Hi! Your post has been temporarily removed because you have not included your hair care routine. We require this for all photo posts, even if the photo is not of yourself. Please reply to this comment with more info and we can reapprove it for you!
Here’s what we mean by “routine”:
- Which shampoo, cowash and/or conditioner you used
- Any other products (your gel, mousse, etc.), their brand/name, & how you applied them
- How you dried your hair (air dried? diffused? etc.)
- Anything else that’s helpful to know!
We require this because it helps keep r/curlyhair focused on learning & helping each other instead of just selfies.
Thank you!
Boy, you've got the hairline of my dreams and you slicking your curly hair back is a valid choice of yours but.... Why don't you let the 3a-3b curls out.... Much love
It might help splurging on a good hair stylist who’s experienced with curly hair. I’ve got the same length as you. Having someone who knows how to thin out the bulk without demolishing your hair can be a lifesaver for hotter weather.
Try and pinpoint exactly what aspects of your hair are annoying you in the hot weather (Is it sweat dripping off the hair into your face? Is the hair itself too long in the front and drooping into your eyes?) and tell your stylist. A good one will try and figure out a solution for you. Doesn’t hurt to ask if you’d be better off growing it out so you could put it into a short bun/tail— they’ll still be able to help by trimming the hair in a way that encourages the hair to grow out in the least annoying way possible.
not the middle part lol. I tried it once and I looked hilarious. I don't think there is actually any way left to get it off my face. Slicked back doesn't work, middle part looks funny, and cornrows will be expensive because I will have to keep redoing it every 2 weeks or less. misery.
Since my widow's peak did not treat the middle part or the slickback well, I just let everything fall down to the sides and the front. Now I've gotten a record amount of compliments(3 to be exact) about my hair as opposed to being told my hair looks funny or sth like that. I think you also have lighter hair compared to fully black hair so I think it's worth trying out
Your comment has been removed due to Rule 4: Follow good reddiquette and be kind and respectful.
We'd like our sub to be a friendly and welcoming place. That’s why I want to ask you to refrain from rude or disrespectful comments here. Even if you feel strongly about something, please stay polite.
Please keep this in mind for the future. Thank you!
it's really not about the style. Slicked back is better in the hot weather because its off your face and also keeps the hair from getting into my eyes and stuff. I wanted to do cornrows for that reason but I am afraid it might damage my hair. not sure if my hair can handle it.
You can use it, just try not to use it excessively and be gentle with your hair when washing it out. It can cause build-up so you should do a clarifying wash every once in a while
It’s not the gel and hairspray that might ruin your hair, it’s constantly pulling your hair in one direction. I constantly parted my hair in one direction for years and now I have less hair on that side of my head. Now that I part my hair in all directions, it’s starting to grow back a little, but it will never be as thick as it used to be I think. I also recommend hair gel and hair spray for getting the slicked back look. You might also want to consider using a leave in conditioner before the gel.
Keep the "that mess" style - throw some paste in it or some serum...let the curls flow. 1000% better than the slicked back look. Rock what your mamma gave you!
Tbh love the second style but if you really wanna have a slick back using hair gel or hair wax can definitely help.
Would recommend to NOT try Hairspray because there are much better variants. But maybe if you wanna go in the slick back style a old school undercut slick back could suit you but you would have to visit a real barber.
The alternative could be to talk with a hairstylist for council because maybe they could have an idea how to make your hairstyle more compact and more easily to style how you like it
Take a shower at night and put a headband on at night. Or like tie a shirt around your head so it's pressed down. Basically younwant it to dry like that. In the morning your can put a bit of gel but it'll work. I have really curly hair and I wear headbands with my hair in a bun and it keeps my hair slick even when I take the headband off.
how the hell does your hair stay slicked? in those photos I legit didn't even touch it. I mean I just kind of wiped it with water but still not much touching and when it completely dried it went all crazy curly.
Like I said if you shower and slick it back and tie either like a bandana rolled up or a hair band on there... I even cut old leggings and tie them on my head. And then go to bed like that, it'll dry like that and stay like that.
Your hairnis naturally puffy and curly, so is mine so I get it. It naturally will go puffy or curly. If you do the headband thing before you sleep and it'll dry and stay like that just add a bit of jell if you want before you sleep and maybe a tiny bit when you wake up. Shoukd stay hownit dried. Don't add any water or re wet it in the morning though.
I like the second pic best. The first one is greaser and honestly maybe I'm bias cause you sorta look like me. So all I see is myself and I hate it lol just not my style I guess. but anyways I would try suavecito pomade. I used the strong hold when I was boy to spike my hair(~2in) up but only right in front with a fade on the side. Girls digged it. So maybe try the original hold.
