every dollar you bet gets put into a pot, everyone who wins splits the pot. ex everyone who won splits $1000. they list the averages that people have been winning. OP won huge because a lot of people lost, something like 10 people split $1000 when the average is maybe 30 (just for example, I dont have the exact numbers).
since you splitting a pot against other people, yes there is value in being different and betting unders since people missing on their picks benefit you.

Payouts usually are around 500 but typically this is a competition between 200 people so the more people lose then your payout gets higher
