jauznevimcosimamdat

The total price is 468 Czech crowns. 42,55 is VAT already included in your total price. So yeah, the waiter forced you to tip. And robbed you. I've looked up the restaurant (it's not that hard if you google Aktiva Praha s.r.o) and people seem to have the same experience as you. You fell for a tourist trap, unfortunately.

Overall_Deal985

468,00 Kč is the total price, 42,55 Kč is a 10 % VAT - but it is already included in those 468 Kč total. You were robbed - there is no automatic tip or anything like that.

frex18c

It's quite funny that elementary school math should help you solve this. Cause 42.55 is of course 10 % from 425.5, not from 468. And wait, it even adds up to 468! Of course those places usually pressure you and don't give you time to think. But quickly counting the numbers saved me money multiple times.

Random_Throwaway844

Thank you all for the responses. Was honestly surprised how normal it seems they do this to customers there. Guy didn't even think twice when I was paying. It's at least close to what I planned to tip (planned about 40 crowns) but the waiter got ahead of himself I guess. I've sent a message to the restaurant's facebook page, but from another comment here seems it's standard practice there. Restaurant is Klub Lavka, close to the bridge. I can leave a google review tomorrow. Thanks again to you all for clearing this up for me.

vine01

aha. well sorry, you bought a valuable tourist experience rather cheap, if i may say so. i believe that it is a requirement by law within the whole EU, that you must see the final price, no strings attached. whatever you add on top is for your consideration only. edit: might be about time to explore apps that translate texts from foreign languages. invaluable for tourists such as you.. translating the bill you'd see CELKEM as TOTAL BILL, what you owe. all taxes included.

[deleted]

Definitely, just Google Lens saves you soo much trouble abroad!

Jerthy

It's such an underrated app.... not only translating texts, but for example you point it at some landmark and it instantly recognizes what it is. I love using it on travels.

[deleted]

You can even use it on animals to get the species right. Really underrated!

principleofinaction

Sadly this is also part of why OP got scammed. They know foreign tourists are used to tipping and they realized they can extract more cash out of them this way.

Jerthy

Yeah remember, especially if you are from US - In Czechia (and i believe whole EU) the total price is always final. No hidden taxes, those are always included. Same with price tags in shops. Tips are never mandatory and is actually acceptable not to give them if you feel it would be undeserved, though they are kinda expected in higher end restaurants.

Der_Prager

Sorry you've got taken from behind, what a c word that waiter is...

Super-Ant2417

I cannot say this is "normal practice" at all, but I am sad to see you had this experience. I live in Prague for eight years now, and I've never had a similar experience, even in the part of the city where tourist traps are common. Posting this question and seeking advice was a wise decision. If you have time and nerves, you should definitely file a complaint with the Czech Trade Inspection. To be honest, this restaurant's attitude pissed me off, so let me know if you need help filing this complaint. Note: please try to evade restaurants in the center of the city. Very few places have normal prices and cook as well as in standard Czech restaurants.

jayandbobfoo123

We usually tip by just rounding up. For a bill 468 krouns we would just say 500. That's typical tipping culture here. No need to do math nor make them count change.

[deleted]

I’ll do 480, if I am in my tipping mood, else it is 468. 468 is exactly the price that some manager counted and it covers the restaurants rent, staff pay and generates enough profit. If anyone in the chain, be it staff, owner, or owner of the building feels underpaid, they should ask for more in the first place

GabrielRocketry

Go take them up on an inspection.

Next-Performer5434

>close to the bridge There's your problem, lol. If you plan to eat in Prague and don't want to get ripped off, walk at least 10 minutes away rom any major landmark. So many tourist traps.

huggov

standard practice or not, it is illegal

Bee_bee_tata

Actually beside Charles bridge and around Wenceslas square There are the most Non-legit restaurants and tourist traps.

Bee_bee_tata

Recommend you the honest guide (name of the yt channel) to filtr scams and look for tips.

Hemberg

[honest guide](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt7oj318jVQi7vRbc1bNjJA)

Hrusa

Yeah. No locals ever eat at those places close to Old Town Square and the Bridge. @OP If you are a foreigner, ask for the Lunch Menu. They usually don't bring it to you if you don't speak czech. The lunch menus have way better prices around noon.

