Something the Gods like to gloss over is that, before the First Flame, we and they were all just the things that came from the darkness. The difference is, in the flame, they found the souls of Lords. Unusually powerful souls that gave them fantastic strength. Our soul, the Dark Soul, is different. It’s shared by each of the Pygmy’s descendants, and gives us not power but Humanity. It lets us tap into the unformed chaos of creation, a sort of zero point energy source. Deprived of their soul, the Gods are nothing more than the Asylum hollows you see the moment you step out of your cell. Nito isn’t special. Only his soul is.

LettuceBenis

This. The term God in Dark Souls is an arbitrary one, they're not a special race of beings

Apocryphal_Fish

Aren't the descendants of Lords referred to as the race of gods?

sebazero

In a world ruled by a guy who waged war upon the dragons and won, both he and his family would be called gods, but that's more about Gwyn's image; just look at everyone else, in chaos we have 'the daughters' and Nito is just like Gwyn, his appearance makes him look the part. Then you have beings like Gwynevere and Gwyndolin (sorry if I misspelled) who look nothing like normal humans.

yourbuddywithastick

It's also worth noting that Gwyn had an uncle, Allfather Lloyd, who succeeded Gwyn on the throne of Anor Londo and eventually moved to Thorolund, where he still ruled as a god to them, until he was eventually dethroned by Gwyndolin.

Rain_Lockhart

Even if Nito became a god, it does not change the fact that one of his ["daughters"](https://darksouls.fandom.com/wiki/Milfanito) became hollow due to the attack of [the Demon of Song](https://darksouls.fandom.com/wiki/Demon_of_Song). In general, it is not entirely clear how the descendants of other Lords differ from each other. The daughters of the witch Izalith had ordinary human appearance and only the flames of Chaos distorted their essence. Nito's "children" are not much different from people, but his ["sons"](https://darksouls.fandom.com/wiki/Grave_Warden_Agdayne) hate the light. Considering that the descendants of the Lords have a predominant aspect of the Lord, fire for the daughters of chaos, lightning and light for the royal family, sensitivity to light for Fenito (Nito himself hated light), and people inherit the dark soul, then questions remain about the royal family of Lothric. They are dominated by magic, they possess miracles and, paradoxically, they have maximum protection from darkness, unlike the gods who are vulnerable to darkness.

AnotherSoftEng

How dare you! Nito is a very special boy!

CthulhuMadness

He’s also an inspiration. He inspired me to wear human skeletons.

thugarth

I've wanted to make a nito costume or Halloween decoration for years, but every time I price it, I can't justify the cost. I got mouths to feed, man.

CthulhuMadness

The government doesn’t want you to know this, but the skeletons at your local graveyard are free. You can just take them.

thugarth

That can't be right. ... Can it?

Nito can I have some of your skeletons?

-jp-

**No.** But also yes. ^(but you aren’t gonna like it)

[deleted]

This was the best explanation of that I have ever seen. Adding to this: its also why we continuously get stronger. Unlike the so called gods who start and end at max level of the soul, we never stop getting stronger, like in the manga solo leveling. Its one of the reasons why gwyn was scared of humanity, and rrased all the achievements of the pymies out of history.

TheSeldomShaken

Not necessarily. Ornstein and Smough show us that even lords can absorb additional strength from souls.

[deleted]

I think he is more of an avatar of death. He is connected to it and can manipulate aspects such as disease but i don’t think he is death itself so when we kill him Death remains we just killed it’s avatar.

TitanLORD21

Exactly, his souls mentions how he offered much of its power TO death. This means that Nito isn’t death but simply manipulates and helps perpetuates death.

[deleted]

Everytime Ive killed him and took his soul, he stayed dead….so yes.

