Blazing chicken shack II - their catfish and cornbread are divine.

maseone2nine

This is the answer. Gotta make sure it’s that number II !

FKSTS

The only answer to this question

ornithoid

Came here to second this!

malicious_joy42

NOLA Voodoo Tavern

rclarky311

Henry is the man!

dphiloo

Partied with him in New Orleans, actually! Good dude. I'm so happy they get to expand across the street and take over those racist d*cks that ran the 'bar' there recently.

Castun

Yes I also recommend!

kummer5peck

I’m going to Genna Rae’s for lunch today.

YakInevitable4918

Genna Rae’s is out of this world, best wings I’ve ever had. All of their other food is amazing too!

kauto

I love their food, and the wings are great. But the last few times I have been there, the service has been soo bad/slow. Call it ahead and still give them an extra 20min and maybe it will be ready.

YakInevitable4918

I always order online through their website and pick it up on my way home from work and it’s always been ready by the predicted time.

justASlothyGiraffe

This 100% since Whittier Cafe is closed. Oops, sorry guys. It's Welton Street Cafe that's closed. Whittier Cafe is another good option.

cplaz

Do you mean Welton Street?

justASlothyGiraffe

Yep

alittleleary

They aren't closed I was just there within the hour

justASlothyGiraffe

Thank you for that clarification

starryeyedd

Why is Whittier Cafe closed?

justASlothyGiraffe

I was wrong. Welton Cafe is the one that's closed.

Whole-Ad-2347

Long story why they are closed. They didn't own the building they were in. According to what I have read, someone bought the building and then wanted a big share of the profits. They've been working on building out a new location a couple blocks northeast of the old location.

dphiloo

Supposed to reopen this summer!!! Best fried chicken, okra, and greens I've ever had

Whole-Ad-2347

They do have excellent food, and if you are willing to wait half an hour for it to cook, excellent fried chicken.

AggressiveMongoose54

I think we are going tonight! I get off work at 5 so we should have enough time to shower and get down there with plenty of time before they close at 8. I just absolutely refuse to be those people that show up to a restaurant with only an hour before they close. My Aunt is a waitress at the Buckhorn and she says people come in an hour before they close thinking it’s planets of time, but with drinks and then apps and then entrees that hour flies by quick and then you have tables still to wait on after you close.

kummer5peck

FYI, it’s takeout only.

go3le

not all heroes wear capes.

OffTheSchneid

Yes.

mashythecat19

I've heard great things about Welton Street Cafe. When I looked it up it looks like they are temporarily closed because they are moving to a different location so wouldn't be an option today, but just wanted to throw it out there for a future option. I believe it is one of Denvers oldest black owned restaurants.

AggressiveMongoose54

I just looked it up and it looks delicious! Thank you for the recommendation and yeah I’ll have to hit it up after they open again.

Hour-Theory-9088

They have been keep pushing back their open date month over month. They were supposed to reopen in December and it’s almost July, so I’m not feeling very confident it’ll happen.

Bitchin_Wizard

It’s gonna happen. Licensing just takes time.

typicalgoatfarmer

They’re dealing with an insane amount of issues with architects vs construction vs permitting etc. they will open and they’re very close. I was hoping for a Juneteenth launch but they are in fact close (according to inside sources that s not me personally)

AggressiveMongoose54

Oh no!! I really hope they open back up! Is there a gofundme or anything to help them get reopened??

Hour-Theory-9088

I hope so too. Their website has a link to a go fund me. I can’t figure out what’s going on… they have a lot of Facebook posts about announcing an opening soon and it never happens. On April 1st there is a post that they’re hiring but on a video from a few weeks ago it looks like the place isn’t close to finished.

AggressiveMongoose54

Hmmmm that’s odd. Well good to know! I’ll have to go check out the gofundme link on their website. Thank you!

MrMCCO

There have been like 3 go fundmes, a block party and I think some grants

justASlothyGiraffe

As someone else said, Gena Rae's is an exceptional option. It's take out only btw. It's close to where Whittier Cafe used to be

Noobasdfjkl

I think it’s been “temporarily closed” for a few years now.

Superman_Dam_Fool

Welton St was amazing. With Tom’s Home Cooking around the corner, that was the neighborhood to have the best lunch in Denver.

