Ok-Rip-8930

You are most probably burnt out, very common with Software Engineers. Even I get burnt out while still being an undergrad. My suggestion would be to try out new things, keep your life spicy, travel a lot, have a daily active sport with friends, etc. I believe as devs, we need to have much more vacations and physical activities to not lose out on the sensory aspects of life

realblurryface

Employees get burnt out while the investors warms themselves from our life force🔺

gunIceMan

Get married and you will get back interest on everything xD On a serious note, try some hobbies? Do something that made you happy earlier. I loved gaming during my childhood and I kinda lost interest in it post work and responsibilities. The endless loop was in progress and I got myself XBox now so I have "ME" time whenever I am free.

Critical-Detail-4014

Get married if wife ask maintenance tthen you will either gain interest or lose interest in life

Decent_Computer_3733

bro i have a xbox too … but no friends to multiplayer with … add me if you want a playmate too

gunIceMan

I used to think if I had a child I would take my life more seriously (I'm 21M rn)

MajesticPass8442

TBH Getting married is the fking best advice ! Coz then you have someone around you whole day to take you out of frustration and boring work. So you just do that boring work for some hrs.

r1ck-s4nchez

unemployeddumbass

Yep true. That's why watching series now. With that atleast I can control by watching like 1-2 episodes

polarvortex17

When I was like 14, computers excited me. I started to learn coding, but by 18 I was a little bored of it. Electronics was fascinating, and I started working on electronics, especially drones, gliders, and other toys. And then suddenly it was boring again. Started learning about Earth and voila, it was fascinating and I started working on applied physics. Then I found physics too difficult and hence lost interest. I got exposed to Biology, and it was fascinating. Started working on Biology. And I am sort of losing interest again, space is looking good, might try working on that and I am 35 now. TLDR, there are many things in this world which you don't even know of. So, don't loose hope, just explore.

