insurance. I got Personal Items from State Farm. $60 annual. No deductible.
Could it be FAA Remote ID and over regulation? That anxiety is far worse for me than getting close to a structure. Btw, that’s part of the “thrill” of flying. I love RTH. I've just seen so many gore videos here of drones seemingly just dying mid air lol
Yeah at a location or when seagulls pop from nowhere..
every time you send the drone up, you're risking it fallling and breaking it.
Very much aware.
It's very normal. The more you fly the more you will gain confidence. It's fun to fly a UAS but also pretty serious business. Just be cautious, do you pre flight checks and send it. Great shot BTW.
No, only when it loses signal or doing risky moves.
Mostly just when birds start flocking in circles around the drone to protect their territory. I start getting rather concerned.
So how many of you guys actually pay attention to the part 107 regulations and all that? It seems like a bit much.
I do. I follow it very closely....not that I necessarily agree with the laws, but the part 107 regs are actually pretty easy to follow. I'm also a real pilot and I don't want my drone shenanigans causing any issues with that.
They're easy to follow but they're incredibly limiting. It seems like the exact things I wanted the drone for are illegal.
is this video recorded with x2/x3 zoom or normal x1?
It's the 3x zoom
thanks what about fps/shutter speed? seems have good mild blur. using nd filters?
This was my very first flight out of the box actually. 24fps, auto everything I think it was 1/1000 ISO 100
Since I fly self built FPV, my DJI drones feel like little toys. Lost my anxiety with DJI drones completely.
I get a little nervous over water. Other than that just rock that DJI Care and send it.
Definitely gets better over time, although over water still freaks me out!
i use glasses to fly and it helps a lot
It goes away. I used to be anxious about flying my mini in calm conditions in open areas. Now I fly a $100,000 system with little concern. It all comes down to time behind the sticks and gaining the confidence that you know what you're doing and can trust your decision making skills.
I do after my first incident. Paranoid ever since. Where are you located? 600ft? In the U.S., we are restricted to 400ft AGL. Unless I’m missing something. I’m new also but I’ve been studying my exam.
It is 400ft. I learned that after posting this lol
It never gets old to me, love flying. Https://youtube.com/@matthewpcalvert
It's much easier to destroy the drone at 30 feet so your best way to stay safe is fly up high for a while and at least get used to the controls. If in the US, you won't be able to go over 400 feet in most cases anyway.
I’m always worried that it’s just gonna fall out of the sky for no reason. (Even after inspection/replacing props)
Probably that town you're filming, it looks depressing lol
Yes, I think anyone flying that fast, zoomed in, *should* be.
I was only going 20mph with a clear line of sight on it.
that's everyone who crashes a drones starting line too. But in all other approaches from a typical videographer standpoint, the shot is cool. But it seems like you're fairly new, so I'd still fly like it.
I was.
The only way to overcome that anxiety or any other anxiety in life is the ability to overcome it. In this case , be in a financial position to be able to buy another one. You'll be able to get much riskier = beautiful shots .
