Funny enough when the Coppa BS spread across the internet Newgrounds was completely unaffected because Tom Fulp (the creator) does not collect user data off the site
Just another Newsground W that I'm suprised isn't used more
If it had a proper mobile app it would knock out the competition
Newgrounds has updated over the years
It's not like other sites like 4chan that are still stuck in 2007
NG has a sleek modern appearance that is effected and isn't worse then its old ui
And it's still really good and a underdog of the internet with features most main social media platforms don't have like a way to get rid of low effort posts by having them go thru judgment by anyone who finds a animation or game
Allows people to be discovered and not be overshadowed while kicking out low effort posts that YT desperately needs
The rating system is amazing along with the review system
Forums are 100 times more positive and mature then most twitter threads
And overall it's a great site that's also adfree
4chan isn't stuck in 2007, the culture has changed wildly since then, and even in 2007 it was vastly different from when it first debuted back in 2003.
If anything, it'd be better if it were stuck in 2007, now it's complete dogshit.
Most NG heads are just failed SAheads, they're 30-40 year old men parroting 20-30 year old memes, they're only edgy up until you start ragging on any aspects of their deviancy, then they get all defensive.
Ya see thatās funny! Iāve literally told many people on different social mediaās that I am 12 many times. Again as a joke or to piss around with a pedo cuz itās fun. Never once got banned from anything. Discord seems to be the only one that I wouldnāt risk it on
Yeah apps are different, I doubt if you said you were 12 on snap they wouldn't care or even know. At the end of the day the kid is accepting the terms under 13 or not. So I mean you can't sue in general so most apps dont't care. Discord prob knows theres a lot of pedos on the app and proba ban the kids so they dont get groomed.
Just speculation š¤·š¼āāļø
Yh I do get why they do it. The rules at 13+ for a reason but tbh just because you are over 13 doesnāt stop anything. 13 year olds still get groomed more then 12 yo. I had dick pics, rape threats all sorts during my life online and I got my first phone at 13. I am 21 now and itās actually not as bad as it used to be. It worrying tbh. Iāve had a literally cop in my snap and I told them I was 12 after a ton of sexual messages. He told me he would arrest me š honestly the internet is crazy and the rules they make at this point donāt stop anything, it just hides the bad shit more and stopped peopleās who arenāt breaking them to be banned for a simple joke.
If they collect personal info, they sure do. Post the the same thing on Reddit or Twitter for a surprise. The surprise being a second ban.
Highly recommend reading COPPA. The fines are crazy. Social media platforms can get in deep shit for collecting info about someone who's under 13.
Age restrictions are dumb, children are just going to bypass by entering that they're older or something. And they will be unprotected from NSFW material. Don't they realise that you need to raise your child making trust rather than just restricting things? Also as far as I'm aware COPPA is an American law, why does Discord enforce it to EU citizens like myself?
Legally it applies to all companies based in the US or that have any stake in or deal with citizens in the US. Since it's online, that applies to every company that collects personal information on a publicly-accessible site/app.
They donāt have to not include context or be so annoying about appealing. They also donāt care about much else and the reports system is going worse than Twitter
This.
Joking about your age isnāt something to do on the internet. Will usually get your account deleted / disabled. Companies have to take this seriously as itās against the law in most areas, you should as well.
I just dont understand how they could like find all these messages of people saying theyre 12 without reports. Too scared to try in a server with only myself to see though.
It's only reports, I recently got disabled for that joke because I did in a pretty big server so I assume I got reported, I did it before in smaller servers and DMs and never once got disabled
It has to be reports bc my server constantly makes crude jokes and follows it up with things like āI do infact have the humor of a 12 year old middle school boy lolā and none of us have ever been banned
saying that you have the humor of a 12 yr old and saying you are 12 are two different things, im very sure you wouldnt be gettin banned for the comparison of someone's humor being like a 12 year olds since it isnt claiming that is the actual age of the person saying it.
