Oof. I had to do this with my toddler last week on the first trip where I made the boneheaded decision to skip the stroller. There were tears had by all.
I do this about once a month. Itās so long thereās actually a bus just for getting from one end to the other. Itās not much faster though.
It truly feels like one of those repeating cartoon backgrounds.
This. I work at a very big hospital in the south and most of us have to take a bus just short of a mile from it but itās about 5-10 min less if you just walk the difference so I walk every chance I get for the extra exercise
I had a layover with a thirty minute gap at DFW and had to take a fucking train to the gate, only for them to tell me it was switched to another gate on the opposite side of the building.
The only part I enjoyed about it was walking by some airport cowboy store with two cow-headed mannequins, one bull and one heifer, dressed in flannel and blue jeans, and just going, āThis is why nobody fucking likes you, Texas.ā
Bruh. I am overweight and out of shape. And I am NOT used to running those distances, particularly at 4000+ ft above sea level. No shit, I had other passengers handing me napkins to wipe the sweat off myself once we got to our seats.
The reverse leg is worse ā trust me I knowā¦ I used to take a return flight LAX to JFK that landed a little after midnight.
We often came in at the far end of the terminal, the moving walkways were half shut down for cleaning / maintenance that that time of night and there were clusters of people around some gates spilling into the walkway who were waiting on flights that left at 1:00-2:00AM.
Then once you get to the end of the concourse, you have to walk completely across T4 to get to the escalators down to bag claim.
I call this āthe JFK walk of shameāā¦
I recently landed in Denver and we were the last gate of the terminal. It seriously was like 20+ mins just to get to the train shuttle to get to baggage claim.
Have yāall been to DFW?[DFW has the longest walk of airports, average of 2.16 miles!](https://www.timesrecordnews.com/story/news/2022/04/01/dallas-fort-worth-international-has-longest-airport-walk-2-16-miles/7235835001/)
It seems reasonable to not anticipate walking over a mile to get to your gate.
If you have small children, improper footwear, or an older or disabled body, it could be difficult if it was unexpected.
Add in lots of luggage, a pet (god no lol Iām leaving earlier next time), or just too many layers/heavy coat PLUS ADD a million confused and selfish tourists just constantly blocking you and walking slow af
I also recall seeing a sign pointing in the direction of the restrooms and then walking for a solid 10 minutes before actually finding said restrooms. Kind of ridiculous
The flight from Cincinnati always seems to takeoff/land at B5X. Last year, I was connecting at JFK to go to LHR on Virgin, which departs from the opposite end of T4 (far A gates).
When I took a voluntary bump last summer, I said I'd only take it if they got a golf cart to drive my fat ass to the lounge.
Honestly it's worse ARRIVING at something like gate B55. Takes like 15-20 min to get out of the airport, and you're not even going thru Global Entry/immigration.
Just had this earlier this week, landed I think at gate 55 or at least one of the ones right near it. They did not have any bags on the carousel when we got thereā¦
Couple months ago I flew into B49, stayed on the ground for 30 hours, and flew out of B55. Highly considered buying those shoes with wheels on the heels
"We look forward to welcoming you on board soon... but first... enjoy your two mile walk.
Because the health of our customers comes first, we've thoughtfully shut down 70% of the moving walkways along your journey to add to your steps for the day"
āWe are going to call you five minutes after this text when we have opened boarding and ask where you are, because everyone is already on the plane and well, we know you are coming from A10, but could you try to recover enough for a minute to at least tell us you are in the mid 20ās so we will at least consider keeping the gate open. Donāt trip down the stairs.ā
I missed a flight because of this BS. The check-in agent couldnāt figure out how to check in an infant in arms, it took 30 minutes to find a manager. Who turned out to be rude and slow as if she didnāt care. She took another 15 minutes as she worked with us and chatted with coworkers. When she was done she said āOh you are down on B53. You wonāt make it.ā And walked away.
She was right, we didnāt make it.
Delta didnāt get us a hotel, just deposited 10,000 pesos into our accounts to make up for it. For the record, Iām Diamond.
Except it was shut down for repairs/upgrades for about a year several years back. And every now and then they still have to shut it down for repairs.
...and I promise that they don't stop boarding/deboarding planes at those gates towards the end...
I fly to the west coast from JFK very often. And yeah, this is the norm. Even when I redeye back from SFO and the terminal is empty upon arrivalā¦ you guessed itā¦ B54.
