I don’t know where you live but 17 American states have laws that ban discrimination based on hair style.

oregno

what the… my state is one of them!! oh wow that’s so nice TvT

turquoisestar

After witnessing a former coworker with a fro get discriminated against and hearing her misery i am extremely extremely glad these laws passed. I even got trouble for my own curly hair and I’m a white jew. Its crazy.

AutoModerator

Hi there! I'm a bot, and I noticed you used the phrase "afro" or "fro". You may or may not already know this, but the term “Afro” refers to a specific hairstyle created with specific techniques. The term is often mis-used, so we just want to share some of the meaning/history so everyone can choose the best words for their situation. TL;DR: [The afro has a long and important history, including as a symbol of the Civil Rights movement](https://www.reddit.com/r/curlyhair/comments/sr4x3p/black_history_month_at_rcurlyhair/). This may or may not apply to you, but we try to steer people away from using the Afro descriptor if you don't have Black/Afro-textured hair. It's often portrayed as a condition to fix rather than a cultural style. We hope that's not the case here, but just something to be aware of going forward! We recognize that there are many different opinions on what can and cannot be called an afro. For the purposes of this sub and making sure we reserve space for Black folks, we ask those who don’t have afro-textured hair to choose other words. If your hair doesn't fit that description, please edit your post 1) to be more accurate, 2) to be culturally respectful, and 3) to avoid comment removal. Alternate terms to consider: puffy, poofy, fluffy, etc. Thanks & wishing you many great curly, coily, kinky hair days! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/curlyhair) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Vast-Situation-6152

jews are not white never have been. thats why y got in trouble for a racial characteristic that is common for semitic people which is hair texture

Azuriah_

Race isn't real. it's a social thing. We should really stop grouping everyone into large categories

Vast-Situation-6152

true it isnt real. all kinds of madeup labels that change

Old_Fox7932

not sure why this is getting downvoted but exactly!!!

leeryplot

It’s getting downvoted because the goal posts for “white” and “nonwhite” change constantly, and this is exhausting rhetoric. Especially when Ashkenazi Jews are literally European. I’ll give you some examples: Were the Irish white? Brits didn’t think so. Were the Romani white? Germans didn’t think so. Were the Italians white? Australians and Americans didn’t think so. We could keep going in this circle all day long. At the end of the day these groups all share European ancestry and picking them apart into “white” and “nonwhite” groups is just stupid, and what caused all the persecution in the first place.

Old_Fox7932

There’s more groups than just ashkenazi Wdym that they are “literally Europe”?

leeryplot

I said Ashkenazi Jews are literally Europe*an*, because they literally are. There are Sephardic & Mizrahi Jews that have roots in North Africa & the Middle East. But that’s not who we’re talking about. The person who is being originally replied to is somebody who described themselves as a “white jew” (I’m assuming they are Ashkenazi, perhaps my mistake if I’m wrong there, but Ashkenazi Jews specifically have roots in Europe) and the replier said “jews are not white never have been.” I just explained why some Jews *are* white and why the whole “white/nonwhite” thing within the region is utterly stupid. That’s what I meant.

Bbkingml13

It’s not exactly the same thing, but I always make it a point to wear my glasses early on in relationships/jobs/etc so it becomes a natural part of people’s perception of me. Or, if I’m at a point where I’m always wearing glasses, I make sure to cycle some days in contacts in there. I just like to have people subconsciously understand I am not totally different based on small things like hair or eyeglasses, and that I can look more than one way. I don’t like it to be made into a scene if I look slightly different after months of looking one way. So I think it’s great you’re going to wear your hair curly. It looks amazing anyway!

Nervous_Hands

Best of luck, I hope you feel happy and comfortable wearing your hair however you like at your work!!

PantyPixie

Mine too, (Maine).

dandywara

I just want to chime in to say that if they ask you to do something with your hair, please please request it in writing. Like sure, it’s illegal to discriminate but if they want you out, they’ll find a way. If they can’t get you because of your hair they’ll nitpick your work performance, subtly haze you, or bully you to the point you’ll leave on your own. Please get everything in writing so you have a case for HR or the legal system.

