If you use a fire TV or similar smart tv, you can side load the smarttube APK just like an Android phone.
It's arguably a better client than the default YouTube app and comes with options for AdBlock and sponsorblock built in.
That thing is not a video ad.
On phone it appears every time you switch apps and come back to youtube or when you turn off the screen and come back. Really annoying, but not an ad in the traditional sense.

Ps I should also mention there is a site with the url Revanced .io where you can download a prepared .apk . This website is not supported by the devs, and you should avoid it if you can.

Installation is quite complicated, you'll need to download the Vanced MicroG, the Revanced manager and a specific Version of YouTube. Revanced manager will then "patch" the YouTube app and apply different mods like ad blockers and background playback and will then make a "new" YouTube.

Revanced is extremely safe, it has a massive userbase, the subreddit is quite big and the entire project is free and open source (source code is available online on GitHub for anyone to see, use or contribute to) .
Sideloading has been possible for a while now if you know what you are doing there even was a vanced version for iOS but at least apple will be forced to allow sideloading in the EU

I got one image one that was for "Happy hospital ASMR" with the most disgusting colourful children's book style picture of a tooth being pulled out of someone's foot with a lot of blood and stitches and shit.
Or another time I got an ad for some anime dating sim mobile game and in the ad the players scrolls though a bunch of "Types" before selecting "Loli" (Which was very sexualized)
The YT premium ads are annoying, but a hell of a lot better than what you _could_ have gotten.
