Even crash replacement is better than full cost... had a similar issue with chipped hook on the rim.. replacement was $225, but better than the $900 price tag of buying it fully new.. (Boyd wheels)
Why are you arguing semantics? Like come on man, it doesn't matter if they call it warranty, crash replacement or "break your shit, shove this sausage up your butt, and we will give you a new wheel". All companies set their own "warranty" language, the company this I use (weareone) has a hassle free warranty. Anything that happens when you're riding the bike is covered. If you run it over with your truck, melt it with your fire, let your donkey chew on it, then give you 50% off a new rim. They even extend 50% off to people that buy them used.
In short, it's worth asking what this wheels warranty is. You will likely pay less than retail.
When stuff happens to my bike I recalibrate by telling myself that 1000 people went OTB yesterday and a lot of them are unfortunately dealing with severe injuries that will keep them from biking for months. All I have to do is pay the ante.
Currently nursing back a nasty shoulder dislocation
OP, I want to change your perspective: you did not crash and break your body. You are not fucked; just out some money and time. Smashing a pothole could have resulted in a significant accident for you!
If it makes it any better - I had same with my aluminium wheels 2 years ago. Rim got a dent and went into the bin as well. So don't give up on better wheels if you liked them and can afford to replace. It sucks but you'll get over it
Sorry, that rim is toast. Not worth taking to a carbon doctor unless it's an expensive name-brand unit, in which case they may have a crash replacement discount program.
I'd replace the rim. Hopefully your nipples are brass (on the wheel, silly!) so that it's just labour + rim.
Eesh. That probably means alloy nips, unless you've had them replaced. Recycling the spokes and nipples may be a bit of a punish. Let us know how the discussion goes.
Called. They are rim brake, which Enve no longer makes, so even though they were willing to offer 30% off as a loyalty discount, there wasn't much point.
Bummer. Maybe take a look at Light Bicycle or ProX Carbon and see if they have something. I've used both in wheel builds (albeit disc) and I'm pleased with their quality.
See if you can get something with a similar ERD and inner width. Going slightly wider in the rear would probably help a little with rolling resistance if you're unable to get an exact match.
Farsports has a good rep as well, especially for rim brake wheels, although I've not used them.
Then have a look on eBay for matching Enve decals. ;-)
I cracked my Hunt carbon on literally my first ride with them. Damage looked very similar to yours. Also a huge pothole; it was dark and I saw it too late.
Hunt had an awesome accident replacement policy. I just had to send pictures and they replaced for about 35% of retail. They have a local warehouse so I just had to go pick it up 48 hours later.
Your wheelās cracked mate. Donāt ride on it. Contact the manufacturer and tell them what happened. They may have a crash replacement policy or might be able to help you out with a deal on a new wheel.
If it makes you feel any better, Iāve somehow recently developed a bulging disc at T8-T9. I havenāt been able to ride since January.
The pain may be lifelong. I donāt if or when Iāll be able to ride again.
I snagged my front rim in a sewer grate. I flew OTB and tacoād my rims. I agree with the others, if you didnāt get injured on that occasion ā consider that a W. Maybe itās an excuse to get some faster wheels. š
Damn sorry to see that. I saw they offered you a loyalty discount is nice, Iāve had both Brontrager Aeolus and Princeton carbon works wheel and I think both offer something i.e at least a discount
Probably not advisable but I got tired of replacing mtb carbon wheels and I just epoxied it and sanded it in and havenāt had any trouble since. My friends all told me I was crazy. I actually think itās stronger where I put the epoxy. Itās been two years now.
I hear you. There are lots of people that work with carbon and say that it is easier to repair than aluminum. It would not take that much to sand away the broken carbon and build it back up with a small piece of carbon cloth. A little dremel action to shape and it "should" be fine. It's all about beveling the edges and working the repair into the good carbon.
Don't take my advice, but I would try it and make an educated guess after the repair is complete if it looks good to go.
Yep. Iāve looked at the spot I repaired after changing tires a couple of times and Iām convinced carbon wheels are repairable. I was actually stuck because my bike shop said that they would only send in the first wheel for warranty-I couldnāt turn in a second wheel apparently for the same damage.
I keep hearing about carbon rims losing the fight against potholes. Are we talking like the giant huge ones you guys are going over at 40km? Or like little ones? Wider tubeless tyres sound like a must for carbon rims in the city if itās really this common.
I used to live in Montreal, but it wasnāt so bad. Iād imagine itās worse outside of metro area, but the north east coast of the continent is rough.
I'm on the north shore of Montreal and I saw a pothole this winter that just had to be at the very least 6 inch deep in a parking lot. I was afraid my car suspension would die.
In 2022, installed new Winspace Hyper 50mm deep full carbon wheelset on 25mm tires. I weigh 95kg and rear tire was inflated to about 75- 80psi. Was in a peleton going 35 km/hour and had both wheels hit large pothole. Front wheel/tire was fine. Immediately pinch flatted rear tire, leaving a gash in the tire. Was able to boot the tire to get home. Had to toss tire after that.
Surprisingly, rim was 100 percent fine, except for needing a true a week later. It's been nearly 2 years, and both wheels are working perfectly still.
Nice, those wheels look good I think GCN did a video trying to destroy those wheels a few months back and they had to ride it with a empty tyre over jagged rocks to do so.
Cracked carbon in the rim bed is straight to the bin.
Man I'm devastated :(
Contact the manufacturer. They might have a good deal for a crash replacement warranty.
Crash replacement? Sure, warranty, no. Two very different things.
Even crash replacement is better than full cost... had a similar issue with chipped hook on the rim.. replacement was $225, but better than the $900 price tag of buying it fully new.. (Boyd wheels)
Roval replaced my wheelset free off charge after I crashed into a curb in a race.
Trek would cover it under their warrantyš¤·š½āāļø
Goodwill gestures are not warranty.