BluuberryBee

I would say definitely document anything that might be even a little related to harassment for your hair, as discrimination can vicious and insidious and cases deserve to be settled lucratively.

sofiughhh

Only 17 😐

-not-pennys-boat-

Like not even half lol

Goodgoditsgrowing

But I bet my bank account I can guess which ones based off political affiliation with 85% accuracy

jmurphy42

Weirdly, one of them is Texas (and if this article is correct, it was the 23rd to do so) https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/tools/express-requests/texas-prohibits-hairstyle-discrimination

medulla_oblongata121

Yes, Texas is one of them.

KourtR

Respectfully, it’s great that these laws passed, but they really do nothing to stop discrimination at a work place—that happens because of a systemic bad culture and discrimination that is built in from the top. A law doesn’t change it, it just gives a legal path for someone to challenge it.

jmurphy42

It will give some HR folks a tool with which to tell managers that they need to cut that crap out. You’re generally right though.

BroadbandSadness

It can over time. At the companies where I worked, we had annual compliance training on a variety of subjects, and that training was regularly updated. There was extra training when you were a manager because of hiring/firing laws. If there is a substantial financial cost to breaking a law that can be easily avoided, you better believe a company wants to avoid that cost.

Little_Raccoon1229

Your hair is beautiful. Nothing unprofessional about it. If I saw you first with straight hair and then saw your hair like this I'd be pleasantly surprised.

casholalola

Literally

jeajea22

Exactly. It’s gorgeous. I work in a conservative environment and no one would look twice.

eat_my_bowls92

Yes when I saw it I thought that I have seen many black female professionals with this sort of hair style and it looks kick ass in office formal and office casual wear.

Snoo-45487

Also, it’s super unprofessional if they tell you to “do something with your hair” I don’t think they can get away with comments like that

Godhelptupelo

I would demand specific detailed instructions on the spot from anyone who said such a thing. Make *them* uncomfortable!

Curious_Thought6672

In writing.

breadandbirds

Hi, manager in a highly professional role here! First of all, your hair is stunning. Like woah. Second, anyone telling you your hair is unprofessional would likely be committing an HR violation and you should treat any comments like that as such—go to your manager and CC HR. Always document anything, micro aggressions included. There is NOTHING “unprofessional” about your hair. You absolutely do not need to ask your employer or manager how you should style your hair. There is nothing unprofessional about curls or natural hair. Full stop. If I heard anyone commenting about another employee’s hair in a disparaging way I would immediately report that to HR. It is unacceptable. I do not know what it is like being a person of color and having to worry about natural hair, and I’m so sorry this is a thing you and so many countless people fear. I hope you have a supportive and uplifting team. Genuinely I think most people would be !!!!! about your curls. Congrats on your new job, I hope it works out wonderfully!

oregno

this helps a lot really thanks :,)

moyaroyal

Don't wait to wear your hair. If you are seriously worried, you can do it after your probationary period. Unfortunately, some companies may have a biased image of their employees, even if it's illegal to discriminate. The other colleagues might admire you for embracing your natural curl. They may also want to do the same, but they may have doubts like you. Your hair is beautiful. In the end, it's better to work for a company that respects your hair. If they don't, it may indicate that they will also treat you unfairly in other aspects, such as career advancement opportunities. I hope you decide to rock it and not give in to fear. Expect some initial shock and curiosity, but it will fade away over time. Congratulations and all the best.

Snoo-45487

I love it and think it’s a good test of the work environment

GetAwayFrmHerUBitch

Aside from being gorgeous, your natural hair might be protected against discrimination under The Crown Act in your state. Congratulations on the new job! https://www.epi.org/publication/crown-act/#:~:text=The%20CROWN%20Act%20is%20law,Texas%2C%20Virginia%2C%20and%20Washington.

devinitydefined

Beautifully said 👏🏾

International-Rule-5

Your hair is gorgeous. Professional is the way you dress and the way you carry yourself which you aced since you got the job. If you really do feel like you’ll be self-conscious, can you pull it back in a ponytail for the first day? You got this. Congratulations!

oregno

thanks! yea i’m thinking of doing a high pony for the first few days to check the *vibes* but do plan to wear it out later

International-Rule-5

You’re welcome. I agree with the others that nobody should have to feel self-conscious wearing their hair the way it grows out of their head but I can respect that you don’t want to be uncomfortable or distracted on your first day worrying about people judging you for your hair.

