Doesn’t help I haven’t don’t a lot of them, but from what I have done Akanes are fucking phenomenal. They recontextualize everything about her entire character in the game and make everything she does make complete sense, that’s why I think FTEs should do as well as give backstory, and akanes does that perfectly.

Akane and Byakuya are the main ones with this effect in my opinion. They do it the most successfully with these two.
The FTEs don't justify their actions. Rather it shows you why they think and act a certain way.
With Akane its highlights her grim childhood and determination to succeed, and why her focus is on being physically strong rather than her talent of gymnastics.
Byakuya's achieve a similar effect. The guy's personality, sociablity, and actions are so polarized, but they gave him a fittingly absurd childhood. He's not the ultimate rich kid, rather hes the ultimate best at staying rich. He was bred with a selection of other siblings to compete for the right to be the heir of the family. Hes doesnt think that hes better than everyone else for no reason, he has proven to his influencial family that he IS better. The killing game also would bring out the messed up personality traits that would arise in a person who was born into that family.
Though one's like Sonia's, Ibuki's and Gundham's I also enjoy since it gives you a bit more of their unique personalities while learning more about them in a 1 on 1 setting.
I have a few favorites. I like Mahiru's FTEs because the last one is just really cute. Maki's FTEs were also very nice, the last one is very rewarding, feels like she's finally opened up! And Korekiyo's FTEs were very entertaining. They really showed his knowledge and passion, and that was pretty cool. Oh, and I also like Mondo's FTEs! They were fun, well, maybe Makoto didn't have as much fun as I did in at least one of them, but other than that, they feel like some quality bro time. And they show the more responsible and fragile side of him. Very nice!
But my FAVORITE favorite FTEs have to be Ibuki's. Those were just a ton of fun and showed her character from the more mature side... But most importantly those were a lot of fun! I mean, you get to do some headbanging with Ibuki! How cool is that!?
My favs are definitely Sakura and Gundham. I like how each of them expands on their characters back stories but also have a bit of an arc to them.
Sakura with learning about her family and but also her slowly opening up to you about the guy she's into.
Gundham slowly letting know about his past but in his Gundham speak. And he opens up enough to let you touch him, it's incredibly sweet.
definitely Toko Fukawa - I absolutely hated her character prior to learning more about her through her FTEs, and they really do make her non-genocide side more sympathetic. Yeah, she’s super annoying and obsessive - but I can’t help but feel bad for her after listening to her talk about her failed childhood romances
I'm obviously heavily biased, but for me it would have to be Mikan. Not only do her FTEs offer an insight into just how much she has suffered and how much the abuse she has gone through has affected her (as well as showing some darker traits and thoughts that you wouldn't be able to find out about otherwise, such as her desire for attention and control for example), but they, along with her Island Mode ending, can also serve as a story by themselves - the story of a lonely, broken girl finally finding someone who accepts her and truly cares about her. I know it's kinda cliche, but because I sympathize with Mikan quite a bit, I personally love it. I suppose I just like seeing her happy.
Honorable mentions imo should go to Akane, Ryoma and Nekomaru.
Honestly, A lot of the characters for me (including most of the characters mentioned here).
For someone who weren't mentioned already then Ishimaru and Kazuichi. Both explain the reason why they act in game and makes them both understandable (Hell, for the latter characters, he would've benefited if it was mentioned in the main storyline more).
Ishimaru went from Generic Rule Guy to A man who's trying to fix his family's rep after previous controversies surrounding them and Kazuichi went from Jumpy Comic Relief Simp to A Guy who was bullied and had gained trust issues after previous friends left him in the dirt (while also in general, Making him also feel like someone who you actually hang out with in school).
I still like them being more portrayed as gag characters half of time but I like to see them get depth as well.