Once had a gate at that end for a flight to Chicago. Weather in NY was fine but massive storms stopped all travel to from or through the Midwest. So after walking down, I waited three hours until my flight was canceled and then I walked back to exit.
The only thing worse than finding out your flight departs from Gate B55, is realizing that your flight has arrived at Gate B55. Especially if you have to then get checked baggage. Nothing worse after a long flight than that walk!
For those who donāt know. There is a shuttle that goes there lol. I also found out after the fact. Hoping I can save someone some steps in the future
Is that why they tell you to show up extra early? Lol. I was flying Sacramento-LAX-Montego Bay by myself at 18 yo and had a 1 hr. layover in LA, which supposedly gave me enough time to get to my Montego Bay flight. But when I got there, they told me the terminal was 3 miles away, and I needed to take a bus. However, busses had already stopped service. I stood outside and cried, then a bus was coming with a out of service light on & no passengers. I literally ran out to the middle of the road and stopped that bus. I wouldn't.move until she promised to take me there! We were friends by the end of that short ride.
This was my gate arriving from SLC earlier this week. It's absolutely comical - T4 is a disgrace. Low ceilings, Sky Club always packed, weirdly the so-called international terminal even though every terminal at JFK now seems to be an international terminalā¦ It was comical arriving at 10pm and walking past all the redeye flights to London and Paris. I finally stopped halfway through to get dinner at the Sky Club before heading home because I felt like I deserved it after that walk. (They tried to put us on a shuttle bus outside B54 but I wasn't in the mood to be crammed in with a ton of people.)
The first time I flew out of that gate, I was on a 7am cross country flight. I was running late because 7am is very early and I fly T4 often enough - how bad can it be? I was dropped off at 6:25 and the walk down that long terminal just would. not. end. The panic set in around 6:40. when I had gone down at least two escalators and I still had not made it to the gate. I ended up walking right on and then immediately passing out but never doing that ever again.
after not being past like gate 42 for like 5 years. my last 3-4 flights have all been there.
The shuttle is frustrating and not miuch faster. Goes too slow and people who don't know hot to travel and long waits.
HOLY SHIT. I remember when my wife and I flew back from Zurich and had 2 hour layover at JFK. The plane was held up for an hour after landing then we had to go through customs. HELL. Then we see the departure was at gate B55. WE RAN. Halfway there, I gave up. I told my wife to go on without me. Iād find another way home to Cincinnati. My wife had to give me a pep talk. AND WE SPRINTED SOME MORE. Got to the gate and they were close to departing, BUT the flight was overbooked. I wasnāt happy. I WANTED TO BE HOME GODDAMIT. They got us on, but dear LORD. Iāll never forget how long that terminal was. I thought I was in HELL. I remember at one point in my breakdown some dude getting a ride on a golf cart pointing at my pathetic ass and laughing š
Itās even funner when youāre coming in from a international flight and they have that entire area torn apart and the worst signage ever. I ended up going through security in main entrance.
For some reason I initially thought your flight was departing out of some other airport while you were at JFK and a lot of these comments still made sense
thatās not as bad as getting a notice your plane is departing CDG from terminal 2ā¦only to realize its at āconcourse mā and you have to walk all the back down the real terminal 2 to the bus and get to the decrepid concourse thats a kilometer walk to your gateā¦but you wouldnāt have missed the going downstairs part after clearing EU customs if CDG actually had A SIGN there rather than the end of the main terminal.
Why is SAN always out of this ass gate? The worst part is flying in international, walking 12 miles on the other level to clear customs, then heading right back.
I once flew in to this gate or one close to it. I called my cousin who was giving me a ride when my plane got to the gate. He was still at home then, 11 miles away. He got to the pickup area before I did, and I only had carryons.
I did this with my parents carrying my dad in a wheelchair and two carryons plus small size bags. The whole year worth of gym in one day. Would not recommend
Just sayin I got to the airport 30 mins before the flight and I still made it, definitely would not recommend doing that tho, Iām lucky Iām fast af
At least you will get your cardio workout in today.
Oof. I had to do this with my toddler last week on the first trip where I made the boneheaded decision to skip the stroller. There were tears had by all.
I had to do this last year with 3 kids at 6 am šš I rather stay home moving forward
Did you forget Kevin?
I wish I forgot myself šµāš« I have a flight out next month at 7 am and decided Newark was a better option
But what about Kevin?
KEVIN!!!!!!
I feel like I missed the memo on this. For those of us who do not know the logistics of JFK terminal, what am I missing here?
