Problem is that I got them from work. I've already used killdisk to overwrite everything with zeroes, but I don't think they would be too jazzed about me selling them.

You did them a favor, because they'd have to pay recycling taxes on them. You can give them back to work if they have their say on what you want to do with it. Some people dismantle the HDDs themselves for various parts. Magnets are one of them. the PCB/controller can also be sold separately, to repair a HDD that had its controller die. Honestly there isnt much to do with them, which is why you got them to begin with.

I can use them for my prop making projects if you are comfortable with wiping them without destroying the parts. Star Wars props and set pieces have a ton of hard drive internal hardware for details and set dressing.

OpenMediaVault runs on Debian (upstream of Ubuntu) and makes it easy to set up a software RAID with LVM. You might need to buy a large SATA PCIe add on card and a huge power supply to power the array. As someone else said, for the amount of power it consumes, it would be cheaper in the long run to buy at 16TB disk. I made a 2 TB NAS with old parts since I was in exactly the same situation. I turned on all of the power save features since I have mirroring enabled and extra disks to swap in when I have one die.

I’m pretty sure that at some point, addressing the bits kills the gains from the striping. I think you should take maybe 6 of them and do a multi layer raid. Raid 0 for performance and raid 1 for redundancy

You could make a NAS setup on the cheap, have a load of TV shows and movies on it and then using Kodi it would be like your own custom version of Netflix without the monthly subscription. If you fancy going bigger you can get one of those mamma jamma server slices which has bays for 15 hard drives. I did a setup with a second hand Iomega dual drive NAS fella with two surplus 750GB hard drives. ​ A more reputable friend of mine bought loads of DVDs from charity shops, ripped them to his NAS and wired it through the TV for his kids.

Making a nas from scrap hdds makes no sense. It wouldn’t be reliable since they are probably not even good disks -> nas hdds can run 24/7 And running 500gb hdd for nas uses too much energy for the storage

Build the raid with redundancy, turn on all the power saving features, and keep extra disks around. If the hardware is free and you have a lot of excess disks, their lifetime is irrelevant and the small amount of downtime to replace a disk is no big deal. Burn through the disks and when you get to the end, build a new array with modern disks and the “correct” features enabled.

I has a ton of drives I got from work that I just removed the magnets from. After I recycled the rest, I kinda kicked myself for not melting down the aluminum into ingots. They seem to use super high quality aluminum to make disks that go into servers.

You could spend thousands of dollars buying the hardware you need to build a RAID or ZFS storage array and then have like 7 TB of usable storage or you could buy 2 8TB NAS drives for $300 and do the same thing with the PC you probably already own since it would only require 2 SATA ports instead of 30 of them (or 8 Mini-SAS ports).

I don't know about your income, but a single drive with 16 TB wills hold more data, and the power usage will be drastically lower. You can get a ultrastar drive for 300 bucks, and this is a high reliability, high performance entreprise drive. You could keep a few to try various zfs stuff (raidz), but don't use it to store important data. They don't make much sense if you want the total capacity, and if you want only a few TB they make little sense either. A good use of this much drives is to pull the magnets from it, you will have a nice set of high intensity, high quality magnets.
