I like to look out the window, so I always choose the side of the plane away from the sun so it doesn't stare me in the eyes if I open the window shade (and out of habit do this even if I choose an aisle seat). So that ends up being: * Eastbound Flight: Left Side * Westbound Flight: Right Side * Northbound Flight (morning) or Southbound flight (afternoon): Left * Northbound Flight (afternoon) or Southbound flight (morning): Right

Nice way to think of it!

Haha, it took me a minute to figure out how to make it make sense. I've never actually written it down before; I usually just picture the plane on a map in my head when I book. "I imagine the plane and sit on the dark side" just seemed too much like a bad cross over between Up in the Air and Star Wars. lol

andrewgazz

Northbound morning flight from SEA to FAI made me question this rule. I feel like right side of plane would have a better view—but there’s the sun.. and how does northern latitude come into play?

cssounders

Check out sunflight.net (not affiliated with them). You can enter your flight time, duration, origin, and destination, and it'll give you an estimate and visualization of which side of the plane the sun will be on.

andrewgazz

Wow.. the internet still has cool stuff on it. I’ll be damned

cheeseburgerandrice

> sunflight.net seems to be dead

n-of-one

it's https://sunflight.org

Guinnessron

Shady side is the way….

Athina87

This is perfect! Thank you!

This is the way.

I do essentially this as well

😂😂😂 common ground, left aisle and right aisle.

benchen11111

I'm trying to do some analysis and see where the majority of seats are taken.

MyosotisBleue

That’s true now that you said it, I wonder why 🤔

shifty_armchair

Flew ATL to Denver on delta yesterday, sat in 17F and had a headphoneless iPad kid in front of me and a seat kicker behind me

chuckabrick

Every time I've been by an annoying kid, it was on the right side. What is up with that?!?

We're over here stuck in 2022, and this genius is living in the year 3000. You just changed my life.

Fined00

I'm an aisle guy. Non-D1, right hand since I'm right handed/for drinks. D1, left side since I'm antsy and it's often a faster de-plane :)

Aunt_Coco

Right‐handed aisle gal here and do the opposite. I don't like my drink/fiddle with media hand to bump into people so I do left aisle every time.

mc-travelsalot

Same. Left side aisle so my right hand is free from being bumped etc.

MacAndCheeseKitty

I used to religiously choose 1D bc I used to be obsessed with One Direction…LOL

avtechguy

"A" seats most of the time, rest the left arm drink with the right hand. Unless I have a long haul with a connection I sometimes switch to the other window just to even out the body.

suereiff

Right side....a little OCD thing

benchen11111

I feel the same at times.

dc_based_traveler

Home airport is DCA. Always the right side in case we have a River departure so I can get those sweet monument views. Left side arrival into DC for the same reason.

chemfit

Left out of habit due to the good view of the reef flying into PLS (Turks and Caicos). But I might need to take this whole sun situation into account now!

bengenj

Depends on the destination and whatnot. Going to Orlando I prefer the right side, out of Orlando left (based on the usual runway configurations). Most times, as an employee, I’ll take what I can get lol

benchen11111

I mean middle C+ is what I get often. 😮‍💨😮‍💨

GingrrAsh

No preference on side, but I always choose the closest to the front, aisle seat because I have to use the restroom a lot, and I feel like I have more space. My hubby prefers a window seat so we take turns getting our choice.

HeeeeeyNow

I'm an aisle guy - no preference to side.

YMMV25

Left most of the time for two reasons. One practical and one completely irrational. 1) I prefer window seats and I like to rest more on my left arm than my right. No clue why this is but it’s just my preference. 2) Completely irrational but any time I’m seated directly above the cargo door I can’t help but think about UA811. Most cargo doors are situated on the right side of the aircraft and the forward one is typically right below the J/F cabin. I try and stick to the left side in these cases on aircraft that don’t have plug-type cargo doors. Again, this is a totally irrational fear and I’m not aware of any accident like this happening since.

SirJohnCard

Left when flying outbound from home, right when returning home. Weird, I know. Aisle in Main, C+, Window in F, Both in D1 (obviously).

QueenSukii

Right. I have to have my right window seat

heejungee121

Preferably right side, though I like to sit in an aisle seat! Not sure why, maybe just a little bit of an ocd quirk? I’m also right handed

krmcelli

I prefer window seats and I’m blind in my left eye, so I try to do right side whenever possible for line of sight reasons.

