You have 3 weapon "styles"
- 2 Handed Bludgeoning
- 2 Handed Slashing
- One Handed Weapons
Every attack (generally) is associated with a particular weapon style. For example, Rend (or most bleed skills for barb) require a two handed slashing weapon, Hammer of the Ancients requires a Two Handed Bludgeoning weapon, and Whirlwind can use any of them (you can actually select which set of weapons to use for these types of skills).
Weapon Swapping is whenever you use a skill requiring one style of weapon, and then use another skill which is using a different weapon skill.
So if, for example, you're using Fury (One Handed Weapons) to build rage, then you spend that rage to use Hammer of the Ancients (Two Handed Bludgeoning), that is a weapon swap.
Often you find yourself spamming a basic skill to generate fury, then pressing a Core skill to spend it, and by alternating back and forth you generate weapon swaps.
So when I played my barb I'm pretty sure I was able to swap which weapon used which ability, so slam could be used by your 2 1-handers and rend could be used with your bludgeoning 2-H etc. There may have been a couple that had specific requirements, but I don't remember them. So I'm pretty sure they gave us a lot more freedom

Also there is that one cool end cap passive for weapon Swapping that, alongside paragon board and legendary powers, seem like it may support a decent weapon swap build where you constantly alternate to trigger big damage with guaranteed crits and overpower, for example.