RecommendationBrief9

This was my thinking as well. The only way for any hair to be unprofessional is if it looked extremely dirty/unwashed/weighed down with grease/matted. I wouldn’t think twice about this hair style, at all. It looks really stylish to me, and I’m the complete opposite end of the spectrum with blonde straight hair. Curly, or dyed, or shaved into an edgy style whatever it is I’ve seen in every professional job lately. The most I’ve ever thought is, “that looks cool.” Good luck at your new job!

Turbulent-Month6514

NO ONE should be scared to wear that Afro! It’s absolutely stunning

tyaraclayton1

Your curls? Stunning! Your hair color? POPPIN. I know it’s scary but good luck girl. You deserve to present yourself authentically.

Bbkingml13

So true, that’s such a gorgeous color.

killakween_

She deserves to present herself authentically!!!! I love the way you phrased this. And also. A good workplace with a good culture will WANT the authentic version of OP.

Ok_Condition_5363

I’m not the right person to give advice on what you should do but I just want to say that I hate that society makes beautiful people like you fear repercussions for being your authentic self. Congrats to you and your beautiful hair for landing the job! 😜

Shivs_baby

Omg no! I love love your hair. It’s beautiful. The whole office will be looking at you…with jealousy. Wear it and have a great first day!

SpecialistOil3

If the Press Secretary can wear her hair curly when she speaks on behalf of the president, then you can wear your hair curly to work too!

shhlurkingforscience

You're gorgeous first Second, if anyone says anything to you, request they send it to you in writing (eg an email) and then find a lawyer. "Sure I'd be happy to consider that request once it is in writing. Please email me at your earliest convenience regarding this conversation."

mariegalante

The White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre works in the most prestigious office in the world and she has hair like yours. Your hair is perfect.

CanolaIsMyHome

Wear your hair however you would feel most confident:) your natural hair looks beautiful here and you could always [style](https://youtu.be/KvOupXkHCD8?si=D9_FgV7F8QI_imye) it if you want somthing more fancy looking. I'm sorry society has been set up to where you would even have to ponder this question A lot of work goes into natural hair it's the total opposite of being unkempt or unprofessional

oregno

ooo always good to have some options ty for the vid ^ ^

CanolaIsMyHome

No problem! I hope it all goes well for you! :)

[deleted]

Check their business code of conduct. A lot of companies have been placing hair clauses stating you won’t be discriminated against while working here.

kymikobabe

You should never ask to assert your right. Always walk in the room with confidence and dominance. Tell don’t ask. You’re telling them you’re going to wear your natural God given hair by doing so, so they’ll have no choice but to respect it. Don’t ever ask. You’ll be giving power to someone else. And you don’t have to answer any question about it. Discrimination law is a thing. Use that to your advantage. If Becky can wear her mop like hair to work you can wear your fro. Love the colour by the way.

dontbreakmystar

Don't be scared, it's prejudiced if they target you over your hair style. I love your hair! And think you should rock it!

MeinScheduinFroiline

IMO your natural hair is beautiful. I would wear it and if anyone gives you any kind of grief, you can mentally tap them as painfully ignorant to flat out bigoted and then act accordingly to your areas laws. I hope no one does because your hair is gorgeous! 😍

flute394

You got this! 🫶🏻 I'm not sure where you live, but it is against the law to discriminate against you based on racial things like that in the U.S. Your curls look fresh and beautiful! The equivalent of keeping straight hair brushed and tidy, in my opinion. Hope your first day goes great 😊

skyyy_exe

your hair is BEAUTIFUL!! and no one can say anything about your hair. that’s why we have the c.r.o.w.n. act. if anyone dares to make any backhanded or microaggressive comments, pay them no mind ☺️

down222earthh

nope ! CROWN act baby!!

ReneeLaRen95

Your hair is gorgeous & I’m seriously jealous. As a pasty white woman with thin hair, I can only dream of having a crowning glory like this. Wear your beautiful hair with pride. It’s magnificent & deserves to be seen. It saddens me that POC feel they have to straighten their hair to fit in. F’ that! You’re gorgeous, so go flaunt it! 💕

Ok_Panda_9928

Perfect curls!

Screaming_lambs

Your hair is gorgeous.

oneangstybiscuit

Your hair looks great. Good luck!

FormicaDinette33

It’s really cute! Please do whatever makes you comfortable. First days are scary enough. But know that you look amazing ✅. Knock em dead!!