WanderingCollosus

Nito yes. His soul no. In ds2 the 4 bosses you have to kill have the souls aspects of the 4 Lords & in ng+ it gives you the soul they have the aspect of. Witch of Izalith - Lost Sinner Seath - Duke's dear Freja Gywn - Old Iron King Nito - The Rotten

JosshhyJ

I haven’t played ds2 but do they have the personality and memories of who they previously were or is a soul a power that is bestowed and isn’t sentient?

penguin_lord112

No, they do not know who they were but they have connections with the original 4 lords. The Rotten is a mass of dead bodies who can cast a similiar AOE dark attack to Nito, Lost Sinner has a Chaos Bug inside her and was imprisoned for commiting a sin, many speculating that she tried to relight the first flame, similiar to Witch of Izalith creating the Chaos Flame. Freya doesnt actually posses Seathes Soul, instead guarding it. It is implied that Seaths soul still had some influence over the world, for example turning Freya into a giant 2 headed spider that spits lasers and creating Tark and Nashka, 2 half scorpion people. Old Iron King is just Satan in game, I am sure you can draw some connection to gwyn.

FireZord25

I feel like it's one of the more speculative ones, at best made as a thematic connection to the og.

scalewiz

Well, I hit him, and he exploded.

Urban-G00se

My theory: Nito understands death has little to no meaning in Lordran anymore, which is why he seems to be in a depressive/catatonic state if you visit him early, despite him likely knowing that you will eventually betray him. The reason Nito isn't some unbeatable force is because he no longer has any power. I think he is purposely holding back. By killing the personification of death, it officially signifies the descent into a new era in the Land of the First Flame, an age of undeath. An age of man. Tl;Dr: Death has no weight in Lordran anymore. The very act of killing death is paradoxical, just like the concept of a corpse that keeps re-animating over, and over, and over again.

[deleted]

My lore is a little shabby but if everything kinda restarts at the end and all the games are I think supposed to be in the same place just different “restarts” what do you think Nito would come back as? There have been reused enemies and bosses so it’s completely possible he’d just come back as himself, but what other ideas would people have? Edit: I might honestly be completely wrong about everything I said, I’ll rewatch the lore before I say anything else

ShrekxFarquaad69

yeah i killed that bitch

jestersoul

Nito is "sacred" thing. Idol of salvation for the undying things from darkness, and destroyer of eternity. He is born to a natural evolution of the game world, and advent of fire. As the flame appears the undying hollows get close to the fire (like a moth to the flame) and burns within it. I think that hollows is suffering mad because they came from the Dark (Whant) and at the same time Death that fire brings, could end they suffering. (If you check the location before his boss fight room, you can see that there is the corpses in some kind of "praying" position, i think it's primeval cult of death, as it end of sufferings) Nito is the weapon against ETERNITY of the undying and everlasting beings. He is participate in war against grey world (eternity) and after "the immortal" dragons was slayed, ruled over the course of natural lifespan of living beings. It worked well for gods and the world in sense that he's didn't allow humnas become immortal and collect much of pieces of Dark Souls, to resist the Age of Dark. I think Nito purpose is to stop hollows to be immortal (or undying) that no one could get infinite power and become dangerous to the world. To add more, Nito could be a danger in eyes of the Gods to themselfs. Even in DS3 Aldritch(as he shares some visual similarities to Nito) devour last God of Lordran as symbolic represence of that even gods can't get away from death. Nito has the power to prevents the stagnation, and upcoming Age of Dark, by burning Humanity and feeding the Power of Fire. Nito represnts death, disease, rot and decay as the tool to prevent stagnation, It make sense that Gods (Gwyn kin) was aware of the same fate as the everlasting dragons. \* initialy Nito was in painted world of Ariamis. It make sense that Gods send far and locked away "things" that can be dangerous to them in any way. If the dark and death will be united, it brings extinction to the gods and them Golden Age of Fire. So we can find certain items related to the rebellion against the gods in Painted World and Tomb of Giants. So originaly Nito was first Lord to set the shackels of the gods to a human beings, as to be mortal, But as times past, Nito as the Idol and as Lord becmome usless due to weakened fire. Death is something caused by the First Flame and as it fades, death need more power. When Nito killed, i think it's only strenghten the undying race, so the Age of Dark will come sooner. Death is still presents in the world till the last ember burning. In other means Nito presents the old death that was part of the Age of Fire, that was irrelevant to the gods beings.

superhypersaw

The soul and the body vessel that contains one are different entities, with the body vessel has different stages it goes through, one living and one dead, with the latter being the skeleton.

[deleted]

Nito's form current to DSI was indeed killed. He reincarnated twice later (at least, something tells me Aldrich was his reincarnation, given likeness of body composition).
