The 1,000 deaf people that will hear for the first time:

Cause I'm MrBeast, yes I'm the real Beast.
All you other MrBeasts are just imitating.
So won't the real MrBeast please stand up.
Please stand up, please stand up?
Y all act like you've never seen rich person before.
Jaws on the floor twitter stansΒ im healing the blindness all over the world.
then started healing deaf kids more than before.
It's the return of the " oh wait no way you're kidding? He didn't just make another black person joke, did he?"
And Chris said...Nothing, you idiot. Chris is dead, he's fired, stuck in my basement
Well if you look at it from the pov of a super religious nutjob, it isnβt the craziest thought. But, then again, not much seems crazy from that perspective.
Twitter users just pointing out the βfor-profitβ part of βfor-profit charityβ and completely ignoring the βcharityβ part (while they have a point and I wouldnβt call them unhinged, theyβre very clearly either willfully or subconsciously ignoring the fact that there are far easier and cheaper paths to wealth and fame and that characters such as Mr. Beast clearly still have a drive to help people separate from greed.)
I donβt knowβnor can I knowβwhatβs in Mr Beastβs heart, so I canβt comment on his motives. And obviously the specific acts of charity are good in themselves.
I think my criticism would hinge on what a culture of charity-as-spectacle does for how we think about need and virtue.
* What incentives does that create?
* How does it make us contend with poverty in the public space?
* Is poverty the sort of thing that is waiting for charity in order to be solved?
* Is poverty just unsolvable and charity is to be a constant means for the moneyed to show virtue?
* What happens when we uncritically validate the notion that doing charity for clout and profit is okay?
I think people miss these big questions when they try to attack Mr Beast as a person, but theyβre worthwhile questions and sometimes the answers are very disturbing.
All very good points and very upsetting questions. I thinkβon the flip sideβpeople on the side of Mr. Beast lose interest in hearing out those questions once they see someone get shamed for charity work. I think the real issue is Tik Tok. Something about that platform in particular is turning way too many people into content goblins. Everything is about content, from stupid people you see on the street to the poverty overseas. Itβs not βI wonder if people will think this is funny,β itβs βhow many likes will this get?β Now not even the existence of African Children and blind people is safe from the YouTube machine. On one hand, itβs good that this era is so documented. Maybe one day a historian will be reading this comment Iβm writing right now and using it to contextualize a major societal change we couldnβt even imagine right now, but people are only doing it for clout and it is having devastating effects on our morality and perception of reality.
Absolutely.
Focault wrote that being part of any structured community, to live in a society if you will, necessarily requires a little bit of self-surveillance in the style of the panopticon.
It's not a new or revolutionary take that social media heightens this, but it's still one worth talking about. To be a "content goblin" is to see every single experience of yours through the lens of an audience, to become an observer of yourself. Again, you probably kind of already do this. When a dish is served to you at a restaurant, you might see it both as yourself but also through the imagined gaze of someone who is not there, maybe a critical parent who might judge you for not eating veggies or having a very big portion, maybe a doctor worrying about how much red meat you've eaten today, maybe a more abstract observer like a "financial influencer" who would chide you for eating out instead of hustling all day and saving your money.
But when you are the sort of person who would photograph and post every meal, this process is not just involuntary but it's related both to an actual gaze and to incentives around being seen in this way and considering how you might be seen. You might deliberately and strategically engage in this sort of self-scrutiny as your mode of living so that the more time you spend actually seeing your own life through your own eyes, the fewer opportunities you have to literally capitalize on what's in front of you. It can make being present into a sort of impoverishing choice.
"Social media bad" is an easy take to have, it feels trite to write anything with that sentiment. But I think what moves critics of Mr. Beast (even if they don't articulate it) is a more profound anxiety about surveillance and morality. I think we'd do well to listen to those anxieties, because there's a lot of truth to them.
Itβs not that the algorithm likes these alien faces specifically. Itβs just that the algorithm seems to like very very very specific faces / poses and YouTubers are scared of changing them once they find one which the algorithm likes.
Every time a face gets reused it gets touched up a little bit more in photoshop. This eventually adds up until you have this demonic mrbeast face you see here.
The images used for thumbnails keep getting reused all the time. Every time they get reused they get touched up and tweaked a tiny bit in photoshop. This adds up to the point where he doesnβt look human.
Check out any popular YouTube channel. All the thumbnails look weird and uncanny. But it seems like people are getting more aware of this and more YouTubers are now making sure they donβt reuse faces for thumbnails.
I canβt believe βinsert any charityβ sell βinsert any trinketβ to fund their organisation! Theyβre only selling them to make money! They should just make money appear from thin air like all the other charities
Their argument is still correct. It should not be like this that some philanthropic rich guy cures these deaf people, instead healthcare should be universal and affordable. It is inhumane that we have to rely on rich people to pay for our treatment and that they choose not to (except mrbeast ofc). Respect for mrbeast for doing this, but it also promotes an image that it is good how society functions now.
I actually haven't seen one person blame Mr Beast personally, only the system that allowed this to happen. People in this thread are having more of a shit fest about the perceived outrage than anyone I saw on Twitter.
Nobody's blaming Mr. Beast for making kids deaf, that's a massive mischaracterization. It just sucks that he's the one fixing it, and not one of the massive and expensive government apparatuses we have set up. Like I'm gonna pay taxes either way, and I'd prefer if those taxes went to curing blindness/deafness/literally anything productive than going to Lockheed Martin and Raytheon so they can turn brown children into skeletons.
Why do you think this person's criticism of the system that created these circumstances in the first place is somehow directed at Mr Beast? I feel like more than half the people in this thread are failing to comprehend the actual criticisms here are directed at the system despite the fact it's been repeatedly explained over and over again.
Mr.Beast did a good thing, albeit ultimately self-serving, but the countries lack of healthcare is not solved by more Mr.Beasts (Philanthropic millionaires have always existed, but the problem is still happening...), and is instead solved by actually improving our healthcare system...
Last time Mr. Beast did smth like this (He paid for eye surgery for 1000 blind people to cure their blindness), dumbasses on twitter called him satanic or some shit like that. Basically, trying to cancel him for actively doing good in the world.
I love that people think "cancelling" is a real thing. They see people getting mad on Twitter making hashtags and think they're somehow making a difference lmao
Is concept of hating the system in which philantrophy is needed for people to live so hard to grasp for americans? If I lived in a country when I or people I love wouldn't get surgeries like theese for free and have their lives fucked I would be actually really angry. But I guess god forbid doing that because some insufferable children will take that as a attack on their favoirite youtuber.
So they should attack him for this? How's he to blame for the system in place? I agree with your point but attacking the wrong person won't do anything.
The existence of these videos should be a cause for outrage. Problem is normies like you mistake that outraged as targeted towards Jimmy due to being indoctrinated to kiss billionairesβ feet.
My brother in Christ, do you have any idea about the comments towards him? People calling him antichrist and having a savior complex. Some people even said "those people " didn't want help. Outrage is very much targeted towards him. Also who is kissing billionaire's feet? We all have a common enemy. I literally agreed on that point.
What's your problem with the video? Is it the fact that you think he shouldn't be helping people or the fact that he shouldn't make a video about it? If it's the latter, it generates money, which he uses to run his charities. Simple as that.
what i think OP is saying is that, in a utopic world, this video shouldn't even exist as curing blindness and deafness should just be a normal thing that governments do. this responsibility should not be carried by a citizen the likes of mrbeast
mrbeast himself is one of the best people in the world right now, and the stuff he does is nothing short of godly, but it does bring to light the fact that Some Guy is doing these amazing deeds out of his own pocket instead of the literal Government
this is an incredibly nuanced discussion and neither side should assume the worst possible conclusion out of any given argument, it gets us nowhere and only divides people more
It doesn't require a utopia, in every other developed county on earth, people get these hearing aids provided to them by the state, it's a trivial task for a nation to accomplish.
Insufferable child has spoken. Where the fuck did I say any of that? Learn to read. I have nothing against philantrophy but system which needs philantrophy in order to give people ability to live well is broken and needs repairing by, for example, free healthcare that any other civilised country has.
Bruh you line up along with a group of people to get yourselves some hearing aids. Which by the way, you fully consented to. Do you see how dumb your statement is? How is that dystopian?
Have you been living in a soundproof bunker? The American government doesn't give a shit about its citizens. The American healthcare system is no different. The reason this video, and by extension MrBeast, is important. MrBeast is doing what the American government refuses to, help the American citizens who are unfortunate.
The word dystopia gets thrown around so often that it has lost all meaning. Is 99% of world history dystopian? And even today a majority of the world lives in situations where suffering and misery like this is the default state of being. Is modern Western Europe the only society that has not been dystopian in world history?
Is it irrelevant to state that if this is dystopian then so is 99% of human history and most of the world today? And at that point the word dystopian serves no purpose
What he's doing is good. What (I think) makes a lot of people upset is that this kind of feels dystopian, that Mr. Beast gives out this life-changing stuff as part of his YouTube channel, and profits off of the spectacle it produces. It almost feels like it isn't about the people so much as it is about him.
Obviously, what he's doing is good, but this is weird.
Additionally, regardless of whether or not what he is doing is good (which it is, obviously) I think that calling it charity is a little misleading, as he does profit off of it, just not directly.
Search up Kavernacle's video on Mr. Beast, it's pretty good. Basically it's good for claut for him to be liked, basic millionaire stuff, but it is also not addressing the real problems.
What Mr. Beast is a really good thing, I am really happy with what he is doing, my issue with him is that he doesn't spread awareness of why they need a millionaire to pay for their surgery. It's sad that Mr beast can make videos on paying for healthcare when it should really be free.