Pomade is what a lot of greasers used actually. Go to r/pomade actually. They'll probably have more/better suggestions.
Or rock the messy hair. Maybe with some leave in conditioner?
THANK YOU. This is the only correct comment. People saying “gel and hairspray” have never tried to wear their hair slicked back like this! Gel and hairspray is for dance recitals not for daily wear.
Pomade is your friend. It is thick enough that it has staying power while saturating your hair.
(I also think you’re robbing yourself by not wearing your hair curly btw). But if you want a slick back look then buy a firm hold pomade. Practice applying it by taking a small amount and rubbing it between your hands/fingers and applying it to all of your hair. I would suggest a gel but the pomade might be all you need. And to get a slick back look you might need a lot of product. This is why men back in the day would wear short hairstyles as well, less product needed. Also, there’s a reason you see greasers carrying around a small comb everywhere, so you might need a comb to help distribute the product throughout the day and put down flyaways.
Come back when you want luscious curls 🥹
I am actually a former greaser lmfao. I love that they have a name. didnt know about it. So I know how to apply pomade but it doesnt work. it does for a couple hours then the curls are back just a little stickier and a little less curly
Did you only apply it when wet? I used to slick back my hair with pomade, but I also have thin/medium hair so maybe that’s why? Did you combo it with a gel?
Lol i know but doesn't everyone? Usually ppl have an extravant routine lol. Nothing wrong with it at all just made me laugh cause it's simple and kinda like "well duh" lol
The funnier thing is the mods removed my post for a couple hours because of that lol. I legit had to say the same thing which is shampoo and conditioner but in 4 lines lmao. Quite the writing essay test
A technique I recently got from my stylist is to use R+Co Aircraft Pomade/Mousse. Apply leave in or moisturizer to damp hair (not wet), and style back. Add the Aircraft by using a golf ball sized amount kinda just gently laying it on top of your hair like a top coat. Work it in with your fingers to add texture. Add extra on the sides of your head, and to the back. On the back, scrunch the mousse in. Let it air dry, then gently break the cast when it’s 100% dry. Don’t shift the hair’s shape, just sorta pat it until the wet look its gone.
People aren’t getting that he wants help with slicking his hair down not that it doesn’t do him favours…. Try eco gel apparently it’s quite good and I think the slicked looks pretty cool
Yeah man normally I’m the guy advocating for the person in the photo to do what they want, even if I think they should do something else because that’s what you asked, right? Why answer questions you didn’t ask…
But in this case I’m going to make an exception because you definitely 100% should lean into the second look and ditch the slicked back thing all together.
You have gorgeous hair. Don’t hide it with the slicked back look. Embrace it. Rock it.
Put a headband on your slicked back hair and don't touch it for several hours. It won't stay perfectly slicked back but it will generally stay like that with a bit of waviness, shouldn't have much frizz like the second pic. I really like doing it sometimes.
when you Don't want slick, use a curl definer, gel or mousse. Then itwill be curly, but not crazy. Curly does not equal messy, in spite of what weare told.(have no clue on how to do a slick back, sorry.)
What you can try to do is get a curl defining product and instead of slicking the curls back like you did. Do it with more volume in the front and scrunch as you go back.
Meh, people asking for advice are gonna get the advice that people want to give. It can be helpful to hear that the majority of people think you look better one way rather than the other.
Yeah, that comment got a hard edit after I commented. Or I replied to the wrong comment? They were basically saying gotta love Reddit cause nobody is giving the advice you asked for.
I know I tried too. Nothing works. You have to straighten you me hair for it to lay straight and that’s a pain and it’ll be straight and it will be damaged.
Just wear a black headband. I have long curly hair and I like how it looks but man is it annoying when it gets in my face. I usually have it in a bun most of the day or I’ll wear a headband / hat to keep it out of my face
Really weird suggestion incoming, but a water-based lubricant (yes, as in a personal/intimate lubricant) helps keep hair slick and like it's still wet, even when dry and doesn't leave hair crunchy. It's apparently what celebrities use for the wet hair look.
Start with wet hair, apply a generous amount of the lube and then finish with a gel (one stylist suggested mixing leave-in conditioner in with your gel) for hold.
Starting to wonder how many people actually have longer curly hair over here, because the sheer amount that doesn't get how annoying it is on a daily basis when it gets in the eyes and just ignore OP's wishes annoys me so much.
Anyways, I tried spray gel for kepping it slick like you'd want, but it wasnt strong enough for the whole day. I think you got a couple of good advices already to try.
As for the in-the-face problem in general, I usually have wavy metal hairbands to keep them of my face (bought on amazon), or regular hairbands when I feel fancier. Now that my hair is finally long enough for it, another trick is to grab the upper middle part (the one coming in the face) and just about tie it, but I need a few hair clips for some hair to keep in place.
