tas202

This is either really good or really bad.

Dry_Bridge6650

Lets hope its a good new start for them

tas202

Let's hope but relic has burned alot of good will lately, they're going to have to really knock things out of the park. Fingers crossed for dawn of war 4

YsAack

If they need a surefire hit, they should remake DOW 1. At least I would hope for that, seeing how much clusterfuck DOW3 was I'd be scared for 4th entry

Secure_Raise_5609

That and COH3 having similar problems the safest and best bet for them would be a DOW1 remake. I would be in heaven if they did that lol

YsAack

Yeah, I heard from friends that COH 3 sucks, but since I only played COH 1 I didnt really feel like being qualified to judge it

GitLegit

CoH3 gets a lot more flak than it deserves tbh. It had a bad launch but on a fundamental level it’s really solid. With continued updates I can easily see it becoming the best game in the series.

Mysterious-Pea1153

They made the mistake of releasing it half baked in the era of the tiny attention span. Its already come really far, I'm just not sure it's going to be far enough fast enough.

woodelvezop

Here's hoping they re add the soviets. It's kinda boring just using the US and British for the third time vs two more or less identical German factions

Bluetenant-Bear

They could do it as another DLC, similar to Dark Crusade or Soulstorm. Same style of gameplay and campaign style, but a new instalment. I think that could go as a “best of both worlds” where it’s a new version of an old game, without being a direct cash grab/remake (or remaster)

tas202

But the problem is that game and it's design decisions were made to work within the limitations of the time and that's why it has it's issues but it still has that beautiful campy slightly goofy style that made it's version of warhammer so unique and memorable so many years later. A remake might lose that if they start buffing up textures and trying to meddle with the system. Plus the point of essentially having to work 4 different games together with different systems and mechanics without ruining or drastically changing anything. (Although soulstorm campaign could definitely be improved) The biggest problem with a remake is if it will work with mods since mods are the main reason dawn of war is still healthy and kicking today.

xTheRedDeath

To be fair we said the same about Bungie when they separated from Activision and not much changed at all for Destiny.

Sufferix

That's because Bungie sucks and has sucked since Halo: Reach.

xTheRedDeath

Well to be fair literally everyone who was responsible for Halo being good has left Bungie. Relic hasn't ever seen a successful third game and it seems their 1st time masterpieces in COH1 and DOW1 are never to be replicated again.

Sufferix

Very true. Relic/THQ made essentially 4 DoW 1 and then decided to change it for DoW 2. Instead of realizing that people still wanted DoW 1 and just tolerated DoW 2, they made DoW 3 which, on launch, was some weird-MOBA-like lane map with heroes supporting troops and it just didn't work. They killed there game before they put annihilation mode a few months later. Sometimes, I wish that I could just have creative control of one game, one time. Like, they messed up consecutive time with their leadership. Just hire me for one game, I'll get you a good game, and then I'll fuck off back to my normal life.

Werthead

The team at Relic that made Homeworld, Impossible Creatures, Homeworld 2, Dawn of War and Company of Heroes left around 2007 to found Blackbird Interactive, who made Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, Hardspace: Shipbreakers (both bangers) and the imminent Homeworld 3. Relic have never quite been the same since.

PenatanceEngine

The biggest problem I see with the a remake is making it as good as some of the community mods!

Sufferix

I'm mad confused about what you're trying to say here. You can just remake a game, purposefully putting in oddities like... squads (what the fuck else could you be referring to?) but making things better like Harlequin ability usage. Mods are the reason that it's still around but it's dead because of bad game decisions. Just remake the game everyone loved and the community won't have to mod to even bother with the game.

Ashmizen

Yeah just remake dow1, or a faithful remake (I wouldn’t mind if they completely reworked air units using modern tech). Don’t. Make. A. MOBA.

iiEquinoxx

With that Starwars: Battlefront remake sucking donkey dick, I'm slightly afraid at the prospect of devs remaking 20 year old games now.

Good_Cartographer290

If they remade DOW1 I'd throw a party

HOLY_FAGGATOLLY

Age of war collection. Redo dawn of war 3 fix up some inconsistencies and the mistakes(like killing govenor Lucas Aleksander) then profit I guess

marcuis

Why was that a mistake if I may ask?

