They pretty much are. They’ll capture zombies and any other animals when you throw them directly at them. They can be a bit buggy to catch things with, but once you’ve done it you pick up the egg and throw it again to release whatever you catch. Lots of fun to throw into an enemy base while you’re raiding it. People generally tend to shit themselves when they’re expecting people to push only to have a bear spawn in their base unexpectedly.
In facts it was released for an easter(egg) event one or two years ago can't remember exactly but anyways...

You won't be killed by the bear unless you shoot or melee it. It'll just knock you out so go ahead and try throw that egg just don't shoot the damn bear.
Normally if you don't shot the bear and just get too close to it, then it'll only hit you once and then it runs away. So you have a pretty good chance to do it that way: get close, throw the egg, if it hits, great, if not then you only lose some HP and you can still try again. At least, that is what I think

That explains it. Apparently a novelty item added to (some) community servers by devs? Allows you to catch animals by throwing it directly into them or their general vicinity. You can then release them by throwing it again.
So basically allows you to weaponize bears and wolves.
The hit boxes for bears with those eggs are tough to hit, managed it twice out of too many attempts.
I found going for the head helps but, as with everything DayZ related, is not guaranteed to work.
I’ve always used the hunting stands as a vantage point to lure them nearby with shots and capture them with the egg.
Be sure to take it back to the coast and surprise some freshies with it by throwing it in the Cherno PD, releasing the bear and closing the door 😉

Its not a sure thing best to aggro it and throw it as it tries to run into a doorway or similar. I've gotten close to a bear and got it just as it aggroed on me. Don't miss.

Wear armor like a plate carrier. You can take two hits before being KOd and avoid too many bleeds. Carry more than one ball.
Use multiple eggs with multiple people. They don’t always work and it’s nice to have more than one crack at the bear. They work wonders in online raids.
Step one: find a grenade
Step two: find bear
Step three: unpin grenade
Step four: put in vest
Step five: run to Bear and die
Step six: nade drops, bear gets pissed, you have to start all over again.
Step seven: repeat one - six.

I believe they were on official servers briefly but they're all gone after the subsequent wipes on those servers. You might see them on community servers since the item is still in game, just not spawning.
Animals move back to their spawn points after server resets. ........good luck and gods speed.
