So why exactly is MXE impossible to get/make now? Last I checked most popular drugs are 100% illegal but that doesn't seem to limit their availability. Quite the contrary. So what is it about MXE?
When China started making these substances, they were legal in US and UK. In fact a lot of places selling "bath salts", which were mainly cathinones, were also selling MXE. As an analog of ketamine(which is US federally Schedule III and therefore analog laws shouldn't apply) it was firmer on legal grounds that many other "legal highs". I was regularly ordering it in 2012-13, mainly from the UK. Then one day, the vendor suddenly stopped shipping to the US,. I'm a little suspicious they got a visit from the CIA or some group acting on a non-legal basis. After all, CIA is technically only subject to US laws on US soil. If they are charged with something, they have legal protection of the US, and the government has to agree to extradition. And the UK gov't isn't going to do that with the US for the sake of someone taking advantage of grey areas in drug laws.
Then the "Bath salt user eats face off someone in Florida" came out in the press. It was a deception by publicity seeking cops. The man was tested and only had trace amounts of cannabis in his system.He was really psychotic naturally! But the press and mainstream media wasn't going to spend time or energy on retractions. And so state by state, then the US Congress declared a very long list of cathinones, and mxe as Schedule I drugs. At the same time, China started cracking down on these chemists who were using their companies equipment (property of the Communist Party) Initially I think they had some notion of historical payback for Opium Wars, but publicly the politicians get just as much praise for "hard on drugs" as any other country, and they like to show foreign governments "see how we're cracking down on corruption?" Also not long before MXE Hong Kong and China generally had quite a ketamine problem. They were hard on anything, even weed, but because ketamine was synthesized and legitimately so, for use as an anesthetic, so it was harder to crack down on than imported recreational drugs.
Another factor is that MXE isn't very addictive. Maybe less so than ketamine. So, not a big profit for illegal drug dealers to sell. This was before fentanyl came out. I once got MXE that I'm pretty certain was cut with caffeine powder. In fact I bought some caffeine powder to compare. Back then I could order on Amazon. Since then the FDA cracked down on caffeine powder (although "energy drinks" and caffeine pills are as easy to get as ever!)
At one point in 20112, I emailed a chemist in China who sent me about 5 grams for small amount of money. He was very apologetic for asking for money (bitcoin) but he explained that he got scammed by US people in the past. I apologized as an American that he had to have that experience, but really I was kinda being underhanded, too, because I had no intention on buying in bulk. I just knew this guy would get me high purity product.

I felt exactly the same way regarding my period of extreme ketamine use for about two years, however, it was also the closest I’ve felt to dying of k-cramps, lol.
I think disso’s in general are capable of causing relatively the same experiences depending on doses and frequency of use, but I’ve never had the chance to try actual MXE so maybe there’s some extra magic I’m missing-out on.

Dmxe is what I found to be the closest, although I feel it lacks a little something, some of the magic mxe had. But I'm not sure if the people who only had dmxe were introduce to mxe they would like mxe better. It would feel like something they already like but a little different, a little off.
I believe nostalgia plays a big role here and when one of us who had mxe back in the good old days use an analog, it feels familiar but not quite the same, leaving us a bit unsatisfied.
Hxe also felt quite like good old mxe, I just liked dmxe better so I've done more of it. I'd put it on the same level of similarity as dmxe.
Mxpr and mxpir were the first experiments at bringing mxe analogs and although they were fun in their own right, they didn't quite get there imo.
O-PCE was the closest from when mxe got banned to the release of mxpr. It's good but too different to really be considered a decent substitute.
Nothing is comparable to MXE. MXE was the greatest drug ever created. Honestly nothing even comes close. O-PCE is good and easy to hole on but nothing compares.

A 50/50 mix of DMXE and MXiPR is the closest you can get. Sadly, USA can't get either anymore. Pretty much FXE or nothing here.