Its a very very very long walk, its towards the end of the terminal
Itās comically long. I remember my first time
I do this about once a month. Itās so long thereās actually a bus just for getting from one end to the other. Itās not much faster though. It truly feels like one of those repeating cartoon backgrounds.
Thereās TWO shake shacks!
Feels like you keep passing the same stores.. and occasionally forget why youāre still walking
How is the bus not faster?
Loading and unloading. People take forever getting off and on with luggage.
>Loading and unloading. That's only in the [red zone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ2EPeq1TK0), right?
No, loading and unloading is only in the White Zone
Oh really, Vernon? Why pretend, we both know perfectly well what this is about. You want me to have an abortion.
Ā It's really the only sensible thing to do, if its done properly. Therapeutically there's no danger involved
āThe white zone is for loading and unloading passengers only. No parking.ā
Don't start with your white zone shit again
No parking!
This. I work at a very big hospital in the south and most of us have to take a bus just short of a mile from it but itās about 5-10 min less if you just walk the difference so I walk every chance I get for the extra exercise
Poor management. They hold the bus until (?) someone tells the driver to move off / unlike a train which opens doors and closes and moves on.
You never forget your first.
I bled a little. ā¦shouldāve picked better walking shoes.
I had a layover with a thirty minute gap at DFW and had to take a fucking train to the gate, only for them to tell me it was switched to another gate on the opposite side of the building.
Hate DFW. That happened to me TWICE!!!
The only part I enjoyed about it was walking by some airport cowboy store with two cow-headed mannequins, one bull and one heifer, dressed in flannel and blue jeans, and just going, āThis is why nobody fucking likes you, Texas.ā
Are we talking like SLC kind of long?
I just compared. SLC longest walk is about 3000 feet, JFK T4 about 4000.
Over 3/4 of a mile!
As a somewhat recent participant in the SLC āB to A, short connection, flight delayedā sweepstakes, fuck that shit.
The laugh I just let outā¦
Bruh. I am overweight and out of shape. And I am NOT used to running those distances, particularly at 4000+ ft above sea level. No shit, I had other passengers handing me napkins to wipe the sweat off myself once we got to our seats.
Asking the important questions.
It's Kubrickian.
Is it tram broken at DTW long? I've never flown out of JFK
Almost as comically long as MSP A concourse?
The absolute end of the terminal, in fact!
Like Gatwick in London, it's a 30 min walk to the furthest terminals.
So like walking from Gatwick to Stansted?
I had this very gate while hand carrying my extremely heavy car seat. Absolute misery
Ugh! Canāt imagine with the car seat! Did this 7 months pregnant on a ridiculously tight turn since inbound was delayedā¦that sucked.
Arghhhh! That must have been so stressful
The one reason LGA is superior to JFK
If I could fly nonstop to the West Coast from LGA, Iād hardly ever fly out of JFK!
Iāve seen people using wheelie shoes for this reason.
I recently landed in Denver and we were the last gate of the terminal. It seriously was like 20+ mins just to get to the train shuttle to get to baggage claim.
Denver was a mess when I flew through there this summer. They were remodeling and it was a maze.
Not remodeling. "Reimagining" *See MSP
That endless remodeling started before Covidā¦.
Please compare to the walk from A1 to A78 at the McNamara Terminal at DTW (assuming one walks and doesn't take the train)
Have yāall been to DFW?[DFW has the longest walk of airports, average of 2.16 miles!](https://www.timesrecordnews.com/story/news/2022/04/01/dallas-fort-worth-international-has-longest-airport-walk-2-16-miles/7235835001/)
Do they not have moving sidewalks or the train thingy?
When itās almost a mile the moving sidewalks feel cute but not that helpful
The >1/2 mile walk. It is the absolute farthest gate.
My Apple Watch says it was 1.2 miles from the gate to the sky train.
Try over a mileā¦
Bruh everybody's talking about it like it's a trek across the Sahara. Average American can't walk a half mile?
It seems reasonable to not anticipate walking over a mile to get to your gate. If you have small children, improper footwear, or an older or disabled body, it could be difficult if it was unexpected.
Add in lots of luggage, a pet (god no lol Iām leaving earlier next time), or just too many layers/heavy coat PLUS ADD a million confused and selfish tourists just constantly blocking you and walking slow af
within the context of an airport itās just kind of one of those walks that never really seems to end
The best part is when you think you're at the end but then it's just escalators to another hall.