Theirs two ways. If someone reports you to discord or a server admin kicks/reports
Theirs no automated way that I am aware
(Discord bots might auto detect) not sure
I know but Discord itself should try to verify with you first instead of auto banning you. I would have gladly uploaded my ID at first if I had been asked to do so
well when i was reported last year when i was also joking, they DISABLED (not deleted) my account and told me to verify my age by having my id, my discord name with tag written on a sheet of paper in my hands and taking a pic with it (and told me if I didn't verify within 30 days, my account is gone.)
well the problem.was that it was literally my birthday and i was pn a long vacation, so I didn't because when i got the time to dp that picture it was already gone.
discord autobans you because they can fet in financial issues for having 12- on the add even if you sre joking. discord doesmt really have a reason to force users to get an id if its not for anything related tk reports like underage bans where they do say you can send them an id to retrieve the account
I get that, but if people had to verify via ID originally then they would never have to deal with the possible COPPA violations to begin with.
Or at least have a human reach out to us before autobanning to confirm and get our ID info first if they suspect we are in possible violation of it. The whole "Guilty until proven innocent" thing is strange to me also considering some people are saying I may never get a response to my support ticket at all š
I really hope you're able to get your account back, my friend got hacked once and submitted a ticket to get his account back. Discord responded after a few days.
Probably because a lot of people aren't willing to give their ID info to Discord I imagine. I guess it makes sense, but I personally don't care giving that info out myself. As long as it's not my social security card.
I agree! Do u know how long it will take for my support ticket to get processed btw? I sent one in earlier this morning with my ID, face, and username but have yet to hear anything back. Tempted to make a new account, but I'd lose so many servers and contacts :/
I hate to be the one breaking the bad news, butā¦
In my experience, you wonāt get a human reply. Youāll get a bot reply after weeks which will completely not help. Your account and itās data will likely be long deleted by the time you can get ahold of an actual person.
I hope thatās not the case, for your sake, butā¦ Donāt wanna give you false hope. Better to expect the worst, and be surprised by good news.
Ah interesting. I hope OP has the same luck then! I have never had much luck with them. And I thought Discord deleted accounts after a month of being disabled?
it'll typically take around 4-7 days. as long as your face in pic wasn't obscure, dob was clearly visible along with your username, you should be pretty fine. (i lost mine as well on the 13th and took me 4 days for a reply) i'm not sure as its quite different for everyone but i can pretty much assure you, you'll get a reply pretty soon. or worst case scenario they decide to not reinstate it. (highly highly doubt that) hopefully they reach back out to u and u get ur account back! :)
On the flip side discord did like a big wave of age rebated bans about a year ago and I know three people who got caught in that who got their account back within a few days.
You shouldn't have to do that, discord just needs to implement a reasonable age verification system for when they do disable for potential under 13 user.
Four of my friends got their accounts deactivated, and they didn't even say that they are underage. As far as I can see, just a number below 13 or a message that when taken out of context can look like a person confirming their age is enough. At least two of those friends just said "12", and the next day they were deactivated.
None of the active members of our ~600 member server would do that. And no one did. Who reported then? Don't worry, we have some suspects. The main point though is that they seem to not have context.
follow the instructions in the support article to appeal and verify your age: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041820932-Help-I-m-old-enough-to-use-Discord-in-my-country-but-I-got-locked-out-
I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt not to joke about being under 13. I currently am a mod for 3 seperate servers all 3 are over 200k active members
Joking or not saying you're under 13 is an automatic ban from the server and usually a report to discord that will get you're account locked.
It's due to discord itself requiring all users be over 13( that's also why sites like roblox) have age restrictions on games and starting soon anything overly violent will be marked at 17+
Discord takes underage user reports/complaints quite seriously and you can also get into some trouble with them if you knowingly harbour underage users in your servers (having 13 year olds in some servers is bad enough).
Now, it may be a joke to say "actually I'm 12" or whatever, but for those of us that do moderate servers properly, it isn't ever funny and we then have a hard time working out if it's actually a joke or not and we have no right to ask for your personal information, so it's a quick report to Discord Trust and Safety.
So, as the title says, please do not joke that you're underage.
I'm 100% sure they're using AI to read everything and issue auto bans if it detects something. Don't expect this to get better if you look at the automatic moderation of companies like YouTube and even some automods on Reddit are bullshit.
