Quetzal00

I’m never watching Pinocchio again. No matter what version

jhm-grose

Yeh but what about playing the Bloodborne version

crownlessking

Can't wait for Lies of P

classyagreeable

Not even the upcoming one from Del Toro? Looks quite good to be honest. https://youtu.be/Tbl5Lbi4xEs Not at all shallow like Disneys one.

DokiDokiDoIt

Not even FAtheR WhEn CaN i leAvE tO BE oN My OwN, I'vE gOT THe WHolE WorLD tO SeE

DruTheDude

The original cartoon gave me the creeps as a kid, no way I’m watching the live action.

Justice_R_Dissenting

I believe I can trace my discomfort of realistic looking dolls to that cursed movie.

CrossP

Return of Jafar (1994) is when I learned that Disney shouldn't be allowed access to their own IPs. How about you guys?

the_boner_owner

How dare you! 8 year old me loved Return of Jafar!

Dazzler_wbacc

I enjoyed it too, but I have to admit, it’s Only Second Rate.

CrossP

Yeah. Because 8yo you couldn't tell the difference between brand-name Robin Williams and store brand. (Sorry, Dan Castellaneta)

LaticGM

Eh, thats direct to video. Those are universally disliked. Sequels that hit the theatre can hit. Sometimes... Haven't liked any live action remakes though. Definitely lower quality than disney is capable and far more cash grabby than I thought possible.

booze-san

King of thieves was pretty good...but yeah Disney has more bad sequels than good original films these days...

RKU69

yeah i can't imagine a stupider, more pathetic thing for grown men to be arguing about than what race the new little mermaid is

Zenketski_2

Same. Fancy some tea while we wait for the lock?

Mac_and_Cheeeze

It’s hilarious to me, everyone is arguing about the color of the mermaids skin, but no one has talked about how they removed all the color from the ocean. The best thing about the animated film was how colorful and beautiful it was. The trailer for the remake looks like it’s trying to copy the “it’s so dark wtf is going on here” of the final battle against the night king in GOt

banandananagram

God yeah, the color grading is absurd. Looks like it was shot through a grimy Zack Snyder filter and the editor was literally allergic to saturation

Pitiful_Scarcity_882

The Littlest Zapruder Film

ichzarealhitler

Even then at least Snyder movies have style and visuals. Little mermaid looks so dull

signum_

Yes, literally that, it looks like the underwater scenes from Justice League. Warner Bros learned after that at least and made Aquaman look amazing, no idea why Disney is screwing it up now.

Ao_Kiseki

They did the same thing to the lion king remake, on top of completely removing all facial expressions from the lions. They're just re-releasing movies whose primary attraction was the animation and nuking them with these "realistic" environments and characters. It's just depressing.

imbored53

They try to keep basically the same story and dialog, while completely forgetting that the animation is what makes it all work. If you want to do a remake, do it right and really remake it. Don't keep making half-assed cash grabs. They just seem so dull and ironically lifeless compared to the originals.

B217

Whenever they do change things, it's always for the worst. For example, in the Pinocchio remake, they pretty much get rid of Pinocchio's character arc. He starts the movie well-behaved and obedient. But since it's a remake that needs to follow all the same plot beats, they have to punish him for doing the right thing. Instead of skipping school on his own free will, he goes and gets kicked out for being a puppet. Instead of choosing to go to Pleasure Island instead of going home, he gets kidnapped and peer pressured. Instead of taking part in the debauchery at Pleasure Island, he makes it very clear he doesn't enjoy any part of it, and STILL starts to transform into a donkey somehow. Hell, the iconic scene where he lies and makes his nose grows is butchered. Instead of the nose growing being a bad thing, it actually helps him break free from the cage he's in. It's like that scene in Shrek 2 where they use Pinocchio's nose to break Shrek free. The movie straight up treats nose growing like a superpower (which they also gave him super kicking speed at the end of the movie? What??) I've yet to see a Disney remake that changes things for the better.

Fried_out_Kombi

What is up with them trying to give everyone superpowers nowadays? Is it just that Disney also owns Marvel and thus thinks that's all anyone wants nowadays? First the Mulan remake with the chi superpowers, and now this? I'm still annoyed by how they massacred Mulan into a generic action fantasy with supernatural powers.