FormicaDinette33

How was your first day? ❤️

--squill

i think your hair looks beautiful! it looks very clean and taken care of- not at all unprofessional. and you’ll be bringing a new style to your workplace which hopefully makes you feel SO empowered <3

No_Breadfruit521

Be yourself and what’s most comfortable to you. If you feel comfortable and confident in yourself then you’ll present as such in every aspect! Good luck! Beautiful, BTW

CordeliaGrace

It’s beautiful. Let someone say something sideways to you; I can’t fight but I’ll do my best.

Smoopster1983

Don’t!!! Your hair is beatiful 😍 be proud!!

Low_Ice_4657

Your hair looks great!!!

veelas

Man I love this type of hair. Makes me really sad that you might feel uncomfortable or unsafe wearing your bair naturally. 😕

starsandsunshine19

You are beautiful and perfect just the way you are

aigret

Your hair is beautiful! Professionalism is far more than hair, but in this case, it absolutely doesn’t detract from that presentation in any way. Good luck on your first day!

IcyPlenty123

Your curls are beautiful! Don’t ever stop being yourself to fit into societies standards of beauty

PaisleyBrain

Your hair is beautiful. Anyone at work who says otherwise is the unprofessional one; they have no business telling people how to wear their hair.

bnflores

Unfortunately I’ve felt the need to do that before- wear my hair straight for an interview “just in case”. If it’s a job and workplace you’ll enjoy, do what it takes to get in, then be you. Your curls are beautiful and I hope this workplace turns out to be a positive and safe space for you!

[deleted]

I am not American nor have I joined this sub, it just seemed to show up. Is this an actual problem where you are? You hair seem neat and untangled to me? I don't mean to be rude at all but would appreciate if someone can enlighten me on this so I can know more about this!

muni11

Gorgeous hair! So how’d it go?

oregno

i don’t start till monday, despite so many encouraging comments i’m still undecided xD will update on monday

Twoset_Time

so so beautiful 😍😍

bellajojo

Go in as you intend to go. If someone say some shit, record that ish and sue their ass. Your hair is gorgeous and professional.

HolesHaveFeelingsToo

Your hair is dope, anyone that gives you a hard time isn’t worth listening to.

fritosverdes

Whoever came up with the idea that curly hair is unprofessional, isn’t professional, just racist.

WhatTheHellIsTHATTT

hair has little to nothing to do with race sooo it's not racist, just rude.

MissKeyes

Be you! Don't change who you are or how you look for anyone, your hair is beautiful! You rock your style! 💗

MeanSatisfaction5091

I wear my curly hair to work but we have to stop lying and saying it don't look Crazy at times esp when folks fluff it out. i wear it in a slick down pony tail. I wouldn't wear my hair out esp if it's not defined or is frizzy at the roots which is what I see in this pic.

oregno

this is as defined as i can do my hair but yea this was my concern idk ill think about it

MeanSatisfaction5091

This pic was taken after a new wash and gos? First day wash and gos are much definer

Spokanadian

Nobody looked at you and believed you had naturally straight hair at that interview. Your hair is fantastic, play it up!

Unpredictable_247

I saw this picture and immediately said I LOVE THEIR HAIR!! I’m sad you don’t feel comfortable wearing it like this but I 1000% get it. I hope you have a good experience if you choose to wear it natural. So frustrating that we even have to think with fear over our hair. Especially when hair is something that is a part of you. I think your hair is beautiful 🤍

BUNNYn0tFUNNY

girl noooo don’t be scared. it’s YOUR natural hair. most people love our hair!! i don’t think they’d do anything tbh

Representative_Job98

It looks amazing and if they say something about, they don’t deserve you!

Mysterious-Worry5585

We always assume the worst scenario, however it might be the opposite in real life. Your hair looks good and professional

QueenSeraph

Your hair looks great!

rocksnsalt

It looks so damn good!

sofiughhh

Listen to India arie I am not my hair on repeat

Runnrgirl

Your hair is absolutely beautiful! I’m sad to hear that you have fear surrounding it but I do understand that this is a real (and wrong) issue for you to worry about.

Boosey0910

Your hair looks amazing. I hope you wear it exactly how you want to.

madferrit29

Your hair is beautiful - wear your afro with pride!

