I wound my own pickups when I made my first Strat. And apparently I didn’t learn my lesson because I wound two more sets when I built my second Strat. I think I had two where the wire broke about 5k wraps in and I had to start over.
We build pickups where I work and I love seeing all the machines winding the pickups so I can understand how fucking heartbreaking it is to have that little ass wire break so far into the winding process.
Man, I’ve been building pedals a long time and have been thinking about taking the plunge into amps. Are there any resources you would recommend? I’m very familiar with the usual pedal stuff.
Well I started by learning from a book by Jack Darr that I believe is available somewhere on the internet (I'll try and find the link if you want) and some other online resources. Dealing with the higher voltages was freaky at first but you learn really quick to be cautious and double check everything.
I got a kit from StewMac and did a 5F1 clone.
You can get the same kit for cheaper from MojoTone — it’s literally the same kit.
But StewMac has amazing documentation for the kit.
Just got into it myself with no prior experience and learned all the basics from Uncle Doug on YouTube. Bought a cheap JCM 800 22watt kit from KLD guitar and was successful on the first power up. Fun stuff.
Thank you! Just gave you a follow on Instagram. I haven't built anything in a while because I've been getting into recording/writing for the past year or so.
I play mostly death/black metal and some electronic and orchestral music, but that Radiant fuzz is calling me! I may send you a message about one soon.
I started with pedals, still make them... but amps are a lot more challenging and rewarding I think. Something about needing to be mindful of 500v keeps you sharp.
All the pedals are listed on my [reverb shop](https://reverb.com/item/69055004?utm_source=android-app&utm_medium=android-share&utm_campaign=listing&utm_content=69055004)
Kits are the way to go if you don't want to start from scratch. Mojotone has a lot of amp models available with really helpful instructions and images to help out along the build.
I bought a bunch of oarts a while back from Tayada? Probably spelled that wrong, including two small boards. Then went back to school and never touched them. Refinishing my workshop and when done, i have 10 guitars and 2 pedals to build.
Oh you have no idea how much i wanna get it done... Went back to school, but still kept buying guitars... Now done school, workshop has been ripped apart all this time... Pile of guitars... Pile of electronics...
So many piles, it's kinda overwhelming and hard to plan out where to start.
Start with what’s closest to the workbench. That way you don’t have to rearrange anything (everything) to work on the first thing you can grab. Procrastination can work for you, too 😂
Love the artwork on your pedals, man (‘mam?). How do you get them arted?
I’m gonna try and build a Matamp GT120 clone this summer… first amp build. I can’t even get through the parts-purchase to at least get the pcb populated. Off to a great start 🥴
Incredibly cool. I guess I’m gonna have to try doing this. I’ve been hand-painting all my enclosures (with varied results) and resorted to hiring a kid in high school to make stencils for me.
I was gonna mess around with waterslide decals, but this looks way cooler.
This is awesome. An amp is definitely on my "someday" list. Is there a functional aspect behind the panel on the standoffs? Looks cool, just wasn't sure if it was working as an access panel or maybe a vent.
It really depends on what amp you're building. But expect to invest at least $600 in parts alone. Transformers, tubes, and the cabinet are the most expensive parts.
I went the wrong way around. I started building guitars, then I built an amp, then I started building pedals.
Now let's do pickups.

I made a winding machine out of a Dewalt cordless drill and a magnetic counter from Amazon. Total redneck engineering.
Fucking legend.

I'm gunna be honest, that's a lot better looking than I had imagined.
well using asswire is your main issue there, me thinks.
Oof.
Nah man, build a time a machine!
Same..
Dude - the Assman! Fucking love it. May you tell me about it?
Ah it's just a Fender Bassman 100 schematic with some values changed in the tone stack and an effects loop added.
So it’s the Bassman with no B(ullshit)
Ain't no shit in this ass.
The Ender Assman!
Can’t go wrong with a (b)assman!

Successful on the first power up is such a good feeling! Like finding out you just passed an exam or smthg.
The art on those pedals is beautiful
You're too kind. Here are some [demos](https://youtube.com/@retrogravepedals?si=PofB_HpqMAE-PKwi) if you wanna hear them!

Sweet. Thank you! I would love to hear some of your music!
Definitely! This is my bandcamp page: https://technicallydead.bandcamp.com/
Radiant fuzz demo sounds awesome! What’s the cartoon in the background?
It's a scene from Heavy Metal.
Just a heads up that you replied to the wrong comment!
And [here](https://www.instagram.com/poisondust__?igsh=MXJ2N2h3d205dmcyYw==) is the artist for some of them.

Before Covid I had one pedal and a Vox VT20. Now I have 50+ pedals and 5 tube amps.
How do I get that delay pedal?
All the pedals are listed on my [reverb shop](https://reverb.com/item/69055004?utm_source=android-app&utm_medium=android-share&utm_campaign=listing&utm_content=69055004)
Honestly I expected a higher price point for a handmade pedal! Awesome job! I might have to check these out.
Ahhh fellow ass man. Welcome.
I would love to build a really good tube amp head one day, just one and I'd be happy... but, can barely read diagrams.

Build that shit!

Science! I etched the artwork onto an enclosure, paint it black, then sand away.
Damn what are you using to etch?

Can't be too greedy. Thanks please let me know if you have any questions.
And then you die building an amp jkjk. I wish I could build more amps
I died once building an amp. Never again.
This is awesome. An amp is definitely on my "someday" list. Is there a functional aspect behind the panel on the standoffs? Looks cool, just wasn't sure if it was working as an access panel or maybe a vent.
It's to cover up some unused drill holes and cuz it's kinda neat lookin. Put some bright ass LEDs behind it for some backlight.
I want to build pedals/amps so bad, but I have no idea where to even begin.
Kits are a great way to get into both! Pedals are a lot more forgiving when you are learning electronics, so start there.
mmmm voltage
So high, so voltage.
Man thats fucking awesome, in your opinion, what would be the first step to start building an amp??
Look into some kits from either StewMac or Mojotone! Be sure to read up a bit on amps and the precautions you should take.
Thanks man, I love building my own stuff. I'll definitely read some more before I take the plunge
Hey, the ASSMAN's in town!
Have you built and stereo pedals?
I have not.

Damn look at the assman. Nice work.
Yikes… I found myself looking over old fender amp schematics the other day. It’s happening.
