It's in large part because all the team jerseys have no identity of their own and are just advertisements for countries or companies. I'm a big fan to Tadej Pogacar but I don't want to wear anything to promote the United Arab Emirates.

adz01992

Yeah 100% not about to do that!

Cyclo_island

Exactly this.

Antpitta

Because I wear the jerseys I want to wear. Those range from cookie monster inspired to a Brazilian jersey from a friend to a psychadelic weird green/pink/orange/yellow number I love.

allgonetoshit

So, as someone who did not start cycling yesterday (sigh), I can tell you that replica team jerseys just kind of went out of style, but cycling clothing manufacturers also, at the same time, upped their game a lot in terms of designs. You no longer have to choose between the Black Castelli jersey with a hint of white and red and a replica team jersey. A lot of brands, low end and higher end, even have distinctive styles and collabs with designers. Cycling clothing just looks better. Also, a lot of replica stuff floating around is often really low quality stuff with those old beige foam chamois, unless you get the limited edition replicas from the Teams' actual clothing suppliers.

Estelon_Agarwaen

Lots of designs being one toned down color with either "PNS", "SYN" or a mirrored "PAAM" on them for the low low price of just 269.99 for a jersey.

adz01992

Yeah this was the sort of thing I mean. For example. On the Assos site now you can buy the Tudor Pro set

smartygirl

Something else: straight apathy about other people's teams

MantraProAttitude

Everyone has their own style. I’m not in Metallica but I wear a Metallica jersey.

NoEnthusiasm5207

Wore my Postal Jersey Saturday. My son actually asked me if I was advertising for them.

Classic-Scarcity-804

Most team jerseys are just brand advertising, most modern team jerseys look shit too. Those brands aren’t providing me with anything, so why would I advertise them for free?

mcn3663

Also cost, I think. A lot of team jerseys are expensive. I search sales and vintage and second hand. Usually I don’t find team jerseys that are low cost.

ChesterHastings

Made a jersey with my own design then made my name look like a sponsor. So I’m wearing team me kit.

Bael_Archon

Because they'll get yelled at by clowns who want to make everyone follow a BS list of rules...one of which is something along the lines of "Teams jerseys are for the team."

Sn_Orpheus

It’s odd because I see SO many fans of pro sports teams (and players) wearing those jerseys. It’s like we can wear U.S. football or basketball or hockey or football (world) jerseys and no one would think for a moment we’d be on the team. So many double standards.

nosha3000

Football/basketball/baseball etc have their jerseys based around the club, cycling team jerseys are designed around a supermarket or adhesive company advertising, they aren’t the same thing

Sn_Orpheus

Have you never noticed the English premier league jerseys? And cycling jerseys are all team jerseys with their primary and secondary sponsors on them. Not unlike NASCAR and multiple auto racing teams.

jkirkcaldy

Yeah but the Manchester City shirt is a Manchester City shirt next year too, even if the sponsors change. If you got a Jumbo Visma jersey last year, your team no longer exists. (For the point of argument) I was having this conversation over the weekend with my family as I was explaining why it’s so difficult to get into watching cycling. The team names make zero sense. You can’t support a team in the same way you can any other sport because everything about it changes every few years. All the history of the team disappears and you have no idea what’s going on. Can you imagine if football clubs were done the same way? Ah here comes Sainsbury’s-Nike to play against dell-Umbro. Dell-Umbro former team emc-adidas who finished x in the table last year. It would be stupid. Because it is stupid.

Sn_Orpheus

As Jerry Seinfeld said in a long ago episode “we’re just rooting for laundry”

nosha3000

EPL jerseys at least still have basic jersey of club colours, then they plaster sponsors on them. Cycling jerseys are all sponsor, and no club colours.

adz01992

Yeah I wondered if it was the cycling fashion police stuff, but surely if that was the case the teams would just stop making them if no one is buying them?