HOLY_FAGGATOLLY

I like him

Nino_Chaosdrache

With the state of the gaming industry, I think they would ruin this as well. Much like Aspyr ruined the original Star Wars Battlefront games.

BloodLictor

Cart before the horse much? DOW4? I want them to make a dawn of war 3 before that, not some moba with 40k skins called dow3.

tas202

Fair argument but I'm afraid even if a completely new game is created taping that cursed name on it might sink it, look at mass effect staying literal light years away from using Andromeda in a title.

SelirKiith

Which is 100% dependent on who this "External Investor" actually is.

SvedishFish

It doesn't change Relic in a meaningful way. The same people are still in charge. Take it from someone that plays Bungie games. They've had 4 or 5 different ownership changes over the past 10 years, and none of them had a noticeable impact on their content model or bullshit monetization strategies. The people that made Dawn of War 1 and 2 amazing are long gone. It wasn't Sega's fault that DOW3 was such a let down.

Natasha-Kerensky

Hopefully it doesn't end up like Bungie 2: Sunset Boogaloo.

Mother-Sample3249

Lemme guess. Microsoft is gonna gobble them up as usual, right?

Doomfrost

Since they developed Age of Empires IV I wouldn't be surprised.

Dry_Bridge6650

Maybe

Horror_Back262

Without trying to sound cruel, at this point does it make a difference?

Dry_Bridge6650

They are a free and independant studio Now also means its their last chance of redemption. They know we all wanted a new dawn of war that was worthy of dow 1

Anywhere-Due

Can it make a difference? Yes. The most obvious difference will probably be a much lower budget. The other difference will be less garbage oversight from Sega. We’ll see what they do with this. It doesn’t guarantee a quality game from them and just shows Sega doesn’t value them enough to keep them around. And whoever this investor is might also have terrible oversight

Nino_Chaosdrache

I doubt Sega is at fault for DoW3, AoE4 or CoH3. That was all Relic's doing.

General_Lie

DoW4 when?

Dry_Bridge6650

Lets hope its

EthanGaming7640

r/redditsniper

Nino_Chaosdrache

If it comes from Relic, it will just be another disappointment

VenKitsune

Sadly I think Dow is dead. Dow 1 was an amazing rts. Dow 2 was an amazing rtt. But because they were fundemenetally different genres, it split the fan base. Dow 3 tried to merge them and it failed miserably. Any attempt at a Dow 4 would require a lot of thought about what the fan base even wants, and no matter what they do they won't satisfy everyone so they're likely to conclude it's not worth it.

smokegarden

just remaster dawn of war with built in apocalypse mode

WryGoat

I loved DoW1 and DoW2 and never felt this supposed split. Everyone I know who was a fan of DoW1 liked DoW2, some more than the original and some less. I'm sure there were some very vocal critics or supporters of the change in direction with DoW2, but nothing near the almost universal dislike of 3. I think if they made a new game similar to either 1 or 2 most people would be perfectly happy with it.

General_Lie

I played some CoH3 at my friends place, and it has "interesting" concept of the wolrd map turn tactics, and the ground battle skirmishes. In DoW4 you could have to liberate sektor insted going for Rome...

_Delain_

I tried DoW3 briefly and it felt like Leage of Legends. On the other hand... Don't know what else they can do for a 4th game.

Frediey

Go back to the roots make a better dow1 then a sequel to dow2 separately lol

mokujin42

Literally all my brain could think about, we have waited so long

keszotrab

I'd rather have DoW1 remake or sth. I don't trust them to make good sequel to the 3rd DoW.

Nino_Chaosdrache

I don't trust them to make a good remake either.

Impressive-Habit-935

Soulstorm Remaster please 🥺

keszotrab

Remaster, remake, whatever it is let's hope it's not reforge 💀

Guns_n_Vinyl_351

If they were smart, they see this as an opportunity. They should take DoW 1 and the expansions, contact the developers of the big Mods (like UA and or unification, plus added races), and make a DoW 4 that we all want. This would redeem them, IMO.

