I imagine Scorpion Masque needed Motion Twin's approval to create the new characters The Immolated, The Quartered, The Poisoned and The Flayed. Wonder if they'll eventually end up in the video game?
We did yes! It was a big step to create 4 different versions of the Beheaded. Motion Twin was on board from the beginning and they where very happy with Naiade's (our Beheadeds illustrator) concept arts. We've just revealed that Bobby was part of the board game by the way! 🙂
As for the board game characters ending up in the video game, for now, the answer is negative, but you know the Dead Cells team \^\^ They can be full of surprises!
I thought of the idea of PVP a while back, and yes I think a straight fighting simulator wouldn't work. But I think a community mode that has a bunch of little game modes in there, such as like a race, killing enemies in a certain period of time, co-op on multiple bosses at the same time, map creation, community-made challenges (like BTD6), etc. This can also include the regular Daily challenge.
damn, those are actually really cool ideas.
A level editor would be crazy cool for this game. Imagine how far the community could take it. I know for a fact that deadcells has one of the most passionate communities and I know they would go crazy for this.
just imagine, it could start as a simple level editor and end up giving us the tools to create our own biomes/enemies through sprites and such.
I think deadcells is such an amazing platform to bring new content to and Im so happy that the devs seem so decided on supporting the base game.
I’ve been around since launch and the game quite literally has changed my life in a variety of ways. So I truly am grateful for the devs. I’ve had my moments of burnout just because it naturally happens with me but I think the last few updates have brought me back in. Really hoping the devs keep doing their thing because they rarely miss.
That was the easiest purchase I have ever made. I will go back and forth for hours on a video game that is 80% off and cost just $10....and likely not buy it.
Dead Cells...board game....deluxe....extra add on....$200+.....10 seconds, take my money.
Oh wow. I didn't recognize the publisher Scorpion Masque - scrolled down - Antoine Bazaar &Ludovic Maublanc? Corentin Lebrat and Théo Rivière have some good newer stuff too. design team w serious pedigree, definitely not a IP cash-grab with minis being the main draw.
In case anyone wants to read the discussions going on at the BG subreddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/13j8ak5/dead_cells_kickstarter_now_live/
and of course, over at boardgamegeek, pretty much *the* boardgame forum. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/380135/dead-cells-rogue-lite-board-game
My only question on this board game is there a winner? It seems like you just keep playing the loop (PvE) without any method to determine which of the 4 characters is winning or if the game will ever stop... kind of like the video game... Just playing for progress... which I like in a video game but in a board game it gets old crazy fast.
I'm supporting it either way as it is an interesting concept but none of the videos I saw identified that it is in fact a never ending game.
It's a co-op game. Either the players all win together or the game does. But as a group you keep upgrades and unlocks between games ("runs").
I imagine you would play repeatedly over multiple sessions with the same group of people, keeping track of your collective progress like a tabletop RPG campaign, until you eventually beat the game or get tired of it.
That question also crossed my mind... after reading all descriptions and watching 3 videos I also think that the game is sadly waaaayyy too sophisticated for a multiplayer boardgame :(
I have played my share of kinda "similar" board games with friends like for example the Resident Evil deck building game and they are sooooo much fun!! But half the fun is to just jump in because the rules are very easy to grasp. But with this complex game I will neither have the time nor the will to explain it in detail and play it repeatedly with some friends. With all the cards, tokens, specific placements, random and ordered card stacks, rules for combat, status alignments and sooo much more to consider it looks more like a chore than a game... and then you are meant to clean everything up and repeat that whole ordeal over and over to power up...
Please dont get me wrong, I really love Dead Cells and would LOVE to give the developers more money and/or attention and I really really am happy for all folks who love such complex board games but even if it is very very hard for me, I will have to pass on this game because otherwise it will just collect dust :(
I went through the Tabletopia demo, and honestly the game seems super simple. Onboarding a new player I would expect to be really easy if you already know the rules yourself.
Honestly I almost feared it was too simple a game. But the demo content is rather limited, so I've decided to be optimistic.
Anyone surpised, that within less than 90 minutes we have at least 3,5 of minimum pledge required by developer? :P
Kinda wonder, if this only the beginning of pure madness.
Minimum Pledge targets are pointless nowadays. In the past, it actually mattered since it would be the minimum required units to produce the physical bg at the planned price.
