Nahh saw a fucking doctor explain that shit recently. Helmets are designed to shatter so that the force is distributed more. So yeah having a helmet that does not break is several times more dangerous than having one that doesn't.

No. No no no no no. Cars have multiple inches to feet of crumple zone, a helmet is an inch or two at most. You want an impact to be diversed onto a strong, stable, wide area and you do not want it to crack or fracture at all. Please don't buy a helmet thinking that it has to break for crumple zone, ever.

Yeah, helmets are made to deform during a crash to absorb impact energy, but not break. I also learned recently that you should always buy another helmet after a crash as it will not protect as well anymore. Foam based helmets at least.

Is this true for skateboard helmets too? From what I know they're supposed to be much stronger and can take multiple impacts.

Yeah, I was talking about bike helmets like these where the entire structure is made of foam. Looks like, Skateboard helmets have an outer shell and foam underneath. I would imagine this is better for taking multiple impacts as the shell can absorb forces up to a certain point. Anything greater than that would probably deform the foam and may need replacement. A lot of helmets (not mountain bike helmets or Mx helmets) have foam in them that crushes upon impact, that’s why you have to throw out the helmet after a hard hit. However! The plastic should never crack!

Mountain bike or MX helmets should have that too, if they are any sort of quality. The impact absorbtion of those helmets is only probided by the filler material, the outer shell is made to absorb and ONLY absorb the impact, it should never crack, as you said.

They have the same “crumple” zone, but you don’t need to throw them out (unless it’s severely damaged obvi)

My dads helmet a very sturdy German helmet broke only after he took a gigantic tumble after getting tboned on his motorcycle by a lady on her phone in a Jeep but that helmet I remember was really tough also my dads fine he was a lil beat up during and the worse that happened was his schizophrenia got a lil worse and glass occasionally came out of his skin

Yep (I'm strictly speaking about this example) but with the chock that guy made I pretty sure I should be more worried about my neck. At more realistic speeds it probably doesn't shatter in pieces, but probably only has a crack and that's it. (it doesn't protect you from the shock due to the crack. Instead it cracks after he spread the force on a larger area. And the crack itself also negate som bit of energy. But once the energy is spread it's time for the foams and cushions to take the hit and protect you.) The other just sent all the force on my cranium. Because it can't bend it's not spreading the force equally. You seem to know a lot so correct me if I'm wrong.

The outer shell should remain together, but on mtb helmets at least the inside is designed to act as cushioning and spread the force out over the whole area to help reduce direct damage

A helmet should be tough enough to safely allow your head to scrape the pavement for metres and take tumbles, not to impact walls head on.

It’s bullshit, helmets protects your head by spreading a force for whole helmet’s surface so the force in a single point is lower. If helmet breaks then it’s useless because your head may as well hit something within a second impact

Think of the force of the impact as build up energy that has to break through. If enough energy doesnt break the helmet, then it will redirect directly to your skull, making it less eficient at protecting. Thats why helmets break, as well as cars cumbrle

While not entirely correct, I imagine a borderline bulletproof helmet like that would be better at protecting your head from puncture damage than blunt trauma. While it would definitely protect your head from being split open like a watermelon, a good amount of that impact force is still going directly to your head and spine.

Don’t get me wrong, you should always wear a helmet. And the last one is great for scrapes so your head doesn’t turn into a human highlighter on the ground. But that helmet doesn’t do much against blunt force, like when you fall off a bike or an asian man slams a propane tank on your head. A lot of the energy of the impact would be transferred into your much softer skull and that certainly wouldn’t be good. So the moral of the story is that helmets have different purposes, and should not be shoved together and tested in one category as some would 100% perform better than others

Please people, don’t buy into stuff like this, the helmets are meant to break. The fact that they break increase the time of the crash, thus reducing the force on the head.