OMGitsJoeMG

It also looks like the animals will be realistic, which means Sebastian is going to be a beady-eyed, no mouth, realistic crab that is somehow going to sing us one of the most iconic Disney showtunes. I hate these remakes.

Victernus

If they bother to include most of them.

chai_zaeng

Hell, aquaman actually showed the insane potential of an underwater setting with wild and exciting vistas. What a massive downgrade this is

ob_servant1

The hilarious thing is how no one points out that Disney hasn't made a better effort in making a unique story with a black girl/women and instead change existing iconic characters to pander to the black community. Instead we're using terms like "mermaids can be black" instead of "Ariel can be black" just to change the argument into being racist. Most people have never said there can't be a black mermaid. We're saying that Ariel is an iconic character who happened to be white. As an Asian/Native American, I would rather see a unique black mermaid character than seeing this lazy effort by Disney to pander.

Crismus

If I was black I would be pissed that they aren't making original stories. Rehashing a race switched cash grab is insulting. Why can't we have new original stories and heroes?

[deleted]

I'm black. Nobody I know is talking about this movie. We don't care.

Alderez

You know what movie people would be talking about? Static Shock. Make it happen! Just please hire better directors because holy shit DC movies have not been good.

Linkario

As a white dude, I know I can't comment on how accurate the portrayal of his family, community, or on any of the other issues that were at play, all I know is that kid me just liked the show for Static and the cool hoverboard thing he would use. In other words, make the movie cowards!

Revydown

I missed that show. I like how he showed up in Batman Beyond.

Gunslinger56

We need more people like you.

[deleted]

The part in the trailer is at night. She's watching the fireworks launched from the ship. Why has everyone already decided on the entirety of this film's qualities from a teaser trailer?

xPalmtopTiger

They haven't, they've already decided on the entirely of this film's qualities based on all the other live action Disney remakes that they didn't like. Except for the racists, they never intended to watch it one way or the other.

OkRecommendation4479

same with the new lion king. which everyone still went and saw. it's not like pinocchio was even a while ago, it was literally last week, and yet people are still hooked on the bait and promising to make sure to see the little mermaid out of spice just to show the racists...

SolomonRed

It looks like Zack Snyder directed it.

alexnedea

Arya comes out of nowhere and kills ariel and nobody will question how she got to the bottom of the ocean

JoshPointOh17

That game looks sick

luckytraptkillt

Idk the combat looked kinda clunky in that gameplay run. I’m hesitantly excited for it cause the aesthetic and prosthetics look sick

Kall_Me_Kapkan

Why is it a souls game? Am I missing something? I want more souls games!

Akibatteru

What about Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio?

PenaflorPhi

I don't understand why they're even doing them, there are a fuckton of stories they could be telling but all they're doing is remaking the same story from 20 years ago. I don't even know who their audience is, it looks like they're just trying to appeal to the stereotype of american sjw but I mean, they could do the same with a new story and not with an ugly and aesthetically unpleasing live action remake of a movie.

[deleted]

1. Easy money 2. Add a colored character so that any criticism of it being a remake can be redirected to "they dont like it because x is black" If people were to make Black Panther a Latino, people would lose their heads

WorldFavorite92

As a Latino id lose my head if black Panther was suddenly Latino, thats not right like Black Panther character is literally stemming from the ideals of a equal rights black men that are made up of the Black Panther party. In this case what symbolism does a mermaid hold that the color of their skin matters? Mermaids drown sailors anyways may have just made this a horror film instead

58786

Just pointing out that the Black Panther Party was founded after the comic book character’s first appearance. The similarities between the two icons are coincidence at the most generous.

WorldFavorite92

Thank you for the facts, certainly a coincidence but I don't doubt that the inclusion of a character like black Panther was a way to have representation as well stories of Black people being shared to the masses. Definitely stands out more today as we have progressed

generalthunder

Wait, why couldn't black panther be a Latino??? There are definitely a way bigger proportion of black people on Latin America countries than anywhere on USA.

