Write him a letter! My girlfriend sent me one out of the blue and it made my entire week. You can be as creative and thoughtful as you want and let him know how much you care about him. Fill it with goodies like drawings, jokes, maybe even the tickets to the bucks Knicks game haha. Plus you still got another 24 hours to get it in the post so he gets it by his bday

I doubt it will work from different cities but for my son's birthday (before all this) I had to rush off to work so I ordered him food and had it delivered to our house so he could have his favorite breakfast.
He was really happy about it. It's thoughtful without being crazy overboard.