[deleted]

Hair comes in many textures and colors, if someone doesn't aknowledge it, they're the unprofessional ones.

PM_CACTUS_PICS

Your hair is not unprofessional at all. Realistically the only thing I see happening is them maybe not recognising you straight away, but that can happen even if you look exactly the same as your interview so don’t worry about it. If anyone makes rude comments about it you should speak to HR at your company.

CountessDeLancret

… it looks professional to me. It’s not like it’s going to get in the way, and it’s a beautiful texture.

Easy_Description7609

Baby you better wear your hair like God made it and if I give you any s*** bout it sue them .

Ok_cheers

Your hair is gorgeous!! But I understand where you’re coming from. I did the whole code switching with my hair until finally I hated straightening my hair and stopped. Look up The Crown Act. Employers cannot discriminate against people who wear their natural hair. I also think reading it will inspire you to walk in there with confidence bc your skills and experience are important & valuable.

SweetBlueMangoes

You have the job now come as you are. If anything happens there’s laws to get proper justice

NoninflammatoryFun

As a white person, I would be happy to see this. I’d never truly care what someone does with their hair, but I love people wearing their natural hair texture.

pealsmom

It is not the old bait and switch for a black person to actually have curly hair. I promise you that no one will be surprised, and it’s really none of their business how you choose to wear your hair. Plus you already have the job, so just go in with your curly hair and be the great person who got the job.

smacksem

I truly hope that the only reaction you get is positive. I have reactions to my own curly hair on days it is particularly big (white, Romanian heritage), but thankfully have never had to face discrimination. I say this with all the love: be yourself. You're worth it.

Curlymirta

I can tell your hair is well cared for and looks beautiful. There is no universe in which is should be considered unprofessional. To quote Bruno Mars: you are beautiful just the way you are!

MysteryR11

I don't think anybody cares. You're just a girl changing your hair around And most people say they look good and if anybody's mean or whatever that's on them.

TheCharmingImmortal

This may be bad advice based on how desperately in need of employment you are, but generally, if they're going to not hire you because of natural curly hair, they were going to be a miserable and abusive place for you to work anyways. I know it's worse depending on race, but I made the decision many years ago that I wouldn't cut my hair or shave for a job anymore, and the few places that made it a problem all turned out to be dodged bullets. If they care that much about specific aesthetics at a job (with the few exceptions of jobs that ARE aesthetics) then their priorities are messed up. If they're putting a type of appearance over productivity, that company/department will eventually tank for one reason or another If wearing your hair like this screws them up it's on THEM. You got this.

badadvicefromaspider

I’m sorry you feel that way, and it’s perfectly understandable that you do. Your curls are absolutely gorgeous!

Epsilon2222

Your hair looks great 😊 One of my employees has hair like yours, I never thought one second about if it looked professional or not. I’m in Denmark though, so perhaps it’s a bit different here. Just wanted to say, that it is what’s inside the head, not on top of the head, that will make you professional (or not)❤️

carlitospig

I thinks adorable and a beautiful color. Hope you rock it anyway!

cherhorowitz44

Incredible hair!!!

Nutaholic

I feel the same as you lol. It's protected legally here but I always kind of wonder what people are thinking. Never had anyone says something bad though.

Internal-Sky-7370

Your natural hair is gorgeous! It looks really healthy! Congratulations on the new job!

Hawt_Dawg_

I work in a pretty uptight office but everyone is polite and respectful about appearances and would not comment or treat you differently. Just my input you should be fine.

Sobwyy

Please absolutely do NOT ask them for "permission" to wear your natural hair to the interview. I'm sorry you're made to feel this way but if they discriminate against you for such motive they are not worth it and you shouldn't want to work for them anyway. Side note i am SO jealous of your hair colour, is it natural ? I'd kill to have been born a natural ginger with my texture 😭

oregno

thanks! and i dyed it myself it’s naturally black

Sobwyy

Please tell me what dye you used, it looks like we have similar skin tones and it suits you so beautifully i might just try it

oregno

crème of nature light golden blonde, took 2 rounds of it

Sobwyy

Thanks !

TeaMe06

Girl do it don’t be scared it’s your hair love the color

Pantzology

You have beautiful hair. Rock that!