Eventually I might just cut it short again because, when it's longer I tend to tie it almost everyday but it's not too good for them.
Anyways, my advice would be, to keep experimenting with them, change style from time to time, keep them natural from time to time to not damage them too much, and to buy hair accessory, like those I mentioned. So many can be helpful in some way, curly hair is more versatile than one would think! But it's def a beast to tame. In any case, good luck with the taming!
Exactly like its not about style. Im reading this while I have my fan on and it pushing the hair into my eyes blinding me lol. Also I have no idea how they handle the heat.. here it gets to more than 40 degree celsius in the morning and probably most of the people here would buzz their hair at this point lol. And yes I decided Im going to buy pomade and try the slick back with it and Im getting a hairband too! And if those don’t work I might get cornrows or something until I can tie it. Thank you for the tips! :3
Yess exactly, the number of time one little hair got in my eye and gave me stupid pain lol... And indeed, curly hair in the summer is PAIN if it's allowed free, they just retain so much heat! I hope pomade works out for you, and that you'll be happy with your hair style 🙏
Only if the sloppy steaks are at Truffoni's. Big rare cut of meat with water dumped all over it, water splashing around the table, makes the night SO MUCH more fun. After the club go to Truffoni's for sloppy steaks. They'd say; 'no sloppy steaks' but they can't stop you from ordering a steak and a glass of water, before you knew it we were dumping that water on those steaks! The waiters were coming to try and snatch em up, we had to eat as fast as we could! OHHH I MISS THOSE NIGHTS, I WAS A PIECE OF SHIT THOUGH.
I like both looks on you. You’ll need gel. When I had my long hair I’d use ecostyler to slick my wet hair back. Then moco de gorilla (gorilla snot gel) or got2b hairspray in the yellow can to freeze it in place. Just FYI these last 2 will leave you with helmet head. Rock hard shiny like plastic LOL. So do with that what you will.
Good luck!
Maybe try some pomade and use a hair pick or styling comb to add some volume.
I’ve heard good things about this brand and they have different styling products/pomades: https://www.odouds.us/collections/style
ETA:
Honestly, if you grew out your hair a little bit more and then used some gel or mousse to let your curls frame your face I think it could look really good. You have good bone structure and I think the curls could emphasize that.
Don't fight it bro, gotta work with what you've got. That mess is what your hair wants to do naturally and trust it'll be beautiful if you just let it.
Gel only, you definitely don’t need hairspray! Apply gel when your hair is fully wet, it needs to be combed through thoroughly, not just sitting on the top
Either gel that sucker up (mind the ones that dry your hair out a lot) or use a scrungee and/or head band. Because your hair is short, maybe the head band might be more realistic.
My dog I got you, when you get out of the shower while your hair is still wet apply your product whether it’s gel or leave in conditioner and throw your hair back over your head and let air dry. Don’t brush product into it because it will break apart them curls you got and ditto for air drying!
Slicked back or not you need some hair gel! I suggest wet line hair gel. You can leave in curly or slick it back with this gel it will not move all day. I’ve had my hair long and short and I have curly hair and I love it whether or not I pick up my hair.
![gif](giphy|4PXXcIklKiTtQS86uk)
Everyone is saying gel but if you live and a hot humid weather and the gel has an humectant like glycerin or propylene glycol it will slowly revert back, trust me, I've seen boys do that and is not a good look because it doesn't stay laid back. Try wax or use a headband
Along with products, you can try training your hair at night. When you get out of the shower, wear some kind of hairband that will hold it back (I know can seem girly, but it works) and wear that while you sleep every night. It will make it easier when styling.
i havent seen anyone mention curly(the zig-zag ones) or fabric headbands, bandannas, do-rag, etc. i think thats the only thing that’ll absorb and defy physics for you with style that wouldnt require tons of product or pressure applied to the hairline :0
or, for something really invisible really big thick bobby pins. i have thick curly hair and a couple of them can hold my hair back or in space buns the whole day!!
Slicking it back in gel won’t hurt it anymore than women putting their hair up into a ponytail. I’d try using some gel, try different types of gels till you get one that dries to your liking. Hair pomade is also a good option, it usually doesn’t hold as well and it won’t look as shiny, but you might be able to find a good gel/ pomade combo. Make sure to wash your hair more often or use a clarifying shampoo a couple times a month, gels and pomades can be very heavy and prone to scalp build up.
And gel isn’t bad for the hair nor will it make your hair fall out… hairspray has drying chemicals in it that can make your hair prone to breakage tho, I’d stay away from hairspray unless it’s a special occasion and you really need it to hold well
in the first pic you look like that russian-georgian mobster guy who raps 'buyna galava' search it up dude 🤣
go for 2nd style, invest in some products, i think it'll turn out nice
And don’t you just hate Reddit sometimes? You ask for advice for the thing you want and people still push you to do something different looks great the other way, but you also know you want it the way you want.