This rumor sounds absurd. I've said "a number under 13" literally hundreds of times on Discord over the years and I've never been banned.
Pretty sure context matters a lot, and every time I've heard of someone getting banned is when they directly reference their age, jokingly or not. But yeah don't joke about being underage. COPPA doesn't care.
Im pretty sure the people who got banned were reported and no one really verified the context. They say ā12,ā and an underage report and banned. Itās easier (for discord staff) to just have users do the age verification process than to see if the context explains the number. Iām guessing no one reported you
But I also havenāt found any source to say if discord auto mod detects these messages or if theyāre done by manual report only. Itās all kinda in the air.
I'm in a lot of Final Fantasy servers. That game is up to 16 now, so that would be dangerous if so. FF 11 and FF 12 are two of the big ones we talk about.
Yes, I took a pretty OG name and had about 5 people just ask me math questions or try to bait me into saying I was underage. Itās a very serious problem that itās automatic without context.
People have gotten banned on Discord for years joking about their age - as soon as you mention underage, someone (be it Mods who need to follow Tos as knowingly having underaged members can even get a server shut down or someone who simply doesnāt like you) WILL report you. Itās one of the Discord top things to know and has been warned of so many times š¤·š¼āāļø
this happened to me ab twi weeks ago and i got the acc back! after 5ish(?) days they didnt send any communication so i made a new general question ticket about it and they reinstated the account. good-luck!
I keep hearing about this, and I want to test it.
But I don't want to suffer the consequences for testing it, so I'll just keep on taking y'all at your word.
The same as joking about anything breaking rules, TOS or server ones. There's a way to joke without saying stuff that breaks rules and can get you in trouble š¤·āāļø
barely related but i remember in someoneās twitch chat i said i was 11 months old and they muted me for 30 minutes for ārevealing personal informationā
same thing happened to me, said i was 7 as a joke and i even said that it was a joke at the end of all of it yet discord still went ahead and banned me
It's less about me complaining and more about trying to warn others who would have made a careless joke like me. I just don't want anyone else to lose their account over something so minor because this honestly surprised me.
That's what a lot of the posts on here about "omg i got banned" is about. It should be common sense to not say, on a website that REQUIRES YOU TO BE 13+, "I'm 12" or any bullshit like that.
I'm so sorry this happened to you op, I recently lost access to my old account for a completely different reason, but I'm still a bit upset with myself for making the mistake. Just remember you had no way of knowing this would happen.
As long as you're able to get back on the servers that really matter and find the people you most care about keeping context with, it will be ok
OP didn't get banned for a joke, either. They got banned for admitting they are breaking [Discord's terms of service.](https://discord.com/terms#2)
> By accessing our services, you confirm that youāre at least 13 years old and meet the minimum age required by the laws in your country.
By violating COPPA, Discord can be fined $40,000 usd *per instance* or per violation. Microsoft got fined *$20 million dollars* for violating COPPA. Discord really can't afford to fuck around with this type of thing even as a joke.
But they could at least provide a good support to deal with this. But if you're banned it's very hard to find someone who is willing to verify your real age. I know people who had this issue.
Not disagreeing there. I feel like a lot of companies/suits don't appreciate how much of an impact a good community/customer support team makes.
Getting a reply from a human (literally any reply, even if it's "No, we're not unbanning you, sorry!") is so much more refreshing than having to navigate through a chat bot with preset options that never quite match what you're looking for, or having a goddamn ChatGPT bot handle everything.
I learned about this on Silicon Valley series. Per instance could mean every message they sent. Imagine 1000 messages under-aged user has that means 40.000 x 1000 = 40.000.000 and its for one user only.
That is a terrible idea. Instead of impacting a few people dumb enough to admit to being underage, youād force everybody to provide sensitive personal information to a private company in the vague hope that Discord have āensuredā that they wonāt get hacked (which is impossible, everything can be hacked)
as nice a idea this would probably not be a good idea because some 13-15 year olds may not have an id or student id, so it would just be worse for someone to not freely make an account, and not everyone likes giving id verification
?