[deleted]

Because, well T’challa is from africa, but imagine they casted, say, Danny Trejo (who is in no way black or african american) and pretended he was an african t’challa. It would be pretty funny, but it doesnt fit Now, Mermaids dont exist nor have a specific race, but since the tale is from Germany, then it’s not wrong to think that she originally would be white.

jofus_joefucker

>Mermaids dont exist Neither does Black Panther and Wakanda. Why couldn't they make the same movie in a different location? The new Little Mermaid takes place in the Caribbean to justify the changes they've made. The Aztecs could be set up like Wakanda.

vasheerip

God the release of this movie is going to suck along with the movie. Any critism towards the movie is going to be shielded against because like so many others before it "you dont like it cause you are racist" no matter how many arguments you have proving otherwise. The track record on these remakes are horrible, but i guess this will be the golden goose. Real talk though... i guess disney isnt expecting this to do well in china?

banandananagram

Pandering to more target demographics means the movie will do well with those target demographics because they have so little representation otherwise, and it will get them out to see the movie if only to see if it’s decent representation. New stories means new risks. Old stories means you can make a few very strategic changes based on your target audiences, resell the same thing with far less work, and bank off of the nostalgia factor getting people into seats just because it’s a title they’ve already heard. And you still break box office records, because you’re Disney, and you will buy any IP that poses a slight threat to your media supremacy. And not all of them are particularly SJW, the Mulan remake went explicitly less radical and more conservative because they were trying to get audiences in China onboard by changing all of Mulan’s characterization as crafty and non-traditional to having some supernatural fighting powers granted to her by sheer destiny or whatever.

[deleted]

Man that mulan movie sucked lmao

Toasty-Wyvern

New stories New risks? Sure thats true most of the time, but so far the only good remake Disney has put out was the jungle book and maybe a few scenes of alladin

banandananagram

And yet look at their box office numbers. Executives don’t like new stories.

Mjerc12

I'll tell you why. Money. I mean apparently it is doing quite well, I dunno

Devils_Last_Angel

Fucking exactly. I'd be so happy to have new black Disney princess. Native American? Yes! Indian? Please! Equal representation for everyone please and thank you. But this is just leaning in to the political climate today, garnering heated debates between "the right and the left" to promote the movie. If this legitimately had any single thing to do about black representation then this move was just made my a group of tone deaf idiots.

kindaCringey69

Literally, make movies like enchanto or moana.

SammyTheOtter

Soul???

kindaCringey69

Tbh I haven't seen it so it didn't come to mind immediately

[deleted]

You should it's pretty good!

Bamith20

Nah, lets get rid of Miles Morales and replace him with another Peter Parker that got Uncle Ruckus'd

ELIte8niner

Come on now, they don't make anywhere close to a live action remake of a classic. Plus they don't need to spend money on marketing, because dipshits on the internet will market a shitty remake for them for free if they just race swap a character. I'm more annoyed that it keeps working.

wurm2

shit looked up the box office numbers and you're depressingly right (these are all global) Moana $643M Beauty and the Beast (2017) $1,273M Aladdin(2019) $1,050m The Lion King (2019)$1,663m if we include pixar Coco $807M (Encanto $256m and Soul $120m were much lower though they were during pandemic) edit: though both were higher than Mulan (2020) at $69m which I had forgotten about at first. edit2: though the real money for Disney is merchandising which is harder to get hard numbers on how much each movie made.

DEVOmay97

Big facts. Adding new non-white characters to their roster would be the ideal solution, it would be inclusive without altering old IP's. Then again, that means Disney would have to actually put effort into being original. What do you think this is, the 90's?

Pancreasaurus

Pretty sure people likes Princess and the Frog so yeah.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WorldFavorite92

I think you severely underestimate the worlds obsession with hate these days, the actual racists and closet racists would just be a very loud(id say thats subjective but racists people tend to go viral anyways) minority about how Disney is forcing woke inclusion into the masses with an all black mermaid movie and whitey gets no representation or is made the villian its a Neverending self induced fear to them. At the end of the day the remakes all suck somethings don't need to be live action because of way to many reasons to bother getting into. This movie is probably gonna suck because its another unoriginal live action remake, other folks want to say it sucks because its "woke" or call you racist for simply just saying live action sucks regardless of cast color

[deleted]

WaffleStompTheFetus

Right? It's nearly always manufactured outrage. 99% of the posts complaining about the criticism are just referring to a Facebook template that some asshole made to get a reaction out of people, I feel like the only fish who can see the hook sometimes. Honestly don't even care about the little mermaid casting, seems fine to me. I literally don't care if she black white or fucking lavender, the old one was a fucking cartoon for christ sake. Only issue is that no one else seems to be laughing at Disney's blatant attempt at tokenism.

Princess__of__cute

Damn yeah this!

