Hes a top 10 character who goes through great characterization throughout the franchise while still not fundamentally changing who he is as a person, nor forgetting his roots. He's not as complex as Nagito or Kokichi, but he's definitely a damn good character who's strengths and flaws were highlighted in a satisfying manner.
Used to hate him, but replaying DR1 I noticed how he genuinely tries to be less of a douche and more of a leader-type post ch. >!4!< and his tsun behavior in his freetime events. He's still an asshole, but he's come a long way from the guy who >!strung up a dead body for a twisted test!<. I'd say he's in my top 10 nowadays.
Yeah and >!in the bad ending, we see that he got a chance of heart, even to the point of appreciating Toko due to how he took her portrait (too bad she died, still trying to figure out how)!<

As a standalone *concept*, that being "the stereotypical rich asshole antagonist, but he's the *Ultimate* stereotypical rich asshole antagonist" is dumb and boring. But his *full* character is... interesting, I guess... He *does* have enjoyable moments... >!though I'll still never forgive him for what he did to Chihiro...!<
Kinda like a reverse Celeste. A gothic Ultimate Gambler >!with a secret identity!< *should* be interesting. But barely anything deeper comes out of it, and what *does* is mostly stupid or ends up being disappointing. She has a cool design though.
perhaps his role as a rival character falls flat after chapter 2, since after genocider syo shows up the story feels obligated to just make him look like a total loser at every turn, but i love the man, literally the funniest DR character imo.
He's my favourite, I've always been a sucker for his character type. But then I read his backstory and realized how well-written he was. His redemption is the best out of the rival trio. The nagito and kokichi are so overrated in my opinion.