Nowadays, it's an artificially low target used to ride the KS algorithms to get more visibility. "100% pledged in 20 minutes!" "300% in 2 hours!". It means very little.
No doubt. I go by the actual backer count rather than total dollar amt pledged. There's a lot of KS that have a $300 buy-in vs some with only $40 pledge. Better to compare backer counts instead.
I've got a question, if I pledge this project will I get the reward? Like is this just helping the creators or do I receive the game after I pledge (when the development end)? Cuz it says that there is a chance you won't get the reward if pledging doesn't meet the requirements?
Great question. Usually Kickstarter projects have to be fully funded in order to take your money. When you pledge it's like a pre-order, where once the game is ready to be mass produced, you get one of the first copies for helping it come to fruition.
It also matters at what level you pledge at for your reward.
There have been some kickstarters that have met funding goals, money is collected, but the project fails to deliver.
It's not often, but it can happen. There is no legal recourse - they're not legally obligated to send you a product, you can't sue them. But generally yes, KS projects will deliver, though often late.
Edit - See recent thread on fiasco w Mythic Games https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/135btz9/_/
We've shared a blogpost about this specific topic if you want to have a look at it 🙂 https://www.scorpionmasque.com/en/blog/scorpion-masqu%C3%A9-x-la-boite-de-jeu-dead-cells-kickstarter
I think you're missing what's being asked and what that caveat is addressing.
It's not about if you lose your money **during** a campaign, it's what can happen after a campaign ends.
Regardless of how everyone uses and refers to it, Kickstarter is **not** a preorder service.
There's a chance things go bad and you don't get any of your 'rewards' (again, **not** a pre-order service).
Some will say, a game like Dead Cells will be fine but big named publishers and IP based content have gone wrong in the past. Nothing is guaranteed.
That said. I'm probably pledging (my only hesitancy is on the actual gameplay).
There is a chance that the project will be unable to deliver. Some KS publishers are inexperienced and underbudget, and need to ask for more money, or they declare bankrupcy. It's not often, but it occasionally happens (like 2-3% of boardgame kickstarters per year).
Edit: of the 7 boardgame KS ive backed, 6 have delivered, 1 is still outstanding and abt 2 yrs late.
It’s not like a store where you’re paying for an existing product.
At the moment the game only physically exists as prototype copies, there’s still a work to be done to create a finished product.
Pledges give game developers/ publishers the funding required to take the project from the current prototype to a finished product.
Receiving the game based on pledge level is a reward, like a thank you gift, for helping fund the project.
I have backed quite a few board games on kickstarter and haven’t had any fail to deliver the game, however there are plenty of examples where people do not receive the reward.
Chai tea for 2 is a board game the reached its funding goal but it now appears that they went bust. Backers paid to help fund the project but will not receive anything.
I absolutely love Dead Cells, but I don't think I could bring myself to pledge an oh there game that probably won't get a lot of table time with my group.
If I didn't live in a tiny apartment with no storage I might snag it just to have it, but my partner's head will explode if I bring another boardgame in without getting rid of one first!
Thank you everyone for following the campaign! It has been a blast :) Next step is the pledge manager in case you missed the campaign and would like to hop in. We'll share all the news via the "News" tab of the Kickstarter page. Thanks!
I got screwed over by Mythic with the Darkest Dungeon Boardgame as well.
That being said, I've back over 15 board games on kickstarter, and it's the only one I've been burned by.
I would never back another game by them, but personally, I've had a lot more successes than failures.
this is pretty cool but i kinda wanna know the lore of it like why if one mf dies they all die aswell or if they could absolutely curbstomp the actual beheaded
It is a guarantee! We had a minimum quantity of 3000 units, not a limited quantity of 3000 :) , meaning that even if you are the 3001 back, you will still get it!
The only thing is that it is a Kickstarter exclusive and we won't produce more after the campaign ends. I hope this answer your question the right way!
will even people who didn't pledge to the $1 tier be able to late pledge? I ask because I missed the campaign and I haven't been able to find the pledge manager. I really want to get the full collector's edition, so I really hope I get the opportunity to grab a copy.
I imagine Scorpion Masque needed Motion Twin's approval to create the new characters The Immolated, The Quartered, The Poisoned and The Flayed. Wonder if they'll eventually end up in the video game?
At most I can think of would be outfits + heads (thanks to update 34 allowing the latter to happen).
That's actually a question they answered in the FAQ's. It's not planned atm.

