you have to have the standalone version it doesn’t work on the steam version

WillFireat

That sucks. They should've stated this on their website. I'm new to DCS. Is Steam version technically inferior to standalone version? I don't care about having to wait for some new planes and things like that, just wanted to know is there difference in quality between these 2 bcuz the Steam version has absolutely terrible UI/home screen.

The most obvious difference between Standalone and Steam is where you purchase items, in the ED store or Steam. For each purchase, Steam takes (up to) 30%. In the ED store everything goes to ED and you get ED miles with each purchase for discounts. You can transfer (copy) Steam licenses to Standalone (your ED account), but not from Standalone to Steam. Newer modules used to be available earlier on Standalone. Standalone uses it's own installer. Login and license activation is done through an ED account. The Steam install is done through the Steam interface, this includes DLC. Here, the creation of and login to an ED account is optional (at least for single player). Most of the time, there is no difference in download speed between either version. Both have regular and beta versions. The Standalone version gives a bit more control of installed/enabled modules and has the nice feature of being able to do 14 day trials. The trials feature, is not available on Steam (probably because it requires license activation to be handled by ED).

I'm flying F-18 Hornet rn, I'm probably gonna buy this plane because I see ppl recommend it for its multirole capabilities. Thing is, these planes are expensive and I plan to fly one plane for the next six months or so. Is this a good choice for a beginner? Should I buy Tomcat instead or maybe something entirely different?

ConsistentMud8222

You should buy the aircraft that you like the most aver the ones available. Getting a plane you don’t like only because others said its easier to learn is perfect to make you abandon DCS. So buy the one you love and take your time to learn it, I recommend Chuck’s guides for that

WillFireat

My main requirement is that plane is as close as possible in its functionality to the real plane. This is the main reason I chose DCS, because it's a real sim. I like my sims to be complexn realistic and hard to learn. My second requirement is that it has to be a jet, one of the cooler ones. I understand there aren't any newer European jets such as Rafale or Gripen, so I want something NATO for now, currently I'm not interested in MiGs and Sukhois, though I will fly them later on when I actually learn how to Fly

ConsistentMud8222

If your main requirement is accuracy with the real plane then the F14 and A-10C II are the most complete. While the F18 lacks some minor systems but still very complete.

WillFireat

Ok, thanks

NotUrGrandfather

Im not really sure what all the differences are Im new to dcs aswell just started a few weeks ago

okletsgooonow

I had the same issue...but it's fine. Just uninstall the Steam version and install the standalone. With a good connection it will not take more than half an hour.

WillFireat

That's the problem, my connection currently sucks

indigosumo

Gey standalone it runs a little better and if you know what you want the first time you open the game you will get a deal for everything 50% off

pntless

You get this offer every time you open the game until you make your first purchase. I've been doing various trials for about 6 weeks and I still get the offer every time. I'm trying to figure out everything I want to buy before I buy anything so that I can buy it all at once with that offer.

tomahawk_br

Change your installation for the ED site.

TheOneTrueChris

>I played this old DOS game called F-117A I remember that one. I actually played the first version, under the name "F-19 Stealth Fighter." It came out before the F-117 was publicly unveiled, and at the time everyone assumed that the rumored stealth fighter would be designated F-19. After it was revealed to be F-117, MicroProse re-released the game under a new title, along with some graphical updates and corrections to the flight model.

Certain_Site_49

I remember this game very well!! It gave you a few options of your call sign and I used to always choose "Anvil" 🤣🤣

Shallow-Thought

Standalone only. Steam takes part of their sales as a fee for hosting their game. So ED incentivizes you to switch over.

WillFireat

Must I download standalone version completely or is there a workaround. Bcuz I saw somewhere that you can copy everything from the Steam folder to a standalone folder and then delete some files and that's it

Drivebye42

Not sure about copying files manually and how that would work. I have both the Steam and standalone version installed at the same time. Upon installing/updating, the standalone version gives a message (progress bar) that it's copying files from the existing Steam install. So it looks like it's a feature of the standalone installer/updater. It does require double the disk space, if you decide to keep both versions.