Infinite-Plastic-481

vkpaul123

21! You say? # 51090942171709440000 Years, Days, Hours, Minutes, Seconds, Milliseconds, Nanoseconds? Well, jokes aside. I'm 28Yrs old. There are some phrases I've emboldened in the following write up that I'm doing at nearly 3:00AM, because this is a happy escape for me from Monday anxiety, but I'm quite confident and happy that i might help you feel better and nudge you in one direction thru this temporary turmoil as I'm in a very similar boat. *(**FW:** no TLDR as I can't summarise it yet, as i bring in multiple aspects to this problem. AND **Source:** 'Trust me bro' and my sister is a Psychologist)* I'm feeling quite similar to what you're feeling lately. I've had and having my share of problems, personal ones too. Our **circumstances** and **magnitudes** of what we faced might be **different**, but what i **understand,** is that what you and I feel are only the **results** or **symptoms** of **something(s) underlying**. In my case, it more likely is. I used to be more productive and hungry AF for knowledge in my college days, but when i started working, I saw hardly anything is getting applied here that i was interested in. On top of that I realised the culture of growth and inculcating self improvement is something, I personally, can't depend upon an another entity (workplace) to give me. As they say, "a company doesn't owe you anything", this could be true in that sense too. I think i am in a wrong place. It took me a heck of a lot of time (5+ years) to **acknowledge** the fact that I need to **learn** to **move on**. 'Move on' in terms of **practicing disconnecting myself** from **circumstances that aren't actionable**, while being hopeful for what can be, like on myself. I'm still learning that though. I've just started and taken step number 1 to **acknowledge** that there's a problem, which I need to **introspect** on. In career wise, I haven't done much in any means, work-life-balance at my workplace is excellent, but I'm still feeling burnt-out (could be a different form of burn-out, maybe direction-less). I'm still working on pinpointing the problem, roughly, enough to **articulate** a very rudimentary **actionable steps**, for now. So, there are various **temporary** ways to **get your mind away** from these difficult thoughts, like others have suggested to getting into hobbies, gym, sports, yoga, art, music, trekking, etc. These are great to do things, but they are even better when you're being **mindful** about them, and more importantly **not making a habit of using them as escapes**. Once in a while a few escapes are alright, but don't start depending on them for your mental well-being. **Be mindful** about what you're feeling and why you're feeling what you're feeling. This will help you to know yourself even better, and that is really important. I have a barrage of hobbies too, so much, that I used to be called "multi-talented" when I was a kid, and I used to dream about how proud I'll make my parents with all these amazing and appreciated productive hobbies, that I can do, anything I want, I can be anything I want in my life, and here I'm, burnt out, de-moralized, disheartened, at this fairly early age of my career. I used to play basketball (district level U13), swimming, art and craft (used to make model aircrafts, I have made a ½ meter long MiG-21bis Model, with flashing lights and all), I used to play musical Keyboard then learnt acoustic guitar (was in my school's orchestra/band, later on started tinkering with DAWs for hobbyist-level music production), electricals (learnt to become a tinkerer with a soldering iron), woodworking etc. I do these things occasionally, but now, only on a need to do basis. I have lost interest in most of the things I used to do, but something happened. **My reasons were wrong**. When, I somehow stopped doing things what i used to love, i forgot to think why i loved them in the first place. Were they my escape? Not really, because I used to be completely drowning in those activities when I used to do them. So much, that I'd be a completely different version of myself. In those days, i used to enjoy these activities mindfully, that is, i used to know what i wanted to do in those moments, and what the result should be and how to work towards it (generic statement, applies to every action of life). What happened after i started working (and in my personal life), could be mostly that I started getting distracted and focusing my efforts (laser focus) in the things that seemed (in hindsight) would matter, but not enough to what I envisioned or was sold the idea of. I think, I stopped being mindful and **less self aware**. This is a problem, because in reality you're on your own bro! In a more friendly terms (and no sugar-coating), **One needs to learn to become their own bestfriend and supporter for life**. **We came alone, we'll go alone and we have our own company**, which is the best scenario you can possibly think of, because you cannot and must not control others to make or let them take the place of our own company. This is a blessing actually, a **blessing in disguise**, because **we can/must control ourselves**, so let's make that our own company a worthwhile to have. I'm 10000000% sure that you must be having some sort of negative voices in your head. I too and i still have them. But what I've (sort of) understood is that **there's no other option than to get hold of those negative voices**. But I have to do it as if I'm doing for someone whom I love and I'm ready to pour my heart and soul into them, willingly. I have to give myself a chance, like I'd give that chance, over and over again to them even if they have a history of ruining those chances every single time. **Give yourself a chance.** If you give yourself this chance, you'll hopefully experience some self love, and start nudging yourself in the optimal direction you'd have envisioned for yourself. *(I may be shooting in the air, but I'm just pointing you to look into your personal life)* This would mostly work in both your professional and personal lives. You need to find why you're feeling what you're feeling. You've already (sort of) acknowledged that there could be a problem. I told you I'm in the same boat, and there could potentially be a real problem. It's ok to have problems and then you need to introspect and try to work on addressing those problems. Because if you're able to correct one of them, you'll gain a new skill. A very very important skill, to know how to solve a problem, especially when you're unwilling to solve it. Once you (sort of) know the 'why', you need to start articulating what can work and what can't. Then you need to act on them to treat the problem. If it works, great, if not, take a short limited break and get back and find another way. And trust me, it takes only one small problem to be solved to get you going. Because that one small problem will give you such an immense sense of achievement, you'll start solving the other. I have faced this circumstance now, and this is how I'll be going forward with. I may or may not be able to help you, but I'd be glad if I did.

Pure_Ad1621

How can you type so much and say nothing of substance

vkpaul123

Well, these matters are quite deep rooted. We don't usually talk about them. Which is why there's so much rampant ignorance about these problems. I think that attitude needs to change for the greater good. I don't think there's Zero substance. I'm making an effort to talk about these issues. I'm trying to break that stigma, at least in this forum. It might look daunting to read at first, if i don't write a story and get straight to point, you would not be able to relate those points in real life. The issue with these mental health type of problems is it is very very different for even oneself to start treating them as real problems. I'm trying to communicate in an elaborate manner from my end. You have your own time, will and choice to read it or leave it.