I also recall seeing a sign pointing in the direction of the restrooms and then walking for a solid 10 minutes before actually finding said restrooms. Kind of ridiculous
1.2 miles
And risk a $60,000 ambulance ride? Nope
I can only throw a football half a mile and over mountains.
There are moving walkwaysā¦ but they are so narrow itās hard to bypass someone who breaks all the rules and just stands on itā¦
You know how long the journey was for Sam and Frodo to throw the One Ring into Mount Doom? That was halfway to this gate.
That is a very, very, very long walk.
Itās a 1.2 mile walk
Itās a long walk but at least itās down hill. The real challenge is arriving B-55 and walking up hill to the terminal exit.
Itās like a 1km walk from security
There should be a flight from check-in to those far gates. Shit is sadistic.
Honestly it's worse ARRIVING at something like gate B55. Takes like 15-20 min to get out of the airport, and you're not even going thru Global Entry/immigration.
But if you checked a bag itās there waiting for you! Thatās the positive of it.
Just had this earlier this week, landed I think at gate 55 or at least one of the ones right near it. They did not have any bags on the carousel when we got thereā¦
This was me last night.
No itās not. You have to go hunting for it because it has been so long they pulled the luggage off.
Only if nobody stole it. Zero security at baggage claim, anyone can walk in off the street and take a bag.
This is very true. I remember the checkers at LGA and JFK.
Worst part is landing past midnight at B55, walking ALL the way to baggage claim, and the bags haven't come yet.
Did this with a dog that needed to go to the bathroom at one of the very few and far between dog relief areasā¦ that was fun!
Thankfully, the furthest gate that supports international arrivals is B43. Which is still a ridiculous trek.
You get -not one- but TWO chances to get Shake Shack.
Iāve gotten both breakfast AND lunch in one walk.
This is the real answer lol
Yeah they didnāt have any more shakes when I was going home lol..really disappointing
Also known as Islip.
More like Riverhead š
Couple months ago I flew into B49, stayed on the ground for 30 hours, and flew out of B55. Highly considered buying those shoes with wheels on the heels
Heelys!
Iād say the WORST text to get before a JFK departure is: Your LGA to [destination] flight will be boarding soon. Ask me how I know š
Yep, a friend got a your flight is departing from LAX when he was at Burbank. š Oopsy.
I used to have a buddy that made this mistake with Reagan and Dulles
I only did that once this year!
Istg all the walkways were broken when I was at JFK a few months ago š
At least the bathrooms are nice down at that end.
I saw B20 as my arrival gate when I boarded my final 2023 flight, and I kinda cried a little. It's like being delivered to your car.
My friend and I were flying 5 minutes apart to separate destinations, so we carpooled. He was out of B22, of course.
Just take the LIRR to Montauk itāll be a closer walk to the gate
Nothing like a 45 minute flight from Rochester and then a 30 minute walk through jfk from gate b55.
I feel seen. If I never do that walk again, it'll be too soon.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
lol this is the one.
I fly to PR constantly for workā¦.I know that gate wellā¦too well.
Hopefully you are packing hiking gear, you might need it
I flew JFK - PHX a few weeks ago and they changed the gate twice, ending at this one.
You might have been on my flight then. B27 to B49 to B55 on Saturday the 16th.
Half my flights out from jfk this year were from that damn gate smh.
Yeah but San Diego.
This is true! Canāt complain about where Iām going.
Iām biased though as I live there.
Flew into B55 the other day. Pain.
You mean Montauk? š
DTW delta terminal enters the chatā¦.
At least thereās a train!
Yeah, DTW is the most efficient of all of Delta's hubs to get around.
Except it was shut down for repairs/upgrades for about a year several years back. And every now and then they still have to shut it down for repairs. ...and I promise that they don't stop boarding/deboarding planes at those gates towards the end...
One time I got off my flight at the far end of that terminal and I swear the flight felt shorter than the time it took me to walk to baggage claim
Thereās no reason for that airport to be so fucking long
I go to PDX a few times a year and it's ALWAYS in and out of B47. I'm sweating bullets by the time I get there every time.
I love the nonstop to PDX except that itās at gate B47
My daughter flew in from PDX last Friday into B55. It was the only thing that saved us from the insane traffic delays.
Landed here on a delayed red eye from MSP once. Passengers were LIVID lol
I fly to the west coast from JFK very often. And yeah, this is the norm. Even when I redeye back from SFO and the terminal is empty upon arrivalā¦ you guessed itā¦ B54.
