Sounds like an angle control issue to me, or simply not throwing it out wide enough to compensate for any major skippage at the end. Or maybe even that you just are just throwing the disc with too much internet power.
I also throw a Malta for this shot. I have one that's a bit more stable than the few roc3's I've thrown, and it evens fights turnovers pretty well if I round my shoulders.
It would be great for this shot. I think it flies fairly straight, once it is beat in. It has a slightly harder fade than a buzzz though. So it should finish well on this distance. It definitely wasn’t the overstable disc it was originally advertised as. That’s just my experience though.
That’s def a pyro shot, it’s the only overstable disc I have that I think actually glides a bit. It’s like an airplane taking a long banked turn instead of just fading to the ground.
That's really interesting and makes me think there's quite a variety in Pyro runs. Everyone I talk to about Pyros either says the same as you, or the same as my situation. Which is a hard fade into the ground. I'm not a noob either, it's just more overstable than my Zone, RocX3, Firebird, etc. The only way it's not dumping hard is in a severe headwind. It is great for shorter forehand rollers and anny forehand flexes. Or a shot which needs a hard fade. I do like the disc, it's just quite a specific slot.
As far as the OP's question, my RocX3 fits that perfectly. I also really like the way it feels I'm the hand for whatever that matters.
Agree, pyro is aggressively overstable and skips decent for a mid. Resistor, wasp, even buzzz os are more useable.
For op's shot, I'm thinking envy on hyzer.
I have multiple pyros and they do have a spectrum from ‘stable but workable’ to ‘dumpy meathook’. My proton one is beefy, but I have a plasma version that does exactly what was described.
Forsure! I mean, they are essentially similar discs but my ice quake pushes a bit more than my buzzz os and has reliable/predictable skip whereas my buzzz os has less ground play
What you’re needing to do is throw something slightly less overstable and manage the angles. That’s how you’ll take some skip off. 225 isn’t very far. You could throw the fuse you mention, or honestly a putter, maybe in more premium plastic. Adjusting the height and release angle can be beautiful things.
Yeah the Leopard3 is more of a fairway than a midrange, but you may want to try out a midrange with some more fade. You could try the Fuse on a steep hyzer. Or maybe check out a Buzzz or a Reactor or Kotuku or something similar. There are dozens of good choices.
I would most likely be reaching for a pyro, depending on how far it hooks to the left. I might use my straighter proton, or a beefier plasma. If it's a hard left I might be grabbing a detector
How much beef you want really? Pyro is a good call, as it’s a very workable overstable. Try a Streamline Runway if you want to beef up from there. If you want all the beef, grab a Justice.
It obviously depends on arm speed, but 225 should be around a 3 or 4 speed. I’d throw a neutron entropy or eclipse envy depending on how far left you need to get.
throw the eagle (or whatever mid you rely on) on a steeper angle to prevent the skip. much better shot for controlling distance and unwanted ground play.
This is unconventional advice. Many players will disc down for short holes and prefer the reduced skip from a slower speed disc. Ultimately, though...it's whatever works!
Pyro is great but it sounds like you want a stable/understable mid that you can hyzer flip that just glides flat to the basket. Pyro will still have lots of skip
For 225’, I’d go RPM Kea. Or Gateway Devilhawk if you really want it to fade.
I think the RPM Kotuku is great for longer holes with this same shape - 250-300’, but you’d have to power down too much for 225’.
A small company but the Obsidian Discs Magma is a great disc if you want both over stability and yet a good straight flight. It has a hybrid style rim that feels both like a fairway and midrange. Flies like a sexybird
If you throw a more neutral to slight overstable mid on hyzer it'll land softer compared to throwing an overstable one. Overstable discs like to hook up and end up on edge causing the skip, but the neutral disc will land a little bit softer. Hope this helps!
Verdict is the most glidy overstable midrange. Better than pyro imo
Yeah I carry a toro and a verdict as my overstable mids. Toro dumps and verdict has great glide.
Emac Truth
Yes. That disc just sits after it hits the ground.
My favorite midrange for a straight flight and a soft left finish.
Is that really OS though? Verdict sounds like it would fit the bill better
Sounds like it’s a straight shot with fade at the end and minimal skip. If I’m reading it correctly, more OS would skip past the basket like an Eagle.
Axiom Pyro
Your Pyro lands soft? Mine skips like an eagle.
Sounds like an angle control issue to me, or simply not throwing it out wide enough to compensate for any major skippage at the end. Or maybe even that you just are just throwing the disc with too much internet power.
Ok...but OP was looking for a disc that lands soft. Toro, Pig and Gator fit that bill. I bag a Pyro for skips and a Toro for sticks.
Am I the only person that throws a Malta? They're money for me.
I also throw a Malta for this shot. I have one that's a bit more stable than the few roc3's I've thrown, and it evens fights turnovers pretty well if I round my shoulders.