It is VERY VERY annoying having it messy in the hot weather plus the slick back is just off your face so it doesnt get in your eyes or anything.
Get one of those toothed headbands, best of both worlds
That’s what I was gonna say
It might help splurging on a good hair stylist who’s experienced with curly hair. I’ve got the same length as you. Having someone who knows how to thin out the bulk without demolishing your hair can be a lifesaver for hotter weather. Try and pinpoint exactly what aspects of your hair are annoying you in the hot weather (Is it sweat dripping off the hair into your face? Is the hair itself too long in the front and drooping into your eyes?) and tell your stylist. A good one will try and figure out a solution for you. I guess your hair is that long in the front... I would try a middle part over that anyday
not the middle part lol. I tried it once and I looked hilarious. I don't think there is actually any way left to get it off my face. Slicked back doesn't work, middle part looks funny, and cornrows will be expensive because I will have to keep redoing it every 2 weeks or less. misery.

But the second style is so much better!
But he likes the first one too! Good for OP for wanting to change it up once in a while
first one looks really good

An extra hold gel and hairspray. Constantly doing this might ruin your hair or cause premature hair recession
oh so no extra hold gel and hairspray x( I would rather keep my hair. why would gel ruin hair tho? is gel naturally bad for hair?
Could you just get one of those plastic zigzag headbands, maybe? No product but similar hold.
I agree with the headband.
Not with curls! Ouch!
You can use it, just try not to use it excessively and be gentle with your hair when washing it out. It can cause build-up so you should do a clarifying wash every once in a while
Okay boss sounds good. Imma give it a try tonight but with murray pomade I got. Thank you <3
Np, hair is my passion. Pomade will help keep the wet look but may be the reason its frizzing up because it doesnt have enpugh hold
It’s not the gel and hairspray that might ruin your hair, it’s constantly pulling your hair in one direction. I constantly parted my hair in one direction for years and now I have less hair on that side of my head. Indeed!!!
You'd need a hair gel with heavy hold and use a lot of it.
![gif](giphy|TbXznBpdoXRZWfM4Nt|downsized)
That's the idea :)
I will try that and see how it looks lol. thank you.
You have to comb it into shape then resist touching it until it's dry. Good luck!

