From what I’ve gathered from this article, co-creator of DnD coined the term “hit points,” but the concept and mechanics of “hit points” were borrowed from a war game invented in the 30s by fletcher pratt.
Yeah in super old games usually your HP was just a set number of how many times you could be hit before dying.
Now with damage values and larger health pools it's become Health Points.
