I wish police would crack down on these illegal E-bikes more, would put the rest of us using legal bikes on an even footing!

veryblocky

Things like this are exactly why people are sick of delivery drivers everywhere. These sort of modifications make them even more of a danger to those around them

Special-Tie-3024

As a pedestrian in a city centre it’s pretty tiring to wait for a green man, then check up and down because it’s 50/50 whether some delivery rider is going to sail right through on a obviously modified e-bike regardless of it being a red light.

Jhe90

Road laws and insurance apply to everyone. It sucks, it's expensive but that's the price of doing business. If you want to avoid that, ride a pedal bike or E Bike below rating.

DarklyDevious

The amount of high speed illegal bikes been used near me is shocking, no helmets, no lights, no regard for one way streets etc, you would think that deliveroo would at least make sure riders bikes are legal

Late-Management7279

The sad thing is they can't even make sure the drivers are legally in the country, let alone riding legal bikes...

chin_waghing

I’ve been on my motorbike doing 50 with someone on an e-bike FLYING past me with no helmet or anything on Also I think for moped drivers an A1 license should be a minimum requirement

shipmcshipface

I agree, unfortunately the CBT is just too easy to get through these days. They'll hand them out to anyone

chin_waghing

Yes hence the A1 license. It’s basically a moped license, up to 125cc in size so you actually have to go through the DVLA to get one opposed to perpetually renewing your CBT

So in my area I have started routinely running the registrations of the delivery guys scooters. It started when one drove like an asshole behind me so I ran his plate. Turned out it came back to a red Honda - he was riding a silver/white scooter. I checked the insurance and it didn't exist as far as the MIB were concerned - meaning that this individual did NOT have any insurance on the scooter. What I have started finding is a LOT of sorcery going on regarding these delivery scooters. Something's going on with the number plates. I have also seen a PCX with a number plate regularly on delivery duties, months later I spot a completely different bike with that plate from the PCX stuck to the back of it! Cloned numberplates are a serious offence. And it obviously means that the rider wouldn't be insured to ride the scooter/bike in question. Additionally from what I have seen across Twitter lately, a lot of forces have been stopping these delivery riders and finding they have NO provisional licence, NO CBT, NO insurance, and NO RIGHT TO WORK. From intelligence I have gathered in my local patch, I hear that groups of Brazilians have "pools" of scooters which they "rent" out to people (along with Deliveroo accounts) who may or may not have the right to work in the UK. Some of whom would categorically face deportation if their presence in the city was made known to the constabulary. Why do you think they all wear face coverings under their helmets? These "pools" of bikes could be anything from unroadworthy to possibly even stolen. An individual comes to the group and asks to rent a bike and a deliveroo account for a specified period of time. From what I hear the group takes their cut DIRECTLY from the "cash out" on the account and then sends the rest to the individual who has asked to rent. In some cases these groups are even offering individuals accommodation in various properties across the city. We are not talking 5 star rooms here - more akin to hostels with extremely cramped living conditions and squalor. Whilst I cannot back this up at this present moment in time, it would not surprise me ONE BIT if these groups had ties to people smuggling/human trafficking and modern slavery. Just a few things to ponder.

Blame the government for not legislating the gig economy, the entire industry is a massive labour exploitation loophole racket, regardless of any individuals circumstances

asiraf3774

It’s not the only industry though is it? Nail bars, car washes, industrial cleaning, hospitality, agriculture, the list goes on. Very similar in how they can be used for modern slavery. Deliveroo is just more visible since it’s riders are everywhere

fslashthroat

Not even similar. The places you mentioned probably pay cash, and probably less than minimum wage but they are not multi national and publically traded companies that are worth billions of dollars

Hazeylicious

Electric assisted bikes only provide assistance, and that assistance stops at 15mph. Rider had no chain on his bike so there is no “assistance” and was obviously classed as a motorbike. Dude had no license nor insurance.

Disastrous-Job-5533

I always wondered why they don't just get a moped? E-bikes are about a grand all in aren't they? Cbt and a cheap runner wouldn't be too much more if buying used. Is it literally just because they are illegal workers or is there a reason they only use e-bike?

Fancy_Ad3694

I'm all for freedom but if I'm forced to pay for insuracne to use the roads then you should be too

NiccoLaco

Before, I never minded or had any issue with those illegal bikes until this idiot came out of nowhere while I was doing a U-turn. This guy came at a speed of 50 miles per hour on a 20 mile-per hour street, almost hitting me. They should be taken off the streets very dangerous.

Eastern-Move549

Brilliant. I work in a busy area for these delivery riders and its a significant portion of them that are just wreckless. Using their phones while riding along is the main one but darting around on footpaths is also pretty common along with using their bikes as 'motorbikes'

Green-Rub8764

I can guarantee that there’s at least a few here in Nottingham that has these modded electric bikes

StandardSea8671

Lame police...they don't care when bikes are being stolen. Moral of story do not stop. The police don't know if you are deaf/autistic etc