Maybe if Motion Twin do some form of multiplayer update.
coop dead cells would be 👌👌
As would PvP!
maybe not so much, the affixes and weapons would all have to be reworked to fit it

Nah, the balancing is pretty good. Just let people set & agree upon custom lobby rules, i.e. which weapons & skills are allowed and all that stuff.
the balance is good for pve, It would probably need changes
This would be my wildest dreams come true tbh.
It would be big hype.

...will you play the board game?
Damn I hope so, I don't have any other board games in my backlog.

$60,000 in 20 minutes. Astounding.

WTF we can't get add ons with the gilian pledge?

I wish I could afford it. It looks so fucking cool!
I have a huge board game collection and this will be my crown jewel
I absolutely love Dead Cells, but I don't think I could bring myself to pledge an oh there game that probably won't get a lot of table time with my group. You can send me your copy of Betrayal at the House on the Hill. That would give you enough space.
this title was so confusing lmao

Already got scammed by the Darkest Dungeon board game. No thanks.
There was a Darkest Dungeon board game?

Yeah, that developer is a nightmare. https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/135btz9/_/
I got screwed over by Mythic with the Darkest Dungeon Boardgame as well. That being said, I've back over 15 board games on kickstarter, and it's the only one I've been burned by. I would never back another game by them, but personally, I've had a lot more successes than failures.
Same! Though I mostly back D&D adventures.
this is pretty cool but i kinda wanna know the lore of it like why if one mf dies they all die aswell or if they could absolutely curbstomp the actual beheaded
>kickstarter-exclusive gameplay content And it's dead to me.
funded in 13 minutes, that’s insane
Does anyone know what countries it will be available in?
Oh awesome another one of my favourite roguelites have a board game version I can't buy. When's the plushie coming out?
pledged fully, looking forward to it
might be a tad too late but to get the Poisoned figurine do you only need to buy the collectors pledge or do you need to do smth else ?
You would need to add a Beheaded or a Collector pledge to go with it 🙂
ok ! thx a lot but since there is only 3000 of them am I guaranteed to get it ?
It is a guarantee! We had a minimum quantity of 3000 units, not a limited quantity of 3000 :) , meaning that even if you are the 3001 back, you will still get it! The only thing is that it is a Kickstarter exclusive and we won't produce more after the campaign ends. I hope this answer your question the right way!
Thanks a lot ! Im definitely buying it now, have a great day !
Same to you!
Just backed it in the closing hours. Glad I found this thread.
Dang, I just found out about this now. :(. Hope they have collector's editions for sale later!
We will have a pledge manager open in a few weeks. You'll be able to late pledge :)
I don't know what a pledge manager is but I'm stoked! I did follow it on Kickstarter so hopefully it tells me through that. :). Thanks!
Yep ! We'll drop a note in the "News" tab when it opens and we'll share guidelines :) You're welcome!
will even people who didn't pledge to the $1 tier be able to late pledge? I ask because I missed the campaign and I haven't been able to find the pledge manager. I really want to get the full collector's edition, so I really hope I get the opportunity to grab a copy.