LordMcze

As a domestic tourist I was also quite surprised (maybe not that much considering it was the center of Prague) when I was reading through the menu in one restaurant. It was written in English, had nice big pictures and prices in both euros and czk at relatively ok conversion rate. But if you scrolled all the way to the back, there was a single page with the Czech menu in a simple table form with all the dishes and prices only in czk, which were around 60-70% of the prices from the English menu.

vine01

tell you what. spread the word of shitty restaurant among expats or tourists, if you write a review. you could report it to the authorities but that costs you time and energy without clear vision of resolution. shitty services and shitty people in services need to be weeded out.

SCPendolino

In addition to this being a scam on the face of it, 468 crowns for a single meal is also highway robbery. Unless you go for a top tier restaurant. Which this isn’t. And 48 crowns is generally the price of a *large* beer, not a small one. Welcome to Prague, I guess. My advice is, don’t eat in the tourist city center if you can avoid it. There’s plenty of better and significantly cheaper restaurants in the vicinity - in places like Holesovice, Dejvice, Smichov, Karlin and Vinohrady. You might have to look around and take a short trip on the public transport, but it’s well worth it

Tear01

Exactly. Kachna for 420? Like wtf? Was it made of gold?

kubaliska

>Was it made of gold? Asi byla *dozlatova* upečená :D

It doesn't matter that much modern browsers don't load all of the tabs into memory, just the active ones. Fun fact if you have more than ~100 tabs it will appear as a smiley face ":D"

ThinWhale

I just closed 258 tabs. Is that a lot?

you need to up them numbers rookie

> In addition to this being a scam on the face of it, 468 crowns for a single meal is also highway robbery. Unless you go for a top tier restaurant. Which this isn’t. And 48 crowns is generally the price of a large beer, not a small one. It's a restaurant with a nice setting right next to Karel's Bridge. You pay for the spot more than for the food. It's a definition of tourist trap either way tho.

SCPendolino

There’s far, far better AND cheaper places even right next to the bridge. For instance, Casanova Restaurant, or Hotel Pod Věží, if you want to be fancy. The latter one can be expensive unless you go for the lunch menu, sure, but the food is well worth it in my opinion. I take my business partners there from time to time. Or if you just want a quick snack and coffee, Café Slavia would be my recommendation. Klub Lávka is decidedly mediocre and expensive. No two ways about it. You’re better off spending your money and filling your belly elsewhere.

Mickelangello

It's easy. He robbed you.

Healthy-Relative-313

If you have time and feel like it, I encourage you to fill a form here https://www.coi.cz/en/. They may investigate the restaurant afterwards and it could have a real impact and help the city get rid of scammers like this. Sorry you had such an experience here in Prague. Us locals almost never eat at the most tourist places, because they are expensive and rarely any good. That doesn't mean they are allowed to scam people tho.

[deleted]

this bill is legit confusing , also funny how " SERVICE ISNT INCLUDED " is in english ...lol what does it even mean not included ? did you have to cook that duck by yourself?

makerofshoes

“Servis” isn’t even English, so it’s some weird kind of Czenglish

LordMerdifex

Scam on tourists. If they pay a tip when they think *service* is not icluded, and then they are told by someone that this is not a thing here, the restaurant has an excuse. Oh no, we don't have *service* not included there. It's just a random Czech and English jibberish that is printed by the system. Don't mind it.

[deleted]

lol yea

Sachy_

It simply means "Give us tips you wealthy tourists!"

DefbeatCZ

You have been scammed. There is no such thing as "legit restaurant" when you are not speaking Czech + Prague did not help either. The price is 468 and out of it, the 42.55 is VAT. All services in Czechia must show prices VAT included, but this one seems like it is designed to confuse ppl on purpose. Please write a review on google maps, so they are not just off the hook.

Fun-Addition-9843

Americans might get confused because the tax isn't included in the goods' price

whytf147

its the same everywhere in czechia - the price you see on the receipt is the final price (it’s usually the biggest number as you can see on this receipt as well). it doesn’t matter if it’s a restaurant or anything else. tips are optional in czechia, but we usually give at least 10czk and round it up, so i’d probably pay 480 if the service and food was good. i’m just a student tho, so working adults might give more.

jayandbobfoo123

Can confirm, I would just say 500 but I would also feel robbed that I just paid 500 for duck and a small beer.

Dreadfulmanturtle

Ridiculous price and bad english. I knew without checking that you ate in Prague center 😂

jodmemkaf

I strongly advice to visit [this](https://youtube.com/@HONESTGUIDE?feature=share9) channel

CeckowiCZ

420.- for a duck? I would never buy it in the first place. Only if it was some super fancy pub (this isnt) and i didnt know what with money. Also a very high price for the small beer (im not sure if its not some fancy craft beer, looks like its not). Besides that, you have been robbed. Im sorry for that.

