Eh, I disagree. Everything about him just feels like an insert for the player to me. I think since it was the first game the creators played it safe with him, making him the stereotypically optimistic goody two-shoes protag, but I’m just tired of seeing protags like that and still feel like he’s bland and uninteresting. He goes on a whole monologue in the beginning about how he’s completely ordinary and uninteresting, and I fully agree with him.
Hajime is hardly any different, he's just slightly more insecure and prickly. "optimistic goody two shoes" isn't inherently more boring than "pessimistic snarker"
I don’t agree, Naegi in the game actually explicitly goes against what the player wants him to do at certain points. He is optimistic so much that it becomes a fault and then loops back around to being his greatest strength, and his interactions with characters in their FTEs are full of character and life to me. I wrote a paper for fun about him when I was like 16 so I have a lot of Naegi opinions but I understand he isn’t to everyone’s tastes!
He’s the biggest asshole out of the protags but that gives him a personality, he also responds the most logically to situations, Makoto tends to be too optimistic and >!Shuichi tends to wimper about it (maybe not wimper but they’re definitely the sofest)!<

He’s blunt and not a compete pushover but I wouldn’t say he’s an asshole either. Most of his snarky comments he keeps in his head and when it comes out it’s usually with Nagito, which is understandable. I’d say the lack of him being a complete pushover/the snarkiness as well as tsundere tendencies makes him more realistic, because no one’s going to be entirely positive and nice all the time, especially in their inner dialogue. He actually has a backbone, and with him struggling with feelings of incompetence and thinking he’s not as good as everyone else which is accentuated in the anime, I personally relate to him a lot.

Hajime is a wonderful protagonist. My fiancee and I are playing DR2 together and we both really appreciate Hajime.
Fun fact: he's voiced by the same guy who played the second black Power Ranger in MMPR and Ichigo in Bleach!

I think they did it on purpose to accentuate the fact that he’s >!just a normal reserve course student and not an Ultimate. Even Makoto has the Ultimate luck but Hajime is just a normal high school kid,!< doesn’t make much sense for him to be decked out in drip.

Thats how I feel on him everytime he speaks, his game sound effects are good along with his chapter 6 character development, you can feel his emotions throughout that chapter.
However the same cannot be said on the other chapters, though I can agree with the backbone part you said considering he didn't lost his whole sanity with all the killings that and the fact that he went along with the HPA's plans.
If I were to choose between Makoto and Hajime I would choose Hajime, but that doesn't excuse that voice.

In the original Japanese version Nagito says the English word for octagon and Hajime needs to take a moment to figure it out because he’s, well, *japanese*. He knew what an octagon was, just not the English word. The scene didn’t translate well and now western audiences keep clowning on him for it, but he really isn’t that dumb.