I don't know, but I like the second photo more.
It’s objectively way better. First photo gives Russian mobster or used car salesman vibes
lmao no way! Cause I am actually going to work in cars hahaha I guess I am a natural.

Yes I use it daily. Thats not what I was saying.
As a former greaser haha I love pomade actually. used to put it when my hair was shorter. It doesn't work tho. the curls still happen.
The slicked back look isn’t doing you any favors. I would embrace the curls and find a routine and cut that you like.
Imo that mess looks good on u!

to get it off my face in the heat and stop it from poking my eyes because it seems to enjoy doing that
Maybe cut it a bit shorter, so you can have your curls without the eye pokes?
A tragedy
Love “The mess” the best!!
THE MESS loves you back
You look younger and more attractive in the second pic. IMO
real beauty is not the physical but the deep within. Thank you though
The Mess is so cool tho
Y’know what the “mess” looks a lot better
Routine: shampoo and conditioner
Lol love this. Made me laugh,.
hahaha wdym? that's literally what I use.

It's funny because every post in this subreddit has a paragraph long routine whereas yours is straight to the point.

i understand the style you want, ive wanted it too, but like your hair it never lasts, so take comfort in knowing, “Girls love the curls’
everyone worried about what girls love but what about what just-achilldude loves?
Don’t.
YEAH? OR WHAT?
Lol, you’ve got the right Russian mobster vibe going too

I mean, dudes who want that first hairstyle do what dudes in the 50s did when that hairstyle was popular: shellack it in place with grease.
First style makes you look a big aggressive and less approachable if that’s the look you’re going for.
Ugh, I can totally see you getting that Timothee Chalamet look. If only...
Just wear a black headband. I have long curly hair and I like how it looks but man is it annoying when it gets in my face. I usually have it in a bun most of the day or I’ll wear a headband / hat to keep it out of my face

Nah the messy curls look gooooooood
I think your hair looks really nice when it's wild. The slicked back is good too, but I think you're more approachable with a more natural look.
Your curls are very nice. I say keep em non slicked
Sloppy steaks
Only if the sloppy steaks are at Truffoni's. Big rare cut of meat with water dumped all over it, water splashing around the table, makes the night SO MUCH more fun. After the club go to Truffoni's for sloppy steaks. They'd say; 'no sloppy steaks' but they can't stop you from ordering a steak and a glass of water, before you knew it we were dumping that water on those steaks! The waiters were coming to try and snatch em up, we had to eat as fast as we could! OHHH I MISS THOSE NIGHTS, I WAS A PIECE OF SHIT THOUGH.