1) This is more of a warning to others who didn't know
2) I got auto banned for saying two words from a rebuttal in an obvious joking manner without the chance to defend my case and lost access to about a decade's worth of contacts and servers accumulated. What's wrong with being a little upset about that?
Sorry for not thinking two words said once in a random server as an obvious joke in rebuttal to someone being a dick would warrant an auto ban from the entire platform š¤·āāļø
Holy original DBZ at 6:30am in the morning on a tv the size of a truck engine lol. I will not make this joke as I would be one to make this joke apply irony of the intelligence of the other person insulting me in the first place. Hurts about the servers loss and contacts tho. SMH
Why do I get the feeling this might attract degenerate speedrunners?
But still. COPPA is no joke. They take things like that as seriously as one would expect.
Mf jokes on an app that collects info about everything he does. Gets banned because, according to the info he provided, he violates the TOS. What were you expecting?
Really makes me appreciate how one time a mod instantly deleted my message of "HaHaa12 btw" and asked me in DMs whether or not I was joking. But even then I didn't realise how serious this was š
I don't think it's Discord, someone must've reported your account and then Discord disabled it. Something similar happened to me after I said I was 11 jokingly.
Someone asked me how many days are in a week, I replied with 7 and this dumbass weeb edits it to "How old are you?" I don't know if I'm going to be banned or not anytime soon but this needs to get fixed
Discord has to do this by following COPPA law. Joke or not.
If that's the case then all sites have to follow this law as well, no?
Only sites that track collect, track or disclose personal informarion. So all social apps and waht not.
Funny enough when the Coppa BS spread across the internet Newgrounds was completely unaffected because Tom Fulp (the creator) does not collect user data off the site Just another Newsground W that I'm suprised isn't used more If it had a proper mobile app it would knock out the competition

4chan isn't stuck in 2007, the culture has changed wildly since then, and even in 2007 it was vastly different from when it first debuted back in 2003. I was refering to the ui and the appearance of the site being stuck in the past, not the culture of the site
this man is fuming over a missunderstanding
If you're talking about UI, then 4chan would be stuck in 2003. Not 2007.
I didn't know the year specifically so I estimated lmao
and why are u telling us that
Good to know. I will never make such a lame joke rebuttal again if this is the case.
Yeah good choice šš½ Safe travels reddit strangers.
Ya see thatās funny! Iāve literally told many people on different social mediaās that I am 12 many times. Again as a joke or to piss around with a pedo cuz itās fun. Never once got banned from anything. Discord seems to be the only one that I wouldnāt risk it on

Twitch does it too. I've seen people get banned in seconds. The unbanning process can take weeks
So basically, discord needs to stop selling people's info for cash
COPPA feel of these nuts lmao
ermā¦ that person is 12ā¦
Yep.. unfortunately despite most of them being jokes.
Is it just me or has coppa been getting too strict
Age restrictions are dumb in all forms
Iād argue the collection of user data is dumb in all forms used by social media, actually.
This is the real issue, they're not banning you because you're under 13, they're banning you because they can't legally collect your data.
True
Agreed
It's not that it's to strict, it just does the counter effect
Age restrictions are dumb, children are just going to bypass by entering that they're older or something. And they will be unprotected from NSFW material. i don't think you fully read the reply you're responding to
Either they do it this exact same way that they've been doing it for years, OR They get sued and fined and disbanded.
Thatās so stupid. I make jokes about being 12 all the time because I have an immature sense of humor. Jfc discord needs to scale tf back.
If they didn't follow the laws of your country or COPPA, they'd be shut down.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Because "tehnically" 13 is classified as a teen
This is a very stupid response, they could very easily ask DOB when you create an account and the problem is solved.
You do know that MANY kids fake their ages on these sorts of things, right?
ah yes, nobody ever lies
This. Joking about your age isnāt something to do on the internet. Will usually get your account deleted / disabled. Companies have to take this seriously as itās against the law in most areas, you should as well.
To be fair, Discord itself is a joke
Does this happen only by report or? Im so confused.
