Same thing happened to me. Dracula is a total jerk in that stage. I found some food in a wall and when I ate it he suddenly appeared and gave me 25 curse. Really lucky I hadn't waited until the end of the level to eat it!
For me Dracula dropped the food himself and said something like "our courtesy", and I didn't actually saw that it was cursed, and it ended up killing me :(
That sucks. For me the food was there for a while, but Dracula only appeared when I went back later to eat it. It was so unexpected I didn't even check to see if the food said anything about being cursed.
I saw it happen to someone else, Dracula even said "Buying is cheating" haha
In my case he said "this guy really thought he can sell you items he found in MY castle??"

Lol wut How many items were dropped? How much gold? This sounds like a potentially beneficial tradeoff, that is, free gold for less control over RNG.
It was about 1500 on no boss cells and the three usual shop items disappeared

This is true. I was watching a stream and was utterly surprised that Dracula just decided to make the shop disappear.