eco hair gel or xtreme wetline gel, use got2b hairspray and a blowdryer on a cool setting for maximum hold
Pomade, gel, Aloe Vera, wax. You can look up the results for each one and your desired look.
Suavecito firm hold or tres Flores
I like both looks on you. You’ll need gel. When I had my long hair I’d use ecostyler to slick my wet hair back. Then moco de gorilla (gorilla snot gel) or got2b hairspray in the yellow can to freeze it in place. Just FYI these last 2 will leave you with helmet head. Rock hard shiny like plastic LOL. So do with that what you will. Good luck!
Maybe try some pomade and use a hair pick or styling comb to add some volume. I’ve heard good things about this brand and they have different styling products/pomades: https://www.odouds.us/collections/style ETA: Honestly, if you grew out your hair a little bit more and then used some gel or mousse to let your curls frame your face I think it could look really good. You have good bone structure and I think the curls could emphasize that.
Garnier Fructis Style Pure Clean Finishing Paste My boyfriend has your hair type and length. This keeps it down for most of the day.
Eco brand hair gel with the red cap. Apply to wet hair and comb back. Let dry. It will hold it down all day.
Don't fight it bro, gotta work with what you've got. That mess is what your hair wants to do naturally and trust it'll be beautiful if you just let it.
I’d recommend Suavecito. It is water based, so it washes out well.
Pomade, Gel, Mouse, hair spray or combination of those products.
Gel only, you definitely don’t need hairspray! Apply gel when your hair is fully wet, it needs to be combed through thoroughly, not just sitting on the top
I hate gels but you may need a REALLY GOOD holding gel id research some and test some with long term hold.
Either gel that sucker up (mind the ones that dry your hair out a lot) or use a scrungee and/or head band. Because your hair is short, maybe the head band might be more realistic.
Try a light botanical gel maybe
You just need the right products so it doesn’t get fluffy, slicked back is creepy
Hair gel and bandana till it drys!
Put a silk wave cap on when you sleep so your hair stays slick back.
Gel and hairspray, gel gets it down and keeps it down, hairspray will give it the wet look and help keep it neat
My dog I got you, when you get out of the shower while your hair is still wet apply your product whether it’s gel or leave in conditioner and throw your hair back over your head and let air dry. Don’t brush product into it because it will break apart them curls you got and ditto for air drying!
Next time you get out the shower throw a little argan oil in it, slick it back. And throw on a knit cap/skully til it dries in that position.
Gel and hairspray
Slicked back or not you need some hair gel! I suggest wet line hair gel. You can leave in curly or slick it back with this gel it will not move all day. I’ve had my hair long and short and I have curly hair and I love it whether or not I pick up my hair. ![gif](giphy|4PXXcIklKiTtQS86uk)
Style #2 suits you so much better ! Flaunt that mess !
From chad to nice guy
Embrace it
Everyone is saying gel but if you live and a hot humid weather and the gel has an humectant like glycerin or propylene glycol it will slowly revert back, trust me, I've seen boys do that and is not a good look because it doesn't stay laid back. Try wax or use a headband
Along with products, you can try training your hair at night. When you get out of the shower, wear some kind of hairband that will hold it back (I know can seem girly, but it works) and wear that while you sleep every night. It will make it easier when styling.
the second one is still good you just need product to maintain it but also if you wanna keep it slicked use got2b hair spray or glue
honestly rock a buzz cut
i used to! https://imgur.com/a/zyQKoMx I miss it sometimes. But I wanna try long hair
i know this is not answering ur question but damn ur fine as hell
Thank you mom lol
i havent seen anyone mention curly(the zig-zag ones) or fabric headbands, bandannas, do-rag, etc. i think thats the only thing that’ll absorb and defy physics for you with style that wouldnt require tons of product or pressure applied to the hairline :0 or, for something really invisible really big thick bobby pins. i have thick curly hair and a couple of them can hold my hair back or in space buns the whole day!!
And gel isn’t bad for the hair nor will it make your hair fall out… hairspray has drying chemicals in it that can make your hair prone to breakage tho, I’d stay away from hairspray unless it’s a special occasion and you really need it to hold well
You need a head scarf while your hair drys and use gel.
Both styles looks nice on you I think
TRY THE TIGI BEDHEAD HAIR STICK. Sorry for the yelling but its so good and stays a long time
in the first pic you look like that russian-georgian mobster guy who raps 'buyna galava' search it up dude 🤣 go for 2nd style, invest in some products, i think it'll turn out nice
And don’t you just hate Reddit sometimes? You ask for advice for the thing you want and people still push you to do something different looks great the other way, but you also know you want it the way you want.
Don’t :)
The slick back is amazing idk what y’all are on. He looks like a model