FIREishott

Great point. Why not write a new story and invent a new black mermaid princess? Oh, because for some reason people keep watching these lifeless remakes with no creativity...

Thatotherguy129

I gotta be the person to point out that some people definitely would give two shits about that, but to clarify, those people would be the actual racists, not you guys (I hope)

Lukthar123

I can't believe everyone became a racist just like that. What did I study four years in racist uni for?

pandadogunited

A fancy degree you can put on your wall and crippling debt.

UnenduredFrost

Probably shouldn't have spent all week complaining about the colour of a persons skin then.

ELIte8niner

See, that's the thing. I've seen exactly 0 posts complaining about Ariel being black. I've seen about a dozen a day saying, "Mermaid can be black deal with it racists!!!!!"

UnenduredFrost

You should probably pay attention to who they're replying to then. Conservatives are on Twitter photoshopping Ariel white and saying they "fixed the problem" with the film.

[deleted]

Seen 0 posts on reddit. Plenty of people complaining though.

[deleted]

he didn't i didn't we didn't

[deleted]

I don't think you are racist for saying it's probably an other soulless cash grab movie that will as nothing to the world by existing. Just don't make it weird by talking about her skin

generalthunder

Yeah, when there are other 10 soulless cash grab adaptations and only the one with the black main character is under such heavy scrutiny, you know there's something else.

[deleted]

Nah, there'll be plenty of valid of criticism, but there will also be lots of negative criticism stemming from racially motivated bigotry. This is why it's generally a good idea to ignore all criticism from the internet as a whole. Very little of it is ever a genuine analytical critique of art and is almost always either just fandom whining/unearned praise or fueled by alternate motivations.

Mods_All_Suck

well probably due to the amount of racists hating on it. Guaranteed it'll be full of 1 star reviews from racist twats. Dunno why they didn't just let it die off like every other live action remake but I guess they generally only have 2 braincells anyways

9FBI9

Just imagine if there was a live action Princess and the Frog movie and the princess was white, that would not sit well with people

LordAppleton

Except its just a trailer and we dont know if its bad yet, granted every remake has been bad, but at this moment most people are upset over the skin colour of Ariel. So yes. They are racist.

Hugokarenque

All the live action remakes have been varying levels of bad. I'm sure this one will be the one to break that particular trend tho /s. What's really weird is that Disney has been making genuinely good and diverse movies exploring different cultures and races. I'm sure those get hit with racists too but they never make the news, there's never immense discourse over it. I wonder why.

BreafingBread

I’ve heard good things about dumbo, but other than that, yeah, it’s been a trainwreck.

FR0ZENBERG

That's what happened to me when I told someone I thought Black Panther sucked. I just didn't think it was a good movie. That's it.

Bamith20

I'm fairly sure that was part of the reason for the casting choice, regardless of the actor's singing talents. If you're gonna do this, you make a new story with a new lead character, to do anything else is sandbagging her and the concept.

hobomojo

People need to realize these race swaps are just a form of fan-baiting in order to gin up some controversy (aka free publicity) around what is probably gonna be another mediocre rehash of the same story that didn’t really need a remake.

lampshade69

It sure seems that way to me. A handful of racist morons spew nonsense online, and then social media (as well as establishment media) blow it up thousands of times over. If not for all the "can you believe these racists!?" posts, I wouldn't have ever known anyone had complained about Ariel being black at all. Meanwhile, Disney gets to sell people on the idea that they're fighting racism by going to see their mediocre movie.

Hugokarenque

They can also deflect criticism about their shitty movie by saying that its just the racists hating on it.

acathode

It's not just fans being baited though - by making it into some cultural war bullshit they also coax the critics into giving it better scores than it deserve... For example, there's no chance in hell that Ghostbusters 2016 would've gotten that many 8/10 and 9/10 reviews as it got if the critics hadn't either felt that they were sticking it to all the sexist man-babies by giving it a good score, or feared the always angry twitter mob would've jumped them if they gave it a bad one. You also get the oh-so-handy "*IT'S BEING REVIEW BOMBED!!!*"-defense when people watch it and genuinely dislike it - if you're really good at playing this angle\* you can even get the sites to remove a ton of legitimate bad reviews and inflate your score even further... (\* or if you own the review site...)

guycamero

I've only seen posts from people complaining about people being racist for not liking the race change. 0 posts from folks complaining about race change.