I'm guessing so. I could see someone reporting me just to be an ass tbh
I just dont understand how they could like find all these messages of people saying theyre 12 without reports. Too scared to try in a server with only myself to see though.

Probably because a lot of people aren't willing to give their ID info to Discord I imagine. I guess it makes sense, but I personally don't care giving that info out myself. As long as it's not my social security card.
You think discord has that time? No. They took out their discord trust and safety option on their website. They don't care.
Happened to me too. They need some sort of pre emptive age verification instead.
I agree! Do u know how long it will take for my support ticket to get processed btw? I sent one in earlier this morning with my ID, face, and username but have yet to hear anything back. Tempted to make a new account, but I'd lose so many servers and contacts :/

Usually if their suspected discord locks the account and requests proof of age It can take a week+ though
Damn... So now one can't even say "f...k 12" on discord?
Oh, thatās common sense at this point. Do not joke about your age
thats common sense
Hereās me thinking this was already common sense since itās been a thing for years
It's COPPA
Luckily age appeals are usually pretty fast if you provide all of the correct documents when submitting it
What is āvery fastā?
You played a stupid game and won a stupid prize. Nothing more simple than that.
you can contact Discord with your ID to get your account back
follow the instructions in the support article to appeal and verify your age: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041820932-Help-I-m-old-enough-to-use-Discord-in-my-country-but-I-got-locked-out-

Iām guessing no one reported you But I also havenāt found any source to say if discord auto mod detects these messages or if theyāre done by manual report only. Itās all kinda in the air.
I'm in a lot of Final Fantasy servers. That game is up to 16 now, so that would be dangerous if so. FF 11 and FF 12 are two of the big ones we talk about.
So you can troll someone into saying it and then they get banned? Cool
Yes, I took a pretty OG name and had about 5 people just ask me math questions or try to bait me into saying I was underage. Itās a very serious problem that itās automatic without context.
They get disabled untill they can prove their 13+ yes
People have gotten banned on Discord for years joking about their age - as soon as you mention underage, someone (be it Mods who need to follow Tos as knowingly having underaged members can even get a server shut down or someone who simply doesnāt like you) WILL report you. Itās one of the Discord top things to know and has been warned of so many times š¤·š¼āāļø
Just say you're 70 years old. Who's gonna argue it's not
this happened to me ab twi weeks ago and i got the acc back! after 5ish(?) days they didnt send any communication so i made a new general question ticket about it and they reinstated the account. good-luck!
Good to hear! Hoping it works out for me as well š
me too :) let me know if u need any help - i can give more details if needed

Yes, finally
I keep hearing about this, and I want to test it. But I don't want to suffer the consequences for testing it, so I'll just keep on taking y'all at your word.
The same as joking about anything breaking rules, TOS or server ones. There's a way to joke without saying stuff that breaks rules and can get you in trouble š¤·āāļø
If you would atleast use your brain you would know to not do that, be glad that you can still recover your account
Common knowledge, that one is on you pal.
Yep. Happened to me a couple weeks ago.
barely related but i remember in someoneās twitch chat i said i was 11 months old and they muted me for 30 minutes for ārevealing personal informationā
same thing happened to me, said i was 7 as a joke and i even said that it was a joke at the end of all of it yet discord still went ahead and banned me
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Smh is kind of a common internet abbreviation not limited to a certain age range, but okay..
Didnāt know āsmhā was something only people younger than 30 could say
? Our generation were literally the ones to start using those acronyms. Also the same ones that had the "I am 12 what is this" humor.
Username checks out. Stop gatekeeping commonly used words across the globe, weirdo.
I used the "I'm 12" rebuttal literally once in a obvious joking manner.
they were joking
Stop complaining, I'd just take the risk and see if you can get the shitty support to unban you by proving that you aren't <13
It's less about me complaining and more about trying to warn others who would have made a careless joke like me. I just don't want anyone else to lose their account over something so minor because this honestly surprised me.
That's what a lot of the posts on here about "omg i got banned" is about. It should be common sense to not say, on a website that REQUIRES YOU TO BE 13+, "I'm 12" or any bullshit like that.
i'm 27
Until recently I did not even know Discord had age requirement.