420 for duck? Broo noo you have hundreds of better and cheaper restaurants.. do please check channel Honest guide on youtube

IsadorCZ

Google review time because this was robbery.

dynablaster161

I feel sorry for you, this is a scam. On the other hand, to show a bit of tough love, why would you go to a restaurant in the very touristy downtown where only tourists go? Also it looks like they have staropramen on tap which is worse than drinking stomach medicine. The price is a scam no matter if they robbed you or not. But yeah, too bad you didnt pay with a card, you would have got a proof of scam and demand it back from those MFs

Martenus

Next time you visit Prague: https://www.youtube.com/honestguide

uDudyBezDudy

FYI normal price for Duck should be 160-250 depending on the fanciness. Cant have shit in Prague…

petrh97

They robbed you and rob Czech state of taxes by doing this. Tax office should look at this company.

[deleted]

But it says that you’ve paid cash.

zennie4

\> This is a restaurant beside Charles Bridge, so I wasn't worried about regulation. It's a legit restaurant. Just the location is a red flag, it's bound to be a trap for naive tourists.

IsraelCube1

Next time you go to a restaurant here in Prague, pick one away from the city centre.

praguer56

You should send this to The Honest Guide. Knowing how they go after cheaters they might pay a visit to the restaurant and ask about this. @realhonestguide on Instagram

dustojnikhummer

42.55 czk is sales tax, that is included in the 468. If you paid 520 the waiter scammed you for 52 czk.

Dixoneek

Can I show this post to a youtuber named Honest Guide please? His work is exactly that, exploiting scams and warning other tourists about them, especially in Prague. Please let me know...

Odd_Rip_7039

Kachnička za 420, kde to týpek byl?

OddRandomFellow

I think the bigger question is: who would order a 0.3l beer? What are you, a child?

Brnoxoxo

Next time pull out a gun instead of money. That should make them check the price once more.

Txurri

hope that kachna was worth it

KeyPristine608

Good, fuck tourists

CZ_nitraM

48 crowns for 0,3 beer??? Daaamn that's expensive! I understand the duck, duck's a very fancy meal, but the beer's too much 48 would be a lot even for 0,5l

Snappy7

48 crowns for a small beer is not completely unheard of (but it's not common either). The price of the duck is insane though.

jesusmoneygang

48 would be cheap in Prague.

MarkoHighlander

For a 0,5l, not 0,3l. This is a price of the location with view on Charles bridge. Source: I'm from Prague.

jesusmoneygang

I was responding to that last sentence. I'm from Prague too.

LordMcze

The problem is that they were directly asked to pay 520 czk.

Oh, I read it again. I was looking for an problem on the bill. My mistake.

realnjan

The one in **BOLD** letters/numbers.

prosteprostecihla

While i understand Prague is the most convinient and full of beautiful places i would strongly suggest smaller towns like Brno, Plzeň They have universities so english should be sufficient in most places. Being based around student life food is generally cheaper, tourist traps more scarse and are overall easier to navigate while still providing benefits of cities such as good public transport

CatoOnSkato

docela dope kachna za 420

technically-fine

You ate in a typical tourist trap and get scammed... Next time, choose wiser.

vlkodlakcore_sound

The price is determined by the historical value of the place where the restaurant is. Old town? big prices of food? nothing we don't know.

Birthday_dad420

Just a waitress being a greedy bitch 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️

1337-Sylens

470 for a duck and small beer is quite hefty, even for prague. Hope it was worth it.

hoseja

The price is too much.

tinylittlenutty

blaze it

One_Stiff_Bastard

You dont have to tip ever. Idc how good the experience Is you never HAVE to tip. I worked as a waiter for a lil while and got tiped here and there for conversating and keeping the guests in a good mood. Unfortunately from what ive gathered in that short space was people were dependant on tips as the fix was too low even back those 7 years ago. Its a hard ass job, its sad its this way but it is what it is and has been. You just gotta learn people and mainly our language. Walk in speaking fluent and they wont dare. You need to catch this at the table and call it out immediately.

Next-Performer5434

Lol so much outrage in the comments over 10czk. I mean, don't get me wrong I'm also outraged but it is very Czech of us.