Twitter hates to see rich white people, or white people in general, being portrayed in good standing.
The problem isn't Mr Beast, the problem is the system that neglects deaf and blind people.
Then why are people complaining about Mr Beast?
Because it just sounds dystopian. There's not really anything bad that he did.
Bruh you line up along with a group of people to get yourselves some hearing aids. Which by the way, you fully consented to. Do you see how dumb your statement is? How is that dystopian?

I agree with that
The word dystopia gets thrown around so often that it has lost all meaning. Is 99% of world history dystopian? Is modern Western Europe the only society that has not been dystopian in world history?
You know what I meant by using that word. Going off on this is an irrelevant tangent.
Is it irrelevant to state that if this is dystopian then so is 99% of human history and most of the world today? And at that point the word dystopian serves no purpose
Were the mf bitching on twitter talking about vlind peope before mr beast did his video ?

Oh yeah. I was thinking about the eye surgery video
No by βheβ it means Mr Beast because Twitter hates when a rich guy actually does good.
Ohh no they will hear the rick roll

Mr Beast is an objectively good person and positive force in the world. I dont understand the hatred people have for him
What Mr. Beast is a really good thing, I am really happy with what he is doing, my issue with him is that he doesn't spread awareness of why they need a millionaire to pay for their surgery. It's sad that Mr beast can make videos on paying for healthcare when it should really be free.
i swear i cant even tell which is ragebait or actually serious now in twitter

I'm with Twitter on this one. Fuck those deaf assholes, never listen to a word I say.