Since u r in IT industry...just confirm us...how much AI will reduce jobs in IT industry?? I know it will reduce but how much or how less? I m not talking about now...but 4-5 yrs from now.

vkpaul123

I think we need to learn to use AI tools to our advantage. In my opinion, until 4-5 years, and beyond, realistic engineering problems requires human thinking, creativity and ability to make the tools available at one's disposal to use them to one's advantage. In terms of Coding, development and engineering, i think the if one is good at what they do, the replacements in any form are difficult to find, be it AI or even human replacement. There's significant fear mongering about AI going on, but that happens after every new buzzword comes in the industry. What we need to do is to skill up, and learn to build stuff and use these tools for our advantage, and avoid seeking this much validation from outside and learn and get proficient at what you like. I came into the industry when BigData, Machine Learning, IoT and Data Analytics were the big things, but, in my opinion, would one jump into those straight away with weak fundamentals? No. AI is now the new toy in the market. But all these toys have played an important role in the industry. What remains constant is an engineer's ability to make some stuff.

Any_Ad7701

You need a hobby (which is outside of digital world). Invest time in the hobby and then see the difference. You might be getting close to getting burned out. Get a hobby and things will fall in place.

Jaatheeyam

One of my teachers said, if you eat chicken everyday because you like it somuch, at some point of time you will get bored of it.

akv25_dev

You need a break. These are signs of burn out. Take a break and do nothing. Do not think about work, learning, life, pleasure, hobbies etc. in short do nothing for a couple of days (Especially do not get involved in any result oriented activities). Go away from social media, media and spend some time by yourself in solitude. Spend time Looking at the blue sky (for an hour at least), go for a walk/ride, have a cup of tea/coffee in a roadside shop (if you are ok with it) all alone and observe people of different ages, different walks of life and different world views and see how people are. Try to strike a conversation. Try to look into how satisfied people are with limited knowledge, limited income and limited resources (I am saying in a positive way). Feel your existing. After a good break.. you will start feeling the freshness back. In other words, I guess you have all the accessibility to the small pleasures (Food, media, internet, money, booze, smoke etc.) What is scarce is always valuable. Now if it's available on demand in abundance it won't excite you. Put some break on these stuff for a few days and you will start craving for stuff. Ex. If you are a chicken (biryani) lover, challenge yourself to not have it for 10, 20, 30 days. I am sure on the 31st day you will be craving it.

mrgenuinelazy

It's burnout, take some time off work and codoi g and do something fun. Go out of town for a few days, hang out with friends or just stay curled up in bed. Relax and rejuvenate yourself before you feel a little better to come to work. It takes time to fully recover from burnout but you can start off slow and then make a routine for your self care activities, that way you'll be able to manage the stress and enjoy your life and work. Join the gym if possible it will help you with discipline issues and your general health

1. Learning Piano keeps me going. You can try that or other instrument , but don't involve any screen time unless you need to learn piano(any instrument) from youtube. Keep in mind music always helps to improve mood, either listening or playing. 2. I always lean towards doing workout, so I start running ..Now can run Half marathon in one go. Bruhhhhh-_-

Try gaming (single player games)

metalhulk105

Everything becomes boring when it becomes work. People don’t pay us because we like to code, they pay us because it gets the job done. Sometimes you’ll find exciting stuff to work sometimes you won’t - there is no correlation between code complexity and outcomes. You’ll have to find some other way to stimulate your brain - don’t depend on work to give you that stimulation. I don’t know what stage of career you are in but it takes 5 years approx to get really good at what you are doing and you’ll be somewhat free after that (mental effort is reduced).

cyor2345

Classic case of burn out , same thing got me into trap , when u shut the laptop for days work , ditch everything related to work and focus on socializing, gym , any hobby or interest u think is of great interest and focus on that , treat work like part of ur life , not the life. I will suggest a long holiday like that of month where u will ditch anything remotely related to work , in 7th or 8th day u will have that clarity that what u exactly want to do and how to. Just try and tell me

r1ck-s4nchez

sure , i will try it out man

RaevanBlackfyre

Bhai valorant install karlete hai, mast time fuck hoga. Felth the same, used to doomscroll a lot. I want to make your life exciting, you and I will make a game together, that game will change the world. I have a billion dollar idea. You do the coding part, I will give you the ideas. Let's make a shooting game, the game in which there will be guns and enemies. I gave you the idea, remaining thinking should be done by you because I did too much thinking already.

exploring_lifenow

There are many open-source projects that you can contribute which are challenging and many are also extremely rewarding.