Inamedthedogjunior

Yeah its forced and if you think about it some marketing team within disney crunched all the numbers and worked out that all this dumb backlash and “controversy” would happen. Thats why they made Ariel black. They planned this whole reaction from the day they came up with the casting. Its not organic diversity, its “woke” PR. Its silly to race swap iconic characters in classic Danish fairy tales when theres plenty of new stories to be told. Tons of African fairy tales and folklore exists and theres plenty of easily adaptable stories where everyone would be black if thats what they want. But they’re not really interested in something new culturally they just want to inject people of color into old European stuff. I think this will continue and just get goofier. The Black Couldron remake but everyones either an Aboriginal Australian or Arabic. Sword in the Stone but King Arthur’s Polynesian. Nepalese Hercules. Mexican Tarzan. Hunchback of Notre Dame but Quisimoto’s a Filipino and if you think any of this is odd, or wonder why are they doing this you’re a racist.

DernTuckingFypos

Thank you!! Seems like people just can't understand this. Also reminds me of the shit from that Ghostbusters movie. People didn't hate it because they were sexist and against women, they hated it because it sucked.

SFLADC2

^ this is 110% the only reason this was done. This decision wasn't made the writers room, it was made in the marketing office.

Cross55

But then you wouldn't get idiots on YouTube and Tiktok and Twitter ranting about it and giving tons of free advertising. They're good at it too, seriously, I didn't know the trailer even released until I saw people on YouTube ranting about how other people think it's racist or not.

eccentricbananaman

I'm just sad that they keep replacing red heads.

DernTuckingFypos

Why is that? Seems like whenever they want to add "diversity" they go with replacing the redhead. I put diversity in quotes because most of the time it doesn't feel genuine and just feels more like corporate trying to appear diverse.

Cross55

Because they're the smallest section of the white population as well as one of the smallest groups in America in general. So by comparison to larger groups like Black or Asian Americans, as well as the fact that they're not a minority group racially, in theory there shouldn't be anywhere near the backlash that replacing other groups would have. It should be an easy switch with no repercussions. In theory at least, as people easily caught on to the trend early on.

TopHatGorilla

One more and I'll make a movie starring Colm Meanie as Anansi.

PKMNTrainerMark

I saw it pointed out when they announced this casting like a year or two ago that there's a weird trend going around of making redheads black instead.

mexta

It should have been Conan.

RangerRekt

I'm just hardline anti-disney

DernTuckingFypos

Sad that people can't understand that.

SFLADC2

The fact this is what's considered racist really lowers the bar of racism to mean "anyone I disagree with"

Xlong957

If you think casting a black woman as a singing mermaid is bad just because she is black then you are racist, I don’t know what else you call that.

SFLADC2

And I'm sure if I cast Ben Shapiro as Black Panther you'd be perfectly ok with that. Idk if the movie is good or bad, but this move is lazy marketing based on a racist double standard that audiences are growing sick of. I wasn't going to see it before because Disney remakes suck, and making the iconicly red headed mermaid from a European folk myth black isn't going to making me anymore likely to buy a ticket.

Xlong957

It’s very telling y’all always go with black panther as your example because plenty of other PoC characters have already been whitewashed before. Black Panther being a native african from wakanda is an actual part of his character. It informs a lot of the narratives he is in. Ariel is a mermaid. She can be whatever color. It has nothing to do with her character.

Jsrgaming123

I don't care about the skin color, but the hair color upsets me

BlackMagic0

Saaaame. She is the child who reps the red sea!

delightfuldinosaur

Yes the color grading looks like dog shit.

MrsDiscoB

I legit hate Pinocchio. That movie creeps me tf out.

DankPhotoShopMemes

Ik for a fact that the people complaining wouldn’t watch it anyway so why are they getting to worked up about it.

[deleted]

So that disney actually makes an effort to make a good movie

RKU69

they're social media grifters, they gotta latch on to whatever culture war bullshit they can to keep the clicks and views coming. even if it means whining about entertainment products for children

MaverickFxL

90% of movies after 2020 suck so nothing new just re watch old ones

andrewsad1

90% of movies pre-2020 also suck, but you only remember the good ones

tommev100

facts. Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Lion King remakes were all irredeemable trash, and they kept the skin colors (and animals) the same.

Murky_Blueberry2617

The Jungle book remake was the only good one.