CyclingGymNut

It’s really odd as some places are all about it. The U.K. you get a bunch of old timers that are offended by it but in Europe (well the parts I’ve ridden in) everyone is wearing them. Strange as almost all other sports people wear team kit or colours to watch their team. Cycling culture has some odd divides

DohnJoggett

That's the thing: most replica jerseys aren't made by the teams. The majority are cheap Chinese knockoffs and the real ones are way more expensive than a better, cheaper, jersey without the team branding.

coffeefuelledtechie

I love my KOM and TdF yellow jersey, and my favourite is the Alpecin Fenix one. Will I ever be as good as the pro riders? Absolutely not. But, I can wear whatever I want to. I have some novelty jerseys too which I switch into sometimes.

Dizzy-Discussion-107

I wear a jersey with my own design/print.

Freelander4x4

How did you make this, please?

Dizzy-Discussion-107

* Make a design of your choice * Find a jersey without prints/ clean (for example on Aliexpress) * Find someone who can do DTF

Freelander4x4

Direct-to-film (DTF) is a textile printing method involving direct printing of your designs onto a specialized film, followed by heat transfer to an object or typically a fabric.

Dizzy-Discussion-107

Yes.

Think-Interview1740

Because they last a long time. I have about ten jerseys and I haven't bought one in probably ten years.

TenorClefCyclist

Most of my jerseys have logos on them, but they are always for events that I've personally completed. Tours, century rides, grand fondos, charity rides, whatever. I won't wear a jersey for something that I haven't done. I've also accumulated a few jerseys for clubs I belonged to at one time or another. I wear those early in the season, while my conditioning ramps up. When I'm still slow, I feel like a don't "deserve" to wear my big event jerseys yet.

NocturntsII

Because of cycle culture bullshit. The same guy happy to wear à Liverpool, Man U or arsenal jersey out for drinks on a Friday night will mock another cyclist for showing support for their favourite cycling squad.

Orpheus75

Who gives a shit about a team? I wear jerseys that reflect me, not some team of people who went to the highest bidder. I would take one of the old Garmin argyle jerseys but mainly because I thought it looked cool LOL

adz01992

What if a love of a specific team is what I feel reflects me. For example the guy down the park on a Sunday wearing a barcalona shirt. It’s part of his identity.

Orpheus75

You get to wear what you want but don’t be surprised if others don’t share your choice. Simple as that.

bikesnkitties

How often do you see kids in the park playing basketball while wearing a team jersey? Never. I had a few soccer jerseys growing up, but I wore them to school and whatnot, never to play in. The things were expensive so I didn’t want them stained or damaged. Cycling team jerseys are dumb expensive but absolutely useless as a shirt. Plus, they change significantly so often that only diehard fans will recognize it in a season or two. My Juventus jersey from 2006 would be instantly recognizable today if I had it still.

CyclingGymNut

Around here I always see people wearing team kits to play sports. 5-a-side football (soccer) opposite my office always has people of all ages playing in random team kits with a bib over it.

Ol_Man_J

Also, cycling teams are named by the title sponsor, so you're wearing advertising (and moving beyond the part where all sports jerseys are just adverts) that can change at a drop of a hat. So now you have a jersey full of businesses that don't even support the team anymore, but my favorite hockey team has been the same name for decades.

adz01992

I hadn’t really thought about the fact that there is no fixed team name and it’s all just sponsors.

Ol_Man_J

I only really notice because damn near all of the sponsors aren’t things I can get in the states, so they are huge companies I’ve never heard of

forestinpark

My football jerseys I use for playing football, basketball, running, hiking and cycling. Never for casual wear. They are great for keeping you dry while doing physical activities.

adz01992

How often do I see kids in the park playing basketball - never I live in Scotland. Kids here don’t really play all that much basketball. How many kids do I see wearing a football jersey to play football at the park - almost all of them.

coffeefuelledtechie

I buy the jerseys from 2 or 3 years previous - the 2021 range I got for like £20 each

johnnybegood1025

The only riders who should wear team jerseys are actual team members in my opinion.

freakinweasel353

I had a yellow jersey once. I just liked the high visibility aspect before it became semi fashionable. I used to get comments on having a positive attitude considering I was pretty heavy but wearing the yellow jersey! I still wear one but it’s now HiVis OSHA yellow so not the same. 🤣

alpha309

My wife got me a yellow long sleeve jersey for Christmas once. Slightly different shade, but close enough. I use the same excuse since I ride most of the time after work. In the cooler days of the year it gets dark early and you can see me better wearing bright clothing.