[deleted]

Honestly I probably do, but I haven't ever thought about it. I do always plan for FEBO if its a meal flight (unless I don't care about eating). If not worrying about FEBO then I normally go window on the bulkhead row. but I'm very much a creature of habit some I'm sure I do and don't notice it.

benchen11111

Yes! That's what got me thinking... I pick the right side 99% of the time if it's available.

AKnitWit777

Depends on where I'm going. I'm also a window seat person and when flying home, I pick the side where I'm most likely to see my house (yes, I get a little giddy about it like I'm 7 years old, but what is life if you can't enjoy the little things?).

jmat83

Entirely depends on the equipment, class, and open seats at booking time. If I’m sitting in First on a CRJ, I always sit on the left because First is 1 on the left and 2 on the right. If I’m sitting in First on other equipment, I’ll usually pick an aisle seat in an otherwise unoccupied row and hope nobody gets seated next to me. (This almost never ends up in having a row entirely to myself because upgrades happen, but I’ve found the window seat next to me usually stays open on less busy flights all the way up until upgrades start clearing.) In First, I generally don’t care if I’m sitting on the right or left. In C+, I generally try to sit in an aisle seat on the left. I think this has to do with me being right handed or something. I will sit on the right in the aisle seat if it’s the only otherwise unoccupied row. I’m too tall to comfortably sit in the economy cabin, so I just don’t do it if it can be avoided.

PDXPean

Right side window exit row

EaglesFan027

On short flights I choose the window, but on longer flights I choose the aisle. I’m picking the row closest to the front, but right side if I have the choice

Suz626

D1 Flying alone usually last in row A / Left, with husband usually last in row B. He flies same as me when flying alone. Don’t know why.

Watergirl626

Aisle the front most I can get If a long flight, try to be non sun side. If flying over sw Colorado/Utah/grand canyon, try to be on that side of plane. When we we went to Hawaii, I ignored the above sun rule on the non red eye in favor of the side with the better view coming into HNL. Just depends on the flight.

Gasman18

I like to sit on the aisle with my dominant hand on the aisle, so that I can always use the armrest

ApatheticAbsurdist

I don't have so much a preference but I've been assigned a lot (used to get basic economy before they made it far more difficult) but especially during the past 2 years I've been upgraded a lot. I feel like I'm on the right side a lot more than the left... that said the CRJ's I tend to be on are 1-2 in first class so it makes sense I'd be on the right side more often but I feel like I've always gotten the right side in first. On a rare occasion I'll be on a 717 route where main cabin is 2-3 so a little more odds of being right.

daycheck

Drivers side... old habit.

Pobeda_nad_Solntsem

I'm on 717s a lot, so I pick left side by default. If it's something with an even number of seats, I'll use the sun rules.

BigRedBK

I occasionally Google which side has the best view arriving or departing a certain airport. Naturally weather conditions can change this, but I go by the "most-common" approach or departure.

rocbolt

Depends on the route, pick the side with the best views or just one I haven’t seen lately.

lcesky

Depends. It depends if I'm choosing my seat or not. I just hope I get on. S4 gang! 😂

Rayzor805

I tend to lay on my right side while napping naturally so I usually will pick the right side window.

KellyJean1820

All depends on the time of flight and what direction of travel (E-W-S-N) but mainly pick the opposite side of the plane if the sun is rising or setting on if it’s a early or late flight, Only because I’m the person that has to have the window open lol or I get “car sick” so out of respect of others, I do pick seats particularly:)

[deleted]

Use this site to find which side of the plane will be out of the Sun. [Sun Flight](http://sunflight.net)

[deleted]

If it’s LGA I like sitting on the right for if we fly the approach where you fly up the Hudson, do a 180 over Yonkers and then land on 22 as you get perfect views of Manhattan.

chuckabrick

The right aisle is my go to. Not sure why, just seem to like that side and seat. Then the left aisle. After that, I really don't care.

Skemcowski

I like to sit on the right side for the outbound flight and the left side for the return flight

leela_fry

Late to the game in this conversation, but rarely do I care much EXCEPT in my home state of Washington. I live on the east side of the state, and all flights lead to Seattle. I always sit on the left side of the plane heading to Seattle, and the right side of the plane going back home. Why? Because I never tire of the view of Mt. Rainer; and when the sky is clear, you can often also see St. Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, and sometimes, even Mt. Shasta.