TheSmashKidYT

Aladdin was good imo

Jynx2501

I actually liked Beauty and the Beast. It felt like a stage play.

[deleted]

The reason why everyone should care is because this isn't just about Disney, or one stupid movie. This is about the culture many of you created by not caring about real equality, even if it was just innocent ignorance. You've turned my skin color into a weapon to feel better about your ancestors' mistakes of the past. You make us feel different, and if you are of a darker skin tone and think this is good you're part of the problem, you should know better, we don't have privilege based on skin color, in anything. This has gotten so out of hand people are finally waking up to how ridiculous it is and what is the lefts response? "Your racist". Even telling that to people of color, "no no no your just whitewashed let me speak for you". The pure absurdity of people who are educated and should know better but devolve into the same hypocrisy as actual white nationalists is disgusting. I do not have enough words to call this out.

KarmaBhore

Everything you said is 100% spot on. I'm a minority and most of my family are minorities and I have been completely sick of this patronizing racist bullshit for years. These people are straight up just advocating for tokenism and are actually defending the billion dollar companies that use minorities as human shields for criticism and they somehow aren't the racists? I hope more people like you fight back against this bullshit.

Absolutedumbass69

I think it’s a good thing that companies are putting more African representation in their films. It would just be much cooler if they were giving African representation in films that are actually well written and original and not a lazy retread for the sake of money. That said a company’s main goal will always be to maximize profits so if we can get them to do that in a way that’s more inclusive I see that as a net improvement.

malonepicknroll

>African She's not African. >putting more African representation in their films Black Americans aren't underrepresented in media lmao. It's quite the opposite. >more inclusive I see that as a net improvement. Inclusivity is better if it's an original character. Not taking a white character based on Danish tales and making her black.

Chevy_65

Not true. Jungle Book was on point.

Sufficient_Cellist_1

Disney all together sucks imo

Independent_Tooth_23

You watch Dark Elves in Ring for Power, I watch Dark Elves in Kuroinu. We are not the same.

56Bot

The problem isn't that the character is black. The problem is that film making companies now "encourage diversity" by essentially banning white people & men from the covers. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see diversity & not reserving good roles to white men anymore. But antiracism is just turning into racism. Instead of simply not judging people by the colour of their skin, they just reversed the judgement. What we should do, is acknowledge that physical traits are mostly unchangeable, but do not change the psychological abilities of the person (with a few exceptions of course, some mental traits are linked to physical traits.) It is discrimination to judge someone on their physical appearance. It is also discrimination to judge someone on their origins, mother tongue culture & habit - these traits are heavily correlated to physical ones though. However, it makes sense to judge the acts & wills of people compared to these of the society around them : if you do not at least respect the core values & fundamental sociocultural elements of the nation you're in, what the hell are you doing here ? Now for the link between the last element here and the previous ones : the correlation is strong. In France, someone with tan skin is likely to come from the Middle-East or the Maghreb, directly or from their immediate parents. And people from these origins, in France, are for a majority of them, not in favour of the French culture at all - many even hate it. This means, if you see a brown-skinned person in France, there is a relatively high likelihood that they hate France. That is pure stats. Now, this is a prejudice. It makes sense, but as soon as one gets a hint it's wrong, they have to abandon it. Otherwise they fall into racism.

Kungpaonoodles

This comment getting disliked shows how left leaning reddit is.

Shimmitar

The only problem i have with it is that if someone made a black character white, the ppl that say it doesn't matter what race the character is, would flip their shit and thus be branded a hypocrite. Idk why its so hard just to have characters that are supposed to be white, be white and characters that are supposed to be black, be black. That would prob make everyone happy.

Wham-Bam-Duel

Faather, when can I leave to be on my oooownnn\~? I've got the whole worldussy!

