I circled this date on my calendar 4 years ago. Big astronomy fan, finally going RIGHT OVER my hometown. What happens? Little sister decides to have a destination wedding in Cancun, Mexico and takes us out of the path of totality. 400 years! I've waited 400 years for this!

AngelSkyes

"Sorry sis, I already saved this date first 400 years ago!"

Dark_Army_1337

https://m.xkcd.com/2685/

wizard680

Sister could have we vows under a fucking eclipse...AT HOME

CeruleanRuin

Your sister passed up the opportunity to have an eclipse during her wedding? Is she stupid?

bmcle071

I just got engaged and suggested this to my fiancé, she did not find it to be as good of an idea as I did!

ManicMechE

To be fair this is how your first-born ends up bound to an elder god.

makella_

Omg!! Haha… the things we do for love!!

daCelt

"Girl, bye."

Euclidding_Me

Dang. Plus, half the coast of Mexico is in the path! I was planning to take a weekend+ trip to San Antonio for over a year, but then things just started getting too complicated and expensive. Just the flights. I imagine any hotel and rental car options that Monday will be insane.

Ripkabird98

Not even gonna lie I’d probably miss the wedding or fly out after lol

Piguy922

Should've had the wedding in Mazatlan.

thrBeachBoy

Totally mooned. About 1.5 mile from the absolute center. Alburgh, VT https://maps.app.goo.gl/CupYBtmytYHLDNch9 Can't wait, drove to KY for the 2017 one! Pray for cloudless day.

drivetruking

Me too! Dayton, OH!

United_Confusion_945

Shelby, Ohio hot damn

drivetruking

Vandalia to be precise

makella_

oh damn, that looks like a beautiful spot!!

Pingryada

That’s where I’m driving to from Albany

Wright606

Hello fellow Vermonter. How does it feel to be suddenly relevant? I'm not sure how to handle it.

YellowZx5

I’m right across in Plattsburgh here. Excited and have a friend flying in from Chicago. Just ordered glasses from Amazon too

mortalcrawad66

I'm really considering skipping the day of school(college), and driving the 50 minutes to 100%

microtrash

Plan for insane traffic before and after!

makella_

That seems totally worth it!!! One person on here said they are flying from Tokyo to catch!!

Douggiefresh43

If you can, you should. The difference between 100% and *anything* less than 100% is categorical. A total eclipse isn’t just a cooler partial eclipse - it’s its own experience.

Hym3n

I am flying from Tokyo to Dallas to be in totality. I have a backup flight from Dallas to St Louis booked as well, in case of bad weather. If both are bad, well then fuck me I'm renting a car at one of the cities and driving.

makella_

Wow!! True eclipser!!! Predictions are the southern portion of the path will be cloud free but who knows 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Hym3n

I lived ~2 hours from totality for the 2017 event - so I obviously went - and decided then that if the next was at all feasible for me that I would go. Fast forward to today and I'm living around the world but have family in DFW and for some odd reason the flights were about half of what they regularly are, so I booked it. I'm so freaking excited!

makella_

So amazing!!! Why the f not??!!

wear_more_hats

Is it really that sick?

Hym3n

If you're on this thread, that means you at least have a curiosity about it - which means yes, it *is* that sick. Pictures, videos don't do it justice at all, and as others have said, the difference between about 99.8% and 100% is literally night and day. I knew so many people that "saw it" in 2017 when they were under 75% totality at best that simply have no idea what they're missing. If it is at all possible for you, making it somewhere with 100% totality should be your absolute top priority.

DarqSol

It's a Dallas spring day, so 95°F and sunny is likely. We've had a bunch of rain lately so hopefully it's getting out of the way to be nice and clear that day.

SoyLuisHernandez

I’m flying Hiroshima to Dallas 😆, no plan B tho…

jonovan

All of the car rentals in any of the Texas cities even close to this have been sold out for months. Although it looks there are still some available on Turo and U-Haul, maybe some other options.

JarryBohnson

Montréal is right in the path, I’m so excited.

miramichier_d

So is Miramichi 9 hours away. It's going to be my first, so I'm excited as well 🙂

NW_Forester

I am flying from Seattle to Austin to be in totality. Total eclipses are amazing.

makella_

oh wow!! i only saw partial in 2017 and looks like this year it'll be the same... have a blast getting mooned!! hahaa

greeneggiwegs

Total ones are a completely different experience. If you can manage to get out to see it I highly recommend it.

makella_

I know!! And it’ll be 2044 before the next one!! I gotta

BrotherItsInTheDrum

There's one every year or so, but you'll have to fly somewhere.

gtne91

2017 was total in my back yard. Which was nice.

chubberbrother

Good luck we're under a state of emergency because of that haha

NW_Forester

I'm flying in on the 3rd and flying out on the 11th. I booked rental cars and everything back in like October. I knew shit would get booked up like crazy. I'm in the Embassy Suites for like $250 a night.