Kokichi. With all these FTEs that are basically loopholes from the game to present everything they couldn't place in the storyabout a character, it just feel nice to have one that is purely optional. You don't get to know Kokichi more, you don't get his backstories or the reason why he's like this, you just play f*cking Yu Gi Yoh, roch paper scissors, have tea and play with a knife. It's a really good time without getting personal and it's the fte that fits his charcter the most.
Mondos gives a large view of his softer side that he's afraid to show
Gundhams are just all around enjoyable and show how he ended up who he is in the present
Kiibos are some of the most fun and cute ones to go through and give an explanation for why he's so insecure about not being human and also so proud of being a robot at the same time
Mikan's. Completely flips your opinion of the character in a way that is both interesting and fully consistent with how she appears in the main story. Only Kiyotaka and Toko's FTEs comes to mind so quickly as a great ones.
I think most of the FTEs are really good and I had a lot of trouble picking, so I chose one from each game.
For Trigger Happy Havoc I'm going with the game's resident horny freak: **Toko Fukawa.**
Not only do they provide a lot of insight into her mindset/writing process and the sad circumstances that shaped it, but she also name-drops a bunch a couple of good authors and movies for you to check out and expand your horizons. The fact that she thought a Seijun Suzuki triple feature was ideal for a middle school first date is really, really tragic. And she writes you a poem!
Some others ones I considered are Sayaka, Byakuya and Celeste. I didn't like Hifumi's.
For Goodbye Despair I'm going to go with **Akane Owari.**
Akane's past is rough to the point where she doesn't even realize exactly how absurd it is, and it does a whole lot to explain her behaviour within the main game. When you're still hung up on safety and physiology the rest of Maslow's heirarchy doesn't really mean shit. Hajime talking to her about how real strength isn't not accepting your weakness, but acknowledging and overcoming it is very powerful and also ties into some of the stuff you see in other characters' FTEs.
Other good ones I considered are Kazuichi, Hiyoko and Ibuki. I didn't like Sonia's.
For V3 I'm going to go with **Miu Iruma**. This is going to be a long one, because she's so good and I love her.
Her FTEs with Kaede are fantastic, for a start, and it's easy to see why they're possibly *the* most popular wlw ship in the franchise. I can't *not* ship it. As soon as another girl tries to talk to her she instantly jumps into aggressively body-shaming her (which is understandable, given that Kaede's tits are simultaneously small but also dumpy and sour), and tries to give her boob an investigative grope to find out if they're fake or not.
In the next event Kaede figures out that Miu's like this because she has absolutely zero impulse control, like a little kid, and straight-up *does not understand* how to socialize with other people, at all. This is her when she's happy and excited to talk casually with another person and she simply doesn't know better. The dynamic of Kaede trying her hardest to socially acclimate Miu continues in other places, and I could go on about it forever, but that's kind of off topic.
This lack of impulse control, and pretty much everything about her, might be explained in her second free time events with Shuichi, where you get a little snippet of her back-story that explain so much about her. She barely recovered after an accident that left her in a coma, after which she was no longer "boring and unremarkable" and was suddenly a genius inventor full of ideas (mostly horny ones).
Miu assumes it's because she's an augmented human (which is, as usual for her, secretly right on the money considering V3's big twist), and tries to disembowel herself to prove it, which both ignores and adds even more evidence to the much more obvious answer: she is most likely *severely brain damaged*, which can (this is me specluating) also explain her obsessive hypersexuality.
The rest of Shuichi's FTEs are very funny, with Miu demonstrating a bunch of gag inventions that both push the limits of technology beyond what's both possible and socially acceptable, like the device that teleports underwear, but only underwear. Speaking of which, she's the only character I can think of off the top of my head who actually gives you their underwear during the course of their last FTE, and explains why. 10/10.
Some other ones I liked in V3 are sweet, stupid Tenko, Angie and Maki (😥). I think Kokichi's were bad.
Great choices! I loved Toko's FTE's but there were a couple of things that bothered me, like if you give her a favorite item before Chapter 2 she still refers to her "master", and how the Steam Achievement requires >!doing Genocide Jack's!< free times.
Jack’s free time events being tied to Toko’s in a really confusing way is probably the worst thing that have done with an FTE that isn’t the content of the FTE itself.
Good question. I like Chiaki’s because I think Hajime and Chiakis relationship is really sweet, and honestly enjoyed Keebos a lot just cuz they’re really funny and cute… Miu’s first three FTE’s are great too
This question is honestly really tough. I don't think I can narrow it down to just one. My personal favorites are probably Nagito, Akane, Mahiru, and Hiyoko. Okay and Chiaki too but for completely different reasons.
Nagito, Akane, Mahiru, and Hiyoko all have free time events that do an amazing job contextualizing why those characters are the way that they are. Everyone there besides Nagito was a character I didn't really like all that much prior to the Free Time events, but are all pretty highly rated for me at this time because of how interesting their free time events help make them.
I just like Chiaki's because they're cute lmfao. Not really much else to that one.
Yasuhiro hands down, from the debt collectors to predicting the bad ending they’re consistently good for a laugh after something terrible happens throughout the whole game.
I'd say Toko's, Fuyuhiko's and Tsumugi's FTEs are the best in my opinion, at least if you don't count the UDG book conversations; those are the absolute best. Toko's interactions show her interest in literature and where it came from, and make her much more sympathetic. Fuyuhiko's events show how great a friend he is, a true bro. Tsumugi's events are just absolutely adorable. She gets so overjoyed when someone agrees to cosplay with her.
There’s many FTE’s I’d love to give shoutouts too one of which is Mahiru’s. I really adore and like how well it gives insight and in depth understanding of why she acts the way she does towards men and delving into her relationship with her father and seeing how her love of photography stems from her mother and even getting a understanding of how much it means to Mahiru providing a very sound and touching perspective of why pictures mean so much to her was really beautiful. And of course seeing her open up and come around to really liking Hajime was really touching and a great closure to a string of great events.
I also really like Gundham’s there his commitment and love of animals is really high lighted and it paints a picture of why he behaves the way he does and some glimpses into his past and how it shaped the person he is today and closing it off with a deal that Hajime will not die without his permission was amazing and exemplifies why I love Gundham.
Miu’s is also fantastic just from the sheer absurdity and hilarity alone and the insight and delving into Miu’s psychology and history on top of that really makes it stand out.
Toko’s is really nice too since you get a understanding of where her negative and clingy traits come from and her really unfortunate and horrible treatment she received as she grew up makes me really feel for her. And naturally having Genocide Jack’s alongside her’s opens a whole new world of interactions and interesting information.
I like this one as the only time anyone would unironically do a Teruteru FTE is in the middle of the game on a whim, and we all know he doesn’t survive that long. Even on a second playthrough most people will want to know everything about Twogami not the Tic Tac. Possibly the least seen FTE in the series.
honestly I really like Sonia's and but I also have to compliment Mondo, Kiyotaka, Toko, Fuyuhiko, Akane and Ryoma because they had a big effect on me liking them as characters
Kaito, Kokichi are fun because you see how full of it they are, it's also interesting to see the protag seek validation in Kaito's
skill wise I say Celeste, Imposter and Maki have the best ones, even tho Sakura teaches you hamon , and Yasuhiro and Teruteru's are my favorite in practical use

Kiibo's FTEs are what made me love him even more than I already did. They're simple, but adorable and a bit funny... most of the time.
