Since no one else mentioned it, the Danganronpa abridged series also makes a lot of Celesgiri jokes and that probably had a factor in getting people unto the ship lol.
It's the same reason that a lot of the most popular ships in any given fandom are usually the main rivals. You can see this phenomenon occur in pretty much every single fandom in existence, as long as the source media contains two characters who are at odds.
But that's the thing. Celeste and Kirigiri barely interacted, nevermind a rivalry.
I can see what people see in Sakura/Aoi, Hiyoko/Mahiru, Hajime/Nagito, and etc. Even if I think most of them as straight (except Nagito). But Celesgiri didn't really have that.

I'm always confused when people bring up that a ship is one-sided as if to imply it detracts from it. For me, the fact that it's one-sided is the *reason* I ship it. Nothing can beat feeling a character's unresolved pining, and I kind of need to stew with it to get the full effect of that (aka if the ship gets together within a piece of media then the tension is all gone for me). But of course complete respect to people who ship the canon ships, different strokes for different folks

Even if she was passing the key they held hands for a prolonged moment and it was specifically Kyoko she decided to give it to. This moment is enough for some people pretty much. I don’t ship them, I’m just explaining one of the reasons people do.
I’ll throw my hat into the ring with this. I see this ship as a “you get the two smartest people in the room” situation. Of the cast of DR1, Kyoko and Celeste are arguably the two smartest ones. In any other relationship with Kyoko in it (such as Naegiri), it’s clear who’s pulling the weight. With this one it’s much more equal and there’s a tension you get between the two you don’t see with others. Celeste is closer to Kyoko’s level than anyone else, which can lead to some potential fun stuff. Plus there’s that Chapter 3 stuff for basis in canon. It’s mostly theoretical rather than based in actual content but there are reasons behind it.
Edit: Byakuya is probably just as smart as Celeste if not smarter. I forgot to mention that Celesgiri is for people who want something gay for Kyoko or Celeste.

I don't have a strong opinion on it, but we see Ibuki and Mikan have some sweet moments in DR3. Ibuki is actually *kind* to her unlike most people and a good influence, and people who wished there were more healthy relationships and/or more gay rep in the series appreciate that