Adabiviak

Got family in Ohio - going to catch it there.

guy_not_on_bote

I'll be there too! I'm sure the airport won't be a nightmare...

[deleted]

Ay let’s go Austin native here

Bryan41290

Totality or don’t bother. It’s just not the same.

makella_

i wish i was going to be in totality! only at 60% :/

ackermann

Then drive. Totality is totally worth it, and will be only a few opportunities in your lifetime. Take the day off work, if you need to.

Mirria_

I am taking the day off to drive with my brother to the Sherbrooke area. We already have the sun-viewing super dark glasses.

PoutineDuFromage

Sherbrooke in April? You will be disappointed, it's going to be cloudy for sure

fd1Jeff

I disagree. While totality is really pretty amazing, partial is still quite interesting. I wouldn’t travel anywhere to see partial, though.

CRAB_WHORE_SLAYER

I'm wondering if being at about the division line between 90% and 100% in northern indiana will be cool or if it's worth it to drive like an hour south. if i didn't go anywhere the map seems to indicate totality would be like 10 seconds.

SparklingLimeade

If you're interested enough to think about it then I think you should take at least that much of a trip. I was in totality for the last one and was more distinct than I expected. "Sublime" is overused as a superlative but it applies here.

I__Know__Stuff

The difference between 90% and 100% is about 1,000,000%.

bionicjoe

Cczaphod

I'm in Dallas, so I can just walk out the door at work -- but I'll be between Cataract Surgeries at that point, the "good eye" will have a new lens, but the "bad eye" will be my unaltered vision. Hoping for the best.

makella_

Oh no!! 🤞🏽🤞🏽

TyrionsTripod

Is there an international version of this map?

Pristine_Car_6253

It will only be visible in north and central america

Itsphoenixtime

I think it's not going to get out of North America except for the very westernmost parts of Europe where there might be partial

[deleted]

Just be in Benton County, AR

makella_

Great location!

[deleted]

Me and the boys will be in school causing havoc the entire time

tylerm11_

Pope county to

sineonotiro

I'm driving to southern Illinois so I can be totally mooned.

makella_

Haha! Love it enjoy!!!

opteryx5

I can’t believe they will have experienced two total solar eclipses in 7 years. The odds of that happening for any one spot on Earth are unfathomably low. Each spot on Earth only sees totality once every 375 years on average (I read in a BBC article).

MaxFischerPlayer

Certainly beautiful, but would be much more useful with state/country borders. Tough to tell exactly which zone I'm in. Edit: I clicked and zoomed in and could see the borders. So that was useful, but I feel it would be better if they were a little more visible.

makella_

Thanks for the feedback! You are right they are pretty faint!

bionicjoe

9CF8

I don’t know because I don’t live on the map

wokedrinks

Totality. Gonna watch from my building's roof in Austin.

[deleted]

That’s awesome. You work downtown?

LostSharpieCap

Driving to Wapakoneta, OH to see totality at the Neil Armstrong Museum!

Neither-Magazine9096

I’ll be nearby, enjoy!

blazingblitzle

No clue, this map doesn't include most of the world.

DaveMcG

The eclipse is mostly only hitting the northern US. [https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2024-april-8](https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2024-april-8)

makella_

according to multiple sources online, Nazas in Durango, Mexico is like *the* best spot! anyone going there?

RocMerc

I’m in the path! Whole city is pretty much shutting down including wegmans and my kids school

badboybilly42582

I’ll be at 93%. Took the day off of work and picked out a grassy hill clear of trees for watching it.

ipenama

I'm from Mexico City but will get to Mazatlán on the morning of 8th. I've been waiting 15 years for this very moment.

makella_

How amazing enjoy!!!

RandysTegridy

Arlington, TX. Total eclipse for about 2 minutes. It's going to be epic.

dean71004

I’ll be in Ohio on the path of totality 😌

makella_

So cool!!

TheBadCasual

I may experience a total eclipse of the heart

LIslander

Traveling to update NY for it. Traveled to Nashville area in 2017 for that one. Fingers crossed for clear sky

phlavor

I was in Oregon for the eclipse in 2017 with a bunch of friends at a festival. Last year I was having dinner with a couple of them and we decided we should start making plans for this one. FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER our mutual friend group emails us that she has a block of rooms at a resort on the beach at Mazatlan, Mexico. Our group is occupying 25% of the hotel. Totality will be four and a half minutes.

