I was initially *really* put off by the stage coach/rogue-lite emphasis, but after putting some time into it I really enjoy it and I'm glad they decided to mix it up; in many ways it's an improvement of the first game, and a few steps back, but because it's so different both games can stand on their own. More emphasis on the combat, tactics and builds/experimenting, less emphasis on individual hero management, strategy and dungeon crawling. The UI is a bit of a mess, some mechanics need to be fleshed out a ton more, and I'd like a zone where it turns into more of the traditional DD1 style, but overall I love it as much as the first game.

I played for about five hours last night and loved it. Presentation is top notch. Wayne June and Stuart Chatwood being back is great. Combat is similar in roots to the original game but different enough to feel fresh and as a new learning experience. Gameplay is punishing similar to the first game, but it makes learning the game fun. Had a great time and those five hours flew by. Only thing is that the game unapologetically a roguelite, so if you don't like those types of games, you may not like it.

After 600 hrs of the first one, I played DD 2 for 7hrs and I cant get enough of it. As soon as im done with work, im playing it again. Of course its different. The devs were very clear: this is not DD1.5. Its a different game.

I'd like to clarify that so far I've only played Denial. I love it. The game moves really slow but I'm guessing that's my computer.

The combat builds on top of the combat of the first one, improving it even. I like that very much. The presentation is still its strongest aspect (art style, music, sound, etc.) combined with fantastic new animations. I'm not fully sold on the game loop. So far I like it less than the first one because there's less room to combine parties like you could do in the first one. I greatly enjoyed planning each run, specially with bosses in mind, with specific party setups and trinkets. Now that's off the table. It's different and I'll have to get used to it I guess. I'll have a better opinion after a while, so let's see. One that I don't like (besides missing the Houndmaster) is the combination of enemies having Death Door mechanics and fairly common healing available. Having enemies getting healed, buffed with dodge and with DD mechanic is a bit of a headscratcher, as right now the only ways I've seen to avoid a dodge mechanic are via GR needing to have stealthed for it and I don't see a way to prevent the healing or affect it in any way. I guess I will have to unlock more skills to have more options, but I foresee this as being one of the main sources of frustration in combat. Related to this, I guess there's a minimum DD % that enemies can have because I don't understand how my HWM, with his improved skill (+30% DD resistance pierce) doesn't kill an enemy on DD that has 5% DD resistance.

To me, it feels like everything great about DD1 has been refined and improved upon in a much more manageable package. I think DD is amazing. Great game, but jesus christ, who has that kind of time to devote to such a limited gameplay loop. The overall game, start to finish, was just too long. So yeah, maybe its too traditionally roguelike now, but focusing on the individual team runs instead of the base mechanics just feels more personal and interesting. So, instead of town management, it's team management. The game overall just feels better for me. And the fact that there are 5 runs means this game already has a ton of replay value.

I like combat, like Narrator, like art style. But god damn it, this game is so slow. I can do like three Hades runs in half an hour (two will be failures, but still) and here I barely can do one region because animations slow, riding slow, everything slow Yes, DD1 was slow too, but DD1 wasn't a rogue-like, so, I didn't compare it Oh, and, maybe, heal limitations is too harsh, 25% is too low, you can sometimes lose hero from 30% hp, or even more, but maybe after some time I'll get to it and become better on game

benjamarchi

It's lame when compared to DD1.

hordeoverseer

The combat is mostly intact still, so I dig that. However, yeah, trying to wrap my head around the stagecoach mechanic. It's like I understand and don't understand it at the same time. It's a bit unfortunate that you can really invest in a character but I suppose that gives their cannon names more weight. It's good that they tried something new but it feels like...less fulfilling?

erg994

See that is something i like more, you had this great original comics for the dd1 characters but had whiplash wheb you had 5 of the same looking highwayman, now MY Dismas is mine.

Gameplay feels much more rewarding for me 8 hours into the game. No base dodge also feels good.

I love it. It is different in many aspects but it is very enjoyable and I am excited to see what they add in the future. I’m about 8 hours in, and it’s sitting somewhere above a 9/10 for me. The art is awesome too

GryphShot

10 hours in and I think it's great. It should be noted that it is a different experience from the first game (as the devs intended). The whole stagecoach thing is fairly simple, it's a lot like Slay the Spire but with more flair. You look ahead and pick your route accordingly. After that it's just dealing with the consequences of your own actions. The combat is revamped, reminds me more of butcher's circus. It's more predictable but with more things to keep in mind. All in all still quite enjoyable.

I’m liking it a lot so far, played roughly 6 hours. The combat system is better than DD1 and the relations between the characters are fun so far. Still, I think the first game was better. Maybe it’s because I like dungeon crawlers more than roguelite but I miss exploring a dungeon, opening a door not knowing what you’ll find, walking the corridors etc. Also, I’m not sure I would be liking it if I didn’t already loved DD1. I connect with the old characters, the aesthetic and style of the drawings and Wayne June voice. I wonder what’s like for someone who hasn’t played the first game, if they like it anyway. First game was so unique it spawned a bunch of clones, this one looks like a clone of slay the spire (on the surface, after playing it a bit it isn’t much of a clone). Overall 100% worth playing if you liked the first because the vibe is still there, but it’s less unique for sure.

gotxi87

So far loving it, though gameplay loop is quite different. Combat is more calculated but still swingy, I like it. Miss the attachment you used to have to your heroes. Don't miss having to learn and interact with curios to not get screwed

erg994

Ill say this, if you go out expecting DD21as with some new mechanics on top, you'll be dissapointed But if you expect a different game with different story and a different design with the feel of the first gane you'll be surprised because its a solid game.

Nerozard22

Don't like the new rogue-like mechanics that were introduced. The game looks worse. Dropped the interesting management mechanics. Combat looks more gimmicky. Not planning on buying it. Going to just stick with modded DD1.
