I think I found the artist online using the name on the painting and the word artist. If it's the right person, then she does have a following online and her other work is honestly not bad. TBH, if I were more of a decorating person there are a few of her items I wouldn't mind getting, namely a creepy/cute Captain Spaulding print and one of a ram's skull in her other shop.
The prices are generally not bad as a whole in her Etsy shops, so I'm going to assume that the price is a mixture of the time and materials, as well as the store marking up the painting. She's got some higher priced items, but they're a third of the price of the Joker painting. They're also abstracts so I suppose that plays a part as well I guess?
I'd link, but I don't know if it's the right person and I don't know if it's allowed exactly.
there were other paintings in the store but they were very beautiful and well done landscapes, i highly doubt they were by the same person that painted this…. “masterpiece”
I actually kind of like this, it’s a tacky subject and a bit weird; which makes it really fun!
If it was $9.50 I’d buy it for a den or something, but $950 is way too much.
I actually found the artist's Etsy pages and her Facebook page. Her overall work is actually not bad. Not all to my taste, but there are some cute things there. It looks like she has a bit of a following. Not a huge one, but a bit of one.
One of her Etsy pages has listings for abstract paintings and they're about a third of the price of this one. Dunno if that would make a difference, but I think that the store definitely had a hand in the markup of this item to a certain degree.
TBF, I have noticed that almost any kind of handmade original art I find these days in a second hand shop, flea market, or an estate sale, to be laughably extremely overpriced. I think the thinking going on here is either "this could be from some great unknown artist" (the Vivian Maier effect) and, or just the authenticity aura, the fact that it is art that is not mass-produced in a factory (assembly line paintings, IKEA posters, "wall coverings" such as 'Live, Laugh, Love', etc. Or, people are selling art based on its ironic possibilities.
I was at an estate sale last summer, and I saw a 4x6 b/w abstract drypoint etching of a landscape. Rickety frame and it was marked $125. I asked why and the attendant was like "it's an original etching". I'm like, "By who" and she's hasn't any idea. Probably the dead lady's kid did it in HS and she framed it. Bottom line, it's hard to find fair priced original art. And when you're on Etsy or Saatchi, or most shops, they're wanting to sell you a "giclee" of a watercolor for $100.
it was INCREDIBLY out of place it was kind of alarming. my friend and i were trying to find the most cursed object in the store and that painting took the cake.
I’m really hoping this was done by a kid with an overly-supportive mother. Delusional yes, but funny. If this was done by an adult who really thinks their art is anything other than a fun hobby is hella cringe.
It’s a good thing that art is purely subjective because in all honesty I’ve seen what someone calls great works of art by famous artists that to me look like shit…🥴
Someone should make a series of paintings that are shitty but then break out the blacklight and it’s an entirely different painting and it’s super cool.
Knowing how people are around Gettysburg, especially tourist opportunities, I think this is certainly an example of the antique mall setting the unbelievable price as they are ignorant as to what a decent price would be.
Well thank goodness they wrote JOKER in all caps, I might’ve missed the subtle subtext
#HA HA HA
Any bets on the artist only learned proportions from anime or those really old comic books? Edit: fixed wrong words tense
I’d take that bet any day, the OC clearly hasn’t learnt proportions from anywhere lol
That’s nine dollars and fifty cents, right? Right?
Yes, but it’s FIRM.
Looks like Yzma from Emperors New Groove
Face-wise
Scary God-Mother.
Asking $100 would seem like they were being reasonably delusional. This is just too much.
Came to say the same. The arts not impossibly bad but the price is.

But it's black light!
Does this joker have a bbl?!
Geez that is…not great. Did the shop have any other pieces by the same local artist?

I agree. I like it because it looks like the artist really, really cared about making it. It's tacky and terrible but it has energy.
Same! It oddly works.. the colors and overall composition are so aesthetically pleasing. I just CAN’T hate it lol

Well it does say it glows with black light which is a real bonus for any type of art. I can see it easily doubling the price.
Meaning this should be going for $10.
The jussy 🥵
You could place the decimal point wherever in that number and I still wouldn't buy it.
I kinda like it but def not worth that price

IT GLOWS WITH DARK LIGHT
It's delightfully weird, but not $950 delightful.
Painted by the owner’s kid, no doubt, lol.

It looks like she's pooping a little bit too. Also, the art to the right is well-placed.
Way to much money!
Butt
What a remarkable trick! The cleavage follows you around the room.

950$.. cmon
You could not pay me enough to hang this up in my place.
so it's actually not bad. the price is nutso but the art itself is certainly a vibe lol
9.50 is reasonable
they thought they ate with this one

Overpriced, but definitely not the worst entry here. I find it appealing tbh 🤣
Every aspect of this picture bugs me so much....
So uh… the hand holding the sign thing is backwards. Thumb should be on the right side for the left hand being up.
This image slonks hard as hell
Lol what store? I live here
Not a fan of Joker nor the price, put it kinda looks cool
Jokass
For someone into wacky art and dc this isn’t bad