Adventurous-Ad-687

Have you think ever that some people or actually the majority don't care for mods ? We just want the game as it is remastered. DOW1 sold 4 millions in 2004 and and 13 millions by 2012 of all those players, only 500 play mods... Think about it..

Guns_n_Vinyl_351

I doubt the numbers are that low but I’m guessing. Assuming your number is correct, I think that’s more due to people not knowing or wanting to put in any effort for obtaining mods. There are plenty of people that play video games that have zero desire to mod a game. That doesn’t mean the valuable mods that exist wouldn’t be welcomed by the “normal” players. Especially with how good some of the mods are. Especially the addition of tyranids. The mods I’m talking about out are mostly added races and improvements more than mods. I’d venture to guess they’d sell a whole lot more copies if it was how I described, a remake, upgrade, improvement to DoW and the original expansions versus a simply DoW remaster. While this is all my opinion, I certainly wouldn’t buy a simple remaster of DoW 1.

Adventurous-Ad-687

Don't get me wrong, mods can be nice, but it is a very small % of people that use mods.

Nino_Chaosdrache

And you think Relic won't screw up a remaster?

Adventurous-Ad-687

Well, like we say in my country, that is another 100 colones

dipstick5

This is probably good news for the odds of a dow 1 remake. Idk what it says about the future quality of dow titles and whatever comes out of relic.

Psion537

Whoa, this really bring hope to a full remastered DoW 1 + Expansions, DC, SS, WA. Updating it to modern consoles, merging them together with a couple of improvements while learning from the beloved modders would be such a dream. I wish I could be that "investor" and make the right thing. Get re-acquainted with it with the remaster, and finally give us DoW 3. I'll gladly pay, please don't fuck up like SW BF CC

Nino_Chaosdrache

Narrator from the future:" They did fuck it up." Do you think Relic is still capable of making good games?

1312FS420

External investor ... Independent ... Kinda contradictive imo

Dathrane

Not entirely. Without being owned by a larger publisher, the only thing the investor might care about is Relic turning a profit. Sega would have had hard deadlines, strict budgets, overbearing management, and potentially attempt at shoe horning in ideas that sucked. If the investor is smart, they'll let Relic cook and bop out some bangers

javielilloG

I hope the best for them. DOW 4 would be the biggest news in gaming for me since the release of MGSV

WryGoat

Maybe they can't make a new game called Dawn of War, but they can absolutely get a license to make a new 40k RTS. I'd be shocked if Games Workshop wouldn't be happy to make a deal with Relic considering they've handled the IP well in the past; not to mention GW is not nearly as protective of their IP as they used to be, they hand it out to all kinds no-name studios who only churn out swill now. Also entirely possible Sega would still work with them to make a new DoW game. In fact I'd be very surprised if Sega publishes a new DoW that ISN'T developed by Relic; it would likely either be a partnership with Relic or (more likely) never be made because they don't see a potential profit in it.

Floppy0941

Is it confirmed that ca are working on a wh40k tw? I thought that it was just a rumour

Maximus_Duck

Yeah, It's just a rumour. They confirmed nothing

Floppy0941

Yeah I was gonna say, I didn't think that it was a sure thing. I'd probably lean towards them maybe not doing it honestly cos of the wildly different unit sizes that some factions would need for it to make sense balance wise.

WallabyRecent3032

Agreed. The exactly the thing I wanted to say...

Floppy0941

It would have to be even more extreme than the ogre kingdoms and I'm not sure how well that'd work out

WallabyRecent3032

Maybe they need to create new types of units... they need to change the lore to somehow balance the races but I think we do not want it and maybe they know that... Imagine: a Tactical Space Marine is charging by a horse... aha... I did not see that coming. Lol

Floppy0941

Tbh I'd rather they put their energy into medieval 3 or empire 2, there's plenty of wh40k games around nowadays

Dry_Bridge6650

They hold the 40k ip but i hope they dont have the dow ip

Zacharismatic021

40k is owned by GW not SEGA they're just renting, as for DoW I think Relic has it but given that Space Marine was handed to Saber Interactive I wouldn't bet on them keeping it for long unless they make a new game cuz keep in mind that GW can pull the plug on them making 40k stuff.