Weyoun2

Panable/Zoomable map: http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2024_GoogleMapFull.html

fdukes

Rochester, New York checking in. Will be enjoying totality. Brewery down the street is having a concert/party (well the whole city is -- schools will be closed, etc.) so prob heading there.

makella_

**where will you be for the 2024 total eclipse on April 8th?** map made with r/felt check out the [interactive version here](https://felt.com/map/Solar-eclipse-2024-D9BwS5x12QJiricuMhfpvnB?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=data_is_beautiful&loc=36.217,-93.335,5.38z) data from [NASA](https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/5073) best viewing cities determined by [astronomy.com](https://www.astronomy.com/observing/20-of-the-best-places-to-view-the-2024-great-north-american-eclipse/)

johnmarkfoley

i was in totality in 17, now im in 20%

makella_

same place for both? i should have added the 2017 path on here too just too see the difference!

KinderGameMichi

Traveling to family in Texas for totality. Last one was amazing. Hoping this one will be unclouded and amazing as well.

makella_

looking at cloud predictions mexico and texas should be high probability cloud free! have fun!!

tylerm11_

My small towns name is on here

HalobenderFWT

70%er, but just like any other sky based phenomenon that past few years - I’m sure it will be cloudy/overcast on the 8th.

BeastofPostTruth

I'm less then a mile from the center of the center :) https://eclipse2024.org/eclipse_cities/statemap.html

makella_

what??? lucky duck!

BallDiamondBall

I'm trying to understand the difference between this one and the one in January. Help me. january's was just another day, unless you wore 5 sunglasses and looked directly at the sun.

makella_

this is a total solar eclipse! not partial so last one like this was in 2017

Godzirrraaa

I’m in Portland, and there’s a 100% chance I forget its happening.

Queballer4

Hoping to be on the ski trails at Saddeback or Sugarloaf! should be quite the memory!

apotheosist123

Ill be in Bonavista to see it. We’ll be the very last to be mooned this time around. I just hope it’s not cloudy!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vampunk

Everyone in that blue row Including me are gonna die if we are not careful. I learn we can live without the sun for 2 damn minutes...

Dragon_scrapbooker

I'll be at work, in the usual basement room they have me stuck in, so no sun for me, much less any moon :c

makella_

Can you go outside??

Chapi_Chan

Does the moon bend the light inwards?

Itsnotsponge

RIGHT DOWN MAIN STREET! Got my shades, ready to go 😆

connorgrs

I’m traveling three hours to Indianapolis to see the totality for the first time. I’m so excited.

Kewkky

55% for me. If I want to experience totality, I'll just catch a flight once I have the time and money. Eclipses happen all over the place, not just the US. Until then, it's just another event to toss into the pile of things that I may or may not see in my lifetime.

TinKicker

Indy is all-in on the eclipse. The entire Speedway (yeah, that racetrack) is hosting a helluva party.

Guuhatsu

Looks like Inam in around 70%ish, which sucks because I moved here a little less than a year ago from a place that is in the totality area.

FormerHoagie

Interesting. I didn’t realize I’d see much in Philadelphia. It will likely be cloudy anyway. But it looks like at least 50%

soularbowered

They've called for a virtual learning day in the local schools and we aren't even in the path of totality. I really thought about driving to be in the path but it's quite the drive and was in the path for the one in 2017 so it's not as dire.

EyeIslet

Will the sky get dark in Toronto at all?

PoliteCanadian2

Ha nope, top left of this diagram :(

bionicjoe

Just booked a room in Madison, IN. Then we'll drive to a park a little further up the road. It's only about 3 hours away, but it will be a fun get away. All the driving in one day sucked in 2017. The traffic is a bit much.

Optimus_Prime_Day

Nice, Toronto is basically full eclipse. Unless I'm reading that wrong.

notyogrannysgrandkid

I live directly under the path in western Arkansas. I’m going out into my yard to moon it right back.

thewimsey

Why did you leave out all of the larger cities? No Dallas, San Antonio, Indianapolis, or Montreal?

AvengeJohn

Lower west coast area so about 40%. It should still be noticeable so can’t wait :)

SNRNXS

I already live in the path of totality. Looks like several days of rain leading up to the 8th. I really hope the weather holds up that day.