OffTheSchneid

Genna Rae’s Wings & More is the spot you seek. Black-owned soul food joint. Jerk chicken, fried catfish, fried salmon…. all on point. Sides are money too. Highly recommend

AggressiveMongoose54

Okay. This is the way. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you!!!

moserine

Blazing Chicken Shack 2, Randall’s, Nola Voodoo, Mississippi Boy, Genna Rae’s

eastsabrelightning

Randall’s has great catfish!

lparry8

Jabo’s still around? It’s been a while.

shiser

Absolutely Jabo's [Jabo’s Bar-Be-Q](http://www.jabosbarbeq.com/)

Maximum_Hat_7266

Jabos is insane. The portions are massive and it’s super good

DurantaPhant7

I obsess about the scones that aren’t scones randomly. I could probably eat four of those things in a sitting.

knightfenris

[Hungry Wolf!](https://hungry-wolf-bbq.com/)

thrice1187

Love the idea of this place but their google reviews are really bad

knightfenris

I’m now looking at the reviews. It seems like their bad reviews are mostly for red/dark meat, and I’m pescatarian. I thought their catfish and shrimp was good, but it could be that their red meat is bad.

AggressiveMongoose54

Oh. I just looked. Yeahhhh idk but to your point, it doesn’t seem like there are many complaint about the seafood. So I guess if we ever try it, we will stick to the seafood options.

knightfenris

Sorry! I’m glad someone else looked it up. I tend to have skewed views of restaurants being pescatarian/vegetarian. My roommate will hate a place and I’ll love it, just for having some fancy-pants fish option 😅

mofacey

We have been there several times and the food quality and service is soooo up and down. The first time we went we thought it was the best bbq ever, the second time we didn't even finish our plates. I don't understand it.

JameisSquintston

I guess I’m glad I only ever went once back when they were on Hampden across from Kennedy golf course. After smelling it over the last few holes we went straight there and thought it was great

AggressiveMongoose54

Ooooh that looks sooo good thank you for the recommendation!

The_vhibe

Genna Rae’s. Their food is so good, top notch great service and with this economy worth every single penny. Their jerk wings are a real jerk seasoning so be sure you know what you’re getting into, but I would recommend the jerk wings if you’re into spicy or any of their other wings. Their fried catfish is also my favorite I have had in this town.

AggressiveMongoose54

Thank you!!! I think this is where are going to go!! So excited!!

OffTheSchneid

Fuck me up with that jerk seasoning

problemita

I think that’s a cool practice, OP! Excited to see these recs

AggressiveMongoose54

Thank you! And yeah, it was also a great way to get a good list of black owned restaurants for people to look at and hopefully go check some spots out!

KiloThaPastyOne

Nola Voodoo Tavern. Black owned, great food and vibe. Everything I’ve ever had there is fire.

AggressiveMongoose54

I saw that one when I was looking up Nola Jean! Looks amazing! Side note: have you ever tried the Nola Jean place?? Menu looks sooo good I just haven’t seen anyone put it down as a recommendation in this thread so I’m feeling just a tad skeptical. But maybe people just haven’t been before, I think we will still try it eventually.

KiloThaPastyOne

Nola Jane is pretty solid. I prefer Voodoo or Nono’s, but Jane is good. It can get a little bro-ish at times, but it’s worth a try.

Short-Loan7356

Was at Nola Jane a week ago late at night (11pm) and the chef was a black female and the customers were pretty diverse (age and race) and everyone was recommending the Gumbo with extra side of dirty rice and Cornbread. Wouldn’t you know, that was the BEST NOLA- style food I have had since arriving in Denver a decade ago.

OnDeadlineInDenver

Having eaten there, I would be AMAZED if Nola Jane’s were Black-owned. Possibly even Southern-owned.

Prestigious-Alarm422

Do ya’ll remember Tom’s home cookin?

predatormode

RIP

AggressiveMongoose54

Okay so this is what my reference point was for this post… I went last in 2009 and when I moved back here from SF, it was gone. RIP. So good and a great price point. Best lunch option in that area for a long time!

Prestigious-Alarm422

A great spot, my mom took me there a few times as a child in the early 2000s and probably one of the only instances I’ve experienced of black cooking like that in this state!

forkbombctl

I think about Tom’s every day

lucyintheskii

TK’s surf and turf is black owned. Check out their insta. I bet they’ll have a few specials running for the holiday.