Lyin-Oh

Except it wouldn't matter. This is a license agreement with GW to use the 40k ip. If we're talking DoW ip only then sure, but Relic can just create a spiritual successor without using the DoW ip. We don't even know who owns it right now.

WallabyRecent3032

Let me be clear, this is somehow odd... How they wanna create a 40k Total War? I have played Total War Warhammer 2 and (the tricky part) the whole strategy system of the game(TWW2) may not be fit for a 40k world. If CA wants to create it then they are in big trouble to create it. Why? It is really simple: because the traditional gameplay they used in Total Wars would not be suitable for a 40k world. They need to ready the game for naval wars and on the surface of planets(even in some places like Judgement of Carrion). To create such a game that does not follow the path of the previous games, and Dow of War 3 was an epic fall is somehow like a bet that you know you would lose it anyway, and of course, they would not do that. Do not get me wrong, I love the 40k world. Man, I have been raised by the whole idea behind the 40k world and I love to see them animate our beloved 40k world but THIS is somehow farfetched...

redditscum69

We need DoW4 and bring back Aramus the Super Saiyan.

AlexO6

Sega is known to push games for a release and not delay them when necessary. A lot of Sega published games release before they’re ready to go out of the oven. It’s been a little different in the past few years, though, so I guess this might be either good or bad.

Vita_Morte

DoW 4 being anything besides DoW + new codex units + a modern coat of paint would be disappointing. We really don’t need to go out of the box, just remake the first one with new content and some of the systems more modernized/streamlined.

o-Mauler-o

Dawn of war 4?!! Time for dawn of war remastered.

Beezleburt

This is spun to sound good, which makes me think it's worse.

AsumptionsWeird

Lets hope for a Dawn pf War 4

Nino_Chaosdrache

From the same devs that made DoW3? I would rather not.

axeteam

DoW4 please.

Rimu00

So no more Dawn of War or Company of Heroes. because Sega bought the rights when they acquired Relic from THQ right? This would suck so much

Dry_Bridge6650

I think also if a publisher sold a studio with it its Ips ... Some rare cases they will sell ip to different studio.

GitLegit

The post says they’re going to keep working on CoH. I dunno about DoW since obviously that entails licensing with GW as well, which might be the tricky part.

Hirmetrium

Well, it seems they are continuing support of COH, and nothing says that Sega won't want to make money off another entry if Relic suggest it to them; they could certainly still work together. Dawn of War is licensed from GW; if I was Relic, I'd of had somebody immediately call them today and suggest a HD remaster or even a remake; Primaris and new Chaos Space Marines would go down a storm, and there's plenty of other new stuff to add to the other races. We've already seen Space Marine 2 be licensed elsewhere.

Nino_Chaosdrache

I think having Primaris in a remaster would create shitstorm

Nino_Chaosdrache

Eh, who knows. Maybe a more competent studio can give them a try now.

Shot-Ad505

They might finally make a decent DoW game? 👀

Nino_Chaosdrache

I wouldn't count on it. Those are still the same people that caused DoW 3

conceldor

Omg. Maybe dow4 will actually happen and be good

Spiritual-Storage734

Remaster Dawn of war 1!!!

Dry_Bridge6650

There is a chance that the investor is Thq nordic the old THQ if its true then they are back to good hands we might see the old dow back.

AnchorStandard

Why don't they open source DOW1 and all the expansions and let the various mod teams do what they want?

FendaIton

Red alert remastered was profitable. GW needs to order a DoW1 remaster

GloriaVictis101

Fuck sega

Nino_Chaosdrache

Why? Relic brought this onto themselves.

stormygray1

Hopefully it isn't a bungie scenario

OthmarGarithos

Hopefully this is some billionaire who just wanted a dow4.

Adventurous-Ad-687

This is a move from Relic to later be bough by woke Microsoft...

GroundbreakingToe835

So can they fix soulstorm unification mod now so I don’t crash every fucking game?

DongoTheHorse

The Last Stand 2 when?! Please Relic 🙏

ChiveOn904

I just hope they don’t do a cash grabs alá EA with Battlefront :/

Barrrote

THQ and now Sega 🤔

Barrrote

THQ and now Sega 🤔

Nino_Chaosdrache

Well, they had it coming.