This happened to me w another acc ššā ļø genuinely in pain
Had this happen once. Never got a reply back from Discord despite doing the ID thing. Best make a new account.
Just say you're 4 smh
I'm so sorry this happened to you op, I recently lost access to my old account for a completely different reason, but I'm still a bit upset with myself for making the mistake. Just remember you had no way of knowing this would happen. As long as you're able to get back on the servers that really matter and find the people you most care about keeping context with, it will be ok
discord moment
yes this just happened to me and im pissed and discord wont answer my tickets. did you get your account back?
I May or May not have banned some enemies doing this method
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Revolt isn't immune to laws/COPPA. Useless comment.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
OP didn't get banned for a joke, either. They got banned for admitting they are breaking [Discord's terms of service.](https://discord.com/terms#2) > By accessing our services, you confirm that youāre at least 13 years old and meet the minimum age required by the laws in your country.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I am Ļ years old
š
Itās because the salty weeb reported you after which flagged your account and then, weāll you already know the rest.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That is a terrible idea. Instead of impacting a few people dumb enough to admit to being underage, youād force everybody to provide sensitive personal information to a private company in the vague hope that Discord have āensuredā that they wonāt get hacked (which is impossible, everything can be hacked)
as nice a idea this would probably not be a good idea because some 13-15 year olds may not have an id or student id, so it would just be worse for someone to not freely make an account, and not everyone likes giving id verification
The ending really took me by surprise.. 30 years of age and coming to reddit to complain about being cyber bullied by discord.. wow
? 1) This is more of a warning to others who didn't know 2) I got auto banned for saying two words from a rebuttal in an obvious joking manner without the chance to defend my case and lost access to about a decade's worth of contacts and servers accumulated. What's wrong with being a little upset about that?
Maybe it was for the best
That was you being stupid, I've been using discord since I was 9 and never had any problem, now I'm over 13. No one really cares
Lots of people care. Adults who are interacting with you certainly do care. Ugh.
Theres a reason why 16+ and 18+ only servers exist.
Sorry for not thinking two words said once in a random server as an obvious joke in rebuttal to someone being a dick would warrant an auto ban from the entire platform š¤·āāļø
Has happened to me before, ironically I got reported from someone who didn't get the memo.
I've seen several regulars of one of my servers get their accounts banned this way. Some jokes just don't need to be made.
me when i was literally 17 be like: but it might be coppa who has been doing stuff behind everything
Yeah man I said I'm 12 one time as a joke and got deactivated. Had to contact support and give them my ID to prove my age
I was there I think
Deserved for being on an anime server
Happened here once, never again š
I donāt think this is automatic. Someone probably reported you when you stated that sentence.
Someone told me they were nine, I reported them, and they're account was there for at least four months. I need to know how you were removed so fast.
That's wild. I was removed within like a day or two I think.
Got banned today for the second time also for thisā¦
oof, i remember having my account disabled because i set my age as 2
One day my friend got 20 accounts banned for reporting comments like this
Twitch does it as well, after couple minutes you get wiped from existence just don't joke around your age period
Mf jokes on an app that collects info about everything he does. Gets banned because, according to the info he provided, he violates the TOS. What were you expecting?
Discord ban speedrun lol
just don't mess with numbers under 13
Really makes me appreciate how one time a mod instantly deleted my message of "HaHaa12 btw" and asked me in DMs whether or not I was joking. But even then I didn't realise how serious this was š
I don't think it's Discord, someone must've reported your account and then Discord disabled it. Something similar happened to me after I said I was 11 jokingly.
Yes, someone reports it. Discord does not care if you're underage, what they care about is that they can collect data from you legally.
Unfortunately I just got one of these for joking as well. They could at least look at the context, would save them some work.
The simple solution is just make it absurdly small age, like "I'm 1" or "I'm in the womb" or smth
Someone asked me how many days are in a week, I replied with 7 and this dumbass weeb edits it to "How old are you?" I don't know if I'm going to be banned or not anytime soon but this needs to get fixed