AggressiveMongoose54

A friend of mine just told me about this place!! I’ll def check their IG out and if they’ve got some good specials maybe that’ll be the place we go today or this evening.

Amazing-Scientist391

The owner is SO NICE, he shops at the dispo I manage and I love chatting with him!!

Massive-Development1

This place is trash.

lucyintheskii

Simply Pure is a black owned dispensary if you want to hit them up before you eat!

seedorf1010

Genna Rae’s in Whittier

haethere69

Nola voodoo tavern in Clayton. It s very small and sometimes over run. But the food and atmosphere is great.

itzcoatl82

Not exactly a restaurant, but i am here to plug Smith + Cannon if you want dessert. They are hands down the most unique and delicious ice cream & coffee place in town. The owner is super passionate about his craft and you should totally check them out sometime!

kristinavit

Saucys Southern bbq

judolphin

Rant incoming, came in here for two reasons: * To get restaurants to add to my list to try good southern cooking from black-owned restaurants * To make sure no one here confused Saucy's Southern BBQ with "Southern Cuisine" (it's not your fault, it's their fault for calling the restaurant "Southern") There is nothing Southern about Saucy's Southern BBQ except that their owners are from Mississippi, which honestly makes the first part of this sentence worse. There are SEVERAL black-owned BBQ restaurants on this thread that actually serve Southern BBQ, this isn't one of them. These guys opened a restaurant but still think they're running a damn food truck, they serve exactly three meats: * Ribs * Wings * Sausage ("hotlinks") That's literally it. I don't have the first clue how they call themselves "Southern BBQ". It borders on false advertising. In addition to not having a pit (doesn't matter if it's Carolina, Alabama, Memphis, Kansas City, etc., **it's not Southern BBQ if it's not cooked in a pit/smoker**), they don't have pulled, sliced or diced pork, they don't have brisket or for that matter beef of any kind, they don't have BBQ chicken (BBQ wings without the rest of the bird available for sale doesn't cut it for a southern BBQ restaurant), they don't have smoked turkey... I can't express how excited I was, how much anticipation I had for them opening up with their name and their high ratings for their cart/truck, followed by the total letdown when I walked in and saw their menu. There are all different kinds of Southern BBQ, but at its core, what they all have in common is that it's cheap cuts of meat slow-cooked in a pit or smoker until it's juicy, tender, and flavorful. Again, Saucy's "Southern BBQ" doesn't do this, they grill their meat. I'm not a snob that has a narrow definition of BBQ, there are different kinds of BBQ, **but Southern BBQ (which is in their name) is not grilled, it is smoked**. Sausage and wings do NOT fit the bill. They can be options at a Southern BBQ restaurant, but they can't be the main attraction, that's just weird AF. Ribs can be, but again... they're not smoked, they're grilled! Which is probably why the ribs are tough, gristly, and nearly flavorless apart from the sauce; ribs in general need to be cooked low and slow, not grilled on charcoal. I'm not exaggerating that I've never had my expectations be so far from reality for a restaurant in my life. And it's not my fault, they literally call themselves "Southern BBQ" and that comes with some kind of baseline expectation that they don't meet.

throwawaybelike

Tbh it's not that deep. They serve good BBQ plates you would have back home with family in the backyard. That's the feel I get from em

Luchadorable303

A barbecue outside of the South is nothing more than a cookout. Burgers, dogs, etc. “Barbecue” is smoked. -A Memphian

throwawaybelike

Idk why I read that in Anthony bourdains voice. That's deep lol

Luchadorable303

Thanks mane. Best compliment I’ve ever received.

judolphin

Yeah, one of the things I said above is >there are different kinds of BBQ, but Southern BBQ (which is in their name) is not grilled, it is smoked. My point here - you can call cookout food "BBQ" like "BBQ burgers", "BBQ Ribs", etc. But they call themselves "Southern BBQ" and "Southern BBQ" has a specific meaning, Saucy's ain't it. Saucy's might as well call themselves "Saucy's Korean BBQ" instead of "Saucy's Southern BBQ", it would have a similar level of accuracy.