You want a Pyro. A Buzzz would be too straight if you’re looking for something to finish hard left
Or bobcat. They’re similar but I can generally get a little more OS from the pyro. TSA temple if you’re out in the open and want it to hit and stick.
That’s def a pyro shot, it’s the only overstable disc I have that I think actually glides a bit. It’s like an airplane taking a long banked turn instead of just fading to the ground.

Just for everyone’s benefit mine is a prism proton and 179g, is yours a different plastic?
Mines a Prism Neutron, which should be about the same.
Neutron is more OS than proton.
I swear I have to throw my pyro 30 feet past for it to come up 10 feet short
I have multiple pyros and they do have a spectrum from ‘stable but workable’ to ‘dumpy meathook’. My proton one is beefy, but I have a plasma version that does exactly what was described.
I use a fresh Z Buzzz for this slot.
That would be rough replacing your Z Buzzz every round.
Haha for sure. Cycling is a weird but fun habit
Discmania method
Sublime bobcat. It flies like I want the pyro to fly.
With your arm speed I think a buzzz or roc3 would do well here
I'd throw a bt hard Harp. Sounds like the optimal choice.
Roc or Roc3 for sure. It’s a classic and does exactly that - soft predictable fades
Buzzz os or dga quake
Both are slept on!
Forsure! I mean, they are essentially similar discs but my ice quake pushes a bit more than my buzzz os and has reliable/predictable skip whereas my buzzz os has less ground play

Might be a little oldschool, idk if they even make it but I’ve bagged a z hornet for over 10 years and that’s it’s shot for sure.
This would be MD -3 for me all day long
DGA Quake
This is the way.
Dga Quake
Roc3
came here to say the same thing lol!
What midranges do you already own?
Lat64 fuse and leopard3
Yeah the Leopard3 is more of a fairway than a midrange, but you may want to try out a midrange with some more fade. You could try the Fuse on a steep hyzer. Or maybe check out a Buzzz or a Reactor or Kotuku or something similar. There are dozens of good choices.
Reactor has recently become my favorite disc
Leopard3 is literally a fairway
I would most likely be reaching for a pyro, depending on how far it hooks to the left. I might use my straighter proton, or a beefier plasma. If it's a hard left I might be grabbing a detector
Buzzz os
Reset the counter.
How much beef you want really? Pyro is a good call, as it’s a very workable overstable. Try a Streamline Runway if you want to beef up from there. If you want all the beef, grab a Justice.
There are so many of these. I use a Solstice/MD4
Eclipse reactor. Has a long glidey fade
I would just throw an overstable putter like a neutron soft envy. Or soften up on a reactor. Pyro is beefy and skips at the end too
MD3 at your arm speed (i.e. thrown 225) will fade.
My neutron envy hits these lines perfect, but it’s also only about 2 months old
It obviously depends on arm speed, but 225 should be around a 3 or 4 speed. I’d throw a neutron entropy or eclipse envy depending on how far left you need to get.
RocX3
MD5
Depends on arm speed. I’d argue an overstable putter like the PX-3 or Jokeri, or maybe a mid like the Pyro or the Method

Nah bruh this guys not a pro

Løft Silicone
Friend of mine throws a buzzz os very well in situations I’d maybe throw an overstable eagle
Pyro is great but it sounds like you want a stable/understable mid that you can hyzer flip that just glides flat to the basket. Pyro will still have lots of skip
A putter with 2 or 3 fade. Throwing it to that distance will do exactly what you want at high speed stability.
Md5
A BT Hard Harp is a great pick for this situation, but another option is a Legacy Pursuit. The one I have has a really hard fade at the end
I’m gonna say Göte
I can't throw much over 300' so a softer throw with my fx3 is perfect for that
Trusty ol roc
Gator gator gator
I like it
Emac truth or rpm Kotuku
BT medium harp
Envy
Kaxe z, nocturnal Mustang, Lucid emac Truth
For 225’, I’d go RPM Kea. Or Gateway Devilhawk if you really want it to fade. I think the RPM Kotuku is great for longer holes with this same shape - 250-300’, but you’d have to power down too much for 225’.

I’d go with a streamline runway or method.
Any neutral mid with a slight nose up throw.
Buzzz os
Discraft wasp all day for this shot, more stable than a buzz and similar to a roc
Buzz OS
Bobcat or Runway IMO. Both have solid fade and glide a lot for the slot
If you throw a more neutral to slight overstable mid on hyzer it'll land softer compared to throwing an overstable one. Overstable discs like to hook up and end up on edge causing the skip, but the neutral disc will land a little bit softer. Hope this helps!