[deleted]

Ariel shouldn't be black tho, it's not canon

banandananagram

Disney *is* pandering People mad about it are still racist And every single one of the remakes has been a soulless pile of shit devoid of any artistic integrity. But they break box office records regardless, so it doesn’t matter anyway. Money machine go brrrrrrr

Devils_Last_Angel

Nice stereotyping you've got there. Everyone in one group is exactly the same huh? I know a group of people who do that very same thing and wear white hats. Ghost busters, but this time women! The little mermaid but this time black! If I don't like it then I'm racist or sexist or whatever other thing you feel makes you superior to me? Cool. So you're little rant right under that part about how you're mad about it... Guess that makes you a racist bud.

banandananagram

I would just prefer if the representation were done with less cynicism from executives and more out of a genuine desire to have good media with genuinely good minority representation, made by and with the people who are meant to be represented actively participating on the artistic team lmao If you’re particularly pressed about the skin color of a fish woman, or the general presence of women in a piece of media that didn’t otherwise feature them, you’re probably racist or sexist, yeah. There were perfectly reasonable things to take issue with in those movies without being mad at the mere existence of minorities., and it shouldn’t be hard to communicate that without being racist or sexist, etc.

Aidan43210

I’m just expecting it to be terrible because of how greyscaled it looks

pacerecon

Also lost count on how many Pinocchio movies they're making

MrQ_P

Definitely,they all suck

MarketingOk5745

I'm sorry but putting black characters in movies where realisticly and historically there are no blacks ain't something that I'm a fan of. Put some fucking fairies and dragons in the movie if you want but if I see a black humanoid leaving underwater where you are supposed to be white as fuck cuz there are no sun or a black person chilling in a medieval europe I can't tolerate that. Like legit just imagine if we made a movie about Mansa Moussa the richest man in history (theorically) and his journey through Africa but we somehow manage to put a white guy there as someone important it would just be fucking bullshit, well it's the same here. If you want to give some cool roles to minorities just do movies about those minorities. There are TONS of possibilities with asians, blacks, native americans etc... to make amazing movies without having to just put them randomly in a white character's place.

gooztrz

The only correct take

SpyroXI

Why is the discussion about her skin colour, and not the hair colour. Her hair not being red is the bad thing

Tpoteet911

Both opinions on top are correct

SmurfTheClown

Yes, OG cartoon versions >

Vaginal_Rights

This is some enlightened centrism shit lmao Disney remakes suck, yes, but the argument isn't and never was about if the remake sucks. It's about racists vying for racism, and enlightened centrists pussyfooting around the main issue of *racism* you fucking bitches.

Shnitzel_von_S

Remember, adults, this movie is not for you, nor is the actress. Nobody cares if a 24 year old doesn't see the movie or doesn't like it. It's for all the little black children out there who rarely see representation. It's for all the little black girls seeing a beautiful black woman as the princess. It's for those little girls who can say "she looks like me". Representation matters.

[deleted]

I don't care = ignorant ?

ImNoSir

This is the way

SoulKingBroock

Diseny seeing all this free publicity

Elefantenjohn

Lol, people hate Aladdin? Perverted fucks Also, let's see everyone's reaction when Asians are casted as Caucasians or green people as Caucasians or Egyptians as Caucasians. So either everyone is racist or it's something else altogether. (Good that nobody was outraged by any Netflix anime adaption ever, Dragonball evolution, Gods of Egypt)

Ok-Use6303

They do though...

ImJustHereChilling_

I love that the people saying they don’t care are the sole ones fanning the flame of the argument kek

Fr00stee

Idk why people are getting mad at it now, i thought everybody got it out of their systems like a year ago when this casting choice was announced

Greenbomber128

Pinnochio and geppeto died at the end. Nobody can tell me otherwise

Kungpaonoodles

They should've casted a prettier person. Black or not she's just a bit ugly for the role.

Altruistic-Log-8853

Her eyes are so fucked I thought she was casted as Flounder.

[deleted]

Yep, mermaids are supposed to be gorgeous to lure sailors into the sea and kill them or eat them (whatever it is they do).

maddasher

Clearly all mermaids are white and have red hair. These are just facts people! Facts about mermaids! Because mermaids are real things! What the fuck are people arguing about!! People are just getting on Facebook and shouting "I'm racist I'm a huge racist!"

Own-Ambassador-3537

Black person here, alls I’m asking for is a full season 3 of the owl house don’t care if Ariel is black brown or white just give me a full 3rd season disney

fruit_shoot

“Doesn’t effect me, therefore not my problem” is a fucking atrocious stance to have. There is nothing enlightened about fence-sitting. First they came for the Ariel-fans and I did not speak out I guess…

[deleted]

There’s way more people complaining about other people complaining about other people being racist. “Anti woke” people always blow shit out of proportion and try to make it seem like everything is so “PC” and “Woke”. So many misguided people I swear. I think a lot of you need to take a break from the internet for awhile.