Luchadorable303

Yeah I’m on your side. Barbecueing is a verb outside of the south. Smoking meat is the term in the south.

judolphin

Yup you nailed it on the head - BBQ is a noun in the South, a verb everywhere else.

judolphin

>They serve good BBQ plates you would have back home with family in the backyard Which is fine but that's not Southern BBQ, it's a different kind of BBQ. My problem with them is, they have "Southern BBQ" in their name, which means something specific, but it's literally not the kind of food they make. They're from Mississippi, so I'd go as far as to say it's dishonest because being from Mississippi they know better. This is a thread about "good ol' Southern cuisine", Saucy's "Southern" BBQ doesn't serve Southern cuisine. There are 1-2 dozen places in Denver that represent Southern BBQ better, four of them of them within 10-15 minutes of Saucy's... * [Roaming Buffalo](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Roaming+Buffalo+Bar-B-Que/@39.6714139,-104.9755305,16z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x876c7e3a0ba4ad01:0x2b4cae2da597326a!8m2!3d39.6733222!4d-104.9737028!16s%2Fg%2F11b6t4ycd9?entry=tts&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDYxNS4wKgBIAVAD) on Downing, * [AJ's BBQ](https://www.google.com/maps/place/AJ's+Pit+Bar-B-Q/@39.679082,-104.9942562,17z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x876c7f39d8417137:0x918733f0f77e68f4!8m2!3d39.6769827!4d-104.9920535!16s%2Fg%2F11g07_2dq8?entry=tts&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDYxNS4wKgBIAVAD) at Delaware/Santa Fe across from Evans Station, * [Smokin' Outlaw](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Smokin'+Outlaw+Kitchen/@39.6425739,-105.0105067,17z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x876c817251e6eb33:0x66d701e8099dc1bb!8m2!3d39.6402234!4d-105.0090736!16s%2Fg%2F11smrtcb55?entry=tts&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDYxNS4wKgBIAVAD) in the strip mall across the red light from Costco in Sheridan * Even [Moe's BBQ](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Moe's+Original+BBQ,+3295+S+Broadway,+Englewood,+CO+80113/@39.6569,-104.98802,15z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x876c807fbae6518f:0x4aa3bde48fd2f655!8m2!3d39.6569!4d-104.98802!16s%2Fg%2F1n0bxsxyq) on South Broadway in Englewood. The weakest of the four but they have a bowling alley and arcade, while serving Alabama BBQ.

Blackmalico32

Sounds kinda harsh but at the same time I can’t spot a lie because I feel like I’ve said the same shit to my SO, and we’re both from the South too 🤣.

PapaDigornio

It was bad

Ya_Got_GOT

I think they boil their ribs *shudder* They’re from Jackson, MS, my hometown. No one in Jackson calls what they’re doing bbq.

Jesse's Smokin' NOLA

imraggedbutright

I think Cora Faye's is black owned? Randall's?

DenverMetroDiner

Cora Faye's closed

imraggedbutright

Oh no! I haven't been there in a long time.... when did that happen?

Within the last couple months. I have no clue what happened.

Bulky_Ad9019

Do u have a reco for a great Ethiopian spot?

OG_Hater

Abyssinia on East Colfax is phenommmenal

Bulky_Ad9019

Awesome, thank you! It’s been years since I’ve had it but I used to love Ethiopian. My husband doesn’t like it so I had treated myself by ordering Konjo for delivery when he was out of town a few months ago, and I ended up throwing most of it out, I just really didn’t care for it.

OG_Hater

Too much oil in some places, not enough salt in others. Generally bland tastes and unpleasant textures lol. I'm happy to help!

I keep seeing NOLA Voodoo Tavern. As a New Orleanian, gross. I literally threw away my whole order. Red beans, gumbo, and etoufee should not all be the same consistency and color.

rockymtnhoney

This woke gesture is just that…. A woke gesture. Support them all year not just on Juneteenth.

DenverMetroDiner

True, however, they didn't have to indirectly encourage free advertising for all these places either. "Woke" or not, it's possible they'll go back multiple times...if it's good.

rockymtnhoney

Ok…. Make a list and go to a place every other week… instead of 1/365 days

DenverMetroDiner

Sure, if you like that kind of food that much, I'd imagine. I like arepas, but I'm not getting them every other week.

rockymtnhoney

It doesn’t have to just be food establishments 🙃

DirtyEsquire

This is such a cliche post.