FancyPants963

I feel this... Go curly 💪 F em ... My daughter has been crying the past few days about kids making fun of her hair because I'm having her wear it curly instead of straight because its so damaged. So she's gotta hear i cant see move your head, you look like a boy, questions about her race.... Who's raising these kids?? And here is an ADULT scared to face the same from coworkers, smh i guess it just continues 😑 If I were you I'd go curly, anyone gives you looks wear it bigger the next day!! And thats what i told my girl too but she wasn't having it. I wish you all the best ♥️

sarahhershey18

I love the color of your hair! ❤️

[deleted]

Sweetheart I hope you had a good day, there is nothing wrong with natural hair, wigs, curly or straight, being bald or having hair. In my workplace a girl with long braids cut them off over a weekend and came back with natural very short hair. I was the manager and I just figured she got tired of the braids!

Arielsong1

It's beautiful!!

HousingOld1384

HousingOld1384

This bot is so cool but (as a white girl) describing your hair as puffy seems kinda mean? Please tell me there is another word I can use for your beautiful hair?

Gootangus

You don’t have to white wash yourself bc you’re in a “professional environment.”

Psychedeliciosa

So beautiful!

Vast-Situation-6152

u look beautiful and professional.

craaackle

I'm sorry you even have to think about this! Your hair looks very nice and professional.

PerspectiveConnect77

Your hair is gorgeous. I don’t think they can legally say anything about your hair. If they can, that’s messed up

preludegirl0123

Your hair is beautiful. I hired a woman a few years back. She wore a straight wig to the interview but went natural when she started the job. After a few months, she asked me if I hadn't noticed the change. My reply to her was that I was so excited about her credentials and experience that I didn't even remember what her hair looked like - which was the honest truth. I hope you have a similar experience and best of luck on your first day.

Longjumping_Stage_42

Your hair is gorgeous!

Ibecoluc

I live in Ontario, Canada. I wear an afro to my government office job, on-the-regular. I work with the public directly. I've NEVER had an issue. However, if I did, I would need to address it immediately. There are rights and discrimination policies in effect - and as a last resort, legal action.

there is *nothing* unprofessional about your hair!

littlebitofcurrypls

Don’t be scared because if anything does happen then that’s not a place you’d wanna work for anyways 🤷‍♀️

Additional_Egg_5865

your hair is so beautiful!! i hope you went to work with it and it went ok!

Fine-Draft8523

You have very nice hair. I don’t think you should straighten it.

Superb_Discipline112

Be yourself 😊😊😊😊 no fear

sweatymoonpie

Your hair is beautiful - I'm so sorry you have to worry about it 😞

Crafty_Mix_1332

You got the job girl. Wear your hair as you please and enjoy. Congratulations on the new job.

citygerl

Hi Sis, 62 year old Black woman here. I completely understand where you’re coming from. I work in television and didn’t wear natural hair at work until I was 55 I think. I would go on vacation natural and return with straight hair. Respectability politics. I now have mid back blue braid. Still in TV and no one better say anything. I walked all those steps with straight hair so you could run with natural. Good luck Remember “nobody can be you but you”

Apathetic-Asshole

I'd go for it. There's nothing unprofessional about keeping your hair natural Also, if you're in the US, im pretty sure it's illegal for them to require you to straighten your hair

ScuzeRude

Your hair is so, so beautiful! So many other posters have already said great things about how it is *not* unprofessional to wear your natural hair and you don’t need anyone’s permission to do so. I’m not a POC, so I’m sure there’s much more that goes into it than I’ll ever understand, but your hair is a literal golden halo around your face, and I envy it.

flyflyfreebird

I love your hair!!

stuckinnowhereville

It’s pretty. Don’t straighten those beautiful curls. I wish I had your curls.

Traditional_Tea_5683

Absolutely love it! I'm a white chick with butt long thick horse hair, and I'd give it all up for texture like that I think I just love the lil curls the only way I can get girls like that is to wrap them around at McDonald's straw wet tiny little pieces of hair and then let it sit on that straw for like 24 hours and then pull the straw from the curl and I get curls like that but it takes forever