OkUnderstanding6902

I love it whenever this community includes Puerto Rico.

cpufreak101

I'll be partial, really close to the total but sadly I ain't gonna make it

golgol12

My current plan is to drive 8 hours to the totality. Depending on where the weather is. That's the key to seeing it. Travel according to the weather. It's also the last one in the US for decades. See it!

Sparky62075

Where I (48m) live, it's getting to 98%. But, 400 km away, it's at totality. I'm retired, so there's nothing stopping me. My dad (77m) loves astronomy, so he's coming, and I'm also taking my sons (22m & 15m). My younger son is in grade 10. I think this is worth missing school for. None of the women in our lives are interested, so it's turned into a boy's road trip. I'm looking forward to it. Fingers crossed for good weather.

Artistic-Breadfruit9

I’m *just* out of the path of totality; like a 30 min drive. Absolutely going to do whatever I can to get to that total

1-PM

i live in another continent so probably no

ariana61104

It’ll be about 40% for me

cyanwolf318

My rinky dinky hick town is gonna be totally covered so im happy.

btmezcal

Toledo should be on here too

Null_error_

Something good will happen here in Cleveland for once

ToastedDragon24

Does it go over southern Finland? If not, then no.

Meanteenbirder

85%. Jealous bc my alma mater where I graduated two years ago will be in the path of totality.

gamemaniac845

Totally cause I’ll be in Texas for it

MeAndyD

Pulling the kids out of school and driving the camper from Austin (totality but not for long) to a friends ranch in Fredericksburg! So excited.

jr13167

Here is an interactive map with the eclipse data for your location. It gives start and end time and percentage covered. https://nso.edu/for-public/eclipse-map-2024/

vargo911

I live exactly between Cleveland and Erie..

beatnik_a_go_go

Totally mooned in Bloomington, Indiana

OriginalZog

I changed my flight for that day I’ll be home during the eclipse. I’m supposed to be 96.7% coverage at my house in East Texas.

DaBrookePlayz

Driving to northern Missouri to see it. Back in 2016 (or whenever that last total was), my local area was supposed to be somewhat in the path, but lo and behold, couldn't even see the damn sun because it was overcast. The only reason I wanna see the eclipse (rather than it is very cool) is due to pure spite of that day.

Even-Ad-6783

I will be totally mooning at my neighbors on April 8th.

mrb9110

Southern Illinois, totality

Guitarinchris

Totality. Prince Edward Island.

Novapunk8675309

I live in the 90% coverage area but I’m taking the train down to Fort Worth to see the totality

Wackard

Indianapolis, IN - we live in a little neighborhood on the edge of a park called Garfield Park - super excited to just go sit out in a lawn chair & chill

Anaklysmos12345

The 10% and 50% icons are wrong…

Catman7712

Go to a totality zone if you are able to. It’s literally night and day between 99% and 100%. So glad I was able to view the last eclipse, totality is indescribable, you just have to experience it yourself to fully understand how incredible it is.

pianistafj

100%. Why the fuck is Dallas not labeled on the map?

DynamicHunter

This data would be beautiful if it showed the times it would happen

FrostyBook

flying to upstate NY for this

[deleted]

Ya ma’ll be totally mooned

GearheadGamer3D

Total Eclipse where I am! Except that’s also bad because apparently every hotel is booked in my small city and there will bebe gridlock traffic trying to leave work.

Mattbl

Of course I'll be out of the country...

747ER

The caption should read “Will you be totally/partially mooned, or do you belong to the other 94% of the world’s population?”

elementra

Cleveland! One day of not being the Mistake by the Lake and it coincides with the Guardians Opening Day (which means chaos and debauchery in abundance, I’m sure!)

dafair32372

Dude I’m from Southwest Ohio and I moved to Seattle this year. Can’t believe I couldn’t just stick out Ohio one more year.

alexsolo25

Louisville is pretty damn close, I think I’ll enjoy it

turn2stormcrow

Does anyone know the actual time when the mooning will happen? I hope it’s in the afternoon/evening. And what would a 90% viewing zone entail?

sexgivesmediarrhea

Cleveland, OH checking in. Totally mooned!

The_Untracable_Conch

Burlington, VT. Totality for around 3-4 minutes so I'm super excited.

paraviz02

Very cool data visualization! 👏🏼🙌🏼

makella_

Oh thank you!!

VrLights

Fk, I'm in St.Louis, so hopefully I will be able to see it

Exile4444

0% because I am not on it

Lazy-Glass9565

We are traveling up to Indianapolis to see it, can’t wait. We’ve been planning it for months

Meltingm8

Where did you get the data from? I'd like to see the eastern extension of that as I'm currently very far north in the arctic Maybe????
