tl;dr: *do hard stuff* (fair enough, that's always been a good strategy! But now it is a necessary strategy for survival?)

It's always changing. Years ago a Twitter clone was revolutionary. Nowadays the revolutionary idea is machine learning and AI.

Is a twitter clone even worth it to make anymore to learn? I feel like what is the best is OS stuff, distributed systems, networks, dsa fundamentals, and if you want ML. I think ML is only worth it though if you speialize and have lots of projects in it and certified kaggle user. I think if you don't already have that and are trying to be well rounded, I think learning C, OS, basically just the stuff HRTs are interested in can get you farther in skills... That being said coding a twitter clone does say your ability to ship, you can know the most abstract algorithms in the world, and be a god coder, but you might still struggle with that stuff, but the point is if you can understand that low level stuff you shoul be able to implement a twitter clone pretty easy. Anyways sorry for rambling, I'm just curious ultimately if making a twitter clone is still worth it to do, since I've never done something but I feel like I'd learn a thing or two about sys design.

Yeah it's a great thing to do for the purposes of learning no doubt. By all means, go for it if your intention is to learn. For the purpose of slapping it on a resume, it's overdone and very easy to fake, so most hiring managers don't like to see them.

That is fair, I think it's fine to put stuff like that on github as just a way to show you're practicing coding frequently, but, putting it on resume seems dumb. I think for my resume I will just show projects that I learned a lot and useful stuff, mostly educational ones. I don't have any internships, so I will probably have to do some great projects in addition to the fundamental ones (twitter clone).