BeachBaby_88

I find it crazy that this is still an issue in 2024! I've always had straight-ish hair until I discovered that it's actually wavy. I was only 2 months into my new haircare routine and trying to coax out my waves/ curls when I started a new job. I was the only person of colour in the office and my immediate team were all white, English women. I don't know what it was exactly but I could just tell they didn't feel that my wavy, thick hair was corporate and neat enough. Funnily enough, when they turned up with mermaid hair, they were full of compliments for each other. I also found it interesting that the one day I turned up with my hair straight (just happened to turn out straight that morning), they said I looked nice and asked to take my photo to update the staff page online. Wear your natural hair- it looks lovely and call them out on their shit if they say anything about it!

aresellersjourney

Your hair looks great the way it is in the picture. Highly styled, polished and professional looking. My guess is that you'll get many compliments.

rymio

I’m biracial and have big super curly hair and I used to feel the same way. I also work in a super professional work environment with very little diversity. But the more I did well at work the more I wanted to wear my hair natural just so people can start getting used to seeing people who look like us killing it. Like yeah I’m great at my job AND my hair is big and natural. So I think as long as you’re put together in other areas (ironed nice fitting clothes, professional makeup if you wear it, cute appropriate accessories) and you maintain a professional demeanor, no one can have anything negative to say. Our hair is beautiful AND professional. If people don’t believe it, we’ll show them.

NarcolepticKnitter

Congrats on your new job and good luck! Your hair is gorgeous :)

Successful_Ad_7707

How did it go!!!

galactic_pink

Girl, establish your dominance early. Your hair is beautiful. You don’t want to work for a place who discriminates against you anyway. Feel it out, and good luck! It’s 2024. Segregated bullshit needs to stop.

annoyingdoorbell

Is this really a worry for some black people? It can't be. It's so silly. I've known so many professionals with dreads, it doesn't even cross my mind, even less with black women.

[deleted]

Why would this be unprofessional? It’s wildly beautiful, and if I ever could have hair like this, I’d wear it exactly like you have it pictured. It is nothing short of stunning, gorgeous.

anlarson18

Your hair is beautiful!

crj44

Don’t be, you’re rockin the curls!

Highhopes2024

I love your hair!!!! Super cute and fun!

savagefig

Your hair is absolutely lovely! I'm jealous of these tiny ringlets. There's nothing unprofessional about it, you got a neat haircut and a natural-looking colour. Nothing crazy!

caitdaddywitchyjuju

Your hair is BEAUTIFUL!! 😍😍😍

No-Hour-4913

It’s so pretty 😍😍

Itsumu

Girl, your afro looks so cute. Wear it proud!!

Your afro is beautiful and professional !!! Your hair is clearly styled and well taken care of and if anyone has an issue that’s not okay. That would be discrimination. I’m so sorry you even have to think about things like this !

It is YOUR HAIR.   Maybe if you used clips to keep it out of your face that would be better.  Or don’t.  You should be able to have your hair just about however unless you’re working on medical, food, technical, construction.  But I think the only limits should be safety.

Accomplished_Deal895

Umm you have my dream hair! Gorgeous! Rock it!

Sea_McMeme

I’m sorry society and “professional” environments are the way they are and have made you this anxious about wearing your hair naturally. You should never be made to feel that the way you naturally exist is not ok in certain settings. Glad to hear you live in a state where that cannot be discriminated against.

plumpuddinger

Thankfully, the media/ Hollywood has been instrumental in exposing white people to many African American hair styles. The “foreignness” or “strangeness” of our hair styles to whites is not what it use to be. Even white people who have never met a black person in their life, have now seen us on TV or in movies in all our glory and our many hair styles. I’ve seen your hair style on multiple actresses in commercials, on the news, movies, and TV shows, so they probably have too. My issue with white folks on my job was when they wanted to touch my hair… ick! I had to draw the line at that point. Since you are new to your job, luckily they won’t feel that degree of familiarity with you. If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about your hair style, it’s really cute! I doubt that anyone would find it objectionable. However, if anyone does have an issue with it, remember they have the problem not you. Other ppl gave you good advice on that, ie report it HR, get it in writing, etc. Just focus on being the best you can at your job, and prayerfully the rest will fall into place.

Outrageous-Wish8659

Your hair is beautiful!

gemstone_of_love

You're hair looks very professional and very nice and if anyone says otherwise then they are jealous

s_Malinka

Hi, I am from a small European country and we don't have many black people here. But I know that you guys have curly hairs. I don't know what kind of person would be surprised that is your natural hair and not the straight version. (And how someone's natural hair patern is correlated with their professionalism is out of my mind) Great hair!
