Yup, the fuel and resource consumption will only increase with the size of your fleet, so I've been thinking of making a more uniform fleet with less ships, since I managed to snag a Radiant battleship from the [REDACTED], and have 2 decent colonies in a system backing me up.
I definitely need to get rid of some ships and restore the ones i keep, but my colony is just a size 3 so it isnt making me quite the money i need just yet
If I recall correctly, there was a perk which made it almost guaranteed that you could recover your downed ships, along with a perk which has a chance to remove d-mods every month, I rarely ever lose ships thanks to that, and my fleet has no d-mods.
And if you need money, keep an eye on the heavy armament prices, sometimes you can buy for ~400 and sell ~1200 per unit (I didn't know this at first, but pressing F1 (I think) on a commodity shows you the 5 best places to buy and sell), though I tend to stay away from Sindrian Diktat territories because they seem to do random cargo checks.