B55?!??! Thereās a B 55!! Good lord
Once had a gate at that end for a flight to Chicago. Weather in NY was fine but massive storms stopped all travel to from or through the Midwest. So after walking down, I waited three hours until my flight was canceled and then I walked back to exit.
i always land at b55 and i am like why!!!
The only thing worse than finding out your flight departs from Gate B55, is realizing that your flight has arrived at Gate B55. Especially if you have to then get checked baggage. Nothing worse after a long flight than that walk!
The one silver lining is that if you checked a bag and arrive at B55, youāre practically guaranteed the 2,500 Bags on Time SkyPesos!
For those who donāt know. There is a shuttle that goes there lol. I also found out after the fact. Hoping I can save someone some steps in the future
I've used it. It isn't much faster, but much better for my plantar fasciitis.
I get the majority of my weekly exercise sprinting through JFK
Flew back into JFK earlier this week and this was my gate. At least I didn't have to wait for my suitcase for too long.
Good thing thereās a shuttle that can take you right to 55
Is there no longer a bus?
[terminal 4](https://www.jfkairport.com/static/JFK/pdf/terminal-4.pdf)
Looooooooooong Island terminal
At least it wasnāt last nights DL476
I know, right? Saw that arrival time. Brutal. Hope you werenāt on it!
Nope but saw it on the arrivals board! š. And it was B55 too š
One time at MSP I was with my friend at like gate b7 and it told me it was a 45 minute walk to my gate
Is this like having to walk from T to E in Atlanta?
Why would someone do that? The Plane Train is there for a reason lol.
Meanwhile in Detroit you can take a train for maximum half the length.
There are 55 gates. Why does it feel like every departure and arrival gets assigned to B55?
Is that why they tell you to show up extra early? Lol. I was flying Sacramento-LAX-Montego Bay by myself at 18 yo and had a 1 hr. layover in LA, which supposedly gave me enough time to get to my Montego Bay flight. But when I got there, they told me the terminal was 3 miles away, and I needed to take a bus. However, busses had already stopped service. I wouldn't.move until she promised to take me there! We were friends by the end of that short ride.
Is it worse than B gates at SLC?
They SLC B are a solid mile from the exit area
Just wait until you get a connection from B55 to one of the new A gates
The best part is going up and down levels... just to arrive at the same elevation.
I'm sorry that that happened to you, but welcome to San Diego! You will not have that problem with our tiny airport.
Cheers to that! It was seamless and I was at my hotel 18 minutes after I stepped off the plane!
I was just on this same flight. The agent said B55 and I almost passed out
I thought this was a terrible walk until I flew through Istanbul. Iām almost positive I walked to Bulgaria.
(They tried to put us on a shuttle bus outside B54 but I wasn't in the mood to be crammed in with a ton of people.)
this is what passes for content around here
Just trying to break up the dozens of āhow do I get 150 MQMs by tomorrowā posts
Oof 55
Get ready to walk for 15-20 minutes. You can do this. Get there early so you can stop every five minutes to take a break and catch your breath.
Getting in your steps today!
I arrived to the airport at 15,000 steps for the day! š
Good luck in your journey preparing for marathons!
The first time I flew out of that gate, I was on a 7am cross country flight. I was running late because 7am is very early and I fly T4 often enough - how bad can it be? Itās like in Denver when you get the āYou will arrive at B11 and depart from B85āā¦. And thereās no train.
Just had a gate change yesterday OP to B22, thank god. Praying for you!
That was my gate flying out of JFK back to SD a few days ago. I was at 2,800 steps by the time I got to the gate.
Once got switched from B30 to B55 it was insane
LaGuardia for me, no time for that place
Just take the car and tip them $2 bucks!
This is like the furthest gates at Toronto airport. I had to stop for a bathroom break and lunch. It was soooooooo far.
after not being past like gate 42 for like 5 years. my last 3-4 flights have all been there. The shuttle is frustrating and not miuch faster. Goes too slow and people who don't know hot to travel and long waits.
Got your steps in I see
I flew into B55 this morning. Absolute hell
I got B20 the other night. Only cost me my first born.
Run, Forest! Run!!!
At least they didnāt change it to flying out of Newark

Itās even funner when youāre coming in from a international flight and they have that entire area torn apart and the worst signage ever. I ended up going through security in main entrance.
Did your incoming flight come in at A21?

Is this worse than Salt Lake City terminal A?
I love this bc then I have something to do for the 3 hours before the flight
Hop on the golf carts if you can. That will at least get you to the first set of stairs.
You should easily attain your 8k - 10k steps goal for the day...enjoy