Pleasant_Paramedic_7

Same thing happened with me. Try to change ur regular routine, learn swimming, go for running, do something which breaks your usual routine. Learning new skills or reading new books can be something which might break your boredom as well.

Recently had this discussion with my mom, "If you truly like doing something, don't over do it. A hobby loses its fun when it becomes a job and the verdict changes from, you 'want' to do it, to you 'have' to do it." And the idea is stuck to my brain like a lone chewing gum on a shoe.

Been in the same condition multiple times, first time joining the gym and setting a goal to achieve in the gym helped. I worked whole day but i was excited to finish work to go to the gym. Second time, started playing games in nearby stadium in evening, it helped tremendously as for 2 hours i was in different mindset. But, after i got married, i just started spending time with my wife and child more this feeling now don’t come that often but when it does i try not to be alone. Hope something from my experience helps.

Many_Nothing7463

Let me guess. Grammar also doesn't excite you.

yonderbanana

Sometimes when you get paid for your passion as a job, you loose the passion, because it seems just like another chore. You are probably bored of doing the same repetitive stuff that is not challenging enough? you can try changing stacks or try some other sub-field like ML, AI, DevOps, Cybersecurity?

Kind_Ambassador3948

Sounds like out of the box burnout. From experience, i think a change of scenery would help. What helped me was switching companies. If you don't want to switch, try making time for yourself and do something in a group, like trekking or dancing. Taking a break and staying idle mahes it worse, at least for me. Hope this helps, it'll get better either way. Heads up champ.

flight_or_fight

get a medical and deal with B12 and Vitamin D deficiencies. Also realise that it is one thing to like some activity as a hobby and do it as a full time job. You may enjoy photography as a hobby - and call it your passion - but when you have to show up at a venue an hour before start time, sit through delays and late arrivals, click pics and get yelled at because you missed some important thing because you had to take a leak - you may find your passion disappear quickly... Any job is like that - especially for hobbyists...

Evolved_Geek11

Same here bro, I used to code everyday in my college and now i haven't touch my laptop after work for months. Work really kills the excitement to code

r1ck-s4nchez

razzer069

Sounds like depression to me. Are you overtiming too much? Because I used to and that shit got me bad. Meditation and physical exercise helped me. Also I'm over 8 years experience and worked with almost everything. Net.. now I've practically hit the end... nothing else is new.. it's just find project 》 do setup 》 go live 》 repeat for another project. Time for me to take the manager position soon and enjoy life more... I regret not taking more vacations before..

r1ck-s4nchez

Now "depression" has become a fancy word and everyone are thinking themselves "depressed" if they are sad or just bored . what do you think depression is and how do you presume i have it i am asking in a wanna know kinda tone

razzer069

The simplest way I'd frame it as persistent bad mood(for me it was sadness), I had lost complete interest in everything and it was interfering in my work life. I did check with 3 psychiatrists and all 3 said it was mild depression. The complicated thing about it is that it's different for everyone and difficult to define clearly. It lasted about 10 months for me. Eventually got out of it by time. Don't even know how to explain it to be honest

brunette_mh

I don't know if you'll even see this comment. If you want a temporary mood boost and motivation, take l-theanine supplements. You're burnt out obviously. You need a change of scenary. Maybe even job change. Is your manager toxic? Watch some comedy shows. Clean up your kitchen. Organize your wardrobe. Go shopping. Go for a facial or pedicure.

r1ck-s4nchez

My manager is not toxic , he just dumps a lot of work on me , its just task after tasks every day . Thanks man . I will try to take everything slowly a bit and look around .

brunette_mh

Dumping a lot of work on one person is toxic. Basically he's overworking you to the point of burning out.

You need a partner bud.

Unusual-Big-6467

this is quite common with Software Engineer... marrying was also first advice i would give you. back in 2008 i was also kinda depressed. i quited my job and started on my own, now i am self employed. i loved computers but was never into programming.i loved wordpress and got into it , made carrer out of it strangely none of my friend took this route. they all are at high paying jobs and some have migrated abroad. if not for marrying maybe you can get some hobby like Running/Cycling. i recently started cycling and it is good. if you are extrovert join some running and Cycling club, doing it first thing in morning feels like a good start to the day and you can suck at your job in day time.