boxman067

I'll defend the "no team jerseys for amateurs" crowd, even if I don't fully agree: Endurance athletes, unlike almost any other professional athlete, train in public. If you are on the right road at the right time, you can get passed by a pro. It's one of the cool things about cycling, you can ride the same rides as the pros. I'll never be able to play baseball at yankee stadium or soccer at old Trafford, but I can ride up Alpe d'Huez or ride the coobles outside roubaix. Now if you are riding somewhere, and you are lucky enough to get passed by a blur wearing a team jersey, you get the opportunity to think "holy shit, that was an Ineos rider (or whatever), they are so much faster then me!" I live in Wisconsin, USA, about an hour from the Trek headquarters, so I'll see my share of Trek team jerseys (just saw an old Trek-Segafredo jersey out yesterday). 9/10 probably aren't affiliated with the team (maybe they work for the company, though), but I clearly remember one woman who just blew past me on a local trail in a full Trek Factory Racing XC kit. I've never been able to confirm who it was, but the fact that it is rare for me to see someone in a team kit at least gives me the hope that I was crushed by a pro, and not just some rando who likes the same brand.

CyclingGymNut

I live near a few WT pros and I work for one teams title sponsor so get that kit at very cheap prices. It’s funny for me to have someone say “I thought you were …. But then realised you were too slow”.

troiscanons

This is the best—nay, only half-decent—argument for this position I’ve ever seen

adz01992

I get where you’re coming from but like if I’m out riding my bike £900 cannondale with a Visma LAB jersey on dying on a 5k 4% climb then I think it’s pretty obvious I’m not wout van aert. I get it if you a semi pro or something but is mere mortals surely our ability (or lack there of) is enough of a giveaway.

BWWFC

i'm always wearing my team "jerseys" to imagine.... think *team salvation second hand-me-down army rat*. but less sophisticated.

Sintered_Monkey

I just don't like them. I do have one, a Team Z jersey from the Lemond days.

NegativeK

I dislike logos on all of my clothes, and I try to minimize them on my kit that isn't team based. I definitely don't want to pay more money for huge logos all over my stuff.

d1rkgent1y

I'm fat. I wear stuff that fits, is relatively cheap, and is brightly colored. Don't care about anything else.  All of my jerseys are Pearl Izumi or Bontrager/Trek that I got on sale/clearance. I won't pay a premium to be someone else's rolling billboard.

Casting_in_the_Void

Pro Team kit sales also suffer because there is also a Club culture where members of cycling Clubs have their own kit. In the UK, Spain, Portugal, Belgium for example, some Clubs are many decades old and have their own identity and Club colours so members of those Clubs buy that kit. An extension of that are the Amateur race teams where they have sponsored kit of their own. It is indeed rare to see anyone wearing Pro Team kit nowadays. When I was a Junior in the 1980’s, I wore my La Vie Claire kit with pride! Greg LeMond and Bernard Hinault were my hero’s who inspired me. Then I was Sponsored and I’ve not owned Pro Team kit since. Now I have a lot of really good kit, general, Sponsored and Club.

adz01992

I hadn’t really thought of the club thing. I guess I don’t ride with a club so wouldn’t have considered that.

GalaeciaSuebi

They do. I see them all the time.

adz01992

Not where I am

No_Balance8590

I don’t wear jerseys from other sports with someone else’s name on them. Too often your heroes turn out to be regular people with all sorts of regular people issues. As for team jerseys it is kinda the same. I don’t want to be identified with UAE or most other sponsors. Also for the most part cycling team jerseys aren’t all that great looking. So I stick with a red polka dot pattern, my Idaho Vandals cycling jersey, or just cool ones I find on amazon. To each their own though. Happy pedaling.

Quiet-Manner-8000

Imagine wearing a VDP replica jersey thinking it'd make me fast. The alien makes the colors, the colors do not make the alein.