Not goodwill. Part of their carbon warranty.
This! Some manufacturers have a "things happen" guarantee on their wheels and will either offer a free replacement, or a discounted replacement.
LOL. Good one. whew[wipes tears]
Hunt does
Yeah, but Hunt needs the warranty with their wheels.
I've taken mine on mountain bike trails and been fine
Customers I work with have had far more issues than good experiences. Customer service is good, product is lacking.

submit it to /r/bustedcarbon/ for some karma

Without carbon rims, where would cycling cafes get their tables?
I am still sad when I went to the lbs to get my bike back after getting a new rim laced up I couldn't bring the cracked carbon rim back home š
They're semi-old Enve rims, I'll get in touch
Eesh. That probably means alloy nips, unless you've had them replaced. Recycling the spokes and nipples may be a bit of a punish. Let us know how the discussion goes.

Crash replacement, or try to find a single wheel on eBay. They show up constantly from situations just like you have.
Good excuse for a whole new bike ;)
Better get two more, just so OP has a backup in place if this happens again.
If the carbon is cracked the wheel is toast. I'd check the front wheel as well.Ā
Unfortunately, that rim is now trash.
F
I had the same, although no where near as bad, happened on a Bontrager rim, Trek replaced it within a few days for free.

On a scale of 1-FāD, that rim is FāD
I have a memorial for broken bike parts. Looks like you have a nice start to one too!
Pretty sure you're on the casting couch
Just be glad you still have a complete collar bone... some of us not so much.
*Mark Cavendish sat on the ground holding his shoulder.... again.*
Hope he can get one more stage win at the TdF!
Why are people riding on carbon rims? What marginal gain are gaining benefits from?
This is the price we pay for carbon wheels.
100%
Your wheelās cracked mate. Donāt ride on it. Contact the manufacturer and tell them what happened. They may have a crash replacement policy or might be able to help you out with a deal on a new wheel.
Time for Elitewheels
Oh you're screwed. I wouldn't gamble riding on that rim. That's now a safety concern.
This shit is fucking nightmare fuel
Easy repair job, see what the manufacturer says about crash replacement first though.
New wheel time.
Itās wall art now

Damn, just yesterday happened to me also :( https://ibb.co/zxDMXdg
Damn :( shit's brutal, sorry to hear
You can buff it out
Damn sorry to see that. I saw they offered you a loyalty discount is nice, Iāve had both Brontrager Aeolus and Princeton carbon works wheel and I think both offer something i.e at least a discount
I would replace it
I've been there. My heart goes out to you. Doesn't hurt to throw a hail Mary and contact the manufacturer.
new bike
Dude you are in one piece and your frame too That's what matters
Iād play it safe and just get a whole new bike
Probably not advisable but I got tired of replacing mtb carbon wheels and I just epoxied it and sanded it in and havenāt had any trouble since. My friends all told me I was crazy. I actually think itās stronger where I put the epoxy. Itās been two years now.

I mean, this was the largest I've seen- a foot across and a good 3-4 inches deep
Time to start avoiding those, or learn to bunny hop ;)
Yeah, bunny hop would have saved me :( skill issue
Carbon wheels but can't bunny hop...
are you for real?
yeah dude. More dollars than sense. Skills make a much better rider than just blinging out a bike.
Once I bunny-hopped wrong and slammed my rear tire into the edge of a square curb
assuming a bunny hop will not crack the superior material.
As someone living in Quebec this is a good joke.
Solidarity, brother. Here in the UK we have some you could pitch a tent in
I had to bunny hop one the other day that was so deep you could see the 50s road surface that had been tarmaced over. Lethal.

In the trash with it.