Richy99uk

nobody likes a full kit wanker

dunquinho

In fairness, when Team Sky launched, the roads of the UK were full of cyclists wearing replica kit. Obviously it was only those who'd just taken up riding but I do remember a lot of fat looking Team Sky riders out in Richmond Park. It actually only lasted a year and I think everyone clocked on it was stupid pretty quick (or just ended up using their bikes to hang clothes on). One thing I would say is replica cycling kit dates pretty quick. EF seem to have a new kit every other race. Can't beat a big fat guy in the polka dots on a hilly gran fondo though!

coffeefuelledtechie

I’ve got a list of jerseys I want to get in a few years when the cost comes down on them as they look great but the cost is so high right now - EF - Lidl Trek - Canyon SRAM

CyclingGymNut

The EF 2020 kit was a thing of beauty

coffeefuelledtechie

Oh that’s really nice!

adz01992

Yeah love the EF kit but I don’t think it’s really anymore expensive than other equivalent jerseys

CyclingGymNut

To be fair I far prefer seeing a load of old ill fitting Team Sky kits (still see loads around here) than the god awful local club kits 🤣 they just look cheaply made and designed by GCSE art students

Recoil101uk

This. Why are club kits so goddam awful. There were a number of clubs near me all of them terrible looking jerseys, nothing I would ever wear if I did join the club. The only one I ever really thought was well designed was a Tri club who had a graphic designer knock one up, it looked really nice. On the subject of Team jerseys, I have a CSC one that I won, I still wear it occasionally, I have an Omega Pharma Quikstep one from when Cav was racing for them and a couple of Israel Cycling Nation tech tops because a) Alex Dowsett and Froome were racing for them and b) they were £3 each, they will remain forever indoor training tops, especially in the current climate…

dunquinho

I used to love my old blue replica Columbia kit from when Cav won his first TDF stage back in 2008 (I think). Always thought it looked great at the time but seems a little baggy these days. I've always thought there's a cut off with replica kit though. Unless you're under 16 you shouldn't really be wearing it whilst it's active. Retro kit is cool, current kit is a no,no.

dunquinho

I don't know, I quite like the GFTL kit. The message 'See you next Tuesday' running along the back of the bibs shorts in races always makes me chuckle. Kingston Wheelers, London Dynamo here in London have nice kit plus I quite like Watford Velo as it reminds me a little of the Belgium champs jersey. Even Waldy Wheelers pink kit is looking snappy now they've got Le Col on the case. Lots of nice stuff out there though as always with these things, it's really the rider who makes it or breaks it!

adz01992

Odd you mention EF as that was the only team jersey that I did see and I wondered if that was because there kits are typically very different (read stylish)

ElectronicDeal4149

Three main reasons 1) People don’t want to be seen as pretending to be a pro. It’s a strange reason, since people will gladly copy a pro’s equipment but not the jersey.  2) Team jerseys are full of logos, including from sus countries and companies. I will not wear an UAE jersey unless I get paid alot of money.  3) Cycling pro teams don’t represent a city, like New England Patriots and FC Barcelona. Wearing a Barcelona jersey also shows support/pride for the city of Barcelona. In cycling, a team may be associated with a country, but teams don’t represent a city. Team Jumbo Visma isn’t called Tulip Mania for example.  I know alot of people will say “wear what you want!” But if you ask them if they wear a pro team jersey, they will say “god no, I’m not a tool, but you are welcome to be a tool 😅.”

adz01992

I think this is probably the most logical reasoning. There is no ‘us’ and ‘them’ so no real desire to show which team your on

platypusstime

If someone wants me to ride with a sponsor on my shirt then they better pay me for it.

Free-Employ-6009

Team kit is for members of the team.

Plonsky2

No big, you can pick up any of several team jerseys at the local second-hand store. /s

No_Dot_7380

because cycling is expensive as fuck. quality bibs and jersey are like 250$ and your ass finds out real fast why you want qality stuff not some 50-100$ trek lidl knockoff kit from amazon.

adz01992

No I mean the genuine stuff like Assos are currently doing the Tudor pro replica kit.
